Allow teachers to carry Guns in schools?

O_o This is a little confusing to me. On one hand if the teachers have the guns I can understand they will be better equipped to handle situations like columbine. On the other who's to say the teachers are mentally stable themselves. I know I had some teachers that made me question their sanity. The thing that bothers me about this story is that they are still discussing whether or not to put this in place. It will be a scary thought for parents with children in these schools as they drop them off each day. Also there are now talks of leaving the descision up to the states themselves on whether to implement this or not. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on this.

I don't think teachers should have guns in the school, for the same reason student's shouldn't. A Teacher might get pissed off at the class and might take out the gun and use it as a threatening measure. What if the teacher accidentally pulls the trigger? it could result in a few things. The kids get scared and report the incident to the police/parents. The bullet hits someone and seriously injure someone. The bullet kills someone all these would result in the school being sued and the teacher loosing there job. It might be a protection method but it is also a risk factor.

The idea itself is just absurd.

Eventhough some of them are unqualified for a heavy and rough job as a "teacher", I still believe that teachers these days are misunderstood and disrespected.

So the way to stop guns in schools, is to give out more guns? As if you're going to make firearms training a prerequisite for school teachers. Sam's got it right, it's absurd. While teachers may have a stressful job, and the threat of firearms in schools can be real (in some places), it's not to say that the solution to guns is to hand out guns to those who don't have them. That just means that if something does break out, there's more guns firing, and a higher probability of unnecessary injury/death. Maybe, think about putting security guards or something like that in first, before you decide to give a gun to somebody doling out textbooks.

So... if a student comes to school packing with intent to kill, a teacher also equipped with a gun will help the situation? Yeah, right. Sounds more like an exacerbation to me.

I'm not sure what to say about it. I think it could go both ways, a lot of kids these days thinks it's cool to carry a gun. Down here the schools are pretty bad, but I don't think it's right for the teachers to do the same as the kids. As for the security guards...I'm not sure if that would work though a lot of schools have them now. That is one of the reasons I'm glad I never went to public school.

I donno I live in an area where the crime rate is minimum to none, very rare... so in my oppinion I'd say having a teacher carry a gun would be an insane idea. Bad in so many ways, but on the opposite side I can see where they would want to where they may be necessary. But I mean with the shootings in the school perhaps a student would get the brilliat idea to sneak into the teacher's room/desk while they are not around.. aka killing everyone in the vacinity.. yeah great idea. Protection perhaps, but otherwise just a stupid idea.

This isn't a new debate. It's pretty much been around since the school shootings first occured, which if I'm right would be the Columbine High School shooting, but it's making a come back as we had like 10 of them in the last 3 years (I'm including over seas in Europe).

On that note, here's a better solution: MORE GUN CONTROL!!! Which everyone hates, but if you want to get rid of the threat and worry all together, this is your only way. Only law enforcement can have hand guns, all guns for hunting have to be kept securely at a station near where you would go hunting, and teach gas station attendants everywhere to use a tazer gun.

But, that's un-realistic and I know that everyone will be against that plan anyway. If you can't have more gun control, then the absolute best thing to do is to have more protection. At the college I go to, there is a police station right on campus. At the high school I went to, there were 2 officers max around at any time, except when we had bomb threats or drug searches. It was a large high school though and hard to move around. I would say 2 police officers for every 1000 people in a large high school, 3 in a school with less than 1000.

Again, this is unrealistic since it costs the school money to hire security, and schools have to cut back in everything now adays.

Third solution: Arm the teachers. Poor idea for the reasons everyone else has already listed, good idea for obvious reasons, but let's change this some.

Don't give teachers guns, let the secretary have a gun, let principals have guns. There, you now have probably 5 more people with guns, and they are usually going to be witness to any shooting that happens anyway. It costs no more money to the state, no worry for the kids, and you wouldn't even have to know they carry them. After that, make sure you can prevent the fucking shooting in the first place. Abolish any social classing, make sure everyone knows that they can go to a counsoler, and take every minor threat seriously. Figure out what students have access to guns in some way, talk to the parents, convince them to teach that guns are not to be used against other people, and now you have a plan with no possible flaws.
