I can't really find a most popular world wide, But John and Mary are top for the US. this year. Here's an interesting link with several countries. http://www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/naming/top10namesaroundtheworld/

Typically biblical names. There's technicalities that come into play though, ie. translations. My name is the scottish rendition of what is the most popular north american name, John. So by default I could be John, but I'm not. Just as Bob is a derivative of Robert, and as Bill is to William, or Pablo to Paul. If we're going that route then ya, I'd follow soulten and probably go with John for men...and ya, probably Mary for women...or Jen, I know a lot of Jens.

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Muhammad is overall the most commonly used first name. Obviously it's mostly in Asia that it's popular, but Asia does take up an extremely large portion of the world, so...yeah.

I've heard that too, but not as a first name, just the most commonly used name generally. It can be a first, second, third,...last name, but I'm not sure it's ranked as the most popular first one.

Apparently, the name Emily has been the most popular name for a girl eleven years in a row, and the name Jacob has been the most popular for boys nine years in a row. This isn't worldwide, but in the United States.
I'm sure you could find a website like that for other countries if you wanted to know.
