Red
Part One: Autumn Jesse Dark

He stood at the top of the worn stone steps, they were ancient, almost as old as he was and like him they did not crumble under the feet of the world. He surveyed the buildings that spread out in front of him and listened to the sound of a thousand sleeping. A baby was crying in the distance, un-heard by it’s parents, but he heard it.

A cool breeze tousled his copper hair, in the sunlight his soft locks would shine red, but there was no longer any light for him. His skin was pale and silvery under the shine of the distant moon, if he listened hard enough he could hear it whispering. Or was that just the soft rustle of the breeze over the trees that spread behind him, encircling The Tower.
He began to descend the chalky white steps, no need to hurry; he had all the nights in the entire world, only the sun could stop him now. The inevitability of the suns rays peaking over the horizon was all that would halt the descent into his bloody world.

When he reached the bottom of the steps he had to arch his neck to see the tops of the houses, they had seemed so insignificant before yet now that they towered above him he was reminded that the insignificance was in fact himself. He moved through the night a lot faster now, his sleek, strong body powering him forward, his black clothes rustling around him, pointless garments, built to keep in warmth the that he did not have.
He stopped outside the house where the baby still cried, ignored by its parents. That disgusted him, how could the adults in this house ignore their own kin and… another breeze blew over him sending the scent of blood rushing through him and a fresh pool of venom into his mouth. Now he understood, as the baby’s cries stooped to quieter sobs; Regal Ebony Dark understood.

He turned to walk away but the smell was too alluring and he found himself wanting to return to the house, the monster inside of him lusting for an easy kill. A night off of the chase, drain the blood from the already dead parents, take the baby as well.

He slipped into the house through the broken front door, and slinked down the pastel green hall, he could already tell from the hall that the child’s parents were wealthy. He scented the air and found that the scent trails split in two directions, one came from the direction of the baby’s cries the other from a room off to his left.
He went into the room to his left first; a male body was spread across the floor, a hole in his forehead still seeping blood. His hair was red with blood and had apparently once been blonde, and his eyes were pale and empty. A fresh slick of venom filled Regal’s mouth and he spat it out.
He stooped and ran his finger tips through the pool of blood on the wooden flooring, then lifted them to his lips and run his tongue over them, the taste made his throat scream for more. He ignored the dull ache and got to his feet, looking around the room. The walls were painted red and had pale squares on them where paintings used to be, the room was full of bare tables and shelves. This was a burglary gone wrong, or maybe it had gone exactly as planned, but surely any murderer would have killed the baby and finished the job.
Regal realised that he should leave the victims in their current states seeing as if he moved them their killers would never be caught, he frowned, since when did he care about such things? He turned slowly and walked back into the hallway, and followed the child’s sobs until he reached a pale yellow door. He pushed it open and entered the baby’s room.
The room was sky blue with fluffy white clouds stencilled onto the walls, during the day the room would probably be lit by the suns light pouring through the huge bay window that was next to a white cot, but the only thing the window was letting in was the moons silver glow, making the room feel eerie and strangely quiet. The baby had stopped crying the moment Regal had entered the room.
A woman was sitting on the floor, her dead body leaning against the cot, she also had a hole in her forehead but her body was completely naked, she had been raped. She had blonde hair, matted with blood. Even with the hole in her head and her face a film of pasty death she was beautiful. Regal approached the cot and stared down at the baby girl, lying in the pool of her mother’s blood that had crept into the cot after the woman had been shot, the force of the bullet exploding the back of her head.
He reached into the cot and delicately picked up the baby, he held her away from his cold body, studying her with his pale green eyes, fresh life, how badly he wanted to take her. The humans would know no different, he was a secret, how could they ever link this child’s death to a secret. He brought the girl closer to him and she squirmed in his arms, but didn’t cry.
Her gorgeous blue eyes showed no fear when she looked up at him from under her long eyelashes, her mothers blood ran down her back and covered Regal’s hands. She must have been under a year old yet those eyes had already witnessed great horrors. Anger bubbled inside of him as he thought about how she must have been woken by the gunshot that had killed her father. He could almost see her mother running into the baby’s room to protect the precious child, and was probably over powered by the murderer who had raped her in front of her daughter and then shot her, close range execution, he fought back the impulse to hunt down the people who had done this, the scent was still fresh, he could do it. If it wasn’t for the baby, he had to make sure she was safe first.
He took a final look at the dead woman, staring up at him with blank eyes, he held the girl against his body with one strong arm and stooped in front of her mum, he reached out and closed the woman’s eyes with his pale long fingered hand.
“Don’t worry” he whispered “I’ll protect her.”

“Don’t worry” he whispered “I’ll protect her.”

He got to his feet and tucked the baby under his jacket, holding her awkwardly against his hard cold body, he left through the front door and stole away down the darkened streets, his throat aching for the girl the whole time, but he couldn’t bring himself to take her. Not when she was so innocent.

He had a memory, of a time when he was a lot younger when he was human. Nine years old. It was something that he rarely thought of, even after so many years it brought icy pain to his still heart. It brought with it a reminder of the great loss he had suffered; he could still feel the heat of the fire against his face from when he had watched his house burn taking his family with it. His mother, his father, his little baby sister.

When he had looked at the little girl, so unbelievably like his sister, and saw what someone had done to her parents he could not bring himself to hurt her further, even a babe feels pain. Even as she gurgled against his chest he knew she was hurting, and he had saved her. Even though he was well aware that a human family would have eventually found her the fleeting moment he had spent gazing into her beautiful eyes had told him that she would grow to be a beautiful woman. How could he trust a human family to protect her from the men she would face as she grew? He simply couldn’t.

He reached The Tower in the shortest time, having not taken the long route and not dawdled, and ran swiftly up the stone steps. He reached the door and rapped on it a total of three times, it swung inwards to reveal a grand foyer. It took up the whole of The Tower’s base and was lit by a roaring fire with a silver stair case in the centre that reached to the higher levels.
Black sofas were spread around the room, curved to fit neatly against the wall, there was a glass table that curved around the stairs, only broken where the stairs started, various items were strewn over the table, books and pens, sheets of paper, DVDs, CDs and a black Raven that watched him with narrowed black eyes.

The door slammed shut “What is that smell?” a delicate voice asked. Regal took a slow breath and turned to face his wife, Emelae was gorgeous, with flowing black hair and amber eyes held in a smooth rounded face. She had skin as pale as the moon and a small slim body; she wore a dark blue dress that out lined her curves and flowed around her feet. She had been brought up in Victorian times and had always loved the dresses, they were the one thing from her past that she never let go of.

“It is a baby. Her parent’s were murdered, I couldn’t leave her” he explained, keeping his voice quiet.

“Why? If the murderer was gone she was perfectly safe.” Emelae snapped, keeping her distance as the scent of blood put fresh venom in her mouth. “Why is there blood on it?”

“It’s her mother’s blood.” Regal whispered, pulling the baby out from under his coat.

“Oh my…” Emelae came forward, her wide amber eyes peering down at the baby. “Isn’t she lovely.” She reached out with a pale hand and stroked the baby’s head.

“Do you see now why she is not safe in these times Emelae?”

“Is she safe here Red?” Emelae used the name for Regal that she had used since the first time they had met and he had told her his full name. She also knew that the name warmed him as it reminded him of the colour his hair would go in the sun before he had been plunged into darkness.

“I’d never hurt her, would you?”

“No. I’ve always wanted a child.” It was true, she had wept for weeks when she had first found out that it was impossible for their kind to have children. All of her anger had disappeared the moment she had seen the baby, she reached out and took her from Regal’s arms.

“I’m going to give her a bath, wash away the horrors. “ She said, her voice light and airy as she walked up the stairs. Thirst was still burning in Regal’s throat, he knew his wife was also hungry but she was able to control it. He walked up the stairs to the next floor which was split into two rooms one of them was the bathroom, he could hear the taps running and Emelae talking quietly to the baby. He carried on up the stairs, passing through the third floor, which was a huge library, then the fourth, another room split into two, a kitchen and Jesse’s bedroom, he passed through the fifth which had a huge television and a few comfortable sofas and finally he reached the top floor.
The top floor was one big bedroom, with two huge wardrobes, one for Regal and one for Emelae. There was a curved white bed to the north of the room under a wide black curtained window that looked out over a large black lake. Not that the bed was really needed, vampires didn’t sleep.

He strode over to his wardrobe and pulled it open, taking out a pair of black tracksuit bottoms and a white cotton shirt. He pulled off his clothes that were smeared with blood and dropped them to the floor; he’d have to incinerate them.

Regal pulled on his fresh clothes and sat down on a large red sofa. He put his head in his hands, he had evidently not thought any of this through, how could a human grow up in a house of vampires? Even with vampires who could control their needs it was dangerous, yet he was sure that it would be more dangerous for her to live away from them.

“Jesse!” he called, a small pale boy with a head of sooty hair raced up the stairs and slid to a stop in front of Regal he looked about eighteen, he’d looked that age for fifty years.

“Regal.” He grinned, a smear of blood in the corner of his mouth, “You’re lucky I just got in.”

“Have you met our new addition?” Stupid question really Jesse would have smelt the baby the minute he’d arrived.

“You mean the human?” Jesse spat, he’d always disliked humans, but he had his reasons, and they were good enough for his hate to be marginally rational.

“Yes, I mean her.” Regal said gently, he knew how hard it would be for Jesse to accept her in fact he was scared that he wouldn’t at all.

“Why have you brought it here Regal?”

“Have you seen her?”

“No, I don’t need to, it’s human. What else is there to see?” Jesse’s voice was sharp. “I want it out Regal.”

“That is not your decision to make.”

“I live here as well.”

“And while you still do you will live under my rules.” Regal growled.

“But there is no way you can raise it in ignorance of our kind.” Jesse protested.

“I don’t plan to.”

“What happens when it realises what we do? When it realises that dearest daddy and mummy drink the blood of her kind?” Regal froze; he had him there, Jesse’s thin lips curled into a smile. “What if one day it sees you feeding? She’ll run screaming, it will be no different from any other human Regal!”

“We’ll raise her right, if we raise her to live by our rules…if we start feeding on animals, if we love her we can do it.” Regal said calmly, realising that what he was saying would be the foundation of the way he would be living for the next couple of decades,

“Feed on animals? I won’t live like that Regal.”

“You will live how I tell you to, I made you.” Regal cried,

“Then I’ll leave.”

“What?” Regal’s face dropped, Jesse could see a spark of sadness in his eyes.

“I won’t live here with that…thing.” Jesse hissed the last word.

“She isn’t going.”

“It is me or her Regal.”

Regal threw his hands into the air and jumped to his feet, “Don’t be stupid” he cried, anger sparking through him. “How can you expect me to choose?”

“It can’t be hard, your own kind or the human.”

“You haven’t looked at her. You haven’t seen what someone has done to her parents. She needs me Jesse.” Regal was suddenly quiet again, he ran his hand though his coppery hair and looked almost vulnerable. “I have to protect her.”

“What is wrong with you?” disbelief coloured Jesse’s tone.

“I don’t know, I just need to look after this child. I know that I have to do this.”

“Then do it without me.” Jesse said in a hard voice. He turned around and went to run down the stairs but Regal had his arm. Holding him back.

“Don’t leave Jesse, after 50 years, you can’t leave us.”

“I can. I won’t live with a human, they are evil creatures, and I can’t do it.” Jesse shook his head as he spoke, “They are our food! Not something we look after.”

Regal let his hand fall to his side, releasing Jesse, “It disappoints me that you think like that. Do me a favour, say goodbye to Emelae before you leave.”

“I will.” He turned and walked quickly down the stairs just like that, Jesse was gone, Regal stood at the top of the staircase, and listened to him speaking with Emelae, he heard Emelae give out a small sob and then the rustle as Jesse packed, it wasn’t long before the door slammed and Jesse had walked out of their lives. Regal could barely believe that it had happened so fast, it was the only time he had ever hated the way that vampires could move so quickly. He moved away from the stairs, feeling as if he was in a trance and sat on the bed. He heard the stairs creaking and seconds later Emelae appeared clutching a bundle to her chest with one arm, she put her finger to her lips.

“She’s asleep.” She said needlessly as she approached, something in her eyes told Regal that mentioning Jesse would be a bad idea. She sat next to Regal, pulling her legs up under her. “She’s perfect Red.”

“She still needs a name.”

Emelae looked down at the baby in her arms, a frown on her flawless face after a few seconds she whispered a name “Autumn.”

“Autumn Dark.” Regal rolled the name around in his mouth. It sounded right, fit nicely.

“Autumn Jesse Dark.” Emelae said, even quieter. “I like that better,”

Regal put his arms around his wife and pulled her against his chest, he gently kissed her forehead, and she turned her head so she could cry into his shoulder. He put a comforting hand on her back and pressed her against him holding her tighter, being careful not to crush Autumn.

“After all these years you’d expect me to have grown used to loss, it hurts me to know that we have just created another loss for us that I fear will come too soon. How are we going to do this Red?”

“Do you love her?” Regal asked.

“Yes”

“Then we can do it. We will have to make a few changes. Emelae you do realise that there is only one way that we can fail at this.”

“What’s that?”

“Lie to her.” Regal whispered into his wife’s hair. She looked down at the babe in her arms and pressed her forehead against Regal’s, they sat in each others arms and watched Autumn sleep.

In the next month Regal noticed that his wife smiled a lot more, even though living on animals was not enough to fully satisfy them, they had to get by. For Autumns sake. It was a struggle at first, in the first week Regal found that he had to lock himself away to keep from hurting anyone, venom was a constant taste in his mouth and a permanent reminder of what he could do.

It was coming up to summer and as the days grew longer and brighter Regal had to limit how much time he spent outside, although direct sunlight would not kill him it would cause him to become very hungry very fast and he could not afford that, they took every precaution they could around Autumn.

Emelae hardly ever left the house, they couldn’t risk putting Autumn on show, the police were looking for her. Regal had often spoken to Emelae about moving out of the town but she always refused, saying that she didn’t want to move away from the place where she had been born, of course that was a complete lie, he knew that she was waiting for Jesse to return, not that they ever spoke about that.

After a long day of trying to keep Autumn from crying, she was teething; Emelae sat at the kitchen table spooning a concoction of apricot and banana into Autumns mouth. Regal was out hunting, he was collecting blood for her and would be back any minute,

“Come on eat something, Red will be back soon.” Emelae told Autumn, with a smile on her rounded face. Regal and Emelae had already agreed that Autumn wouldn’t know them as Mummy and Daddy Regal had been adamant that it would be an insult to Autumn’s real parents.

Autumn gave Emelae a look that said ‘are you kidding me?’ and clamped her tiny mouth shut refusing to eat anything else. Emelae set the spoon down and looked into the child’s gorgeous blue eyes, tears appeared in them and Autumn gave a small whimper and held her arms out for Emelae to pick her up. Emelae scooped the delicate girl into her arms and held her close singing sweetly to her as she did every night when it was time for bed.

“Say sweet child say,
Where goes the beautiful day?
Love sweet child love
I’ll take you on a jour-ney
Listen to me Autumn
Sing sweet child sing
Where goes the day my beauty?
Sleep my Autumn. Sleep.”

By the time she had finished the song that she had made up Autumn was asleep in her arms. She kissed her small forehead and couldn’t keep the smile off of her face. She heard the front door slam a few floors below and it was not long before Regal stormed in clutching the day’s newspaper between his long fingers, he slammed it onto the kitchen table waking Autumn who began to cry . His face was a mask of pure hatred

“Red?” Emelae frowned. Bouncing the baby in her strong arms.

“Read it.” Regal growled.

Emelae scanned the front page, reading faster than humanly possible. Her expression went from confusion to shock to realisation.

“Wife and husband found dead in there home.
Last night Julie and Brandon Andrews were found dead in their home to the east of Creeds. Police are not giving out much information but it has been said that the killings show similarities to those of Sandy and Gareth Nickels, who were murdered a few weeks ago, police are still searching for their missing child and the murderer…”

Emelae reached out and touched Regal’s arm, tracing her fingertips over his strong muscles and down to where his fist was clenched, the tendons prominent on the back of his hand. His breathing was coming in short angry gasps. Emelae got to her feet and pulled him into a one armed hug, he was shaking all over.

“What if they had had a child Emelae?”

“I don’t know.” She whispered.

“I can’t let this carry on, that’s two families in one month” He put one hand on Autumn’s head and rubbed gentle circles into her cheek with a thin thumb trying to calm her gentle sobbing, it was as if she knew what he meant. He pulled out of Emelae’s embrace and headed towards the stairs.

“There is a bag of blood on the glass table.” Regal said, not an ounce of emotion in his voice. What he was going to do would push him to his limits, kill and not indulge.

“You don’t have to Red,” Emelae whispered, even though she knew that he did.

Regal turned and walked out of the room without looking back, he descended into the foyer and then out into the dark night. The night sky held no moon so the stars, which gave off just enough light for his highly advanced eyes, lit his way. He took the steps two at a time and when he reached the bottom he scented the air; blood was still fresh on the wind.

He jogged down the narrow streets following the scent of human blood, venom was flowing into his mouth, even though the scent was not strong, he had not tasted human blood for a month, he had been dead for over one hundred years and he had never gone so long.

He finally found the house where the murder had taken place, the door was barred with yellow crime scene tape, he slipped under it and walked through the house, the smell of blood was stronger in the living room, he breathed in the scent, a male was killed in the living room, just like Autumn’s father. He didn’t go looking for the female’s scent; he just spat out another wave of venom and scented the air. It didn’t take him long to find a scent, nearer the same age as the blood spill and from a person who was very much alive, one male. The murderer. No, he took in another deep breath, murderers. Plural.

Regal left the house, following the scent of three men through the darkened streets; the lampposts were both dim and too far apart, but once again his eyes were able to seek out the smallest amount of light and use it to his advantage. It surprised him when the scent did not disappear, and stopped right outside the door of a shabby bungalow, just a ten-minute drive from the house where the couple were murdered, and five minutes from The Tower; it made him sick to think that the people who murdered Autumn’s parents lived so close.

He cautiously approached one of the filthy windows and tried to look inside, but it was covered with black drapes, it was three am and the house would be dark, which really wouldn’t help Regal, sight was essential in what he needed to do, but it looked like he would have to rely purely on scent.

He crept around the front of the bungalow to the front door, keeping low to the ground. The door opened easily with a small crack, the locks were pathetic, revealing a dingy hallway littered with food wrappers. Regal crept inside; staying in a crouched position, ready to pounce. He could not see a thing. The house was pitch black as he had guessed it would be, but not silent. He could hear somebody moving about in the next room, evidently woken up by Regal opening the front door.

“Jeff, oi Jeff, there’s someone in the ‘ouse” a rough Irish voice was hissing urgently.

“Go back ta bed Frank.” Jeff said, stupid man, he was being too loud for his own safety, Regal now knew that Jeff was lying in the far corner of the room that’s entrance was a few feet in front of him.

“Jeff, I’m bein serious man!” the frightened Irish voice belonged to a man a lot younger than he should have been, how could a murderer sound so young and innocent? Regal took in the scents of the house and sure enough there were only three men there, all three of them had been at the crime scene.

The room a few feet in front of Regal was suddenly full of light that slipped out into the hallway, stupid men. “Oi turn that light out boy!” A man who wasn’t Jeff cried.

“There’s someone in the ‘ouse Luke. Shut ya mouth will ya?” Frank hissed.

Regal took a few steps forward so he was standing in the doorway to the small bedroom crammed with three beds and littered with cans of beer. He could smell the blood of the victims strongly in the room, possibly on the men’s shirts that were hidden somewhere.

The man in the corner, whom Regal took to be Jeff, quickly sat up in his filthy bed, his face a picture of pure horror. He had thick brown hair that looked incredibly greasy, he said nothing. But the other man in the bed at the opposite end of the room, Luke, cried out in shock and pulled a gun out from under his pillow. Frank stood in the middle of the room, not moving.

Frank was a young boy of about twenty-four; he had bright ginger hair, green eyes and a bad case of acne. “Who are ya?” he asked in a shaky voice. Regal couldn’t blame him for the fear, it wasn’t every day that you saw a man with a face like his, contorted with hate, he glared at the men.

“I know you killed the Nickels and the Andrews.” He said, his voice a low growl in the back of his throat.

“You got the wrong people man.” Jeff piped up, his voice unwavering.

“No, I haven’t.”

“I think we’ll be the ones who decide that don’t you?” Luke took the safety off of his gun with a fatal click. Regal took a quick step towards Luke, and a gunshot echoed through the house, Regal took a step to the side, dodging the bullet.

“Nawh man, that’s not right.” Frank gasped.

“Now, did you boys kill the Nickels family?” Regal asked, cocking his head to the side slightly.

“No!” Luke cried.

Regal leapt across the room, dodging another bullet, he slammed Luke against the wall, the gun dropped to the floor. “Tsk Tsk, I don’t like liars Luke.”

Jeff was on his feet now, “Prove it! You have no evidence!”

“Oh but I do, I can smell their blood on you Jeff,” Regal hissed turning his head to look at the beast of a man, in his late thirties, who had stepped in front of Frank.

“Smell it? What are you some kind of animal?” Luke cried. Regal returned his attention to the man he had pinned up against the wall.

“And you, I can smell her all over you, Mrs Nickels I mean. You raped her Luke, then shot her in cold blood.” Regal opened his mouth wide exposing his teeth.

“Vampire.” Luke whispered, the colour left his cheeks; his eyes were suddenly filled with realisation, and fear. Sweet fear. Regal closed his hand around Luke’s neck and snapped it with a flick of his wrist; he dropped the man to the floor in a crumpled heap and turned to face Jeff and Frank.

“I’m going to ask one more time.” He kept his voice low and menacing. “Did you murder the Nickels and Leave their only child in a bath of her mother’s blood?”

Frank nodded silently; his eyes empty pits that just showed that he had given up. Regal flicked his gaze to Jeff who was holding a gun in his left hand. “Regal Ebony Dark.” Jeff hissed, “I know what you are now, I’ll kill you.”

“And on what do you base your assumptions?”

“My father used to tell me stories of you, and your wife, living up in that tower. You’ve been there for over a hundred years, you thought that each generation would simply forget you, but my father never did!”

Regal’s mouth stretched into a thin smile, “Now I have to kill you,” He ran forward and dodged out of the way of the third bullet, he spun around the human with so much speed that he was just a blur. He put a muscled arm around Jeff’s throat and yanked him down; he hit the floor with a bone-breaking crack. The gun flew out of his hand and landed at Frank’s feet, the boy had been standing silently in the corner, unmoving.

Regal dropped to a crouch beside Jeff and placed his strong hands on the mans chest, “I like the way you thought you could ever win this,” Regal laughed cruelly. “But how could you, you are just a man.” He raised his hands and slammed them onto Jeff’s chest causing the ribs to brake, puncturing the lungs and crushing his heart. He got to his feet. “Two down.” He hissed.

He walked towards Frank, so casually that under different circumstances he could have been walking up to his best mate in a park. Frank was holding the gun in a steady, pale hand. He pointed it at Regal.

“That can’t help you boy.”

“I know,” Frank turned the gun around and held it out for Regal to take. “Make it painless,”

Regal weighed the weapon in his pale hands and dropped it to the floor, he couldn’t risk spilling the blood of these men, he took Franks frail neck in one of his hands and tightened his grip.

“Would it help if I said I were sorry?” Frank asked.

“I’m not the one you should be apologising to, I didn’t loose my parents a month ago.”

“You have her don’t ya? The baby.”

“Yes. She is safe with me.”

“What is her name?”

“If you are stalling for time, nobody is coming.”

“Even if someone did come all you would have to do is flick your wrist,” Frank said, locking his eyes with Regal’s.

Regal considered this for a moment, “She is called Autumn, Autumn Jesse Dark.”

“I’m sorry Autumn” Frank whispered as he closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. Regal twisted his wrist, breaking the boys neck. A painless death, much more than he deserved.

Regal left the house, and walked silently back to The Tower, a single thought whirring in his mind, Jeff and Luke knew about vampires. How many more people did? By the time Regal reached his bedroom, where Emelae was sitting on the bed Autumn asleep in her arms, he had made a decision that would change their lives.

“Emelae, we have to leave, we aren’t safe here.”

“I’ll see you tonight.” Autumn called over her shoulder as she approached the black limo with tinted windows that was waiting for her outside Darlington 6th Form. She heard Jenny shout goodbye just before she slipped into the back seat, and found herself sitting next to Red.

“Tonight? Where are you off too?” he asked as the limo pulled away from the curb, he looked down at Autumn with curious eyes.

“Everyone officially finished their exams today so we are meeting up at Monica’s.”

“And you asked my permission when exactly?” Red’s voice was slick but affectionate as he curled his strong arm around Autumn.

“I don’t need your permission to go out anymore Red” Autumn said stubbornly, brushing a lock of white blonde hair behind her ear. She rested her head against Red’s shoulder and they slipped into an easy silence, it wasn’t until they were a few minutes from their house that Red spoke.

“Will there be drink?”

“Yes.” Autumn said curtly, she never lied to Red.

“Weed?”

“Yes.”

“Boys?”

“Yes.”

“You aren’t going.” He said in a voice that was meant to end the conversation.

“Bite me.” Autumn growled as the limo stopped, she hopped out, and waited at the door of her home, a huge manor house with six bedrooms, two living rooms, a dining room, a large kitchen and a scattering of bathrooms, for Red to unlock the door, she felt a cool hand close around her shoulder.

“I wish you wouldn’t use that terminology Autumn.”

“Sorry Red,” she said innocently, not meaning it.

“And I think it best not to let Emelae know about tonight, let’s just tell her that you are having a friendly sleep over at Monica’s with Jenny and Darien.” Red said as he unlocked the door and led Autumn into the house.

“Yes sir.” Autumn smiled, they entered a wide entrance hall with a staircase at the far end leading up to the bedrooms. Autumn could smell food cooking in the kitchen to her right and the television was on in the lounge to her left. She popped her head into the living room and glanced at the television, Emelae was watching the five o’clock news.

“Good afternoon.” Emelae said in greeting, “You’re a bit late.”

“I know, we had a small celebration after the exams.”

“So you left Red outside whilst you had your celebration?”

“Yup.”

“Good, that man needs a bit of patience.” Emelae chuckled,

Red strolled into the room holding two wine glasses filled with a thick crimson liquid. “So I suppose you are full of patience my dear?”

“Well of course I am.” Emelae replied delicately, her amber eyes fixed on the wine glasses.

“Then I suppose you won’t mind waiting a bit longer for this then?” Red indicated the glass in his left hand and took a sip from the one in his right. Emelae got to her feet and reached for the glass but Red held it high, out of her grasp. She jumped, higher than humanly possible, but Red quickly moved it to the side. He took a mouthful of blood from the glass in his right hand; Emelae took a few quick steps forward and pulled Red into a deep kiss, sucking the liquid out of his mouth. She pulled away and licked the remaining blood off of her lips.

“Now you’re never going to get your glass.” Red smirked.

“Fine,” Emelae turned her back on him and folded her arms “No sex.”

Red lowered the glass slightly “For how long?”

“Two years.”

“You can’t even go for two years!” he choked.

“Want to bet?”

He held her glass out to her and she took it with a smirk on her face, “You still can’t go that long!” he accused.

“Course I can. Unlike you. You’d give in after about a week.”

“Never.”

“Prove it.”

“Fine I will. And whoever gives in first isn’t allowed to hunt for five years.” Red growled.

“Deal.” Emelae grinned and drained her glass then turned to face Autumn, “Sorry dear, is there something you wanted?”

“Yeah I need a lift to Monica’s at six and I was wondering Red, if you aren’t to busy begging Emelae for sex, could you ask Jason” the chauffeur “to come pick me up.” Autumn gave a sweet smile.

“Sure, but I’ll have you know that Emelae is going to be the one begging.”

“Whatever, I’ll be back down in an hour.” Autumn waved her thin hand and turned out of the room, she walked up the flight of stairs and then down a pastel pink hall to a black door. She swung it inwards and stepped into her large lime green room.

It was furnished with a black double bed that was below a large bay window that looked out over the garden. There was a walk in wardrobe to her left with white wooden doors that matched the floor and a desk stretched along the right wall. In the centre of the room was a huddle of black and green beanbags. A black-rimmed ornate mirror was next to the wardrobe doors; its frame was extremely gothic and made of heavy metal.

Autumn crossed the room and threw open the doors to her wardrobe, she walked in and picked out a short black and baby blue striped dress that had a little black frill around the bottom and matched her eyes and a pair of black pumps. She carried the dress into her room and put it onto her bed and then slipped into her private bathroom to shower.

Ten minutes later and she reappeared, a green towel hugging her thin pale body. She dressed in some lacy underwear and pulled on the tight strapless dress, it took her another fifteen minutes to dry her thick white blonde hair ,that fell to just below her shoulder blades. She puffed her hair out when it was bone dry and applied some pale lip-gloss and a thin layer of eyeliner and massacre.

She stood in front of the gothic mirror to examine the end result. Of course she looked dazzling, her skin was flawless and her blue eyes shone like sapphires. She had a small but curvy body and her breasts were just the right size, add in a pair of skinny, smooth legs and no guy could resist her. She was as beautiful as a vampire but she had that added hint of colour in her cheeks that made her human. She knew how to look good and that made her dangerous.

It was six pm and all that was needed was a long black leather coat pulled in tightly at her waist to hide the clothes from Emelae. When Red called up the stairs Autumn was just shoving a few overnight things in a small green rucksack.

She exited her room and moved gracefully towards the stairs, but didn’t take the stairs, instead she sat on the banister, both legs on one side she was a lady after all, and slid down. Red caught her at the bottom, holding her close in his strong arms. He inhaled.

“You smell lovely,” he complimented. “Going to a party by any chance?”

“No, just a sleep over at Monica’s.” Autumn replied innocently.

“Can I come?” he asked with a fang-flashing smile, “Horror movies are my favourite.” He was carrying her towards the front door as he spoke.

“That’s because you are one big horror movie.” Autumn frowned.

“Only to deers.” He smirked.

Autumn felt a breeze rustle through her hair, she hadn’t realised that they were outside, hadn’t even felt his arm leave her so he could open the door, it didn’t bother her too much, she was used to the way he moved.

“Nawh I bet you could be the horror of this town if you really wanted to Red.” Autumn told him as he put her down and she slipped into the limo.

“Probably, but you know I never would.” He said when he was also in the car. It pulled away from the curb and headed to Monica’s house.

“You are so merciful Red.”

“Well of course, if I wasn’t mine would be the supreme race.” He winked.

“Nawh, we’d still get away, us humans are pretty devious when we want to be.”

Red gave a light chuckle “Yes, humans are very dangerous creatures, especially the one that is sitting right next to me.”

Autumn raised a thin eyebrow. “Carry on then, I want to know more about this dangerous human.”

“Well she is seventeen years and eight months old, and going to a party that I’d rather not let her go to, but even though I could easily restrain her, easily lock her in her room and very easily knock her unconscious until the party is over, I am still not strong enough to do it.”

“Why’s that?”

“All she has to do is look at me with her innocent eyes and all my reasoning is gone.”

“Ah so she is a very powerful creature then,” Autumn said smugly.

“The girls a demon.”

“Correction, the girl is a very sexy demon.”

Red studied her for a moment “Beautiful is more like it.” The limo stopped moving as he finished the sentence, they were there, Red could hear the loud music, pulsing inside the house.

“Thank you Jason!” Autumn called through the screen that blocked off the drivers area.

“Anytime darling” Jason called back.

“See, any guy would do anything for you, demon.” Red hissed, leaning forward and placing a gentle kiss on her cheek. Autumn gave him another smug look before opening the door and getting out of the limo.

“I’ll call you when I want to be picked up.” She went to close the door but Red was holding it open, “What?”

“Do me a favour…”

“Be safe. I know Red. “ She said before he could finish his sentence.

“Good girl. I love you.”

“Love you too.” She said quietly as he closed the door and the limo sped away.

Autumn turned to face the two storey house, all the lights were on and balloons were hanging on the black door, she walked up the steps that led to the front door and rang the bell. When nobody answered she rang it again, the door swung open on the third ring and Autumn stepped into the house.

The music was almost ear splitting, the hall alone had seven teenagers in it, chatting merrily and drinking what looked like coke, of course Autumn new better than to assume that. She turned as the door closed and embraced Monica.

Monica was five feet tall and had short black hair with merry brown eyes, she was wearing a pair of dark denim shorts and a white corset that enhanced the size of her breasts. She had high heels on her feet bringing her up to Autumn’s height.

“You can dump your stuff in my bedroom.” She shouted over the music.

“Thanks!” Autumn shouted back. She went to the stairs in the corner of the hall and climbed to the second floor, stepping over a few people on the way, when she reached the landing she went up another set of stairs that took her into Monica’s room, it used to be the loft. The music was a lot quieter in Monica’s sky blue room, but Autumn found that she wasn’t alone. A boy with copper coloured hair was sitting on the bed, she didn’t know him that well, he was new to Darlington, but it did not surprise her that he was at the party, knowing Monica their whole year was at this party.

“Hay, sorry if I’m not suppose to be here but the music was getting a bit much for me.” He said quickly, but Autumn caught the lie in his green eyes.

“What you mean is that you hardly know anybody and felt out of place so you came up here to sulk.” Autumn gave a light smile as she crossed the room and dumped her rucksack onto the bed, she pulled off her leather jacket and hung it on the bed knob.

“How’d you know that?” the boy asked, Autumn turned to face him and his eyes connected with hers, it surprised her that he wasn’t looking anywhere else like most guys would.

“I’m good at reading people.” Was the short answer, the longer one would have gone something like ‘I live with vampires so when their friends have visited there have been a number of threats to my life, the need to look at people and know whether or not they were lying became kind of essential.’

“What’s your name?” The boy asked, “Sorry, I know I should know it and it must sound really ru…”

Autumn held up her hand to stop him from talking “To be honest I don’t know your name either.” She gave a small smile and held out her manicured hand “I’m Autumn Jesse Dark.”

He took her hand “I’m Luke, Luke Francis Releart. “ he lifted her hand and brushed the back of it with his lips.

“Do you want a drink Luke?” Autumn asked.

“Well it is a party.” He flashed a set of perfect white teeth. Autumn tightened her grip on his hand and led him to the ground floor of the house and then into the kitchen, which was filled with a lot more people. She went over to the bar to find Jenny standing behind it handing out drinks. She was wearing a tight strap top with a tutu like skirt and casual flats.

“Two vodka and cokes please bartender.” Autumn gave a light laugh. “Make them strong.”

“Whatever.” Jenny sighed and began mixing the drinks. “Why do I always get bar duty?” She asked taking a mouthful of each drink before putting them on the smooth tabletop for Autumn and Luke to pick up. She thanked Jenny and then led Luke into the large living room where the music was loudest, the room was packed with a rowdy bunch of horny and drunk teenagers swaying to the music, Autumn scanned the crowd and laughed as she recognised the faces of most of them. Each person in the room had a partner, whether it be their girlfriends of boyfriends or simply best mates, some of them were with people who they would never have dreamed of getting with in the land of the meek and sober.

Luke turned and dragged Autumn from the room, across the kitchen and out into the garden where a bunch of people were sitting on the grass smoking joints. “Doesn’t feel right in the living room,” he commented.

“I know what you mean, it’s like you need to be half way to an orgasm to be in there.” Autumn joked.

“Aliens!” a voice came from the direction of the group on the grass. The smell of cannabis was strong in the air, Autumn found two chairs near the door and they both sat down. Luke set his glass on the floor and rummaged in his pocket, he pulled out a small metal cylinder. He pressed a button on the top of it and pointed it towards the stoners.

Autumn felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up to find Monica standing over her, a glass of straight vodka in her hand. “You aren’t drunk, you need more.” Was all she said, she poured half of the glass into the cup in Autumn’s hand turning her once one part vodka two parts coke drink into two parts vodka one part coke.

Autumn picked Luke’s glass off of the floor, which was also half empty, and Monica tipped the rest of the vodka into it. “Oh and later Jenny is going to try and whip up some cocktails and there is spin the bottle at ten, it’s eight now. Be there or be square Autumn.”

“I’ll…” Autumn stopped when she heard cries of fear coming from the stoner’s circle and even a few eruptions of laughter.

“We’re gonna diiiie!” One girl cried out whilst rolling around in hysterics. It didn’t take Autumn long to work out the source of the problem, a red dot was shining on the fence and moving steadily towards the group.

“It’s a sniiiper!” One guy cried out in a high girlish voice.

“No it’s not, it’s darleks!” another said.

“Aliens!!!”

A bark of laughter came from beside Autumn, she looked to find Luke aiming his little metal cylinder in the groups direction, she finally realised what it was, a red laser.

“That’s kind of evil.” Autumn pointed out.

“Pretty dammed funny though.” Luke replied as he stopped the light on a boy’s forehead.

“Oh my god! Oh my god Scot it’s got you! The darlek has you!” A girl shrieked and then crumpled with laughter.

Autumn let out a small giggle “True, but still evil.”

Luke took his finger off of the button and put the laser back in his pocket, he picked up his drink and downed it like water. He locked eyes with Autumn who raised her glass to her lips and did the same.

“Big drinker I see?” Luke approved.

“Bigger than you.”

“Want to prove that?”

“Your on.” She smirked and headed back into the kitchen, she returned with four shot glasses. She handed two of them to Luke. “Ready?”

“Always.” He lifted his chin and tipped the contents of both of them into his mouth, then dropped his gaze to Autumn, she grinned and drank both of her shots, ignoring the thick, hot liquid that stung her throat.

She took a deep breath “Again?”

Drumming? Why was there drumming? Where was she? Some sort of concert? She winced. It was defiantly loud enough to be a concert. It hurt her head, and rattled her bones. Autumn slowly opened her eyes, she groaned as the pain in her head sharpened. A sharp memory flashed through her mind, she remembered entering Monica’s house; she remembered meeting a boy, Luke? And aliens, there was something about aliens.

Autumn tried to roll onto her side but found that she was being held in place by a pair of strong arms. Strong male arms. Shit. She took a quick looked down at her body and let out a low sigh of relief, she was wearing a pair of shorts and a baggy t-shirt. Not being naked was a good sign, the second good sign was that when she rubbed her leg against the legs of the body beside her she could feel denim, the guy she was with wasn’t naked either.

A low groan echoed in her ear, causing another sharp pain, how much had she drunk? Enough to not remember anything past Aliens. The arms around her loosened and she rolled free to find herself lying in Monica’s bed next to an extremely gorgeous, and topless, guy.

He had chin length curly brown hair and bright blue eyes, he had high cheek bones and a thin jaw line with a sprinkling of stubble, his chest was neatly defined and supporting a six-pack, no wonder he had been able to hold her down so easily. The “Just got up” look fitted him perfectly; a name swam into Autumn’s mind, Dustin?

She smiled sweetly when his eyes were fully open; he ran a strong, tanned hand through his already messy brown hair. “Autumn Jesse Dark.” He smiled back.

“Dustin Gully. Don’t you look dashing.” Autumn pouted, running her eyes over his topless chest again.

“Never expected to wake up next to you.” He said, brushing off her compliment. “Wish I could remember how I ended up here though.”

A few images flashed through Autumn’s mind, “Spin the bottle.”

“I got lucky,” he winked.

So did I “And if I remember rightly…” Autumn trailed off and rolled to the side of the bed, she peeked over the edge and sure enough Luke was curled on the floor an empty cocktail glass beside him, the tip of his thumb grazed his lips. She felt a warm body press against her back and Dustin’s brown locks brush her cheek.

“Aw isn’t he just precious.” Dustin cooed, reaching down and squeezing Luke’s cheek, Luke jumped and sat up.

“You *****!” he cried before holding his head and collapsing again. “This is your fault Dark.” He moaned.

“Shouldn’t have been so stubborn should you Luke?” Autumn grinned, pushing herself into a seated position on the edge of the bed. Third good sign, she was still wearing a bra.

“Excuse me but I won”

“Prove it.”

“I didn’t end up lying in bed looking as if I was trying to scoop some ones tonsils out with my tongue!” Luke shot at her.

“I don’t need to be drunk to do that, have you seen the boy?” Autumn gestured towards Dustin who was still lying on the bed, a faint blush rose to his cheeks.

“I find that morally offensive. If that’s all it takes to get you into bed then why not choose me?” Luke joked.

“Do you even know what morally offensive means?”

“No. But the point still stands.”

Autumn slipped off the bed “Maybe I’ll do you at the next party.” She said over her shoulder as she headed to her overnight bag that was in the corner.

Luke came up behind her “Did you do him?” he hissed.

“Jealous?” Autumn asked as she stooped to rummage through the bag.

“No, just needed to know how hard I’m going to have to try.” He gave a small laugh then “You didn’t answer my question though.”

Autumn stood up and turned to face him, clutching a pair of jeans, a black button up shirt and a cosmetics bag, to find Luke standing a few inches in front of her. “No Luke I did not screw him.” She whispered. Then pushed gently past him and headed towards the stairs, Dustin was still on the bed, apparently asleep.

“You getting ready to go already?” Luke asked.

“Yeah, Red will be worried, it hurts him enough to let me stay away for the night” Autumn called back as she descended to the landing, where a few boys were curled up, fast asleep. She glanced at the clock above the bathroom door, it was 11 am. She slipped past the bunch of unconscious teenagers and went into the bathroom, where she found Jenny and Monica asleep in the bath.

She crept to the edge of the bath and locked her hand around the cold silver showerhead; she flicked on the cold water and held it over the girls. Monica was the first to wake up, with an ear splitting shriek that almost made Autumn drop the shower and clutch her head.

“Autumn you cow!” Jenny cried,

“Get out I need to get changed” Autumn sighed whilst replacing the shower on it’s silver stand and helping Monica out of the bath.

“Why are we in the bath?” Jenny asked as if she had only just realised where they were.

“Because you got completely rat arsed last night.” Autumn explained, pulling Jenny out. She rubbed her neck and stretched her arms above her head.

“Indeed I did.” Jenny mused “Now I remember why I always volunteer to be bar tender”

“Out.” Autumn snapped.

“We’re going.” Monica shot back, as she stumbled out of the bathroom with Jenny. Autumn closed, and locked, the door behind them and let out a long breath. Her head was still ringing from Monica’s shriek.

She glanced in the mirror, good sign number four her makeup wasn’t smudged badly and the bed head look suited her, she hadn’t looked like an idiot in front of Dustin. She opened her cosmetics bag and pulled out a face-cleansing wipe.

She had just finished wiping her makeup off when she heard Monica shouting. “Is that a hedgehog!?”

“Yeah, noooo.” Came the reply, just as loud.

“Where did you find a hedgehog?”

“What hedgehog?”

“Harry are you still stoned?”

“I gots a hedgehog.”

Autumn gave a light chuckle and started getting dressed, trying to listen to the conversation that had dropped in volume, she heard a few words like “Idiot” “Stoned” and the word “hedgehog” was repeated a couple more times but other than that the conversation was lost as the rest of the house started to wake up.

Autumn left the bathroom dressed in a pair of dark blue bootleg jeans and a black button up shirt with the top button undone, she had a white gold chain around her neck with a white gold cross hanging from it, nothing to do with religion it was a private joke between herself and Red, the landing was clear of all bodies and the house was quite, either because the party goers had all left or collapsed down stairs, the latter being the more likely.

Autumn ascended the stairs to the loft bedroom and found that Luke was sitting on the bed next to Dustin, there was a can of mousse, Monica’s, in his hand and he was spraying it onto Dustin’s palm. She could see exactly what he was intending to do.

“That never works you know?” Autumn said casually as she crossed the room to pack her bag.

“Shut up” Luke hissed.

“Why are you doing it Luke?” Autumn asked without turning around.

“What can I say? I like taking advantage of the dead.” Luke shrugged, setting the can aside. Autumn got to her feet and retrieved her coat from a corner of the bedroom; she couldn’t remember how it had gotten there, something about a teddy fashion show came to mind and sure enough when she lifted the coat a green teddy bear fell out.

Autumn straightened up just as a muffled thwack came from the direction of the bed, then a thump as someone hit the floor; she turned around casually and glanced in the direction of the bed. Luke was lying on the floor white mousse all over his face and Dustin was sitting up examining his white sticky hand.

“Dustin I don’t think it is sanitary to spray on peoples faces.”

“He loved it,” Dustin smirked, running his moussed up hand through his hair messing it up so it was sticking out in every direction.

“Looking good.” Autumn commented,

“Likewise.” Dustin shot back.

“Can someone help me up?” a whine came from Luke’s direction. Autumn walked towards Luke, a chuckle poised on her full lips. She grasped Luke’s wrist and pulled him to his feet, he gave a small smile and wiped the mousse off of his face with the back of his hand, revealing flushed cheeks.

Autumn let go of his wrist and pulled a small silver Motorola out of her bag, she flipped it up and dialled Red’s number. She pressed the cold case of the phone against her ear and waited for him to answer.

“Autumn.” His voice was relieved, as it always was when he spoke to her after she had been away from home all night.

“Hay, you want to come pick me?”

“Sure thing beautiful.” He said smoothly then disconnected, it was most likely that he was already out of the door. She felt a hand on her shoulder and span around, Dustin was standing a few inches away from her, in all his topless glory. Autumn couldn’t help but think.

“You going already?” he asked, his voice slightly hurt, a car beeped it’s horn from outside the house.

“No I’m going now.” she smirked.

“What is your dad some sort of race car driver?”

“Well he isn’t my dad for a start.”

“Is he a race car driver?”

“No, he just…drives fast.” Autumn shrugged, grabbing her bag. She headed towards the stairs but Dustin stood in front of her.

“Wait, don’t I get a hug?” he asked. Autumn shrugged and put her arms around his neck, he pulled her against him and kissed her forehead, she looked up at him and gave him a quick peck on the lips before slipping past him and going down the stairs.

“My number’s on your phone.” He called after her.

Autumn went into the living room and stepped over about five people from her college before she reached Monica, she gave Monica a hug and thanked her for the invite then walked back to the hall and out of the front door.

A silver Mercedes was waiting at the end of the front garden, Red was in the drivers seat. Autumn slipped in next to him and he started the car, in mere seconds they were pulling away from the curb and heading home.

“Have fun?” Red asked as he inhaled.

“Lots.”

“Meet a boy?”

“How’d you know?” Autumn asked sarcastically, she knew that Dustin’s scent would be all over her.

“What’s his name?”

“Dustin Gully.”

“Is he cute?”

“Extremely"

“Did you have sex with him?”

“No.”

Red laughed, as he took a sharp left, almost turning the car in full circle then hit the accelerator, they were speeding along a small deserted road at almost one hundred miles an hour. Not that it bothered Autumn, she was too used to Red’s driving. They didn’t speak again until Red had stopped the car outside their house.

“Autumn I want you to go straight up to your room when we get in.” his face was serious,

“Why?”

“Hanson’s here, and he’s brought a friend.”

Autumn usually liked receiving the news that Red’s best vampire buddy Hanson had shown up, seeing as he had known her since she was five and wouldn’t hurt her, but the fact that he had brought a friend, not so much.

When you are the only human living in a vampire world things tend to get out of hand unless you know that you can trust said vampires, she knew she could trust Emelae, she knew she could trust Red, heck she could even trust Hanson, Dom, Lisa and Kyle, but anyone new was bad news.

Autumn walked into the house and ran straight up the stairs to her room without looking back at Red, she hoped that Hanson would come up and see her, she hadn’t seen him for at least three months.

She threw herself onto the black and green bean bags and let out a long sigh of relief, it was always good to be home. Autumn found that once lying down she didn’t want to get up again, the beanbags were so soft and she was in an extremely comfortable position, sleep sounded like the best idea.

Personally this is my favourite part so far.

Part Three.

Another roar erupted from the beast beneath him as it tore up the road, weaving around other vehicles; at 140 miles an hour, he was flying. His midnight blue coat rippled behind him making him look like a bat. “From hell” he joked with himself as he leant dangerously to his right, his knee scraping the floor as he spun around a corner. He kicked off from the ground and racked up some more power before speeding off down a side road. The bike’s speed never dipped below 80.

Signposts sped past him as white blurs; they consisted of the name of the town “Creeds” and a number of miles, the number was decreasing rapidly as the minutes ticked by. He pushed the bike faster, so he’d have to concentrate on the road. He couldn’t afford to be thinking about what he was doing, where he was going. If what he was doing was the biggest mistake of his life, leaving was your biggest mistake. Was his last thought before he pushed the bike towards 180 and was forced to concentrate on the sharp turns of the country road.

It wasn’t long before the first couple of houses were appearing, hurtling towards him through the dark night. He was forced to slow down, or risk being chased by the police. Then he would never be able to return. He dropped his speed to just over 50.

It wasn’t long before a dark shadow scarred the starry deep blue sky, looming above the town like some sort of monster. It was The Tower, home. A warm feeling flooded the pit of Jesse’s stomach at the sight of the monster, something he couldn’t describe, and something he hadn’t felt in seventeen years.

He stopped the bike at the base of the stone steps and dismounted it slowly, the windows of The Tower were dark, not that that bothered him, they usually were. As he climbed the steps the wind trailed fingers through his soot coloured hair. Which, after the trip on the bike, felt extremely pleasant.

He approached the heavy front door and pulled a key out from under his shirt where it had hung on a thick metal thread. He’d never taken it off. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, the hinges squealing in protest. He frowned, it was unlike Emelae to have let the hinges get dirty.

He entered the dark foyer and peered around, the table that ran around the base of the stairs held none of the usual clutter, as he approached he realised how dusty it was. Extremely unlike Red to not have his things strewn across it.

Jesse inhaled deeply, he detected Red and Emelae’s scent, there was even a hint of human mingling with it, so she was still with them. He then realised that the scent’s were extremely old. Days old? No. Months? He inhaled again and a small gasp escaped his pale lips. Years. The Tower had been empty for years.

Jesse ran to the stairs and took them two at a time until he reached his old room, it was completely empty, he could not find any warm feelings in The Tower, this wasn’t home. He was alone, and it made his silent heart ache, where as moments before it had been throbbing with anticipation and excitement.

“Where are you?” he whispered, leaning weakly against the wall and sliding down it until he was seated on the floor, his knees drawn up to his chin. He stroked the dusty floor with his long pale fingers, leaving wispy patterns in the thick dust. He looked up at the bay windows and noticed a white envelope on the window seat.

He dragged himself to his feet and crossed the room in under half a second, it took him less than that to rip open the envelope and read it’s contents.

Jesse
If you are reading this it means you have returned, I won’t know this yet but you cannot imagine how happy I will be! Please do not stop searching for us Jesse. We are currently living in Darlington, I can not stress how important it would be to me if you came to us, we can be a family Jesse, I’ve missed you so much.

But I suppose it is only fair to warn you that the human child will still be living with us, please do not be angry. We named her Autumn Jesse Dark, after you. She reminds me of you Jesse, she is beautiful. Please come and find us.
Emelae
X

Jesse felt tears sting his eyes, he could hear Emelae speaking the words she had wrote, and that just made him miss her even more. He spun on his heel and left the room, it took him less than two seconds to get back to his motorcycle. He mounted it and kicked off, throwing the bike into gear and speeding away through the night. He quickly settled into the rhythm of the beast beneath him and it wasn’t long until he was on the motorway, doing near on 150 miles per hour.

He barely heard his mobile ringing over the roar of the bike, he pulled it out of the back pocket of his leather trousers, and he held it to his ear and carried on driving at the same pace, with one hand on the handlebars.

“Yes?,”

“Where are you?” came a thick female voice, worry evident.

“This isn’t the best time Rexene.” Jesse hissed, dodging around a lorry.

“Slow down a bit and it will be” It did not surprise Jesse that Rexene knew he was on his bike and way over the speed limit.

“I can’t I need to get somewhere.”

“Where are you going Jesse?”

“Home.”

“What home? You never mentioned that.” Rexene sounded shocked, Jesse had joined Rexene and her coven one year after leaving Red and Emelae, he had never told them about his past, and if they asked he had simply said ‘there isn’t one’ and left it at that. The day before he had spent a lot of time thinking about Red and Emelae, which he did a lot, and as the sun set he had jumped on his bike and left the coven’s lair without telling the others where he was going.

“You would never understand Rexene.” Jesse whispered.

“No, I don’t. But where ever you are going let us know when you get there, we worry about you Jesse.”

“I will.” He hung up and slipped the phone back into his pocket, he leant over the handle bars and gave the bike more power, the first sign for Darlington whipped past and his stomach clenched, that letter had been written 17 years ago, would Emelae still feel the same way? Red hadn’t been mentioned in the letter. Did he hate him?

Jesse forced the bike to go faster, unable to dwell on these thoughts any longer; he zipped around a mini and smiled as the driver swore loudly, in fact now that he was listening a lot of the other drivers were swearing at him. He raised his hand and gave the finger to the drivers behind but he doubted they could see it, he was probably moving too fast.

He reached the edge of Darlington just as the sun was rising, he picked up their scent straight away, blowing towards him on a light eastward breeze, it was mingled with hundreds of other scents but Jesse could have probably picked it out of thousands if he’d needed to.

He sped through the town unable to quite stick to the appropriate speed limit, their scent was constantly getting stronger and he couldn’t help but shake with excitement, and fear. It took him under ten minutes to reach the point where the smell was the strongest, outside a two storey white house, it looked extremely big.

He dismounted his bike and walked cautiously up the path, he could smell Red and Emelae, but he could also smell the human. He was not looking forward to meeting her, seeing as she was the reason he had left.

He knocked on the door, holding his breath; he could hear someone moving behind it, it seemed to take another seventeen years for the handle to turn. When the door finally swung open he found that his lips wouldn’t move to form the words that would ask for Red or Emelae.

“Hello. It’s a bit early to be selling me insurance isn’t it?” the girl asked, ha funny, Jesse wanted to laugh but his body wouldn’t respond, this girl was stunning. He inhaled and couldn’t believe that this girl was the human Red had rescued, this was Autumn Jesse Dark, standing timidly in the doorway in a pair of baggy grey tracksuit bottoms and a sports bra with a faint flush tinting her perfect cheeks. Jesse wanted to move his eyes away from her face so he could properly look at the rest of her, but she was just…

“Shit” she whispered, “You’re a vampire aren’t you?”

Jesse nodded, was she afraid of him? Was there fear in her sapphire eyes? No it was merely caution. She peered over his shoulder at something in the distance.

“You better come inside, the suns rising, I’ll get Red for you.” She said taking a step back and holding the door open for him.

Red? Oh that was the reason that he was here, to see Red. Jesse took a few steps forward, his hand brushed Autumn’s stomach and he felt her tense, she quickly moved away from him and closed the door. Then went to the base of the stairs, Jesse stared after her, unable to look around.

“Red, Emelae, there is someone here for you,” she called.

Emelae appeared at the top of the stairs as Autumn walked into a room to his right, finally he could look elsewhere, he could look at Emelae. He fixed his gaze on her shocked face just as the little colour she had drained out of it. She reached the bottom of the stairs in seconds and ran towards him.

“Am I hallucinating?” she asked.

Jesse shook his head and held his arms wide, Emelae flew into them hugging him against her, she kissed his forehead and it felt as if she would never let go, it felt amazingly good to be in her arms again. It felt like home.

“Jesse,” she kept saying, over and over again, her voice getting a tad quieter each time. She finally let go and took a step back, holding his shoulders so she could get a proper look at him. Her face was streaked with tear trails.

Red’s head suddenly appeared over her shoulder, Jesse hadn’t heard him enter the room and gave a small gasp of surprise. His stomach clenched as Red started to laugh, Emelae took a step to the side and Red stumbled forward taking one of Jesse’s hands in both of his.

“What have you done to your hair boy?” Red asked, still laughing.

“What have you done to your life?” Jesse shot back. Staring around the room, finding the face that he knew was there, he locked eyes with Autumn.

“Touché” Red murmured, following Jesse’s gaze. “Autumn, this is Jesse Dark.” Red clapped a hand on the boys shoulder “I turned him. Jesse, this is Autumn Jesse Dark. I saved her.”

“Aren’t you the regular hero.” Autumn hissed, not taking her eyes off of Jesse, he was good looking, she could give him that. His soot coloured hair was cut into uneven layers and fell rather haphazardly around his face, he had a pure white side fringe that fell over one of his black eyes, his face was sharp but boyish, there was something stubborn about the way he held himself. He was dressed in leather trousers that were ripped at the knees, a black tight shirt and a long blue coat, a black studded dog collar hugged his neck.

“Good old Red aye?” he grinned and looked away from her just as Red pulled him into a suffocating bear hug. He hugged him back, squeezing him tight. Of course Red held on tighter. They finally let go of each other and both of them took a step back.

“You do look rather ridiculous though.” Red gave a small frown.

“I look fine.” Jesse growled, “Don’t I look fine?” he spun around so that he faced Autumn and held his arms out.

“Ten out of ten.” She winked, then strode across the hall and took tiny, delicate steps up the stairs, Jesse watched her go, unable to take his eyes off of her. Something hard hit his neck as soon as she was gone and he was slammed against the wall. He reached up and took Red’s wrist in his hands, trying to pull him away. Of course he was too strong, Jesse looked up into Red’s eyes.

“You listen to me, you lay one finger on Autumn and I will crush you.” Red hissed.

“Thought you were glad to have me back.” Jesse growled.

“I am, but I saw the way you looked at her.”

“I wouldn’t hurt her.” Jesse sounded disgusted.

“I didn’t say you were going to,” Red’s eyes were blazing, and Jesse gasped as he realized what Red was saying.

“I wasn’t thinking…” the hand on his throat tightened “So what if I was? It’s okay for other mutts to get their hands on her but…”

“They aren’t vampires Jesse, you realise that if you touch her you could kill her, a simple slip. That’s all it takes”

“So you don’t go near her?” Jesse didn’t really understand why he was even arguing about this, like it really mattered? Even if he was right, once a teenager always a teenager, Red had once said.

“I have learned to live with her, you have been with our kind for seventeen years, you could be as heavy handed as you liked there.”

“I won’t touch her.” Jesse finally gave in, and Red let go, he turned to face Emelae who had been sitting on the bottom step watching the confrontation with curious eyes. “We still have Jesse’s stuff don’t we?” Red asked her, as if nothing had happened.

“It’s all set up in the room at the very end of the pink corridor.” Emelae smiled, Jesse gave her a confused look “I always knew you would come back one day.”

“Thank you” Jesse gave a lopsided smile “I’m afraid I don’t know where the pink corridor is.”

“Go to the top of the stairs and turn right.” Emelae said gently. Apparently trying to make up for Red’s actions, as was her nature. Jesse walked to the stairs and ran his hand over Emelae’s shoulder giving it a small squeeze of affection.

He proceeded up the stairs and turned into the pink corridor, lined with black doors, he was heading to the one at the very end when a strong, sweet scent caught his attention. He stopped outside the third black door and moved closer to it, breathing in Autumn’s scent, he pressed his cheek against the door and listened to her slow, shallow breathing.

He took the doorknob and gently turned it then pushed the door open, he silently entered the room. It was extremely dark and a fringe of light was peeking through the curtains, he used the small amount to adjust his eyes to the dark. Autumn was in her bed, the black covers pulled up around her waist. She was lying on her back with her cheek pressed against her pillow she had one hand in front of her face, the other on her neck clutching the silver cross that she wore. His heart softened at the sight.

He walked around the room, padding gently on silent feet, a soft voice made him jump “Ever heard of personal space?” Jesse span around, Autumn was sitting up in her bed, a delicate hand pressed to her forehead.

“I’m sorry if I woke you.” Jesse whispered, backing up towards the door.

Autumn shook her head “I don’t really sleep anyway, and if I do it is extremely lightly.”

“Your hearing is good?” he asked curiously.

“Almost as good as yours, for instance I heard the handle turn.” He could just make out her smug smile.

He nodded “That is impressive. You have acquired vampire skills?”

“No, I’m perfectly human, I have just learnt to hear and see things that others don’t” She waved her hand and let it fall to the bed.

“Clever.” He acknowledged.

“I have to be”

“It is strange; you don’t seem at all surprised by the fact that I’m here.”

“Admittedly it isn’t every day I wake up to find a guy sneaking around my bedroom but no it did not surprise me.” She laid back, propping herself up on her elbows.

“It must seem bad to you, I have only just arrived and I’m already in your bedroom.” Jesse smirked.

“Well I do seem to have that effect on people.” Autumn gave a small yawn, which ruined the quirky remark ever so slightly.

“I’m sorry, I’m keeping you from your sleep.” Jesse sighed and began to back out of the room, but before he went he had one last thing to say “Please could you not mention this to Red?”

“He already knows.”

“Yes, but maybe it is best if we don’t bring the subject up.”

“You can understand why he would be worried can’t you?” Autumn asked, turning her body so that she faced Jesse.

For a moment Jesse thought that Autumn must have heard the confrontation between himself and Red, obviously that couldn’t have happened, he was surprised to realise that she must know Red extremely well. He didn’t say anything else to Autumn, just backed slowly out of her room and continued down the corridor to his own.

He entered the room and immediately felt warmed, it was so like his had been 17 years before, with it’s silver walls and black metal framed bed. Dark gothic wardrobe, silver chandelier and an old wooden rocking chair, which was set next to the bed.

Jesse went to the familiar chair and sat in it, resting his head against the firm wooden back, he hated the way that Autumn Jesse Dark seemed to hold a certain amount of power within both the vampire world and the human one, he could feel her warm, alluring aurora streaming off of her body when he was near her and it just drew him in, he was certain that he was not the only male that had ever felt it. For it wasn’t just her body that was so attractive, the way she spoke seemed, at times, so well educated, he could tell that she would have an answer for everything, the worst thing was that Red had deemed her completely off limits, which just made her more desirable.

But Jesse knew that it would be hard for him to go against Red, for he owed him too much. Regal Ebony Dark had always been like a father to Jesse, besides to even consider it Autumn would have to feel the same way, and he doubted that she often fell for any of the guys in her life, he stopped himself there, how could he really be thinking about the human in such a way? Did he seriously fancy her? School boy crush he mocked himself.

Jesse shrugged out of his coat and got to his feet, suddenly thirsty, and walked out of his room and along the corridor; he paused outside Autumn’s room but after a moment forced himself to carry on walking. When he reached the stairs he could smell something cooking, he followed the heavy aroma to a very bright and clean silver and black kitchen where Emelae was standing at a stove mixing some sort of human food concoction.

“Bit early for the pet to be feeding isn’t it?” Jesse asked.

Emelae turned to him, a scowl on her kind face “Be nice Jesse.”

He held up his hands “You know I’m only messing about.”

“What would she do if she heard you speak of her in such a way?” Emelae pointed her wooden spoon at him.

How threatening “My best guess is that I’d receive a slap and a few harsh words, delivered in such a way that I will be powerless to retaliate.”

“You read people well.” Emelae nodded and turned back to her mystic pot of human goodies. They stood in silence for a while, both of them milling over their own thoughts, it was a sweet comfortable silence that could have gone on forever.

“So why are you cooking?” Jesse asked.

“I enjoy it, plus Autumn will be awake soon.”

“She only went to bed an hour ago.”

“She only sleeps hours at a time.” Emelae shrugged. “And after she wakes up she will be awake for the rest of the day now.”

Jesse pushed himself off of the counter and covered the distance between himself and Emelae in seconds. He wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head on her shoulder. “I’ve missed you so much.” He whispered.

“If you are after blood you will have to wait until Red gets back from hunting.”

He pulled away and sat on the counter beside the stove “Hunting? Humans?” Jesse asked hopefully, his throat was beginning to ache.

“No, Deer and fox..”

“Stray cats, dogs, gerbils.” Jesse counted the animals off on his fingers as he said their names.

“Our existence has not become that pathetic.” Emelae snapped.

“Sheep, goats, chickens.” Jesse carried on.

“I find that he’s rather partial to the occasional scruffy, childish and down right annoying vampire” a soft, humoured voice came from the doorway. Jesse looked up to find Autumn standing there, her hair was damp and a silk dressing gown was hanging off of her thin frame and pulled in tightly at her waist.

“I prefer pretty little blonde humans.” He said, trying to force some sort of menace into his eyes and failing miserably when he couldn’t keep his eyes from straying over her body.

Autumn pretended to be thoughtful as she walked to the kitchen table and sat down in one of the silver coloured chairs. “A lot of the human boys I come across say that as well”

Jesse pulled a childish face “I suppose you know a lot of boys then?”

“Do you not know a lot of girls?” Autumn answered him with her own question.

“Many.” Jesse replied.

“What is the name of your latest squeeze then?”

He tapped his nose and turned to look at what Emelae was poking with her spoon. Truthfully he had been with only one girl during his 17 years away, he hadn’t loved her, it had been more like lust. She had been turned as a 15 year old model and her looks were amazing, her personality was bleak. The relationship had lasted just a month, before and after that he had just had random flings with girls from other covens, even a few guys.

“So what’s for breakfast?” Autumn asked.

“Mangled sick.” Jesse snorted.

“Scrambled eggs” Emelae scowled. Spooning the eggs onto a plate and setting them on the table in front of Autumn. Along with a knife and a fork, Autumn picked up her fork and stabbed the eggs, giving it a small twist and lifting up a small amount of the egg, she took a delicate bite and stabbed the egg again to repeat the process. Jesse was watching her intently. She looked up and caught his eyes for a second before looking back down. He gave a small smirk and looked up as Red entered the room, wearing an ankle length trench coat.

He gave Jesse a stern look before leaning down to give Autumn a swift kiss on the cheek. He straightened up and went to Emelae, pulling her against him and kissing her lips. She slipped her hands into the trench coat and pulled out two large vials of crimson liquid from one of the many pockets. She pulled away running her hand across his chest and pouring the vials into wine glasses. He hovered over her shoulder and gently kissed her neck. She cocked her head slightly, exposing more of her throat for him to nip and kiss. Jesse took a wine glass from Emelae’s hand as Red span her around and pinned her against the counter.

He sat opposite Autumn and sipped the red liquid from his glass, he winced slightly as the sharp taste of deer blood hit his tongue. It quenched his first slightly, but not as much as human blood would have. He sighed and looked at Autumn over his glass, “Do you really think I’m scruffy?”

Autumn gave a small laugh and set her fork on the side of her empty plate, she laced her fingers and leant closer to Jesse as a small groan came from the direction of Red and Emelae. “Yes.”

“Why?”

“You are wearing ripped trousers and your hair is a mess.”

“I don’t usually dress like this.” He frowned.

“First impressions are important.” She smirked,

“Did I not give you a good first impression?” Jesse took another gulp of blood and fixed Autumn with a soft gaze.

“No.” she threw an intense look back at him and pursed her lips. He knew what she was trying to convey, he hadn’t been around for twelve hours and he had already ended up in her bedroom and ogled at her the tiniest bit, to her he was just like any other guy.

Jesse dropped his gaze, unable to think of a come back, at least not one he could say with Red in the room. He drained his glass and got up to set it on the side, then pretended to be busy washing it. His thirst still wasn’t satisfied, and his throat was aching. A thin hand set a plate in the sink and her sweet scent brushed his nose sending a wave of venom into his mouth. He gritted his teeth and slowly turned, Autumn was standing centimetres in front of him, her light aroma drifting off of her damp hair.

He had left the kitchen in under two seconds, and got to his room in less than that time he sat in his rocking chair, breathing heavily. His thoughts were whirring as he remembered imagining running his lips along her glorious neck and… shit, he got to his feet and pulled on his coat.

He left his room and ran down the stairs, where Red shouted after him, and out onto the street where he jumped onto his motorbike and sped away. It had taken him under a minute to get out.

He had been kidding himself, thinking he could stay in a house with a human and drink animal blood. How did Red manage to stay sane when constantly surrounded by the thirst and her. Maybe the fact that he had raised her helped but how could he only drink animal blood, usually a glass of human blood would satisfy Jesse for half a day, but the animal blood made him want more and left a sour taste in his mouth. For 17 years he had lived with his own kind, and it had turned him into a monster.

Just 10 minutes later he had to stop, he was shaking too much; he was in an empty run down street where everyone was asleep at five am. He fell to his knees and rested his head in his hands, he couldn’t return home after that. He slowly stood up having realised what he had to do and pulled his mobile out of his pocket, he was about to dial Rexene when a light breeze brushed his hair he looked around to find a thin, teenage boy stumbling down the road, he’d apparently just had an extremely good night out.

The sandy haired boy came to a stop a few feet from Jesse “Hay, dude, you know where…” Jesse was suddenly standing in front of the boy, his hand around the back of the boy’s neck, shit, he lowered his head. “Dude what are you doing?” he breathed in the boys scent and a trail of venom trickled out of the corner of his mouth. He pressed his lips to the smooth skin of the boy’s throat.....

Something hard hit the side of Jesse’s head sending him flying across the pavement and crashing into a set of stairs. He sat up to find Red holding the head of the sandy haired boy, he was checking the boys neck. “Go straight home.” Red told him. Then let the boy go. Red turned and approached Jesse, his eyes were black his jaw clenched. He took the front of Jesse’s shirt and punched his stomach.

“What were you thinking boy?” Red growled, letting Jesse fall to the ground, clutching his stomach. That was the problem with vampire’s they hit really hard. Jesse stumbled to his feet and squared his shoulders. Red pulled back his arm and punched the side of Jesse’s head, he stumbled slightly but stayed standing.

“Red.” Jesse held up his hand as Red threw another punch but Jesse caught his fist, it was then that Red realised that tears were streaming Jesse’s face. Jesse let go of Red’s fist and sank to the floor. “I’m sorry”

“What were you thinking?”

“I’m a monster.” Jesse shook his head.

“Jesse.” Red’s voice softened, he crouched next to Jesse and put his arm around him. The young vampire shrank away.

“I can’t control it.” Jesse murmured.

“Bullshit.”

“I’m an animal Red, humans are my prey and I feed on them. It’s all I know.”

“That’s how you’ve spent 17 years of your life. But not anymore Jess, I’m here now.”

“But I hate them. I hate them and now you’re protecting them from me. You’re the good guy here Red, you’ve always been the hero and I’ve always looked up to you. And after that I’ll understand if you don’t want me back in your home.”

“I want you to come home Jesse,”

“I can’t live on animal blood.”

“I’m not letting you run off. The first time was a mistake that I said I would never make again.” Jesse looked up at Red.

“Why did you let me go?” he asked.

“You needed to grow up. When you stood there arguing with me on that day I could see the child in your eyes, I babied you too much.”

“And now I’m better off I suppose? A grown up irresponsible vampire.” Jesse spat.

“You can learn to live with it. If you want it enough.” Red cut off the conversation and pulled Jesse to his feet then walked him to his motorbike. “Get on the bike, and go for a drive. I’ll see you later Jesse.”

Jesse wiped his eyes and mounted the bike. “I’ll be home soon Red.”

He kicked his bike to life and sped off, heading for the edge of the town, leaving everything behind him. It wasn’t long before he was on the motorway, doing more than 180, it didn’t matter what Red said he couldn’t do it, not that he had even tried just like him to give it up, he veered off of the motorway down a small road, his knee scraping along the floor, when he straightened the bike again his knee was bleeding but it soon healed.

The road was thin and full of sharp curves, there was a deep cavern to his right and a hill to his left the right of the road was protected by a thin wooden barrier, so at 180 miles an hour he had to concentrate hard to get around the bends, it felt good to have the wind ripping at his hair and pulling at his scruffy clothes. It felt like he was running away again, it felt safe, he was too used to running. A thought occurred to him, he could run, Red didn’t have his number and he was moving too fast for his scent to settle, he could…

Jesse suddenly lost control of the bike; it veered dangerously to the right and shot through the barrier. For a moment it felt like he was flying, but his bike was hurtling towards the rocky ground, when it hit the tires burst and the bike fell to it’s side and Jesse was thrown off, he tried to grab onto something to stop his descent but the rocks came loose and the plants had little strength. He was rolling over and over and the ground was slashing at his skin. He ended up in a bloody heap at the bottom of the cavern, he was thirsty, the sun was beating down and the air was a lot hotter than it had been when he had drove out. His whole body hurt.

He got shakily to his feet and looked around for his bike, of course it was broken, he didn’t bother to pick it up, he didn’t have much strength as it was. He looked up at the steep incline in front of him and his throat sent a spasm of pain through his body. He’d only had a glass of animal blood he needed something else. He sat in the shade of a small tree, and pulled out his mobile. He dialled a number and put it to his ear.

“Jesse!”

“Rexene.” Jesse sighed, and leant back against the tree.

“What’s wrong?”

“I need blood.”

“Isn’t there enough where you are?” she laughed.

“Rexene I’m currently at the bottom of a cavern, just outside Darlington, the sun is hot, I am cut and bleeding, so no there isn’t enough blood.” Even when he was in pain he could put sarcasm into his voice.

“Shit, jeez Jess I let you out of my sight for less than a day and you get yourself in trouble. You were on your bike weren’t you?”

“Just bring me enough blood to last me the rest of this month,”

“So you are still going home?”

“Yes. Look Rex, I’m about an hour outside of Darlington, you should smell my blood if you come along the motorway”

“I’ll be there within the hour Jess” Rexene disconnected.

Jesse hugged his stomach as another spasm of pain hit him, he gritted his teeth and clenched his fists against his sides, the next hour would be the longest one in his life.

Rexene Freeze was used to being gawked at, and she liked the feel of it. She wore clothes to emphasize her curves, for example, today she wore a tight red corset and tight black trousers. Her hair was clipped up and curled strands fell from either side of her head. She had stopped her white, topless Porsche at a set of lights and she could feel the guys in the truck next to her ogling at her.

She didn’t feel like flirting, she was just outside Darlington and she could smell Jesse’s blood on the wind, when the lights changed she hit the accelerator and spun the car down a small, narrow road. The car was too wide for her to be able to drive too fast, another wash of his scent rushed over her and she stopped the car. She felt as if she needed to be faster, it had taken her 45 minutes to collect enough blood and get this far and she knew Jesse had been suffering the whole time.

She cared about the kid like he was her younger brother, there had never been anything intimate between them, and they had always been best mates. She jumped out of the car taking a duffel bag off of the passenger seat and ran down the road; she reached a brake in the barrier in seconds and looked down the steep incline. She could see Jesse at the bottom; he was curled into a ball under a small tree.

She began to run down the slope, slipping and sliding on the treacherous path. She landed at the bottom and broke into a run. She slid to a stop in front of Jesse and ran her cool hand over his hot face, “Shit Jess,” she whispered. Jesse opened his eyes and slowly pushed himself into a seated position he leant heavily against the tree.

“Bring back any memories?” he asked in a husky voice. He was evidently trying to cover up how bad he actually was. But Rexene could see his hunger in his eyes. The real torture, it was an indescribable feeling, the hunger a vampire had to go through.

Rexene thought for a moment “This is how we met.” She pulled a blood bag out of the duffel bag and pushed it towards Jesse, he picked it up and bit into it, greedily pouring the sweet blood down his throat. He closed his eyes as the relief flooded him and his deeper wounds healed.

When he had finished the bag he threw the empty casing aside and got to his feet, he pulled Rexene into a hug, lifting her off of the ground. “What would I do without you?” he asked her.

“You’d be dead.” She pulled away and held the boy at arms length “Are you coming back with me?”

Jesse shook his head “I have to go home,”

“Autumn” Emelae shouted up the stairs “Someone here for you.”

Autumn appeared at the top of the stairs, she was wearing a short cornflower blue skirt and a black vest top. She was bare foot and her hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail. She wasn’t wearing any makeup but it wasn’t exactly like she needed to. The usual silver cross hung loosely around her neck.

“So much for the postman” she smiled as she padded down the stairs. Dustin was standing beside Emelae, he had previously been preoccupied by looking at her elaborate green Victorian style dress but when Autumn appeared he had been drawn to her, now he was watching her every step as she came towards him.

Autumn was finding it equally hard to look away from Dustin, he was wearing tight black jeans with a loose silver belt and a tight fitting red top under a white open shirt with its sleeves rolled up. His hair was messy and wind swept, the look suited him.

“Postman aye?” he smirked, running his hand through his hair. Then shoving it into his pocket.

“He says nice things.” Autumn shrugged then asked “What are you doing here?”

“Just felt like it, I have nothing better to do.”

Autumn started walking towards the stairs and Dustin fell into step beside her. “So I’m your last resort am I?”

“I didn’t say I’d tried anything different before I came here.” He shrugged and put his hand at the base of her spine as if guiding her. She turned into her room and sat on her bed, folding her legs beneath her.

“Make yourself comfortable.”

Dustin moved to the bed and sat next to her, turning his body so he was mostly facing her, he was leaning so close that she could smell him. He smelt like lynx Africa mixed with something else, something masculine, alluring. Autumn leant forward slightly, and let out a long slow breath.

“Still have nothing better to do?”

Dustin put his hand on her arm, holding her still as he leant closer, pressing his nose to hers “I think I found something to be here for.” He whispered, letting his gentle breath brush her lips. She put her hands on the mattress and pushed herself up so her lips pressed against his, he opened his mouth and slid his tongue between her lips.

She pulled away, giving his lower lip a playful nip, a smile played around her lips. She sat back, propping herself up on her elbows, Dustin leant over her, putting his hands either side of her neck. She arched her neck as if to kiss him then quickly moved back again, she winked and sat up, pushing Dustin back.

“Tease.” He snapped.

“You love it.”

He shook his head “I’d love it more if you’d just kiss me again.”

Autumn smirked, she loved this, playful flirting with a gorgeous guy, it wasn’t going anywhere, it was just a bit of fun. At least she thought so; maybe it could turn into something serious, but she doubted it, Dustin wasn’t the type of guy you had a serious relationship with.

“Am I not allowed to just sit and enjoy the view?” Autumn put her hands in her lap and leant forward, she turned her head so she was looking out of the window.

Dustin followed her gaze “Oh you meant that view.”

“Why what did you think I meant?” Autumn asked innocently.

“Cheeky cow.”

“Gullible pig.”

“Foul mouthed *****”

“You love it.” Autumn pouted.

“I’m getting fed up with hearing you say that.”

“Bite me.”

Dustin grabbed Autumn around the waist and lifted her off of the bed, he dumped her onto the bean bags then fell on top of her. He held her wrists together in one hand, and then put his lips against her throat.

“You mean like this?”

“Figure of speech!” Autumn cried just as her door creaked open. They both looked up.

“Please don’t let me interrupt.” Jesse chuckled.

“What the hell happened to you?” Autumn asked, squirming out from underneath Dustin and jumping to her feet, she straightened out her skirt with a few self-conscious tugs and ran a delicate hand through her hair.

“I fell down a rocky hill.” Jesse shrugged, Autumn was close to believing it, his clothes were covered in small tears and spots of blood, his eyes looked slightly sunken and his hair was all over the place. Autumn couldn’t stop herself from moving forward and pulling him into a tight hug.

Jesse was shocked at first, so much so that he couldn’t move; Autumn had wrapped one arm around his waist and the other around his neck and was holding him against her, after a few moments he put his arms around her, hugging her back. She smelt like peaches, and her skin was incredibly soft, his stomach clenched.

She finally let go and took a step back, for one of the first times in her life she had nothing to say. Neither did Jesse, he was staring at her blankly, evidently waiting for an explanation, not that Autumn was going to give one, it would sound stupid if she said ‘I just felt like doing it’

Jesse looked over Autumn’s shoulder at the good looking boy standing behind her, he caught Jesse’s eye “You look like shit” he commented.

Jesse inhaled, “You smell like shit.”

Dustin frowned and put a possessive hand on Autumn’s shoulder, “Shouldn’t you be going off to get changed?” he asked.

“No, I like to look this shabby.” Jesse said sarcastically.

“Shabby, so you agree?” Autumn looked up at him from beneath her long lashes, and have a small wink.

Jesse bit his lower lip, not able to think of anything to say, Autumn seemed to have that effect on him. “I better go and get changed” Jesse said stupidly, he caught Dustin grinning over Autumn’s shoulder as he backed out of the room and headed down the corridor.

Why had he even bothered to go in there? Oh yeah, he’d heard Autumn say ‘bite me’ then scuffling, was it his fault that he had the curiosity of a cat?

Just found this yesterday and read the whole thing and I have just one question:
[QUOTE=Waste;65374
Black sofas were spread around the room, curved to fit neatly against the wall, there was a glass table that curved around the stairs, only broken where the stairs started, various items were strewn over the table, books and pens, sheets of paper, DVDs, CDs and a black Raven that watched him with narrowed black eyes.[/QUOTE]

What happened to the Raven?

lol, just kidding^^ Great story I like it very much so far, can't wait for more!

At three pm Dustin finally left, and Autumn waved him out of the door with a quick kiss. She turned around intending to return to her room when her breath caught in her throat, Jesse was standing at the top of the stairs. He was wearing a pair of black, loose fitting jeans and a loose white shirt. He had a towel around his neck that he was rubbing against his damp hair.

He grinned when he caught her looking and she quickly slipped her eyes away from him, usually she would have winked, or given a flirty wave but there was something about the way he had smiled that had caused her to become embarrassed. She could feel the sprinkle of a flush on her cheeks.

Jesse let the towel fall either side of his neck and descended the stairs, abducting his arms; he flashed another smile “Do I still look shabby?” he asked, coming to a stop a few feet in front of Autumn.

“You look clean.” Autumn acknowledged.

Jesse pouted “Thanks, I think.”

“Autumn.” Red’s voice came from the direction of the living room; she looked around to see him coming towards her slipping a small mobile into his pocket. “Go to your room.” His tone of voice implied that it wasn’t a suggestion.

“Why?” Autumn squared her shoulders.

“Hanson’s friend is…”

The front door swung open and a tall well built man with thick black hair stepped lightly into the room, his eyes were large with red iris’s, Autumn recognised the man as Don, the stranger Hanson had brought with him on his last visit. She had only met him briefly that time, as it was never entirely safe for her to hang around with Red’s ‘customers’. Even though his business sold animal blood to vampires some of his visitors weren’t entirely in control of themselves.

“Good afternoon Red. Autumn.” He nodded to both of them, ignoring Jesse.

“Well, it was” Autumn quipped, placing a hand on her hip. Jesse mentally winced, even when confronted by an apparent threat she still couldn’t keep her mouth shut.

“I think you should go to your room Autumn, give me and our friend some privacy.” Red’s voice was slightly strained; Don must have noticed it as he gave a small smile. Autumn felt a cold hand on her arm, and followed Jesse’s pull, he let go of her at the bottom of the stairs and split off towards the kitchen, Autumn didn’t need to glance over her shoulder to know that Don was still watching her.

She turned into her room and picked her phone off the side, she had two texts waiting for her, one from Monica inviting her out at the weekend and one from Dustin inviting her out the next night, which was a Friday.

She threw her phone back onto the side and spread herself out across her bed; she could smell Dustin on the sheets and found it slightly disconcerting. As if he was still in the room. She got off of the bed and looked around the room then blushed when she gave a sigh of relief at finding nothing hiding in the dark corners. No ghouls, no bogymen, no vampires.

“That colour suits your cheeks.” A gravely voice came from beside her, she looked around, no there were no vampire’s in the corners of her room, just one, standing at her door.

Don took a few steps forward, his huge frame blocked out the light from the hall, throwing a shadow across her room. She involuntarily took a small step back.

“A lot of things suit me.” Autumn gave a smile.

Don began to walk around he room “Flirtatious, even when you are afraid.”

“Who say’s I’m afraid?” she was slowly turning, keeping her eyes locked on Don and making sure that the bean bags separated them, it was obvious what he planned to do for she had been in this situation at least five times before. Red normally came to ward off any attacker…

“Red has gone out,” Don grinned.

Crap “That’s nice for him.” Autumn smiled again.

“That smile, it’s stunning.”

“I know.”

Don was suddenly standing in front of her, having leapt over the bean bags and taken the final few steps towards her in seconds; he put his thumb and forefinger along her collar bone and pushed her back against the wall.

“So vain.”

“I have good reason to be.” Autumn said, unable to keep her voice from shaking.

He slowly shook his head “Unbelievable” he put the thumb of his other hand under her chin and tilted her head up slightly. “Your staring death in the face, yet you still have the nerve to keep that attitude” He ran the thumb of his free hand along her jaw line and tilted her head up slightly, exposing her neck some more.

“You love it.” She murmured.

“I love your smell.” He bowed his head, putting his lips close to her neck.

“Red will kill you.”

Don pulled back “Finally, some fear!” he exclaimed.

“Autumn!” someone yelled, then Don was gone, Jesse had sent him flying across the room and straight through the door, he was on his feet in seconds, a snarl splitting his face. He ran at Jesse, and Autumn found it unbelievable that Jesse had been able to lift him, the guy was huge.

Jesse threw himself at the vampire wrapping his arms around Don’s waist and bundling him to the floor; he got to his feet and danced away before Don could get up. He crouched in front of Autumn, between her and Don.

“I’ve been around forty years longer than you Don, think about what you do before you do it.” Jesse growled. Don drew himself up to his full height, apparently trying to look intimidating. “Empty muscles” Jesse shook his head. Don glowered at Jesse before exiting the room, muttering something about whores being tasteless.

Jesse turned to Autumn, she was leaning heavily against the wall, her face masked with fear and worry, Jesse locked his eyes with hers, it took her mere seconds to compose herself, before looking up at Jesse, who stumbled forward and pulled her into a tight hug.

“I’m fine. I don’t need a hug.” She said, trying to push him away.

“Yeah but I do.” He whispered, pulling her tighter.

“Were you worried?” Autumn asked.

“I almost ripped him into pieces, you almost died”

“Happens everyday” Jesse pulled away and looked down at her his face slightly baffled “I live with vampires.” Autumn explained.

“Red wouldn’t hurt you.” She looked up at him, a shine in her blue eyes, questioning him. He hugged her again and his stomach clenched when she hugged him back “I wouldn’t hurt you.” He whispered. “That’s a promise,” he was pretty sure that he was over the worst of it, now that he had a stock of human blood. He loved the feel of her soft body against him and even though her smell lured him in it was in a way that made him want to keep her alive, just so he could share moments like this with her.

He phone vibrated on the side, Jesse glanced at it “Dustin is calling you.”

Autumn pulled away and picked up the phone, swift, elegant. No one would guess she had just had a near death experience. She answered the phone with a smooth hello and sat on her bed, pulling her legs underneath her.

“Dinner? You paying?” Jesse caught her eye and raised a thin brow; Autumn pulled a face, “Are you picking me up?” Jesse widened his eyes as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “I’ll see you tomorrow then.” Autumn disconnected and set the phone aside, she looked up at Jesse. “What?” she asked.

“You like to be in control don’t you?” Jesse asked.

“I like people to know where they stand.” Autumn smirked,

“So the answer to my question is yes then?” he came forward and crouched in front of her, resting his chin on the mattress.

“I’m not that controlling.”

“Lies.”

“Prove it.”

“He called you to arrange a date and you ended up arranging everything, he’s paying and picking you up!” Autumn put her hand against his cheek and pushed his head to the side.

“I think I deserve it.” She winked. Jesse kept his head to the side, leaning his cheek against the bed, Autumn absentmindedly brushed her fingers through his thick, soot coloured hair.

“Yes, you do.” Jesse whispered, closing his eyes.

Autumn drew her hand away “Why do you say that?”

He looked up at her, kind eyes resting on her gaze “You nearly died, you deserve a night out.” He winked.

“Then it is not bad of me to be controlling.” Autumn smirked and got off of the bed, she went to her wardrobe and flung the doors wide. “He is taking me to Ferns Restaurant tomorrow night, what should I wear?” she mused.

“Don’t ask me, that’s the gay friends job.” Jesse’s voice came from behind her, Autumn felt her breath catch in her throat, she hadn’t realised that he was so close.

She turned to face him “Can’t you be gay? Just for tonight?” she asked.

“Why me? You have girlfriends don’t you?”

“They aren’t here now are they?”

“So if I leave, I won’t have to…”

“Jesse! Your starting to make me feel so unwanted.” Autumn complained. “I was nearly killed and you don’t even care enough to help me pick out an outfit for my date.”

“Don’t go pulling that out on me! You seem to be pretty over your near death.” Jesse pointed at her. “Besides, helping with outfits is the best friends job. Call your best friend.”

“I think you deserve to have best friend status seeing as you saved me.” Autumn pouted.

“My simply saving you does not make me a best friend.” But maybe becoming her best friend is the closest I will get to her. He clenched his fist.

”Forgive me for wanting to spend time with you.”

Jesse looked up, only to find himself held in her eyes “Now why would you want to do that?”

“You don’t?”

“I do, but Red won’t approve.”

“Screw Red, I need a guy best friend.” Autumn winked.

“Still, don’t you think it is a bit early to be trying on outfits?”

Autumn blushed “No.”

“You are excited aren’t you?” he smirked.

“No.”

“Don’t lie to me, you can’t wait for this date,” Jesse prodded her shoulder, the action was not meant to be harmful, just annoying.

“I can.” Autumn pouted, turning her back on him to hide her flushed face.

“Then why do you want to start preparing for it now?”

“I…” Autumn bit her lip, was it wrong to say that she just wanted a reason to keep Jesse with her? Yes. “Do I need a reason?”

“Yes.” Jesse said it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“Fine, you can help me pick an outfit tomorrow then.” Autumn said, turning sharply and heading out of the wardrobe, she closed the doors behind her, leaving Jesse inside. She sat on her bean bags, facing away from her wardrobe, waiting for Jesse to come out.

“Autumn?” a strained voice came from the doorway, she looked up, Red was standing there, a drawn expression on his pale face. He rushed into the room and pulled her into a tight hug before she could respond. When he pulled away he ran his hands over her neck then looked down at her, worry twisting his face.

“Why don’t you just ask if I am ok?” Autumn sighed.

“Are you ok?” Red gave her a meaningful look.

“Tip top, thanks for asking.” she frowned.

He inhaled “Where’s Jesse?”

“Here.” The wardrobe doors creaked open and Jesse slid neatly into the room.

Red gave Autumn a puzzled look “I’m not even going to ask.”

“Red if I were you I’d be extremely worried,” Jesse pointed at Autumn, “That girl has too many clothes.”

Red frowned “Of course you would be the expert?” He straightened up, but there was more than humour in his eyes as he studied Jesse. Jesse must have seen it, as he did not respond. Red’s gaze returned to Autumn, who was still sitting elegantly on the beanbags. “Well are you going to tell me why I can smell both Don and Jesse all over you?”

“You know why you can smell Don.” Autumn said quietly, but of course Red was only worried about the part where Jesse was concerned “Jesse saved me”

“That doesn’t fully explain it.” Red pressed,

“I gave her a hug to make her feel better.” Jesse said, coming forward and standing beside Red. “The girl was about to have a mental break down.”

“No need for the jokes Jesse.” Autumn frowned.

“Who said I was joking?”

“’The girl was about to have a mental breakdown’”

“You weren’t?”

Autumn’s eyes narrowed, why did she suddenly feel like a little kid? Oh yeah, she’d just asked a 90 year old vampire to help her pick out an outfit for her date. She felt a faint blush rise to her cheeks again, why did she blush so often when Jesse was around?

“I’ll see you at dinner.” Red said before walking out of the room, apparently satisfied that she wasn’t going to start running around massacring the town for a few drops of blood.

“Sorry.” Jesse muttered.

“What for?” Autumn brushed the apology aside; she’d never really been any good at accepting them.

“Red?” Emelae crept into the kitchen; Red was standing opposite the fridge leaning casually against the side. He was wearing a tattered pair of washed out blue jeans and a tight long sleeved black top, neatly shaped around his sculpted arms. Emelae moved to stand in front of him, the hem of her pale pink dress rippling around her feet. She reached out and touched his shoulder, but he shrugged her off of him and turned away.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, slipping her slim arms around his waist and hugging herself against his firm back. She rested her head between his shoulder blades, “It’s Jesse isn’t it?”

“Partly.” Red whispered.

Emelae sighed and forced him to turn around; he traced his fingertips lightly over the sides of her thin waist, hugged by the corset part of her dress. He slipped his thumbs under th
