well all i had ever used it for was music files and although it takes up a lot of room on your hard drive it is pretty safe. i had it for almost 4 years and i never once got a virus. so i guess it all depends on what your using it for.

Limewire usually only gives viruses if used to download programs. If you download music your pretty safe as far as that goes. I've used it on and off for about 3 years now, never had a virus from it.

There have been rumors of people getting arrested because they download music from LimeWire... Is that true? (Sorry if I sound stupid, but -being a LimeWire user- I'm worried and curious... =/)

This guy from Yahoo! Answers hit the nail right on the head.

While using Limewire to download music is illegal, nobody has been sent to prison for it. For the most part they face lawsuits from the RIAA to attempt to force them to pay fines. Legally, the crime is copyright infringement, and the fine is between $750.00 and $150,000.00 per file illegally downloaded. The actual amount is set by the courts, although the RIAA often settles for around $10,000.00 or so. The amount tends to go up if you take it to court - a Minnesota woman was found guilty of illegally downloading 24 songs, and the jury set her fine at $9,000.00 per song.

And in all seriousness, how could you not know that it's illegal? That's like saying you didn't know it was illegal to walk into a store, grab a CD and walk out without paying for it.

My Mcafee security site advisor says they've received several spammy emails from that limewire site.

It depends how you look for things, you gotta know about how big your song is, if it's like 4 minutes on Youtube... And about 34kb, cahcnes are, it's a pop up going, "GET AN iPOD NANO!!" but there are better ways like... Bittorrent.

I had limewire going for a while, but it stored a whole bunch of backup crap and random spam , cookies, trackers and junk on my computer to the point that it ate away the majority of my hard drive. I use bearshare, which just gives a few stupid pop ups every now and again, but no excess. Although i think now you have to pay for it, unless you've got the older version running.
one man's story, is all.

I think you should switch over to Kazaa I hear it's efficient and reliable. *sarcasm*

Well, why don't you try torrents instead, like BitComet - there's more stuff, it's faster and there's much less "fakes" - like empty files or files that contain viruses. I used to have the Kazaa and LimeWire a long, long time ago... but due to bad circumstances I switched, and now I use only Torrents. Therefore, it is also easier to check if the file is corrupted or faked comparing to LimeWire, Kazaa (etc) where you download the unknown stuff.

Friend of mine uses lime wire constantly, I've personaly never heard him complain about viruses. Then again his computer is really crapy so I guess it wouldnt matter that much.

Yea i use limewire whenever i need to and bitcommet jsut the same way hehe.

Line wire for simple single songs and bit combit for the whole album :fruit:
And i might have a virus but my computer is shit so like Russkie's friends's computer it doesn't matter to me either way -_-' *sigh* (needs a new comp.)

as in seriously...you can get a virus frm limewire? OMG!!

strike7785
06-05-2008, 02:28 PM
I use lime wire from time to time but not a lot for some other reason that ill explain, but first... Most files are safe however if the file is unknown then dont download. Also if you have some type of firewasll such as Norris Anit Virus or or Mcfae you can scan whatever your downloading to lower the risk of there actually being a virus. Now from what I hear and even though thousands of people around the world are using lime wire, people have been cought and charged with stealing and have had to pay a very large fine and send to jail for a year or so. So be very careful. In my oppinion if its one or two songs evey now and then you have nothing to worry about. If your downloading 10-20 songs every day then there is a good chance you coule get cought. I would suggest using a torrent of some kind. One of my dads friends about 6 months ago was cought and had to pay a hefty fine so be careful.

@ Jack.

I heard about that story one day from my Chemistry teacher. It's why I stopped using Limewire around February.

Previously, I had used it for a couple of years without too many complications. It's not bad.

If you're going to use LimeWire, there a few things you've got to be aware of:

1. DO NOT download programmes, they'll most likely have a virus. Not all of them will, but most.

2. Always hover over the song you download to see the run-time, and other details, if it has all that, it'll be most likely virus free.

3. DO NOT download movies, they're just a hassle and instead of the movie you'll probably get porn, and we don't want that do we?

4. DO NOT download the first songs that appears after 2 seconds, they'll be called EXACTLY whatever you typed in, so if I were to put "Elvisssssssss", it would come up as "Elvissssssss", and they carry SpyWare, Trojans, and other malicious things.

5. DO NOT download a bunch of songs at once, it WILL lagg and become unresponsive.

That's about it, enjoy LimeWire!

Personally, I've been using limewire for 3 years to download music and never had any trouble yet. My limewire, everytime it detects something wrong with the file it asks if i want to keep downloading the file or not.

nah man its not intirely safe to d/l on limewire, once you enter a band (random) and search the 1st two that are found are most likely a virus, it has the exact detail you writin down, also a dirty one too looks somethin like "(random)sexbleepbleepbleep".
Yeah i had to sensor that :P lol, that and if you do download music off limewire i suggest you preview it while its 50% done, if it doesn't play any sound that may be a virus to, not 100% sure, but i've downloaded files that havn't played a sound once i previewed it and that file was corrupt, and my anti-virus picked up on it - if you have an anti-virus you should be fine :P

I've had Limewire for quite sometime now, it doesn't seem dangerous at all, but if you look into it, you'll find that there are some corrupt files, and its pretty easy to avoid, as i mentioned above.

The thing with Limewire is that even though its file sharing the big companies still have ways of tracking you down. The best way to avoid this is to not have upload anything, or as soon as your done dl you turn off Limewire immediately. Same thing applies to torrents, you can dl without worrying but if you upload there is a chance for you to get caught because technically your ok on the dl, because your not the one uploading the stuff you have to the rest of the world. They are looking for the distributors and that why they go after the uploaders.

I personally prefer Frostwire, but it's very similar and based on the same GNU network.

Neither Frostwire or Limewire are likely to give you viruses unless you don't have the common sense to not download something that is much smaller/larger than it should be. It's also a good idea to avoid things that don't show a kbps count, although those are sometimes tag errors and not really a "virus." Other times they're just corrupt files that won't work, but won't necessarily harm your computer.

Honestly, I really prefer having physical copies of music, so I end up paying for most of my music anyway, but I have dabbled in P2P music downloading in the past. Can't say I regret it. The RIAA needs to have their shins kicked anyway and most bands make more than enough money for what they need.

If u only using limewire for ur mp3's it's cool but if u start downloading other crap like softwareand so forth u'll get infected ...so if u gonna be doing that I suggest u get a good anti-virus programe and anti-spyware

For me, I get a virus even though i have a virus protector. The virus says: Active Update. It pops up every half hour and is so annoying because the computer doesnt say its a virus.
I use utorrent.

stephy1014
09-28-2008, 03:20 AM
if you do get limewire just make sure you have virus protection if you dont then good luck i downloading it with no protection and it completly fired my computer it erased everything and yeah but other wise then that you should be fine
