I figured this ought to be settled once and for all.

What is the best video game system EVER?

In the history of all games, what do you think is the most fun, most awesome game system? Then say why because if you have no reasoning then you fail. PC doesn't really count.

There isn't a poll because there are too may game systems for a poll.

I say the best system EVER is NINTENDO 64! The best games! The most innovation! The most fun! First mainstream game console with control sticks, rumble, and 4 player support. Super Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, Mariokart 64, Super Smash Bros, Starfox 64, Paper Mario, Kirby 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Party, the list goes on and on and on and on.
N64: Best game system of all time.

What say you?

Wii for me. ^_^
Makes you feel like you're more involved in the game because you can make similar moves to do stuffs. Well, I think that at least.

I would have to go with the Nintendo 64. I never have played games that have quite gained my attention and interest like Super Mario 64, or had so much fun playing with friends with games like MarioKart. But the second or close tie for the 64 for me would be the Xbox 360.

fejknick
12-06-2008, 08:05 PM
Then: Commodore 64. Without it we wouldn't have games.
Later: SNES. For all the obvious reasons.
Now: Xbox 360, because they take everything everyone else does, copies it and makes it better. ^^

NINTENDO 64 FTW!!!! there's is no video game system more widely know as this. Just about everyone I know has or had one including myself. Though new ones came out, the 64 will be a legend...long live 64!!

SNES. It's possibly the only console ever that managed to be a master in every genre applicable to it. Platformers, RPGs, scrolling shoot-em-ups, adventure, etc.

Platformers: Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Kirby Super Star, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, Mega Man X3, Super Castlevania IV, Super Return of the Jedi

RPGs: Final Fantasy 6 (3), Secret of Mana, EarthBound, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Evermore, Breath of Fire II.

Action-Adventures: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid.

Fighters: Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (best version), Killer Instinct, Ultimate Mortal Kombat III.

Scroling Shoot-em-ups: Gradius III, Axelay, R-Type III, Super R-Type, Smash TV.

Other stuff that doesn't warrant a genre grouping: Kirby's Dream Course, Star Fox, Super Mario Kart, SimCity, Super Bomberman 2.

...and more, of course. This is just an attempt at a small list of favorites that I have on the SNES. It's clearly a beast when it comes to great games.

I noticed a lot of people in this thread naming the N64. Strangely, I was never able to love that console as much as other people. Sure, it's got the 3D Zeldas and a handful of good platformers (Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day), but overall it's really lacking in other genres. There's no decent scrolling shoot-em-ups, no decent RPGs (ouch!), etc. In fact, I can only really think of 20 or so really good N64 games whereas I can come up with around 80 really good SNES games. It's a real shame that the N64 was so inflexible...everyone just wanted 3D platformers and adventures...and that's mostly all they got.

Wow, great post.
And thats why i choose SNES on my list too. It have so much more games that i love than the N64. And if were gonna talk about what's inside the console then PS3 or 360 will win. But as far as games go.... SNES does it all. If i had to chose 1 console for the rest of my life it'd be a SNES.

Yes the SNES is an extremely close second for me, so very many great games, N64 just beat it out on my list because we never had a SNES when I was growing up playing games, we skipped straight from the NES to N64, so it carries a certain nostalgia factor.

On another note a lot of you people are just naming systems with no reasons. Shame on you.

sega dreamcast to ahead of its time

Really? That's a weird console to name as the best...ahead of its time maybe, but that doesn't make up for the fact that there's only 5 or so good exclusives for it. And most were only good. Not great. The only games on the Dreamcast that I thought were "great" were Ikaruga, Street Fighter III: The Third Strike, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Jet Grind Radio. And...wouldn't you know it, most of those are available on other consoles, at cheaper prices and with better controllers to play them with.

I will admit that the Dreamcast isn't terrible, but I find it strange that anyone would completely overlook the plain fact that there aren't very many good games for it (and in fact, not very many games at all).

As for its other "amazing" features, the online on it is gone now, and I'd rather use something else to play my CDs, very much.

I'm with you on the fact that its weird to pull the DC card in a debate as this one. But how the F**k could you forget Shemune? That was like the main reason for me not throwing my DC into the trash-can and getting something else.

Thats all i had to say on the subject. Otherwise, well put.

Because in Shenmue, it takes forever for anything to actually happen. Overly realistic environments are cool and all, but it doesn't amount to much when you're simply walking around and talking to people for hours. Not to mention an ending that forces you to buy the second game if you actually want to know how things end.

It's not terrible, but I certainly consider it overrated. I'm not much for the initial boredom. It gets better, yeah, but that doesn't make the bad stuff disappear.

Atari beats everything ever made.

Uh, which Atari? I really hope you're talking about the 2600.

Taste is like the ass, divided. ^_^

But yeah, when you put it that way then the fighting games was what kept DC alive as long as it did. Wow..... why aren't there any good 2d fighting games coming out anymore? Capcom should give us Street fighter in 2d instead of this 3d shit they are coming with.

Yeah, I'd really enjoy another game like Street Fighter III: The Third Strike. Or even a new Marvel vs. Capcom or something. Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2 are decent...but the re-release of DOA2 on the PS2 is better, and SC2 is so much better than the first that it's ridiculous.

Atari is #2 in my list...one of the oldest but most entertaining. I remember the control with the one red button and its huge joy-sick. Some fun times I had with that console.
Then SNES comes in third or fourth(debating against XBox)

i could never get into play station there are a few awesome games out there for it. N64 set the standards for 3d gaming back then along with Super Mario 64 which was awesome pretty fun on the DS also. i'm stuck between nintendo wii and x-box 360 i love both of them. Wii for the revolutionized controllers and the 360 for the graphics and the games on it.

Sega what? Master System? Because that was their first console, you know, and it wasn't that good.

But since almost nobody knows that the Master System exists, most people mean the Genesis when they say "durrr i have a Sega," so I'll assume that's what you meant.

Lol. The Playstation set the standard for Playstation RPGs, not RPGs in general. If anything set the overall standards, it was the SNES, which did it years before the PS1 even came out. And hell, even then, some of the standards were already established on the NES.

All the Playstation did was expand reuse RPG material and put it in 3D. Not that they weren't great, of course.

hahaha my bad, should have said "re-setting the standards..." but seriously thats where the last of the great RPG's came from, sure PS2 had some but not many....the RPG days are slowly fading and its sad to see it happen, so i reminisce over the PS, so thats why i give the PS credit cause they kept it around....and cause i never really played an RPG on NES or SNES

I'd have to say the N64. Do to the ergonomically designed controlers which made the FPS games such as Goldeneye and Perfect Dark an ease to play. Plus the best game ever "Goldeneye was created for it. Won best game of the year three years in a row. Plus I couldn't tell you how many hours I logged on Killer Instinct Gold.
