You're right, they do depend upon the government too much. My mother can be an example but not a really good one. She was getting paid around $300 every 2 weeks at the job we work at. But the way gas prices were going half of that money went towards gas. To save money we got rid of a lot of stuff we thought were maybe taking money away (WoW, GameTap, cable T.V.) little by little. IRS wouldn't let her gain food stamps because she made $300. The IRS doesn't even count gas as a "necessity". My mom had to quit, and was sorry to say that it paid better to sit on her ass and do nothing and let the government take care of us.
Nobody can do anything else themselves anymore, and the government today makes it that way. People really don't have a choice in the matter.
