So what favorite oldie but goodies do you have for a Rock n Roll bands form 1945-1990?
::D:
Also, which one do you think was the absolute best and why?
-Your answer must be at least one sentence, of course.
:fruit:
My Favorite is the band Queen. They are greatly known for their song called 'Bohemian Raphsady' and I also love their song "Another One Bites the Dust".

They just don't make rock songs like they used to in the 70's. Listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQifd7O_N5k and tell me that's not fckin EPIC. You just don't hear guitars do that any more these days :(

Queen's pretty awesome, but my favorite has always been Guns n Roses. It might just be how I was raised (my dad always had either GnR or ZZTop playing), but it's always been a favorite of mine and very nostalgic. My dad's song for me is sweet child o' mine cuz it came out about a year before I was born and that he relates to that song because of me.
I'm also a Styx fan.

i say the 70's is the cut-off line for "oldies-but-goodies" and even though i'm into better music now, i still enjoy elvis, buddy holly, the big bopper, etc. on occasion... it can't be old unless it's at least 30 years (i'm speaking mearly of music) thought i don't listen to them much as the music is too simple for me now... and waaaay too happy. it actually depresses me it's so happy. but if someone has some good oldie on i won't complain.

Ah, well, most of my favorites seem to fall under what people call "classic rock," yes...but that's not to say I don't enjoy some modern rock and 90s material as well.
But yeah, my favorite band ever is Led Zeppelin. Has been ever since I heard "The Ocean." I now own all of their albums and rock out to at least one of them almost every day.
Other favorites that are "old": The Doors, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, Queen, Electric Light Orchestra, Deep Purple, Marc Cohn, Tom Petty (solo and with The Heartbreakers), The Eagles, The Who, America, Boston...
You know, I'll just stop there. There's way too many old acts I listen to for me to sit here and name them all.
They just don't make rock songs like they used to in the 70's. Listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQifd7O_N5k and tell me that's not fckin EPIC. You just don't hear guitars do that any more these days :(

Sure they do. Listen to The Black Keys and tell me they don't sound like a 70s blues-rock band.
Also, ouch, poor metal fans. Metal is a form of rock, you know. I personally like some 80s heavy metal pioneers like Iron Maiden and Megadeth. And of course the ever-popular Metallica.

i think it's fair to say that Iced Earth, Hammerfall Dream Evil, Demons And Wizards, Blind Guardian, Masterplan, Nocturnal Rites, etc. would like a word with oyu on that stereotypical statement
you can find their vids and songs on youtube, just do a search. or i'll post 'em for ya if you're interested
also some bands don't SCREAM they growl. and most of the time the words are understandable if you are reading the lyrics WHILE listening to the song (bands like Amon Amarth, Ancient [fin], God Dethroned, Destroyer 666, Novembers Doom, Hollenthon, Naglfar [swe], etc.) growl, but they do not scream, it just takes some getting used to for some people..... those bands also have vids on youtube to chekc out if you're interested in something different than mainstream garbage (imo)
if you want info on said bands (lyrics, albums, band info, etc.) visit www.metal-archives.com please let me know what you think of the bands i mentioned (after listening to a few songs, that is)

This is and wasn't my Idea to admit extreme genres here, you do know "Metal" isn't a Classic Rock type, this thread was made to talk about classics and good ol' Hard Rock like Led Zepplin, Kiss, and AC/DC. not metal or damn punk music. props to them them because they will get their own thread cause they don't belong here and seriously Metallica? you're nuts for even thinking that. Geez, this is thread made for Rock/Hard Rock only Via 1945-1990 exactly, so please go take your dammed dreary Metal and daft Punk junk elsewhere. They are not mainstream Classic Rock- they are cult genres (Metal Heavy Metal, Punk, Daft Punk, ect. are cult genre).
Also I love Buddy Holly/Holiday, he died in a plane crash, its a tragic thing he was taken from his life so early, but he created the the song: "peggy sue" ^^

I don't mean to be offensive, but you should probably read up on genres a bit..."classic rock" is not a real genre. It's just a radio term. All it means is "rock music from the 1950s to the 1980s." If you listen to a classic rock station, sure, they usually won't play Metallica or something, but they will play The Clash, which is a punk band.
Metal and punk both fall under rock from 1945 to 1990. And you know, I wasn't really trying to include them in this thread. I was just mentioning that I enjoy them on the side.
You don't need to overreact and go bashing other people's tastes. That's sort of rude.
Oh, and I quite enjoy Buddy Holly as well. Peggy Sue is indeed a great song. My other 50s favorites are The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddly, and Bill Haley.

For me, I figure if it's old enough for a history book, it can be considered old and 20 yrs. is the cut-off for history text books, so music from the 80s, I would still consider old, not to mention all the changes that have happened in popular music that make that 20 yr. gap seem even longer.

Well like I said then it was considered classic cult music here and falls that way by me. I didn't mean to make you think "overreaction" its just clearly doesn't fit in my thread here, that's good of you to listen to them, however maybe if you want to list them out or chat on them go right ahead and make a thread for them. I don't mind I made this for all the music I remember on via 194O's early to 1980's late. I was an 80's kid yeah, so understand that there are people who still hate or don't consider Metal or Punk a Rock genre or see it as "extreme". Really this is all I meant. I see it as not rock but its own genre, Metal and classic punk as a sub-category. I knew someone was gonna say The Beatles they are good yeah, they("we") love you ya! ya! ya! The song Strawberry Meadows is my brothers favorite he thinks its epic, lol it is maybe but so is any song they ever played. Abbey Lane is my favorite.

Uh, that's "Stawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane." You confused Penny Lane with Abbey Road, which is an album.

Haha, well, as long as it's still a normal name I think they'll be okay.
But I don't really like the name Penny much anymore, so I switched to Michelle...which would still be named after another song by The Beatles. "Michelle" is what it's called. Great song. You can even learn a bit of French from it.
Hmm...although, I can't think of a Beatles song I don't like. I suppose their early work is pretty mediocre compared to their later work, but it's still good pop-rock material. Sometimes I think their song "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is kinda lame, but in retrospect, it's not so bad.

Black Sabbath is one old rock band I was never really able to get into all that much. They just seem really dull to me a lot of times, especially after Ozzy left and Dio stormed in and turned them into a carbon copy of his own band (Dio).
But nevertheless, Paranoid is still mostly a good album. Their debut is pretty good too, especially because of the song "The Wizard."

Well, I can't stand the new wave bands you listed, but there was at least one new wave band that I enjoy, and that's The Cars. They were the only ones who really balanced the synths and guitars correctly, if you ask me.

Yeah, I know. "Piano Man" is a Billy Joel song from his album of the same name. "The Entertainer" is also a Billy Joel song, from the album Streetlife Serenade.
What do you mean by "they also did their own solo versions?" Billy Joel's career is a solo career...they were always solo career songs.
Personally, I think "Piano Man" is a much better song, though.

the kids are alright is the first who record I got my hands on/nabbed from my dad's record collection.

He doesn't have any natural singing talent at all, but the overall mood and bluesy stylings of their work makes his voice quite compatible with the instrumentality. And while his poetry is very unrefined, it contains some really astonishing imagery and I agree that overall he was a good poet.
I really love The Doors as a whole. Second favorite band ever, actually. They do have a couple god-awful songs though...like "Wintertime Love" and some of the stuff from The Soft Parade.

The clash is a kick ass band. The mescaleros are beyond the classic stage at this date and time, but they're good too...just saying.
I've got an original UK press of London Calling in my record collection. so happy.

The Clash is pretty awesome, yeah. They have by far my favorite punk material. The Sex Pistols can't even touch the greatness of punk that is London Calling.

the sex pistols are some great punk rockin' out, but they were more...influential, then they were a good band. Sid was no John Entwistle, I'll put it that way, But he got in people's faces way better.

Cool, I really don't like Nazareth or Foghat...and Black Sabbath, Dio, and the Grateful Dead are sort of hit-and-miss for me. And Stealers Wheel is only good for one song ("Stuck in the Middle With You").
But overall, nice list.

beach boys are classic. My dad used to play them all the time when I was a kid. I've got too many of their songs embedded into my brain even though I don't listen to them very often.

I'm not much for 80s New Wave music...and I'm not sure it was popular enough to "move mountains." I think the FoS haircut is more memorable than any of their music, unfortunately for them.
Actually, when it comes to New Wave, I mostly stick with The Cars and Depeche Mode,

It's hard to pick one favorite, it's hard to even pick 10 favorites. But I guess off the top of my head I am a huge fan of America and their songs "Horse with no name" and "Carry on my wayward son"
"Carry On Wayward Son" is by Kansas, not America. Both, however, are good bands.
I like almost all rock and roll from this period... It's such a good time for music.
Well, I'm not so sure about the 80s and 90s. Synthesizers never have been my "thing."

They just don't make rock songs like they used to in the 70's. Listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQifd7O_N5k and tell me that's not fckin EPIC. You just don't hear guitars do that any more these days :(
Oh, and I'm talking about 70's ROCK. Not Metal. Metal sucks.
ok, I will overlook your ignorant and meaningless "attack" on metal and I'll just reply to this thread.
Queen is indeed great and my fav songs are "killer queen" and "princes of the universe".

Heh, you're only like the third person to correct him on that. :3
Kansas, in my honest opinion, is not a good band. They're kind of everything that went wrong with old prog rock, along with ELP. Kansas had the tendency to be stupidly "experimental" in a way that caused overly lengthy synth-heavy songs with extremely weak lyrical content and no decent sense of melody. There's a pretty good reason their only real hits were "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry on Wayward Son," and that reason is probably that they're the only decent "normal" songs that they ever did, although Carry On still contains many elements of their progginess. Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Rush, and Genesis (mostly)...now that's good 70s prog.
America, on the other hand, is pretty good. I'm not way too keen on how fast they begin deteriorating after their debut album, though...and by the 80s they were ruined, unfortunately. But yeah, they've got many early great songs like "Horse With No Name," "Ventura Highway," "Tin Man," "Sister Golden Hair," "Only in Your Heart," and "I Need You."
By the way, synths in the 80s and 90s are more attached to pop rather than rock, although I'll certainly admit that New Wave rock was very synth-heavy in the 80s...The Cars and such. But when it comes to most mainstream rock in the 80s, synths weren't the problem...the reintroduction of glam rock, this time called "hair metal," was the problem. Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Scorpions, etc...not necessarily always completely bad, but mostly bad, if you ask me.
I really need to learn to stop while I'm ahead instead of over-explaining my opinions on music constantly.

I'm getting the feeling you just download via P2P, and thus you have all your names and songs messed up. Or maybe somehow they're just typos, but if they are, then...wow.
Okay, first of all, it's "Led Zeppelin." It's "Foreigner." It's "Def Leppard," and "Cherry Pie" is not by them. That's by Warrant. There's no "the" in Scorpions' name. "Eagles," and "Hotel California." Also, "Kansas."
By the way, if you miss the way people used to play guitar, pick it up yourself. It's a lot of fun. Also, there are actually still artists playing the guitar in pretty outstanding ways. Ever heard of Tom Morello, from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave? He's amazing. Plus you've got newer artists like The Black Keys who are still laying down the old Zeppelin-esque blues-heavy riffs.

Led Zepp, obviously.
Of course, it might really happen...but Plant says he won't tour with them, so that kind of ruins it.
