Democracy would be great if so many people weren't inept at leading themselves. At the same time, a more "selective" leadership would also be good if...well, people weren't so inept at leading.

communism is a decent attempt at government as well... the problem with it is that the people in power get greedy and corrupt... if the people in power werent usually so greedy and corrupt, it wouldnt be all that bad.

Despotism. Although its regime is identical to that of totalitarianism, I believe this is the best. In times of old, this type of Government was on which the Pharaoh of Egypt adapted. However, if it were to be used in these times, it would be seen as tyrannical.

Ok well first off, I think there is too many choices on here... Socialism generally falls into Communism anyways, a Fascist and Totalitarian regime are essentially the same thing, and really, a Monarchy ends up being an Oligarchy anyways, what with the kings' councils and all. Also, I think a Military based state is an important one that wasn't included, but that may go under Totalitarianism.

But "best" form of government... I don't think any such thing exists. If there truly was a best form of government, it would have been invented thousands of years ago and every society in the world would be using it. But this is not so, nor do I think it ever will be. depending on who you ask, where you go, and what the needs are, different governments work. There is no type of government that can be a cure-all for any society's problems.

Countries with problems with wealth balance issues and class tensions would go for Communism. Countries with military weakness or economic depression might turn to Totalitarianism. Regimes like these eventually lead to the populace becoming uneasy and then making them shift to democracies or republics, at least until problems arise, and then they can slump back to the previous way. It's a cycle, really. And even if a certain place claims to run a certain regime, it will always have elements that gradually change its form. Take the USA for instance, during the Cold War the government showed signs of Totalitarian influence, and today it's going towards Socialism/Communism with the economy.

One thing I think people really don't understand is that human rights and liberties and a successful government don't always go hand in hand. People might favor weaker systems of government because they promise certain "rights" *coughUSAcough* The most prosperous societies in history were all run by dictators (Roman empire, Mongol Empire, Alexander the Great, Egypt). I guess that nowadays with the whole "democracy" thing being popular, people might say it's the natural evolution of government, and we are all happy now. I think that it's all just one huge cycle. Within the next hundred years or so, we might find a dramatic shift in what systems are popular.

So my answer, to "What's the best form of government?" is all of them, yet none of them.
