Trip-Hop

I'm normally a rock n' roll girl, but that's not always all I listen to. I also enjoy some electronic work, rapcore, and now trip-hop.

Trip-hop took off in the 90s, and while it was never alarmingly mainstream, it has maintained a certain popularity. In my opinion, there are two bands that were the most important to trip-hop, and those bands are Massive Attack and Portishead.

Out of those two, Portishead is by far my favorite. Hell, Portishead is one of my favorite bands, period. Their debut album Dummy was where I started with them...and I was hooked.

So yeah, in this thread, discuss trip-hop. Or, more importantly, discuss Portishead and Massive Attack. :3

Hmm, I guess it is somewhat obscure to some people.

Trip-hop is sort of a downbeat hip-hop style that typically uses electronic stylings and no rap vocals, instead using a mellow singing style. The reason people call it trip-hop is because it tends to be a bit...well, "trippy" I guess. It's experimental and often psychadelic, so it's stereotypically a stoner genre. But it's not just for stoners of course.

Try listening to Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" and Portishead's "Mysterons" for two great, yet very different, examples of trip-hop.

ahh.. now i know what you mean!!.. though i have heard it before.. it would be surfice to say that its very similar to how techno and trance would be! take note.. am just comparing the difference, they are not the same.. hope you understand what i mean

Damn, when I saw the title I was like "Ooh Trip-Hop, I'll talk about Portishead and look like someone with infinite musical knowledge" but duh..

I wish I would be Brittish, great music comes from there (but then again I wish I'd be from Iceland because awesome music comes from there too and they have great subsidies for music). First time I heard about Portishead was at a party from a drunk friend, and at the time I didn't get a word of what he said and heard "Party Shed", I spent days searching for that non-existent band until I asked him for the name again. This kind of trippy music is awesome. Beth Gibbons' voice is awesome. Unlike you, I started with their recent album "Third" and ended with "Dummy". That's when I found my favorite song by them, "Sour Times".

I never heard Massive Attack but I've read that Portishead's Geoff Barrow once worked with them or something so I'll find some songs. Any suggestions except "Unfinished Sympathy"?

Try "Angel," "Teardrop," "Karmacoma," and "Inertia Creeps" along with the aforementioned "Unfinished Sympathy" to start with, I guess.

Although my best suggestion would be to try a full album, not everyone likes to go that far I guess. But at least try a few of the ones I mentioned.
