I have been watching cartoons my whole life, so anime is the next logical step, i love to watch anime becasue i feel that it is a way to escape everyday life and make u think that u r hero in a fantasy world, maybe thats why final fantasy is my fav game in the world. however, anime isn't like it used to be, the series that they r making now r great don't get me wrong, i love them and the stories keep me in the edge of my seat, but all anime to day to based on shot series...ex, Peacemaker. i found this to be a great anime and the part where the spys sister was killed made me tear up, and the fact was that is stoped on such a key part of the series. i just want anime to go on and on, like DBZ, i watched it from age 7 to 18, why can't todays anime be like that? What do u guys and gals think? I'd like to know.

That is no longer interesting to children. Many long animes suck, or a majority of the show. It's easier and gets to the point quicker if they are short. And another reason is that nobody wants to do a 300 episode running anime. It's a matter of time and money.

I think animes should range around 24 to 28 episodes on average. I don't like really long anime, but I just hate it when they are really short. Ex. Zero no Tsukaima Princess no Rondo, I think that there was a lot more they could have done, or they could have carried it over to a fourth season. (I'm not sure yet if they are coming out with another season or not, that I will have to check on.)

well if it will go on and on it will become boring and it will also depend on d story or d writer...it will depend on how dey make d story exciting n better...yeah many anime series r just short n i want more from it but sometimes it can't be helped...^_^

Series which go on and on are great, IF and only if they quality of the work doesn't decline. Take Bleach and Naruto for example. I watched Bleach up until episode 160-something, and then decided that while the concept is neat and all, filler arcs are completely lame.
I never watched naruto, but I remember people saying that like the last 70-something episodes were completely pointless (and indeed why the plug was pulled on that series).
The point here is I'd rather watch 20 episodes of greatness than watch 100+ episodes of mediocirty, though to be honest many of the ending of the shorter series lack in an actual ending (which is rather frustrating).

If they make more, shorter series they have a better chance of having a larger viewing range and keeping their viewer's attention. Longer shows can get very slow at times and viewers can be lost (I know many people who watched Naruto up until that, like, entire year of filler and now don't watch it). It's simple marketing. They can cover a wide range of genres to draw in a lot of viewers across the board and make them short so the boredom factor doesn't set in.
I dunno, makes sense to me. I also like a lot of the shorter series (although viduus is right when she complains about the sucky non-endings for some).
Plus, a lot of anime is either manga-based or game-based, and the longer mangas have already been turned into anime (Naruto, Bleach, OnePiece, FMA, Inuyasha, Detective Conan, etc.). Games don't tend to be starters for whole series, more like movies or OVAs (or so it seems to me). So they would have to create an entirely original story and somehow make it interesting enough to last 100 episodes, if not more, and that takes a lot of plot, and character, development and twists. It's just easier to make shorter series.

yea, u guys all have some very good points, i do agree that it should only be a long series if and only if the series dosen't go to shit!

Because who wants to watch hundreds of episodes of one series? I will admit that there are some great long series out there, but it seems that a lot of them are lacking in story. I get bored easily and I don't want to watch something that isn't going to have me interested at all times.
However, that doesn't mean that all of the short series are great. A lot of them have plots that I don't even like, especially the majority of the slice of life series out there. But, I'd rather watch a series that is twenty-six episodes and feel disappointed than watching hundreds of episodes and then realizing that I don't even like the anime.
As for the not-endings, I HATE those. I think a lot of the time, they are leaving it open so that they can do another season if it's popular enough but that doesn't always happen. >>

it's all a matter of money...the reason why the really good ones are only 26 episodes is they (the creators) dump a massive amount of time, talent and money into a project (i.e. Macross Frontier, Code Geass) and even though they are hugely popular, the chances of them continuing to be profitable is hot high enough 4 the companies to keep them going! it's like the old saying: Money makes the world go round...

Short is good to me...usually. It really depends if I'm satisfied or not with the ending. More often than not, I'm unsatisfied.
I love animes with just 24 eps. I almost always cry when it ends, but I'll never be able to watch Bleach or Naruto for example - they are way too long.
So Im the living evidence that long series are no longer a need.

after awhile of watching 200 episodes or so, it becomes boring and loses interest for most people, not to mentin all the fillers that I belive it mostly just a waste of time

i HATE long anime like DBZ, Pokemon, etc. with a passion (death note may be an exception, but i've only watched 1 ep. so far) but i think at most 50 eps. or so is enough. after that it becomes filler-after-filler until they come up with another good storyline. so i'd rather a series end on top, instead of me saying "please END" so i'd have to say i wholly disagree... but if they can make a lot of episodes and NOT have filler and recap eps. then i'm all for it. aslong as it's good, i do ot care, but series' tend not to be good once they go on-and-on-and-on like the energizer bunny A GOOD TIME FOR A RECAP EP. IS: if something happened WAAY long ago in the series, but 26 or so episode series' don't need recap episodes, imo)

Isn't the long anime's usually for children or young teenagers, even though they can be seen by people slightly older? DBZ, Naruto, Pokemon. Bleach too in part. And there are actually two long series running, Naruto and Bleach. I don't know whether there was fewer or more series like it in the old days.
Personally i feel i have too watch a show to the end once i'm started, but i must say the short series are better. Around 26 weeks is the best length, 52 often gets windy. Often a show will be aired in parts of 13 (which is the number of weeks in a season), 26 or 52.

Do I like short animes? Nope
Do I like long animes? Hell yah...maybe around 76 or 200 episodes.
IMO there are too many series dying, being chopped up,put back together, and then sent back out with the same fricking plot, characters, etc. Only thing different is the stlye in which it is done in and even that I consider to be BS. I want a long anime that allows me to keep my connection with the characters I have grown to understand. But as the saying goes "All good things must come to an end."(You have no IfuckingDEA how much i hate acknowledging that statement.)

Usually when the series get long enough they start repeating themselves.
F.ex Naruto have almost the same story for every arc so far. Naruto meets someone, whom he fear or dislike... But then he realizes they are just the same, and they end up being friends ( They might have too fight first).
Bleach, although i think it is better, are beginning to do the same.

I honestly can't pay attention to shows too much longer than 100 episodes. Mostly because of the boring fillers... but don't get me wrong, there are good fillers, but sometimes it's just like, so what, you know?

i know exactly what you mean... i'm more against recap episodes (in short series' anyway) if there ins't anything going on that i need a recap for, then i see no point in having one.
