I am actually surprised at the lack of anything to do with metal in this forum. So I have taken it upon myself to list off some bands from the many sub genres of metal for recommendations sake. Starting with my favourite two genres(not in any order mind you);

Power Metal

Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Demons and Wizards
Rhapsody of Fire (formally just Rhapsody)
Hammerfall
Edguy
Firewind
Gamma Ray
Helloween

Folk Metal

Korpiklaani
Eluveitie
Moonsorrow
Finntroll
Skyclad
Waylander
Turisas
Ensiferum
Ásmegin

Thrash metal

Overkill
Sodom
Kreator
Municipal Waste
Stormtroopers of Death
Toxic Holocaust
Exodus
Testament
Holy Moses

NWOBHM

Diamond Head
Girlschool
Iron Maiden
Motörhead
Saxon
Witchfinder General

Black Metal

Carpathian Forest
Immortal
Emperor
Mayhem
Woods of Ypres
Dragonlord
Darkthrone
Dark Forest
Nokturnal Mortum

Viking Metal

Einherjer
Thyrfing
Windir
Kampfar
Svartsot
Mithotyn

Just a note, the bands listed under viking metal are for the most part a mix of a lot of things. People just throw them under the term "viking metal" so I listed them as such. Also I excluded death and doom metal because I don't particularly enjoy them. If someone wants to list some good death and doom bands then go for it.

Metal, for me, is just a sort of "side dish" that I don't touch too often. I don't like most of it, honestly, but there are a few bands that I really enjoy. They're pretty lightweight stuff compared to a lot of other metal, but whatever. Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater, and Iron Maiden. Yeah I know, generic overly popular bands and blah blah blah...but I still love them...especially Dream Theater and Metallica.

Oh, and Opeth's Damnation album is nice, but of course that's just progressive rock and not their usual death metal stuff (which I don't like anyway).

By the way, for your genre list, don't Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax go under thrash? Or are you not recommending them?

...the fact that I only seem to like old metal makes me feel old. ;-;

And for the record, I really dislike how critics and such are still using the original "metal" term to describe "roots of metal" bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.

As far as popular goes I could care less. What matters is if they are good. There are lots of popular bands that are excellent. Iron Maiden being one of them. Metallica for me however has never been good. Same with Megadeth.

By the way, for your genre list, don't Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax go under thrash?

Funny that those four bands are the so called "big four" of thrash. Even though there were thrash bands that started before them developing the same sound. Plus there are the three "kings of Teutonic Thrash" Sodom, Kreator, and Destruction. All of which have been around just as long and are still good. I'll admit Slayer's first two albums were ok, but past that no. Plus Anthrax raped metal by putting rap lyrics to it.

Yah those bands are most definitely rock, not metal.

Well that is because old metal wins harder. In any case I listen to centuries old classical music (or rather more recent recordings of it) so imagine how old I feel. <.<...>.>

Oh good, I'm glad you're not one of those silly metalheads that bashes me for not expanding into less popular bands. >.>

But really, you never liked Metallica or Megadeth? I find that pretty surprising. But it's cool you like Iron Maiden. They were my first metal band.

And for the record, I hate Slayer and Anthrax, but I thought I should mention them for the whole "big four" thing anyway. :3

Some Melodic Death is fine, but most of it is garbage.

Core music is terrible. Simple as that. Especially grind.

Lucky you, what got me heavily into metal (very very sadly and I deserve to be shot for this) was Slipknot. Of course I made a large jump of genres into the real metal though. From numetal (Slipknot) to black metal (Carpathian Forest). Suddenly I wasn't as idiotic anymore.

I am glad I found a fellow metalhead!

Isn't that a nice warm fuzzy feeling you have right now?

Yah doom is much too slow for me. Or rather it is excruciatingly slow. I mean, other genres have their slow songs. But they are not so slow as to make me want to fall asleep even though I am on a roller coaster.

I like quite a lot Blind guardian, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish and Within Temptation. These last 2 are more symphonic metal.Within the same stile, Epica, but I've just heard couple of songs from them

Yah for me most "symphonic metal" is kind of iffy. Especially Nightwish. I love operatic vocals. But the rest of their sound is a big meh. They could do a lot better.

Another couple of bands that haven't been mentioned that i personally like:
Children of bodom, their older stuff tho!!!
Sinergy
In Flames

Any one know of any recent bands that are any good?... im sorta stuck in the 90's metal and whatever my brother put onto the computer. Need some new stuff to head bang too haha.
