The Black Angel
Chapter 1: Encounter

A dark figure lurks through the shadows of the black forest. Chasing me at lightning
speed, closing in for the attack. I kept thinking, Why me? And why now? There was nothing I could do. I knew nobody. I saw nobody. I was alone. Alone to die.
And I couldn’t do anything about it. So I ran, ran as fast as I could, as far as I could. If I was going to die. i would die trying. No matter what. To my horror, the chase came to a stop all too soon. I ran straight into a cliff wall. It stretched for miles and was hundreds of feet tall.“Ah, crap! This is bull!” I whispered frantically. “Damn!”
That’s when the growling started. I heard footsteps behind me, I turned slowly to see the dark figure walking towards me to reveal himself. I was shocked at what I saw. Paralyzed even. He was the most beautiful man I’ve seen in my entire 15 years. His ivory skin, coal black hair that was long enough to reach past his chin. And his blue eyes pierced my very soul. And yet, he didn’t look too friendly. The man took a step forward and I flinched back to the wall in response. I haven’t realized the growling until it gotten louder and when I saw wolves, panthers and leopards. All together.
“ Ah, shit! What are panthers and leopards doing in a forest?” I whispered, frustrated. “And with wolves!! What is up with that?” I noticed one of the panthers to my right looked agitated and growing impatient by the second. Finally, it crouched and when it couldn’t hold back any longer it pounced in my direction. I squeezed my eyes shut and waited for the pain.
A minute passed, there was a silence, there was no pain. I slowly opened my eyes to find the man in front of me in a defensive posture. My eyes flickered over to the panther who tried to attack. It limped back into the depths of the darkness. The wild animals growled loudly in fierce anger at their wounded comrade. Yearning for him. “Who are you?” I asked the man. He said nothing for a moment and smiled a tiny smile. “My name you ask? Well, to answer your question Miss Rosette Coleman, I am known as the Black Angel,” he began. Turning to smile at me and look into my eyes. “But you may call me Rai Kingsbury.”
Without warning, the wolves howled at the full moon and the panthers and leopards roared with great volume.
They didn’t hold back. They sped toward us and sprung to attack Rai. I closed my eyes tight. At least, he was with me. I wont forget the clothes he wore right now. A black cloak and pants, this is because of his beauty, which was now burned into my memory. Forever. I screamed as I heard clothes ripping and a fierce growling. We were goners….
Surprisingly, I wasn’t in any pain whatsoever. Everything was black as the midnight sky. My breathing was slow and moving at a certain rhythm. But something was wrong.
I heard another set of lungs inhaling in and out. With the cool breathe brushing against my cheek. I was warm in this cold night. And I was at peace. I opened my eyes a bit but didn’t have the strength to open them all the way.
It was strange what I saw. There was a black fiber and a smooth silk cloak covering me.
At that instant, My eyes flew open as the numbness went away and I felt his hand under my legs and the other against my back holding me up with his strength. I squirmed away from him trying to make him drop me but as he began to loose grip on me, I caught a glimpse of what was below me. I shrieked as fast as I could think. I was flying…with him…
“Whoa!! Easy there!” “he exclaimed. “Do you want me to drop you and let your head splatter on the street? Honestly, what would the folks in town say if they found out their tourists were suicidal?” I knew he was joking but I couldn’t help feel a bit pissed. As he said all this, I gazed at him in wonder. What a strange boy he is, I thought as I stared at his man-like face with that impish grin of his. I couldn’t help but smile. “ Well, well. Has sleeping beauty finally awake, then?” he teased, grinning.
I wiped the smile off my face and replaced it with a scowl. He burst out laughing at my expression. “Man, for a really gorgeous girl, you sure are a joy killer!” he laughed wholeheartedly.
I stared at him with wide eyes. Man,I thought. He sure is an energetic guy isn't he? My face turned red when he said "Gorgeous girl." Rai finally calmed down and settled with a calm gentle smile and kind eyes. "I don't know why but...I feel like, with you, I can laugh anytime, you know?" he said, staring ahead. “That no matter where we are… we’ll always get through anything with a smile… as long as we’re together…” He closed his eyes.
"But we just met." I rolled my eyes,

"I don't care. It's how I feel."

"Then don't you think it's just a little too dramatic?"

He grinned. "Maybe... but honestly... WHO CARES???!!!" Rai began spiraling downwards towards the entrance to town with me screaming the whole way there.
He was yelling and whooting in delight and pleasure. This guys nuts!! As we got closer to the ground, Rai had gotten rid of his wings and landed on a tree branch before the town entrance. I clawed my nails into his chest in fear and adrenaline. "Hey...um...Rosette...ow...that hurts you know. Don't worry, you're safe," he said softly, wincing as my nails remained intact on his chest.
He gently put me down and took my hands and held them. Rai chuckled one and smiled ruefully. I smiled sheepishly back. "Now, let's eat some grub!!" Rai shouted. He slipped his hand on my waist and leaped off the branches one by one.
He landed gracefully to the ground but kept his hold around my waist as he strolled towards town. I didn't quite understand how he could be so happy all the time. His words came back to me. I don't know why but...I feel like, with you, I can laugh anytime, you know? I couldn't be the reason for his happiness.Looks to me like he was born with a smile on his face.
As the old man walked up to us and said to Rai,"Hey There. Master Rai. I see your doing well as usual."
Rai grinned and said," Yes sir. Still as healthy as always." The old man chuckled and walked around us.He smiled warmly at me. "Watch out for that one missy. He's a wild one," he said, chortling to a small building.
I glanced at Rai from the corner of my eyes. He was staring at the old man and said, "Crazy old coot." He winked at me and released me from his hold.
"Old timer's name is Mr. Bsrnsworth. He and I were old friends a few years back. We say hello and go out for coffee every now and again. Hey, want to go get some burgers? I know this great place!" he stated. I smiled effortlessly. "Sure!" He smiled even more gentle than before which got me blushing again.
When we reached the shop, a waitress skiped to our side immediately. "Good evening Rai! Welcome you two! Now, what would you like?" she greeted us. She knows him too? Rai gave me another wink and said," Four large hamburgers, two packs of fries , two destinies, and two heavenly sahkes if you don't mind. I questioned the word “Destinies and heavenly shakes.” What the hell? The girl named Grace, our waitress lead us to our seats saying, “ Coming right up! Your order will be here soon!” She skipped inside the kitchen whiled I stared after her. Nice girl.
When our order arrived, Rai instantly started scarfing down his burger barely even chewing. I stared at him in amazement. He really is a strange guy, I thought. One of a kind. I smiled happily but looking at Rai got me thinking.
“Hey, Black Angel,” I said. Rai chewed on his burger and muffled, “Call me Rai!” I chuckled once. Then I began again. “Rai, if you could have anything in the world… what would it be?” He took another huge bite then looked at the sky chewing his food. After a moment, I asked if he didn’t know. He continued to stare at the sky chewing. After he finished the 1st one he started on his second. “Uh… is it too hard a question for you?” I asked. Rai stared at me with his burger in his mouth. “Oh…No… not at all. Just hungry, is all,” he grinned.
I was a little irritated at him but I smiled instead. Rai swallowed and looked at me. “When you asked me that question, I knew my answer instantly. I just made it seem like I didn’t know to bug you,” he laughed. I glared at him but relaxed as he smiled at me. “What I could have more than anything in the world I will have someday.” Rai stared at me intensely and took my hands. “And what I want more than anything…,no matter how long it takes….all I want…is you Rosette…”
