Well just sharing any old file isn't piracy, it would have to be copyrighted in some sort of way which basically means if you didn't completely create the file you are sending, you are a terrorist who deserves to be gunned down in cold blood by the RIAA.
And when they say pirating cuts profits from the industry - it's not really making the industry lose money. They can't lose what they never got. If someone buys a movie and makes a copy of it and gives it to me, the industry isn't going into the negative any - they just aren't gaining anything from that copy. This is their definition of them losing money, when it is simply them not gaining any more than they have. If you find a DVDrip on the internet, someone somewhere had to buy that DVD/CD at some point in order to rip it so hey they got a DVD or CD sale out of it yeah? Obviously people are still buying their stuff or they would have stopped selling it.
But they hold the rights to this stuff, so they can flaunt this power. Hell, who wouldn't want to try and expunge as much money as they possibly can from people if they have the power to? I don't blame them for wanting to sue people for the sake of getting sweet sweet money, it makes the world go 'round.
