I've been pondering this question for a while now. We all know of mainstream anime such as Bleach and (sigh) Naruto, to some extent even Death Note has become that. My question is how do you pick and choose new anime you want to watch?

Word of mouth? Do research? Have a dartboard with random names?

Well, I usually watch anime depending on the story/plot only. Something like the Kyou Kara Maou! story. It looks interesting.

I go to forums such as this one, and take down names of anime that other people like and then go to MyAnimeList and look them up. I have a pretty long list of anime that I want to watch so that whenever I need a new series, I have a list of anime that have already intrigued me to choose from.

As for what anime intrigues me, I generally don't enjoy slice of life anime and so if I see a picture with a guy and fourteen high school girls around him, I pretty much wouldn't want to watch it. I read the reviews that have been posted and the plot as well as how long the anime is (I don't like really long anime unless they are REALLY good because I get bored easily).

Other than that, I occasionally choose a random anime from a site and watch the first episode. I guess it's all trial and error, really. haha.

everybody here throws out reference titles all the time at the "what should I watch next" threads. I check those out, scavenge through people's "ultimate anime lists", watch some trailers and such, or sometimes check in on whether or not there's an anime for a manga I'm reading (though that's usually the other way around). After all that, I start hunting down synopses, and try and find trailer's or episodes if I haven't already passed one by. Often on the hunt you find a handful more than you'd expect too.

I usually pick one at random, and watch the first episodes, if it has a good plot or its what i would consider funny i'll finish it, if not i'll watch it whenever new episodes of the anime(s) i'm watching aren't available yet.

Out of sheer, curiosity, and I'm not just asking this because I'm a reviewer, do you guys read the reviews on AF?

sometimes i go look at manga and check online if there's a anime for it...

and sometimes the reviews

Most accidentally. From searching forums to forums, I learn some animes to watch. If I feel like it, I watch them. The more people talk about something, the more I feel watching. It all depends on the mood. If I feel watching some type of genre or something new, I also search to anime websites (Animefuel, Anime News Network etc.) then do some picking.

Out of sheer, curiosity, and I'm not just asking this because I'm a reviewer, do you guys read the reviews on AF?

Sometimes.

No, I don't. A lot of the reviews are poorly thought out in my opinion.

But referring to the first question, I go by word of mouth.

Funny...if you don't read then how would you know they are poorly thought out?

There a lots anime.
I just experiment with them, watching the first episode and the storyline.
Sometimes I read its sypnosis or read its manga....
There I can just visualize and imagine wat will it become when its animated....
But u know it also come down to its producer whether to follow the original story or just jumble and create a new plot without the origianal one...
One anime that i think fall to this catogery is Negima!
So thats my opinion.....

Out of sheer, curiosity, and I'm not just asking this because I'm a reviewer, do you guys read the reviews on AF?

No, sorry maybe I just miss it...

I used to try watching the first episode of a show to find out if I'd wanna watch the rest, but I've stopped doing that since I found some great series which the first episode didn't do it justice.

No, I don't. A lot of the reviews are poorly thought out in my opinion.I hope to change that (though reviewing does seem to be limited by the format we stick to, but that's an entirely different issue) :P

Hmm, sometimes if I'm bored, I look at random amvs, and if it caught my attention, I'll remember it, and give it a try. Sometimes if I really don't got a clue what to watch, I do research. But most of the times, I'm trying the ones out I've heard of.

What's wrong with the format? Can't reveal too much about the show, and I personally am hesitant to put too much personal thoughts about a show into a review as I feel it needs to be more unbiased. Thus when read you only get an overview of what the show is.

As I generally do my research on MyAnimeList, no, because most series already have reviews and recommendations and such. However, I probably will use the reviews forum whenever I'm at a loss for what anime to start next . . . so, some time in the near future.

However, about you saying that you are reluctant to put personal feelings into something--I thought that, as a general rule of thumb, a review is how a person sees the story. Perhaps you could divide it into plot summary and then a few paragraphs on how the story did or did not appeal to you? I usually read several reviews simply because they all come from different points of view and if your review of an anime doesn't have how you feel about it in it, it's kind of pointless.

Though, I suppose there might be site restrictions against this. I haven't really looked at the forum at all.

That's true. I found the same problem when I reviewed Death Note, personally.

Regardless, review procedures isn't why I made this thread, so to put it back on track...

I used to wait for others to watch stuff and then tell me to watch it, but at some point that was taking too long. More recently I've been going through every title AF has, reading some wiki about it and reviews from here (if there is one), then watching the first few episodes. It's worked out fairly well so far, though there have been a few shows to which I just said no.

I just usually watch the first episode of the season and see if i like i also read about it on forums and see how other people think about it to broaden my perspectives on the show.

If i do like the show, then i'd write it down for future references if i want to watch another the next episode while i wait for bleach or nuruto to come up lol

I usually watch mainstreams, like long series. But I just stopped, because I don't have time. Watching one series for a long time really bored me, too. If its also in manga versions, I prefer to read the manga, since I can catch up for atleast 5 hours of reading, compare to watching 30+ epis. I prefer to watch shorter animes. Its more easy to understand for me, and it saves time. It doesn't matter if its popular or not...

Mainly I just happen across them by accident, or I'll look on myanimelist.com which lists a lot of anime. As for why I watch them, its because of the plot and the art I'm really big on those two things with anime.

I just read a small review/summary of the anime. If it sounds interesting, I put it on my want to watch list. I also look at the genre of the anime, if its slice of life it automatically goes on my list. In the end, I get more than what I expected.

For me, I can't help but watch anything with vampires, so thaths' how I stumbled upon Vampire Knight.
Bleach was something my brothers and I used to watch.
