Red
Part One: Autumn Jesse Dark
He stood at the top of the worn stone steps, they were ancient, almost as old as he was and like him they did not crumble under the feet of the world. He surveyed the buildings that spread out in front of him and listened to the sound of a thousand sleeping. A baby was crying in the distance, un-heard by it’s parents, but he heard it.
A cool breeze tousled his copper hair, in the sunlight his soft locks would shine red, but there was no longer any light for him. His skin was pale and silvery under the shine of the distant moon, if he listened hard enough he could hear it whispering. Or was that just the soft rustle of the breeze over the trees that spread behind him, encircling The Tower.
He began to descend the chalky white steps, no need to hurry; he had all the nights in the entire world, only the sun could stop him now. The inevitability of the suns rays peaking over the horizon was all that would halt the descent into his bloody world.
When he reached the bottom of the steps he had to arch his neck to see the tops of the houses, they had seemed so insignificant before yet now that they towered above him he was reminded that the insignificance was in fact himself. He moved through the night a lot faster now, his sleek, strong body powering him forward, his black clothes rustling around him, pointless garments, built to keep in warmth the that he did not have.
He stopped outside the house where the baby still cried, ignored by its parents. That disgusted him, how could the adults in this house ignore their own kin and… another breeze blew over him sending the scent of blood rushing through him and a fresh pool of venom into his mouth. Now he understood, as the baby’s cries stooped to quieter sobs; Regal Ebony Dark understood.
He turned to walk away but the smell was too alluring and he found himself wanting to return to the house, the monster inside of him lusting for an easy kill. A night off of the chase, drain the blood from the already dead parents, take the baby as well.
He slipped into the house through the broken front door, and slinked down the pastel green hall, he could already tell from the hall that the child’s parents were wealthy. He scented the air and found that the scent trails split in two directions, one came from the direction of the baby’s cries the other from a room off to his left.
He went into the room to his left first; a male body was spread across the floor, a hole in his forehead still seeping blood. His hair was red with blood and had apparently once been blonde, and his eyes were pale and empty. A fresh slick of venom filled Regal’s mouth and he spat it out.
He stooped and ran his finger tips through the pool of blood on the wooden flooring, then lifted them to his lips and run his tongue over them, the taste made his throat scream for more. He ignored the dull ache and got to his feet, looking around the room. The walls were painted red and had pale squares on them where paintings used to be, the room was full of bare tables and shelves. This was a burglary gone wrong, or maybe it had gone exactly as planned, but surely any murderer would have killed the baby and finished the job.
Regal realised that he should leave the victims in their current states seeing as if he moved them their killers would never be caught, he frowned, since when did he care about such things? He turned slowly and walked back into the hallway, and followed the child’s sobs until he reached a pale yellow door. He pushed it open and entered the baby’s room.
The room was sky blue with fluffy white clouds stencilled onto the walls, during the day the room would probably be lit by the suns light pouring through the huge bay window that was next to a white cot, but the only thing the window was letting in was the moons silver glow, making the room feel eerie and strangely quiet. The baby had stopped crying the moment Regal had entered the room.
A woman was sitting on the floor, her dead body leaning against the cot, she also had a hole in her forehead but her body was completely naked, she had been raped. She had blonde hair, matted with blood. Even with the hole in her head and her face a film of pasty death she was beautiful. Regal approached the cot and stared down at the baby girl, lying in the pool of her mother’s blood that had crept into the cot after the woman had been shot, the force of the bullet exploding the back of her head.
He reached into the cot and delicately picked up the baby, he held her away from his cold body, studying her with his pale green eyes, fresh life, how badly he wanted to take her. The humans would know no different, he was a secret, how could they ever link this child’s death to a secret. He brought the girl closer to him and she squirmed in his arms, but didn’t cry.
Her gorgeous blue eyes showed no fear when she looked up at him from under her long eyelashes, her mothers blood ran down her back and covered Regal’s hands. She must have been under a year old yet those eyes had already witnessed great horrors. Anger bubbled inside of him as he thought about how she must have been woken by the gunshot that had killed her father. He could almost see her mother running into the baby’s room to protect the precious child, and was probably over powered by the murderer who had raped her in front of her daughter and then shot her, close range execution, he fought back the impulse to hunt down the people who had done this, the scent was still fresh, he could do it. If it wasn’t for the baby, he had to make sure she was safe first.
He took a final look at the dead woman, staring up at him with blank eyes, he held the girl against his body with one strong arm and stooped in front of her mum, he reached out and closed the woman’s eyes with his pale long fingered hand.
“Don’t worry” he whispered “I’ll protect her.”
This is like the opening page and a half of the part.

“Don’t worry” he whispered “I’ll protect her.”
He got to his feet and tucked the baby under his jacket, holding her awkwardly against his hard cold body, he left through the front door and stole away down the darkened streets, his throat aching for the girl the whole time, but he couldn’t bring himself to take her. Not when she was so innocent.
He had a memory, of a time when he was a lot younger when he was human. Nine years old. It was something that he rarely thought of, even after so many years it brought icy pain to his still heart. It brought with it a reminder of the great loss he had suffered; he could still feel the heat of the fire against his face from when he had watched his house burn taking his family with it. His mother, his father, his little baby sister.
When he had looked at the little girl, so unbelievably like his sister, and saw what someone had done to her parents he could not bring himself to hurt her further, even a babe feels pain. Even as she gurgled against his chest he knew she was hurting, and he had saved her. Even though he was well aware that a human family would have eventually found her the fleeting moment he had spent gazing into her beautiful eyes had told him that she would grow to be a beautiful woman. How could he trust a human family to protect her from the men she would face as she grew? He simply couldn’t.
He reached The Tower in the shortest time, having not taken the long route and not dawdled, and ran swiftly up the stone steps. He reached the door and rapped on it a total of three times, it swung inwards to reveal a grand foyer. It took up the whole of The Tower’s base and was lit by a roaring fire with a silver stair case in the centre that reached to the higher levels.
Black sofas were spread around the room, curved to fit neatly against the wall, there was a glass table that curved around the stairs, only broken where the stairs started, various items were strewn over the table, books and pens, sheets of paper, DVDs, CDs and a black Raven that watched him with narrowed black eyes.
The door slammed shut “What is that smell?” a delicate voice asked. Regal took a slow breath and turned to face his wife, Emelae was gorgeous, with flowing black hair and amber eyes held in a smooth rounded face. She had skin as pale as the moon and a small slim body; she wore a dark blue dress that out lined her curves and flowed around her feet. She had been brought up in Victorian times and had always loved the dresses, they were the one thing from her past that she never let go of.
“It is a baby. Her parent’s were murdered, I couldn’t leave her” he explained, keeping his voice quiet.
“Why? If the murderer was gone she was perfectly safe.” Emelae snapped, keeping her distance as the scent of blood put fresh venom in her mouth. “Why is there blood on it?”
“It’s her mother’s blood.” Regal whispered, pulling the baby out from under his coat.
“Oh my…” Emelae came forward, her wide amber eyes peering down at the baby. “Isn’t she lovely.” She reached out with a pale hand and stroked the baby’s head.
“Do you see now why she is not safe in these times Emelae?”
“Is she safe here Red?” Emelae used the name for Regal that she had used since the first time they had met and he had told her his full name. She also knew that the name warmed him as it reminded him of the colour his hair would go in the sun before he had been plunged into darkness.
“I’d never hurt her, would you?”
“No. I’ve always wanted a child.” It was true, she had wept for weeks when she had first found out that it was impossible for their kind to have children. All of her anger had disappeared the moment she had seen the baby, she reached out and took her from Regal’s arms.
“I’m going to give her a bath, wash away the horrors. “ She said, her voice light and airy as she walked up the stairs. Thirst was still burning in Regal’s throat, he knew his wife was also hungry but she was able to control it. He walked up the stairs to the next floor which was split into two rooms one of them was the bathroom, he could hear the taps running and Emelae talking quietly to the baby. He carried on up the stairs, passing through the third floor, which was a huge library, then the fourth, another room split into two, a kitchen and Jesse’s bedroom, he passed through the fifth which had a huge television and a few comfortable sofas and finally he reached the top floor.
The top floor was one big bedroom, with two huge wardrobes, one for Regal and one for Emelae. There was a curved white bed to the north of the room under a wide black curtained window that looked out over a large black lake. Not that the bed was really needed, vampires didn’t sleep.
He strode over to his wardrobe and pulled it open, taking out a pair of black tracksuit bottoms and a white cotton shirt. He pulled off his clothes that were smeared with blood and dropped them to the floor; he’d have to incinerate them.
Regal pulled on his fresh clothes and sat down on a large red sofa. He put his head in his hands, he had evidently not thought any of this through, how could a human grow up in a house of vampires? Even with vampires who could control their needs it was dangerous, yet he was sure that it would be more dangerous for her to live away from them.
“Jesse!” he called, a small pale boy with a head of sooty hair raced up the stairs and slid to a stop in front of Regal he looked about eighteen, he’d looked that age for fifty years.
“Regal.” He grinned, a smear of blood in the corner of his mouth, “You’re lucky I just got in.”
“Have you met our new addition?” Stupid question really Jesse would have smelt the baby the minute he’d arrived.
“You mean the human?” Jesse spat, he’d always disliked humans, but he had his reasons, and they were good enough for his hate to be marginally rational.
“Yes, I mean her.” Regal said gently, he knew how hard it would be for Jesse to accept her in fact he was scared that he wouldn’t at all.
“Why have you brought it here Regal?”
“Have you seen her?”
“No, I don’t need to, it’s human. What else is there to see?” Jesse’s voice was sharp. “I want it out Regal.”
“That is not your decision to make.”
“I live here as well.”
“And while you still do you will live under my rules.” Regal growled.
“But there is no way you can raise it in ignorance of our kind.” Jesse protested.
“I don’t plan to.”
“What happens when it realises what we do? When it realises that dearest daddy and mummy drink the blood of her kind?” Regal froze; he had him there, Jesse’s thin lips curled into a smile. “What if one day it sees you feeding? She’ll run screaming, it will be no different from any other human Regal!”
“We’ll raise her right, if we raise her to live by our rules…if we start feeding on animals, if we love her we can do it.” Regal said calmly, realising that what he was saying would be the foundation of the way he would be living for the next couple of decades,
“Feed on animals? I won’t live like that Regal.”
“You will live how I tell you to, I made you.” Regal cried,
“Then I’ll leave.”
“What?” Regal’s face dropped, Jesse could see a spark of sadness in his eyes.
“I won’t live here with that…thing.” Jesse hissed the last word.
“She isn’t going.”
“It is me or her Regal.”
Regal threw his hands into the air and jumped to his feet, “Don’t be stupid” he cried, anger sparking through him. “How can you expect me to choose?”
“It can’t be hard, your own kind or the human.”
“You haven’t looked at her. You haven’t seen what someone has done to her parents. She needs me Jesse.” Regal was suddenly quiet again, he ran his hand though his coppery hair and looked almost vulnerable. “I have to protect her.”
“What is wrong with you?” disbelief coloured Jesse’s tone.
“I don’t know, I just need to look after this child. I know that I have to do this.”
“Then do it without me.” Jesse said in a hard voice. He turned around and went to run down the stairs but Regal had his arm. Holding him back.
“Don’t leave Jesse, after 50 years, you can’t leave us.”
“I can. I won’t live with a human, they are evil creatures, and I can’t do it.” Jesse shook his head as he spoke, “They are our food! Not something we look after.”
Regal let his hand fall to his side, releasing Jesse, “It disappoints me that you think like that. Do me a favour, say goodbye to Emelae before you leave.”
“I will.” He turned and walked quickly down the stairs just like that, Jesse was gone, Regal stood at the top of the staircase, and listened to him speaking with Emelae, he heard Emelae give out a small sob and then the rustle as Jesse packed, it wasn’t long before the door slammed and Jesse had walked out of their lives. Regal could barely believe that it had happened so fast, it was the only time he had ever hated the way that vampires could move so quickly. He moved away from the stairs, feeling as if he was in a trance and sat on the bed. He heard the stairs creaking and seconds later Emelae appeared clutching a bundle to her chest with one arm, she put her finger to her lips.
“She’s asleep.” She said needlessly as she approached, something in her eyes told Regal that mentioning Jesse would be a bad idea. She sat next to Regal, pulling her legs up under her. “She’s perfect Red.”
“She still needs a name.”
Emelae looked down at the baby in her arms, a frown on her flawless face after a few seconds she whispered a name “Autumn.”
“Autumn Dark.” Regal rolled the name around in his mouth. It sounded right, fit nicely.
“Autumn Jesse Dark.” Emelae said, even quieter. “I like that better,”
Regal put his arms around his wife and pulled her against his chest, he gently kissed her forehead, and she turned her head so she could cry into his shoulder. He put a comforting hand on her back and pressed her against him holding her tighter, being careful not to crush Autumn.
“After all these years you’d expect me to have grown used to loss, it hurts me to know that we have just created another loss for us that I fear will come too soon. How are we going to do this Red?”
“Do you love her?” Regal asked.
“Yes”
“Then we can do it. We will have to make a few changes. Emelae you do realise that there is only one way that we can fail at this.”
“What’s that?”
“Lie to her.” Regal whispered into his wife’s hair. She looked down at the babe in her arms and pressed her forehead against Regal’s, they sat in each others arms and watched Autumn sleep.

In the next month Regal noticed that his wife smiled a lot more, even though living on animals was not enough to fully satisfy them, they had to get by. For Autumns sake. It was a struggle at first, in the first week Regal found that he had to lock himself away to keep from hurting anyone, venom was a constant taste in his mouth and a permanent reminder of what he could do.
It was coming up to summer and as the days grew longer and brighter Regal had to limit how much time he spent outside, although direct sunlight would not kill him it would cause him to become very hungry very fast and he could not afford that, they took every precaution they could around Autumn.
Emelae hardly ever left the house, they couldn’t risk putting Autumn on show, the police were looking for her. Regal had often spoken to Emelae about moving out of the town but she always refused, saying that she didn’t want to move away from the place where she had been born, of course that was a complete lie, he knew that she was waiting for Jesse to return, not that they ever spoke about that.
After a long day of trying to keep Autumn from crying, she was teething; Emelae sat at the kitchen table spooning a concoction of apricot and banana into Autumns mouth. Regal was out hunting, he was collecting blood for her and would be back any minute,
“Come on eat something, Red will be back soon.” Emelae told Autumn, with a smile on her rounded face. Regal and Emelae had already agreed that Autumn wouldn’t know them as Mummy and Daddy Regal had been adamant that it would be an insult to Autumn’s real parents.
Autumn gave Emelae a look that said ‘are you kidding me?’ and clamped her tiny mouth shut refusing to eat anything else. Emelae set the spoon down and looked into the child’s gorgeous blue eyes, tears appeared in them and Autumn gave a small whimper and held her arms out for Emelae to pick her up. Emelae scooped the delicate girl into her arms and held her close singing sweetly to her as she did every night when it was time for bed.
“Say sweet child say,
Where goes the beautiful day?
Love sweet child love
I’ll take you on a jour-ney
Listen to me Autumn
Sing sweet child sing
Where goes the day my beauty?
Sleep my Autumn. Sleep.”
By the time she had finished the song that she had made up Autumn was asleep in her arms. She kissed her small forehead and couldn’t keep the smile off of her face. She heard the front door slam a few floors below and it was not long before Regal stormed in clutching the day’s newspaper between his long fingers, he slammed it onto the kitchen table waking Autumn who began to cry . His face was a mask of pure hatred
“Red?” Emelae frowned. Bouncing the baby in her strong arms.
“Read it.” Regal growled.
Emelae scanned the front page, reading faster than humanly possible. Her expression went from confusion to shock to realisation.
“Wife and husband found dead in there home.
Last night Julie and Brandon Andrews were found dead in their home to the east of Creeds. Police are not giving out much information but it has been said that the killings show similarities to those of Sandy and Gareth Nickels, who were murdered a few weeks ago, police are still searching for their missing child and the murderer…”
Emelae reached out and touched Regal’s arm, tracing her fingertips over his strong muscles and down to where his fist was clenched, the tendons prominent on the back of his hand. His breathing was coming in short angry gasps. Emelae got to her feet and pulled him into a one armed hug, he was shaking all over.
“What if they had had a child Emelae?”
“I don’t know.” She whispered.
“I can’t let this carry on, that’s two families in one month” He put one hand on Autumn’s head and rubbed gentle circles into her cheek with a thin thumb trying to calm her gentle sobbing, it was as if she knew what he meant. He pulled out of Emelae’s embrace and headed towards the stairs.
“There is a bag of blood on the glass table.” Regal said, not an ounce of emotion in his voice. What he was going to do would push him to his limits, kill and not indulge.
“You don’t have to Red,” Emelae whispered, even though she knew that he did.
Regal turned and walked out of the room without looking back, he descended into the foyer and then out into the dark night. The night sky held no moon so the stars, which gave off just enough light for his highly advanced eyes, lit his way. He took the steps two at a time and when he reached the bottom he scented the air; blood was still fresh on the wind.
He jogged down the narrow streets following the scent of human blood, venom was flowing into his mouth, even though the scent was not strong, he had not tasted human blood for a month, he had been dead for over one hundred years and he had never gone so long.
He finally found the house where the murder had taken place, the door was barred with yellow crime scene tape, he slipped under it and walked through the house, the smell of blood was stronger in the living room, he breathed in the scent, a male was killed in the living room, just like Autumn’s father. He didn’t go looking for the female’s scent; he just spat out another wave of venom and scented the air. It didn’t take him long to find a scent, nearer the same age as the blood spill and from a person who was very much alive, one male. The murderer. No, he took in another deep breath, murderers. Plural.
Regal left the house, following the scent of three men through the darkened streets; the lampposts were both dim and too far apart, but once again his eyes were able to seek out the smallest amount of light and use it to his advantage. It surprised him when the scent did not disappear, and stopped right outside the door of a shabby bungalow, just a ten-minute drive from the house where the couple were murdered, and five minutes from The Tower; it made him sick to think that the people who murdered Autumn’s parents lived so close.
He cautiously approached one of the filthy windows and tried to look inside, but it was covered with black drapes, it was three am and the house would be dark, which really wouldn’t help Regal, sight was essential in what he needed to do, but it looked like he would have to rely purely on scent.
He crept around the front of the bungalow to the front door, keeping low to the ground. The door opened easily with a small crack, the locks were pathetic, revealing a dingy hallway littered with food wrappers. Regal crept inside; staying in a crouched position, ready to pounce. He could not see a thing. The house was pitch black as he had guessed it would be, but not silent. He could hear somebody moving about in the next room, evidently woken up by Regal opening the front door.
“Jeff, oi Jeff, there’s someone in the ‘ouse” a rough Irish voice was hissing urgently.
“Go back ta bed Frank.” Jeff said, stupid man, he was being too loud for his own safety, Regal now knew that Jeff was lying in the far corner of the room that’s entrance was a few feet in front of him.
“Jeff, I’m bein serious man!” the frightened Irish voice belonged to a man a lot younger than he should have been, how could a murderer sound so young and innocent? Regal took in the scents of the house and sure enough there were only three men there, all three of them had been at the crime scene.
The room a few feet in front of Regal was suddenly full of light that slipped out into the hallway, stupid men. “Oi turn that light out boy!” A man who wasn’t Jeff cried.
“There’s someone in the ‘ouse Luke. Shut ya mouth will ya?” Frank hissed.
Regal took a few steps forward so he was standing in the doorway to the small bedroom crammed with three beds and littered with cans of beer. He could smell the blood of the victims strongly in the room, possibly on the men’s shirts that were hidden somewhere.
The man in the corner, whom Regal took to be Jeff, quickly sat up in his filthy bed, his face a picture of pure horror. He had thick brown hair that looked incredibly greasy, he said nothing. But the other man in the bed at the opposite end of the room, Luke, cried out in shock and pulled a gun out from under his pillow. Frank stood in the middle of the room, not moving.
Frank was a young boy of about twenty-four; he had bright ginger hair, green eyes and a bad case of acne. “Who are ya?” he asked in a shaky voice. Regal couldn’t blame him for the fear, it wasn’t every day that you saw a man with a face like his, contorted with hate, he glared at the men.
“I know you killed the Nickels and the Andrews.” He said, his voice a low growl in the back of his throat.
“You got the wrong people man.” Jeff piped up, his voice unwavering.
“No, I haven’t.”
“I think we’ll be the ones who decide that don’t you?” Luke took the safety off of his gun with a fatal click. Regal took a quick step towards Luke, and a gunshot echoed through the house, Regal took a step to the side, dodging the bullet.
“Nawh man, that’s not right.” Frank gasped.
“Now, did you boys kill the Nickels family?” Regal asked, cocking his head to the side slightly.
“No!” Luke cried.
Regal leapt across the room, dodging another bullet, he slammed Luke against the wall, the gun dropped to the floor. “Tsk Tsk, I don’t like liars Luke.”
Jeff was on his feet now, “Prove it! You have no evidence!”
“Oh but I do, I can smell their blood on you Jeff,” Regal hissed turning his head to look at the beast of a man, in his late thirties, who had stepped in front of Frank.
“Smell it? What are you some kind of animal?” Luke cried. Regal returned his attention to the man he had pinned up against the wall.
“And you, I can smell her all over you, Mrs Nickels I mean. You raped her Luke, then shot her in cold blood.” Regal opened his mouth wide exposing his teeth.
“Vampire.” Luke whispered, the colour left his cheeks; his eyes were suddenly filled with realisation, and fear. Sweet fear. Regal closed his hand around Luke’s neck and snapped it with a flick of his wrist; he dropped the man to the floor in a crumpled heap and turned to face Jeff and Frank.
“I’m going to ask one more time.” He kept his voice low and menacing. “Did you murder the Nickels and Leave their only child in a bath of her mother’s blood?”
Frank nodded silently; his eyes empty pits that just showed that he had given up. Regal flicked his gaze to Jeff who was holding a gun in his left hand. “Regal Ebony Dark.” Jeff hissed, “I know what you are now, I’ll kill you.”
“And on what do you base your assumptions?”
“My father used to tell me stories of you, and your wife, living up in that tower. You’ve been there for over a hundred years, you thought that each generation would simply forget you, but my father never did!”
Regal’s mouth stretched into a thin smile, “Now I have to kill you,” He ran forward and dodged out of the way of the third bullet, he spun around the human with so much speed that he was just a blur. He put a muscled arm around Jeff’s throat and yanked him down; he hit the floor with a bone-breaking crack. The gun flew out of his hand and landed at Frank’s feet, the boy had been standing silently in the corner, unmoving.
Regal dropped to a crouch beside Jeff and placed his strong hands on the mans chest, “I like the way you thought you could ever win this,” Regal laughed cruelly. “But how could you, you are just a man.” He raised his hands and slammed them onto Jeff’s chest causing the ribs to brake, puncturing the lungs and crushing his heart. He got to his feet. “Two down.” He hissed.
He walked towards Frank, so casually that under different circumstances he could have been walking up to his best mate in a park. Frank was holding the gun in a steady, pale hand. He pointed it at Regal.
“That can’t help you boy.”
“I know,” Frank turned the gun around and held it out for Regal to take. “Make it painless,”
Regal weighed the weapon in his pale hands and dropped it to the floor, he couldn’t risk spilling the blood of these men, he took Franks frail neck in one of his hands and tightened his grip.
“Would it help if I said I were sorry?” Frank asked.
“I’m not the one you should be apologising to, I didn’t loose my parents a month ago.”
“You have her don’t ya? The baby.”
“Yes. She is safe with me.”
“What is her name?”
“If you are stalling for time, nobody is coming.”
“Even if someone did come all you would have to do is flick your wrist,” Frank said, locking his eyes with Regal’s.
Regal considered this for a moment, “She is called Autumn, Autumn Jesse Dark.”
“I’m sorry Autumn” Frank whispered as he closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. Regal twisted his wrist, breaking the boys neck. A painless death, much more than he deserved.
Regal left the house, and walked silently back to The Tower, a single thought whirring in his mind, Jeff and Luke knew about vampires. How many more people did? By the time Regal reached his bedroom, where Emelae was sitting on the bed Autumn asleep in her arms, he had made a decision that would change their lives.
“Emelae, we have to leave, we aren’t safe here.”

“I’ll see you tonight.” Autumn called over her shoulder as she approached the black limo with tinted windows that was waiting for her outside Darlington 6th Form. She heard Jenny shout goodbye just before she slipped into the back seat, and found herself sitting next to Red.
“Tonight? Where are you off too?” he asked as the limo pulled away from the curb, he looked down at Autumn with curious eyes.
“Everyone officially finished their exams today so we are meeting up at Monica’s.”
“And you asked my permission when exactly?” Red’s voice was slick but affectionate as he curled his strong arm around Autumn.
“I don’t need your permission to go out anymore Red” Autumn said stubbornly, brushing a lock of white blonde hair behind her ear. She rested her head against Red’s shoulder and they slipped into an easy silence, it wasn’t until they were a few minutes from their house that Red spoke.
“Will there be drink?”
“Yes.” Autumn said curtly, she never lied to Red.
“Weed?”
“Yes.”
“Boys?”
“Yes.”
“You aren’t going.” He said in a voice that was meant to end the conversation.
“Bite me.” Autumn growled as the limo stopped, she hopped out, and waited at the door of her home, a huge manor house with six bedrooms, two living rooms, a dining room, a large kitchen and a scattering of bathrooms, for Red to unlock the door, she felt a cool hand close around her shoulder.
“I wish you wouldn’t use that terminology Autumn.”
“Sorry Red,” she said innocently, not meaning it.
“And I think it best not to let Emelae know about tonight, let’s just tell her that you are having a friendly sleep over at Monica’s with Jenny and Darien.” Red said as he unlocked the door and led Autumn into the house.
“Yes sir.” Autumn smiled, they entered a wide entrance hall with a staircase at the far end leading up to the bedrooms. Autumn could smell food cooking in the kitchen to her right and the television was on in the lounge to her left. She popped her head into the living room and glanced at the television, Emelae was watching the five o’clock news.
“Good afternoon.” Emelae said in greeting, “You’re a bit late.”
“I know, we had a small celebration after the exams.”
“So you left Red outside whilst you had your celebration?”
“Yup.”
“Good, that man needs a bit of patience.” Emelae chuckled,
Red strolled into the room holding two wine glasses filled with a thick crimson liquid. “So I suppose you are full of patience my dear?”
“Well of course I am.” Emelae replied delicately, her amber eyes fixed on the wine glasses.
“Then I suppose you won’t mind waiting a bit longer for this then?” Red indicated the glass in his left hand and took a sip from the one in his right. Emelae got to her feet and reached for the glass but Red held it high, out of her grasp. She jumped, higher than humanly possible, but Red quickly moved it to the side. He took a mouthful of blood from the glass in his right hand; Emelae took a few quick steps forward and pulled Red into a deep kiss, sucking the liquid out of his mouth. She pulled away and licked the remaining blood off of her lips.
“Now you’re never going to get your glass.” Red smirked.
“Fine,” Emelae turned her back on him and folded her arms “No sex.”
Red lowered the glass slightly “For how long?”
“Two years.”
“You can’t even go for two years!” he choked.
“Want to bet?”
He held her glass out to her and she took it with a smirk on her face, “You still can’t go that long!” he accused.
“Course I can. Unlike you. You’d give in after about a week.”
“Never.”
“Prove it.”
“Fine I will. And whoever gives in first isn’t allowed to hunt for five years.” Red growled.
“Deal.” Emelae grinned and drained her glass then turned to face Autumn, “Sorry dear, is there something you wanted?”
“Yeah I need a lift to Monica’s at six and I was wondering Red, if you aren’t to busy begging Emelae for sex, could you ask Jason” the chauffeur “to come pick me up.” Autumn gave a sweet smile.
“Sure, but I’ll have you know that Emelae is going to be the one begging.”
“Whatever, I’ll be back down in an hour.” Autumn waved her thin hand and turned out of the room, she walked up the flight of stairs and then down a pastel pink hall to a black door. She swung it inwards and stepped into her large lime green room.
It was furnished with a black double bed that was below a large bay window that looked out over the garden. There was a walk in wardrobe to her left with white wooden doors that matched the floor and a desk stretched along the right wall. In the centre of the room was a huddle of black and green beanbags. A black-rimmed ornate mirror was next to the wardrobe doors; its frame was extremely gothic and made of heavy metal.
Autumn crossed the room and threw open the doors to her wardrobe, she walked in and picked out a short black and baby blue striped dress that had a little black frill around the bottom and matched her eyes and a pair of black pumps. She carried the dress into her room and put it onto her bed and then slipped into her private bathroom to shower.
Ten minutes later and she reappeared, a green towel hugging her thin pale body. She dressed in some lacy underwear and pulled on the tight strapless dress, it took her another fifteen minutes to dry her thick white blonde hair ,that fell to just below her shoulder blades. She puffed her hair out when it was bone dry and applied some pale lip-gloss and a thin layer of eyeliner and massacre.
She stood in front of the gothic mirror to examine the end result. Of course she looked dazzling, her skin was flawless and her blue eyes shone like sapphires. She had a small but curvy body and her breasts were just the right size, add in a pair of skinny, smooth legs and no guy could resist her. She was as beautiful as a vampire but she had that added hint of colour in her cheeks that made her human. She knew how to look good and that made her dangerous.
It was six pm and all that was needed was a long black leather coat pulled in tightly at her waist to hide the clothes from Emelae. When Red called up the stairs Autumn was just shoving a few overnight things in a small green rucksack.
She exited her room and moved gracefully towards the stairs, but didn’t take the stairs, instead she sat on the banister, both legs on one side she was a lady after all, and slid down. Red caught her at the bottom, holding her close in his strong arms. He inhaled.
“You smell lovely,” he complimented. “Going to a party by any chance?”
“No, just a sleep over at Monica’s.” Autumn replied innocently.
“Can I come?” he asked with a fang-flashing smile, “Horror movies are my favourite.” He was carrying her towards the front door as he spoke.
“That’s because you are one big horror movie.” Autumn frowned.
“Only to deers.” He smirked.
Autumn felt a breeze rustle through her hair, she hadn’t realised that they were outside, hadn’t even felt his arm leave her so he could open the door, it didn’t bother her too much, she was used to the way he moved.
“Nawh I bet you could be the horror of this town if you really wanted to Red.” Autumn told him as he put her down and she slipped into the limo.
“Probably, but you know I never would.” He said when he was also in the car. It pulled away from the curb and headed to Monica’s house.
“You are so merciful Red.”
“Well of course, if I wasn’t mine would be the supreme race.” He winked.
“Nawh, we’d still get away, us humans are pretty devious when we want to be.”
Red gave a light chuckle “Yes, humans are very dangerous creatures, especially the one that is sitting right next to me.”
Autumn raised a thin eyebrow. “Carry on then, I want to know more about this dangerous human.”
“Well she is seventeen years and eight months old, and going to a party that I’d rather not let her go to, but even though I could easily restrain her, easily lock her in her room and very easily knock her unconscious until the party is over, I am still not strong enough to do it.”
“Why’s that?”
“All she has to do is look at me with her innocent eyes and all my reasoning is gone.”
“Ah so she is a very powerful creature then,” Autumn said smugly.
“The girls a demon.”
“Correction, the girl is a very sexy demon.”
Red studied her for a moment “Beautiful is more like it.” The limo stopped moving as he finished the sentence, they were there, Red could hear the loud music, pulsing inside the house.
“Thank you Jason!” Autumn called through the screen that blocked off the drivers area.
“Anytime darling” Jason called back.
“See, any guy would do anything for you, demon.” Red hissed, leaning forward and placing a gentle kiss on her cheek. Autumn gave him another smug look before opening the door and getting out of the limo.
“I’ll call you when I want to be picked up.” She went to close the door but Red was holding it open, “What?”
“Do me a favour…”
“Be safe. I know Red. “ She said before he could finish his sentence.
“Good girl. I love you.”
“Love you too.” She said quietly as he closed the door and the limo sped away.
Autumn turned to face the two storey house, all the lights were on and balloons were hanging on the black door, she walked up the steps that led to the front door and rang the bell. When nobody answered she rang it again, the door swung open on the third ring and Autumn stepped into the house.
The music was almost ear splitting, the hall alone had seven teenagers in it, chatting merrily and drinking what looked like coke, of course Autumn new better than to assume that. She turned as the door closed and embraced Monica.
Monica was five feet tall and had short black hair with merry brown eyes, she was wearing a pair of dark denim shorts and a white corset that enhanced the size of her breasts. She had high heels on her feet bringing her up to Autumn’s height.
“You can dump your stuff in my bedroom.” She shouted over the music.
“Thanks!” Autumn shouted back. She went to the stairs in the corner of the hall and climbed to the second floor, stepping over a few people on the way, when she reached the landing she went up another set of stairs that took her into Monica’s room, it used to be the loft. The music was a lot quieter in Monica’s sky blue room, but Autumn found that she wasn’t alone. A boy with copper coloured hair was sitting on the bed, she didn’t know him that well, he was new to Darlington, but it did not surprise her that he was at the party, knowing Monica their whole year was at this party.
“Hay, sorry if I’m not suppose to be here but the music was getting a bit much for me.” He said quickly, but Autumn caught the lie in his green eyes.
“What you mean is that you hardly know anybody and felt out of place so you came up here to sulk.” Autumn gave a light smile as she crossed the room and dumped her rucksack onto the bed, she pulled off her leather jacket and hung it on the bed knob.
“How’d you know that?” the boy asked, Autumn turned to face him and his eyes connected with hers, it surprised her that he wasn’t looking anywhere else like most guys would.
“I’m good at reading people.” Was the short answer, the longer one would have gone something like ‘I live with vampires so when their friends have visited there have been a number of threats to my life, the need to look at people and know whether or not they were lying became kind of essential.’
“What’s your name?” The boy asked, “Sorry, I know I should know it and it must sound really ru…”
Autumn held up her hand to stop him from talking “To be honest I don’t know your name either.” She gave a small smile and held out her manicured hand “I’m Autumn Jesse Dark.”
He took her hand “I’m Luke, Luke Francis Releart. “ he lifted her hand and brushed the back of it with his lips.
“Do you want a drink Luke?” Autumn asked.
“Well it is a party.” He flashed a set of perfect white teeth. Autumn tightened her grip on his hand and led him to the ground floor of the house and then into the kitchen, which was filled with a lot more people. She went over to the bar to find Jenny standing behind it handing out drinks. She was wearing a tight strap top with a tutu like skirt and casual flats.
“Two vodka and cokes please bartender.” Autumn gave a light laugh. “Make them strong.”
“Whatever.” Jenny sighed and began mixing the drinks. “Why do I always get bar duty?” She asked taking a mouthful of each drink before putting them on the smooth tabletop for Autumn and Luke to pick up. She thanked Jenny and then led Luke into the large living room where the music was loudest, the room was packed with a rowdy bunch of horny and drunk teenagers swaying to the music, Autumn scanned the crowd and laughed as she recognised the faces of most of them. Each person in the room had a partner, whether it be their girlfriends of boyfriends or simply best mates, some of them were with people who they would never have dreamed of getting with in the land of the meek and sober.
Luke turned and dragged Autumn from the room, across the kitchen and out into the garden where a bunch of people were sitting on the grass smoking joints. “Doesn’t feel right in the living room,” he commented.
“I know what you mean, it’s like you need to be half way to an orgasm to be in there.” Autumn joked.
“Aliens!” a voice came from the direction of the group on the grass. The smell of cannabis was strong in the air, Autumn found two chairs near the door and they both sat down. Luke set his glass on the floor and rummaged in his pocket, he pulled out a small metal cylinder. He pressed a button on the top of it and pointed it towards the stoners.
Autumn felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up to find Monica standing over her, a glass of straight vodka in her hand. “You aren’t drunk, you need more.” Was all she said, she poured half of the glass into the cup in Autumn’s hand turning her once one part vodka two parts coke drink into two parts vodka one part coke.
Autumn picked Luke’s glass off of the floor, which was also half empty, and Monica tipped the rest of the vodka into it. “Oh and later Jenny is going to try and whip up some cocktails and there is spin the bottle at ten, it’s eight now. Be there or be square Autumn.”
“I’ll…” Autumn stopped when she heard cries of fear coming from the stoner’s circle and even a few eruptions of laughter.
“We’re gonna diiiie!” One girl cried out whilst rolling around in hysterics. It didn’t take Autumn long to work out the source of the problem, a red dot was shining on the fence and moving steadily towards the group.
“It’s a sniiiper!” One guy cried out in a high girlish voice.
“No it’s not, it’s darleks!” another said.
“Aliens!!!”

A bark of laughter came from beside Autumn, she looked to find Luke aiming his little metal cylinder in the groups direction, she finally realised what it was, a red laser.
“That’s kind of evil.” Autumn pointed out.
“Pretty dammed funny though.” Luke replied as he stopped the light on a boy’s forehead.
“Oh my god! Oh my god Scot it’s got you! The darlek has you!” A girl shrieked and then crumpled with laughter.
Autumn let out a small giggle “True, but still evil.”
Luke took his finger off of the button and put the laser back in his pocket, he picked up his drink and downed it like water. He locked eyes with Autumn who raised her glass to her lips and did the same.
“Big drinker I see?” Luke approved.
“Bigger than you.”
“Want to prove that?”
“Your on.” She smirked and headed back into the kitchen, she returned with four shot glasses. She handed two of them to Luke. “Ready?”
“Always.” He lifted his chin and tipped the contents of both of them into his mouth, then dropped his gaze to Autumn, she grinned and drank both of her shots, ignoring the thick, hot liquid that stung her throat.
She took a deep breath “Again?”
∞
Drumming? Why was there drumming? Where was she? Some sort of concert? She winced. It was defiantly loud enough to be a concert. It hurt her head, and rattled her bones. Autumn slowly opened her eyes, she groaned as the pain in her head sharpened. A sharp memory flashed through her mind, she remembered entering Monica’s house; she remembered meeting a boy, Luke? And aliens, there was something about aliens.
Autumn tried to roll onto her side but found that she was being held in place by a pair of strong arms. Strong male arms. Shit. She took a quick looked down at her body and let out a low sigh of relief, she was wearing a pair of shorts and a baggy t-shirt. Not being naked was a good sign, the second good sign was that when she rubbed her leg against the legs of the body beside her she could feel denim, the guy she was with wasn’t naked either.
A low groan echoed in her ear, causing another sharp pain, how much had she drunk? Enough to not remember anything past Aliens. The arms around her loosened and she rolled free to find herself lying in Monica’s bed next to an extremely gorgeous, and topless, guy.
He had chin length curly brown hair and bright blue eyes, he had high cheek bones and a thin jaw line with a sprinkling of stubble, his chest was neatly defined and supporting a six-pack, no wonder he had been able to hold her down so easily. The “Just got up” look fitted him perfectly; a name swam into Autumn’s mind, Dustin?
She smiled sweetly when his eyes were fully open; he ran a strong, tanned hand through his already messy brown hair. “Autumn Jesse Dark.” He smiled back.
“Dustin Gully. Don’t you look dashing.” Autumn pouted, running her eyes over his topless chest again.
“Never expected to wake up next to you.” He said, brushing off her compliment. “Wish I could remember how I ended up here though.”
A few images flashed through Autumn’s mind, “Spin the bottle.”
“I got lucky,” he winked.
So did I “And if I remember rightly…” Autumn trailed off and rolled to the side of the bed, she peeked over the edge and sure enough Luke was curled on the floor an empty cocktail glass beside him, the tip of his thumb grazed his lips. She felt a warm body press against her back and Dustin’s brown locks brush her cheek.
“Aw isn’t he just precious.” Dustin cooed, reaching down and squeezing Luke’s cheek, Luke jumped and sat up.
“You *****!” he cried before holding his head and collapsing again. “This is your fault Dark.” He moaned.
“Shouldn’t have been so stubborn should you Luke?” Autumn grinned, pushing herself into a seated position on the edge of the bed. Third good sign, she was still wearing a bra.
“Excuse me but I won”
“Prove it.”
“I didn’t end up lying in bed looking as if I was trying to scoop some ones tonsils out with my tongue!” Luke shot at her.
“I don’t need to be drunk to do that, have you seen the boy?” Autumn gestured towards Dustin who was still lying on the bed, a faint blush rose to his cheeks.
“I find that morally offensive. If that’s all it takes to get you into bed then why not choose me?” Luke joked.
“Do you even know what morally offensive means?”
“No. But the point still stands.”
Autumn slipped off the bed “Maybe I’ll do you at the next party.” She said over her shoulder as she headed to her overnight bag that was in the corner.
Luke came up behind her “Did you do him?” he hissed.
“Jealous?” Autumn asked as she stooped to rummage through the bag.
“No, just needed to know how hard I’m going to have to try.” He gave a small laugh then “You didn’t answer my question though.”
Autumn stood up and turned to face him, clutching a pair of jeans, a black button up shirt and a cosmetics bag, to find Luke standing a few inches in front of her. “No Luke I did not screw him.” She whispered. Then pushed gently past him and headed towards the stairs, Dustin was still on the bed, apparently asleep.
“You getting ready to go already?” Luke asked.
“Yeah, Red will be worried, it hurts him enough to let me stay away for the night” Autumn called back as she descended to the landing, where a few boys were curled up, fast asleep. She glanced at the clock above the bathroom door, it was 11 am. She slipped past the bunch of unconscious teenagers and went into the bathroom, where she found Jenny and Monica asleep in the bath.
She crept to the edge of the bath and locked her hand around the cold silver showerhead; she flicked on the cold water and held it over the girls. Monica was the first to wake up, with an ear splitting shriek that almost made Autumn drop the shower and clutch her head.
“Autumn you cow!” Jenny cried,
“Get out I need to get changed” Autumn sighed whilst replacing the shower on it’s silver stand and helping Monica out of the bath.
“Why are we in the bath?” Jenny asked as if she had only just realised where they were.
“Because you got completely rat arsed last night.” Autumn explained, pulling Jenny out. She rubbed her neck and stretched her arms above her head.
“Indeed I did.” Jenny mused “Now I remember why I always volunteer to be bar tender”
“Out.” Autumn snapped.
“We’re going.” Monica shot back, as she stumbled out of the bathroom with Jenny. Autumn closed, and locked, the door behind them and let out a long breath. Her head was still ringing from Monica’s shriek.
She glanced in the mirror, good sign number four her makeup wasn’t smudged badly and the bed head look suited her, she hadn’t looked like an idiot in front of Dustin. She opened her cosmetics bag and pulled out a face-cleansing wipe.
She had just finished wiping her makeup off when she heard Monica shouting. “Is that a hedgehog!?”
“Yeah, noooo.” Came the reply, just as loud.
“Where did you find a hedgehog?”
“What hedgehog?”
“Harry are you still stoned?”
“I gots a hedgehog.”
Autumn gave a light chuckle and started getting dressed, trying to listen to the conversation that had dropped in volume, she heard a few words like “Idiot” “Stoned” and the word “hedgehog” was repeated a couple more times but other than that the conversation was lost as the rest of the house started to wake up.
Autumn left the bathroom dressed in a pair of dark blue bootleg jeans and a black button up shirt with the top button undone, she had a white gold chain around her neck with a white gold cross hanging from it, nothing to do with religion it was a private joke between herself and Red, the landing was clear of all bodies and the house was quite, either because the party goers had all left or collapsed down stairs, the latter being the more likely.
Autumn ascended the stairs to the loft bedroom and found that Luke was sitting on the bed next to Dustin, there was a can of mousse, Monica’s, in his hand and he was spraying it onto Dustin’s palm. She could see exactly what he was intending to do.
“That never works you know?” Autumn said casually as she crossed the room to pack her bag.
“Shut up” Luke hissed.
“Why are you doing it Luke?” Autumn asked without turning around.
“What can I say? I like taking advantage of the dead.” Luke shrugged, setting the can aside. Autumn got to her feet and retrieved her coat from a corner of the bedroom; she couldn’t remember how it had gotten there, something about a teddy fashion show came to mind and sure enough when she lifted the coat a green teddy bear fell out.
Autumn straightened up just as a muffled thwack came from the direction of the bed, then a thump as someone hit the floor; she turned around casually and glanced in the direction of the bed. Luke was lying on the floor white mousse all over his face and Dustin was sitting up examining his white sticky hand.
“Dustin I don’t think it is sanitary to spray on peoples faces.”
“He loved it,” Dustin smirked, running his moussed up hand through his hair messing it up so it was sticking out in every direction.
“Looking good.” Autumn commented,
“Likewise.” Dustin shot back.
“Can someone help me up?” a whine came from Luke’s direction. Autumn walked towards Luke, a chuckle poised on her full lips. She grasped Luke’s wrist and pulled him to his feet, he gave a small smile and wiped the mousse off of his face with the back of his hand, revealing flushed cheeks.
Autumn let go of his wrist and pulled a small silver Motorola out of her bag, she flipped it up and dialled Red’s number. She pressed the cold case of the phone against her ear and waited for him to answer.
“Autumn.” His voice was relieved, as it always was when he spoke to her after she had been away from home all night.
“Hay, you want to come pick me?”
“Sure thing beautiful.” He said smoothly then disconnected, it was most likely that he was already out of the door. She felt a hand on her shoulder and span around, Dustin was standing a few inches away from her, in all his topless glory. Autumn couldn’t help but think.
“You going already?” he asked, his voice slightly hurt, a car beeped it’s horn from outside the house.
“No I’m going now.” she smirked.
“What is your dad some sort of race car driver?”
“Well he isn’t my dad for a start.”
“Is he a race car driver?”
“No, he just…drives fast.” Autumn shrugged, grabbing her bag. She headed towards the stairs but Dustin stood in front of her.
“Wait, don’t I get a hug?” he asked. Autumn shrugged and put her arms around his neck, he pulled her against him and kissed her forehead, she looked up at him and gave him a quick peck on the lips before slipping past him and going down the stairs.
“My number’s on your phone.” He called after her.
Autumn went into the living room and stepped over about five people from her college before she reached Monica, she gave Monica a hug and thanked her for the invite then walked back to the hall and out of the front door.
A silver Mercedes was waiting at the end of the front garden, Red was in the drivers seat. Autumn slipped in next to him and he started the car, in mere seconds they were pulling away from the curb and heading home.
“Have fun?” Red asked as he inhaled.
“Lots.”
“Meet a boy?”
“How’d you know?” Autumn asked sarcastically, she knew that Dustin’s scent would be all over her.
“What’s his name?”
“Dustin Gully.”
“Is he cute?”
“Extremely"
“Did you have sex with him?”
“No.”
Red laughed, as he took a sharp left, almost turning the car in full circle then hit the accelerator, they were speeding along a small deserted road at almost one hundred miles an hour. Not that it bothered Autumn, she was too used to Red’s driving. They didn’t speak again until Red had stopped the car outside their house.
“Autumn I want you to go straight up to your room when we get in.” his face was serious,
“Why?”
“Hanson’s here, and he’s brought a friend.”
Autumn usually liked receiving the news that Red’s best vampire buddy Hanson had shown up, seeing as he had known her since she was five and wouldn’t hurt her, but the fact that he had brought a friend, not so much.
When you are the only human living in a vampire world things tend to get out of hand unless you know that you can trust said vampires, she knew she could trust Emelae, she knew she could trust Red, heck she could even trust Hanson, Dom, Lisa and Kyle, but anyone new was bad news.
Autumn walked into the house and ran straight up the stairs to her room without looking back at Red, she hoped that Hanson would come up and see her, she hadn’t seen him for at least three months.
She threw herself onto the black and green bean bags and let out a long sigh of relief, it was always good to be home. Autumn found that once lying down she didn’t want to get up again, the beanbags were so soft and she was in an extremely comfortable position, sleep sounded like the best idea.
End of part two.
Yeah btw its quite a long story....

Personally this is my favourite part so far.
Part Three.
Another roar erupted from the beast beneath him as it tore up the road, weaving around other vehicles; at 140 miles an hour, he was flying. His midnight blue coat rippled behind him making him look like a bat. “From hell” he joked with himself as he leant dangerously to his right, his knee scraping the floor as he spun around a corner. He kicked off from the ground and racked up some more power before speeding off down a side road. The bike’s speed never dipped below 80.
Signposts sped past him as white blurs; they consisted of the name of the town “Creeds” and a number of miles, the number was decreasing rapidly as the minutes ticked by. He pushed the bike faster, so he’d have to concentrate on the road. He couldn’t afford to be thinking about what he was doing, where he was going. If what he was doing was the biggest mistake of his life, leaving was your biggest mistake. Was his last thought before he pushed the bike towards 180 and was forced to concentrate on the sharp turns of the country road.
It wasn’t long before the first couple of houses were appearing, hurtling towards him through the dark night. He was forced to slow down, or risk being chased by the police. Then he would never be able to return. He dropped his speed to just over 50.
It wasn’t long before a dark shadow scarred the starry deep blue sky, looming above the town like some sort of monster. It was The Tower, home. A warm feeling flooded the pit of Jesse’s stomach at the sight of the monster, something he couldn’t describe, and something he hadn’t felt in seventeen years.
He stopped the bike at the base of the stone steps and dismounted it slowly, the windows of The Tower were dark, not that that bothered him, they usually were. As he climbed the steps the wind trailed fingers through his soot coloured hair. Which, after the trip on the bike, felt extremely pleasant.
He approached the heavy front door and pulled a key out from under his shirt where it had hung on a thick metal thread. He’d never taken it off. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, the hinges squealing in protest. He frowned, it was unlike Emelae to have let the hinges get dirty.
He entered the dark foyer and peered around, the table that ran around the base of the stairs held none of the usual clutter, as he approached he realised how dusty it was. Extremely unlike Red to not have his things strewn across it.
Jesse inhaled deeply, he detected Red and Emelae’s scent, there was even a hint of human mingling with it, so she was still with them. He then realised that the scent’s were extremely old. Days old? No. Months? He inhaled again and a small gasp escaped his pale lips. Years. The Tower had been empty for years.
Jesse ran to the stairs and took them two at a time until he reached his old room, it was completely empty, he could not find any warm feelings in The Tower, this wasn’t home. He was alone, and it made his silent heart ache, where as moments before it had been throbbing with anticipation and excitement.
“Where are you?” he whispered, leaning weakly against the wall and sliding down it until he was seated on the floor, his knees drawn up to his chin. He stroked the dusty floor with his long pale fingers, leaving wispy patterns in the thick dust. He looked up at the bay windows and noticed a white envelope on the window seat.
He dragged himself to his feet and crossed the room in under half a second, it took him less than that to rip open the envelope and read it’s contents.
Jesse
If you are reading this it means you have returned, I won’t know this yet but you cannot imagine how happy I will be! Please do not stop searching for us Jesse. We are currently living in Darlington, I can not stress how important it would be to me if you came to us, we can be a family Jesse, I’ve missed you so much.
But I suppose it is only fair to warn you that the human child will still be living with us, please do not be angry. We named her Autumn Jesse Dark, after you. She reminds me of you Jesse, she is beautiful. Please come and find us.
Emelae
X
Jesse felt tears sting his eyes, he could hear Emelae speaking the words she had wrote, and that just made him miss her even more. He spun on his heel and left the room, it took him less than two seconds to get back to his motorcycle. He mounted it and kicked off, throwing the bike into gear and speeding away through the night. He quickly settled into the rhythm of the beast beneath him and it wasn’t long until he was on the motorway, doing near on 150 miles per hour.
He barely heard his mobile ringing over the roar of the bike, he pulled it out of the back pocket of his leather trousers, and he held it to his ear and carried on driving at the same pace, with one hand on the handlebars.
“Yes?,”
“Where are you?” came a thick female voice, worry evident.
“This isn’t the best time Rexene.” Jesse hissed, dodging around a lorry.
“Slow down a bit and it will be” It did not surprise Jesse that Rexene knew he was on his bike and way over the speed limit.
“I can’t I need to get somewhere.”
“Where are you going Jesse?”
“Home.”
“What home? You never mentioned that.” Rexene sounded shocked, Jesse had joined Rexene and her coven one year after leaving Red and Emelae, he had never told them about his past, and if they asked he had simply said ‘there isn’t one’ and left it at that. The day before he had spent a lot of time thinking about Red and Emelae, which he did a lot, and as the sun set he had jumped on his bike and left the coven’s lair without telling the others where he was going.
“You would never understand Rexene.” Jesse whispered.
“No, I don’t. But where ever you are going let us know when you get there, we worry about you Jesse.”
“I will.” He hung up and slipped the phone back into his pocket, he leant over the handle bars and gave the bike more power, the first sign for Darlington whipped past and his stomach clenched, that letter had been written 17 years ago, would Emelae still feel the same way? Red hadn’t been mentioned in the letter. Did he hate him?
Jesse forced the bike to go faster, unable to dwell on these thoughts any longer; he zipped around a mini and smiled as the driver swore loudly, in fact now that he was listening a lot of the other drivers were swearing at him. He raised his hand and gave the finger to the drivers behind but he doubted they could see it, he was probably moving too fast.
He reached the edge of Darlington just as the sun was rising, he picked up their scent straight away, blowing towards him on a light eastward breeze, it was mingled with hundreds of other scents but Jesse could have probably picked it out of thousands if he’d needed to.
He sped through the town unable to quite stick to the appropriate speed limit, their scent was constantly getting stronger and he couldn’t help but shake with excitement, and fear. It took him under ten minutes to reach the point where the smell was the strongest, outside a two storey white house, it looked extremely big.
He dismounted his bike and walked cautiously up the path, he could smell Red and Emelae, but he could also smell the human. He was not looking forward to meeting her, seeing as she was the reason he had left.
He knocked on the door, holding his breath; he could hear someone moving behind it, it seemed to take another seventeen years for the handle to turn. When the door finally swung open he found that his lips wouldn’t move to form the words that would ask for Red or Emelae.
“Hello. It’s a bit early to be selling me insurance isn’t it?” the girl asked, ha funny, Jesse wanted to laugh but his body wouldn’t respond, this girl was stunning. He inhaled and couldn’t believe that this girl was the human Red had rescued, this was Autumn Jesse Dark, standing timidly in the doorway in a pair of baggy grey tracksuit bottoms and a sports bra with a faint flush tinting her perfect cheeks. Jesse wanted to move his eyes away from her face so he could properly look at the rest of her, but she was just…
“Shit” she whispered, “You’re a vampire aren’t you?”

Jesse nodded, was she afraid of him? Was there fear in her sapphire eyes? No it was merely caution. She peered over his shoulder at something in the distance.
“You better come inside, the suns rising, I’ll get Red for you.” She said taking a step back and holding the door open for him.
Red? Oh that was the reason that he was here, to see Red. Jesse took a few steps forward, his hand brushed Autumn’s stomach and he felt her tense, she quickly moved away from him and closed the door. Then went to the base of the stairs, Jesse stared after her, unable to look around.
“Red, Emelae, there is someone here for you,” she called.
Emelae appeared at the top of the stairs as Autumn walked into a room to his right, finally he could look elsewhere, he could look at Emelae. He fixed his gaze on her shocked face just as the little colour she had drained out of it. She reached the bottom of the stairs in seconds and ran towards him.
“Am I hallucinating?” she asked.
Jesse shook his head and held his arms wide, Emelae flew into them hugging him against her, she kissed his forehead and it felt as if she would never let go, it felt amazingly good to be in her arms again. It felt like home.
“Jesse,” she kept saying, over and over again, her voice getting a tad quieter each time. She finally let go and took a step back, holding his shoulders so she could get a proper look at him. Her face was streaked with tear trails.
Red’s head suddenly appeared over her shoulder, Jesse hadn’t heard him enter the room and gave a small gasp of surprise. His stomach clenched as Red started to laugh, Emelae took a step to the side and Red stumbled forward taking one of Jesse’s hands in both of his.
“What have you done to your hair boy?” Red asked, still laughing.
“What have you done to your life?” Jesse shot back. Staring around the room, finding the face that he knew was there, he locked eyes with Autumn.
“Touché” Red murmured, following Jesse’s gaze. “Autumn, this is Jesse Dark.” Red clapped a hand on the boys shoulder “I turned him. Jesse, this is Autumn Jesse Dark. I saved her.”
“Aren’t you the regular hero.” Autumn hissed, not taking her eyes off of Jesse, he was good looking, she could give him that. His soot coloured hair was cut into uneven layers and fell rather haphazardly around his face, he had a pure white side fringe that fell over one of his black eyes, his face was sharp but boyish, there was something stubborn about the way he held himself. He was dressed in leather trousers that were ripped at the knees, a black tight shirt and a long blue coat, a black studded dog collar hugged his neck.
“Good old Red aye?” he grinned and looked away from her just as Red pulled him into a suffocating bear hug. He hugged him back, squeezing him tight. Of course Red held on tighter. They finally let go of each other and both of them took a step back.
“You do look rather ridiculous though.” Red gave a small frown.
“I look fine.” Jesse growled, “Don’t I look fine?” he spun around so that he faced Autumn and held his arms out.
“Ten out of ten.” She winked, then strode across the hall and took tiny, delicate steps up the stairs, Jesse watched her go, unable to take his eyes off of her. Something hard hit his neck as soon as she was gone and he was slammed against the wall. He reached up and took Red’s wrist in his hands, trying to pull him away. Of course he was too strong, Jesse looked up into Red’s eyes.
“You listen to me, you lay one finger on Autumn and I will crush you.” Red hissed.
“Thought you were glad to have me back.” Jesse growled.
“I am, but I saw the way you looked at her.”
“I wouldn’t hurt her.” Jesse sounded disgusted.
“I didn’t say you were going to,” Red’s eyes were blazing, and Jesse gasped as he realized what Red was saying.
“I wasn’t thinking…” the hand on his throat tightened “So what if I was? It’s okay for other mutts to get their hands on her but…”
“They aren’t vampires Jesse, you realise that if you touch her you could kill her, a simple slip. That’s all it takes”
“So you don’t go near her?” Jesse didn’t really understand why he was even arguing about this, like it really mattered? Even if he was right, once a teenager always a teenager, Red had once said.
“I have learned to live with her, you have been with our kind for seventeen years, you could be as heavy handed as you liked there.”
“I won’t touch her.” Jesse finally gave in, and Red let go, he turned to face Emelae who had been sitting on the bottom step watching the confrontation with curious eyes. “We still have Jesse’s stuff don’t we?” Red asked her, as if nothing had happened.
“It’s all set up in the room at the very end of the pink corridor.” Emelae smiled, Jesse gave her a confused look “I always knew you would come back one day.”
“Thank you” Jesse gave a lopsided smile “I’m afraid I don’t know where the pink corridor is.”
“Go to the top of the stairs and turn right.” Emelae said gently. Apparently trying to make up for Red’s actions, as was her nature. Jesse walked to the stairs and ran his hand over Emelae’s shoulder giving it a small squeeze of affection.
He proceeded up the stairs and turned into the pink corridor, lined with black doors, he was heading to the one at the very end when a strong, sweet scent caught his attention. He stopped outside the third black door and moved closer to it, breathing in Autumn’s scent, he pressed his cheek against the door and listened to her slow, shallow breathing.
He took the doorknob and gently turned it then pushed the door open, he silently entered the room. It was extremely dark and a fringe of light was peeking through the curtains, he used the small amount to adjust his eyes to the dark. Autumn was in her bed, the black covers pulled up around her waist. She was lying on her back with her cheek pressed against her pillow she had one hand in front of her face, the other on her neck clutching the silver cross that she wore. His heart softened at the sight.
He walked around the room, padding gently on silent feet, a soft voice made him jump “Ever heard of personal space?” Jesse span around, Autumn was sitting up in her bed, a delicate hand pressed to her forehead.
“I’m sorry if I woke you.” Jesse whispered, backing up towards the door.
Autumn shook her head “I don’t really sleep anyway, and if I do it is extremely lightly.”
“Your hearing is good?” he asked curiously.
“Almost as good as yours, for instance I heard the handle turn.” He could just make out her smug smile.
He nodded “That is impressive. You have acquired vampire skills?”
“No, I’m perfectly human, I have just learnt to hear and see things that others don’t” She waved her hand and let it fall to the bed.
“Clever.” He acknowledged.
“I have to be”
“It is strange; you don’t seem at all surprised by the fact that I’m here.”
“Admittedly it isn’t every day I wake up to find a guy sneaking around my bedroom but no it did not surprise me.” She laid back, propping herself up on her elbows.
“It must seem bad to you, I have only just arrived and I’m already in your bedroom.” Jesse smirked.
“Well I do seem to have that effect on people.” Autumn gave a small yawn, which ruined the quirky remark ever so slightly.
“I’m sorry, I’m keeping you from your sleep.” Jesse sighed and began to back out of the room, but before he went he had one last thing to say “Please could you not mention this to Red?”
“He already knows.”
“Yes, but maybe it is best if we don’t bring the subject up.”
“You can understand why he would be worried can’t you?” Autumn asked, turning her body so that she faced Jesse.
For a moment Jesse thought that Autumn must have heard the confrontation between himself and Red, obviously that couldn’t have happened, he was surprised to realise that she must know Red extremely well. He didn’t say anything else to Autumn, just backed slowly out of her room and continued down the corridor to his own.

He entered the room and immediately felt warmed, it was so like his had been 17 years before, with it’s silver walls and black metal framed bed. Dark gothic wardrobe, silver chandelier and an old wooden rocking chair, which was set next to the bed.
Jesse went to the familiar chair and sat in it, resting his head against the firm wooden back, he hated the way that Autumn Jesse Dark seemed to hold a certain amount of power within both the vampire world and the human one, he could feel her warm, alluring aurora streaming off of her body when he was near her and it just drew him in, he was certain that he was not the only male that had ever felt it. For it wasn’t just her body that was so attractive, the way she spoke seemed, at times, so well educated, he could tell that she would have an answer for everything, the worst thing was that Red had deemed her completely off limits, which just made her more desirable.
But Jesse knew that it would be hard for him to go against Red, for he owed him too much. Regal Ebony Dark had always been like a father to Jesse, besides to even consider it Autumn would have to feel the same way, and he doubted that she often fell for any of the guys in her life, he stopped himself there, how could he really be thinking about the human in such a way? Did he seriously fancy her? School boy crush he mocked himself.
Jesse shrugged out of his coat and got to his feet, suddenly thirsty, and walked out of his room and along the corridor; he paused outside Autumn’s room but after a moment forced himself to carry on walking. When he reached the stairs he could smell something cooking, he followed the heavy aroma to a very bright and clean silver and black kitchen where Emelae was standing at a stove mixing some sort of human food concoction.
“Bit early for the pet to be feeding isn’t it?” Jesse asked.
Emelae turned to him, a scowl on her kind face “Be nice Jesse.”
He held up his hands “You know I’m only messing about.”
“What would she do if she heard you speak of her in such a way?” Emelae pointed her wooden spoon at him.
How threatening “My best guess is that I’d receive a slap and a few harsh words, delivered in such a way that I will be powerless to retaliate.”
“You read people well.” Emelae nodded and turned back to her mystic pot of human goodies. They stood in silence for a while, both of them milling over their own thoughts, it was a sweet comfortable silence that could have gone on forever.
“So why are you cooking?” Jesse asked.
“I enjoy it, plus Autumn will be awake soon.”
“She only went to bed an hour ago.”
“She only sleeps hours at a time.” Emelae shrugged. “And after she wakes up she will be awake for the rest of the day now.”
Jesse pushed himself off of the counter and covered the distance between himself and Emelae in seconds. He wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head on her shoulder. “I’ve missed you so much.” He whispered.
“If you are after blood you will have to wait until Red gets back from hunting.”
He pulled away and sat on the counter beside the stove “Hunting? Humans?” Jesse asked hopefully, his throat was beginning to ache.
“No, Deer and fox..”
“Stray cats, dogs, gerbils.” Jesse counted the animals off on his fingers as he said their names.
“Our existence has not become that pathetic.” Emelae snapped.
“Sheep, goats, chickens.” Jesse carried on.
“I find that he’s rather partial to the occasional scruffy, childish and down right annoying vampire” a soft, humoured voice came from the doorway. Jesse looked up to find Autumn standing there, her hair was damp and a silk dressing gown was hanging off of her thin frame and pulled in tightly at her waist.
“I prefer pretty little blonde humans.” He said, trying to force some sort of menace into his eyes and failing miserably when he couldn’t keep his eyes from straying over her body.
Autumn pretended to be thoughtful as she walked to the kitchen table and sat down in one of the silver coloured chairs. “A lot of the human boys I come across say that as well”
Jesse pulled a childish face “I suppose you know a lot of boys then?”
“Do you not know a lot of girls?” Autumn answered him with her own question.
“Many.” Jesse replied.
“What is the name of your latest squeeze then?”
He tapped his nose and turned to look at what Emelae was poking with her spoon. Truthfully he had been with only one girl during his 17 years away, he hadn’t loved her, it had been more like lust. She had been turned as a 15 year old model and her looks were amazing, her personality was bleak. The relationship had lasted just a month, before and after that he had just had random flings with girls from other covens, even a few guys.
“So what’s for breakfast?” Autumn asked.
“Mangled sick.” Jesse snorted.
“Scrambled eggs” Emelae scowled. Spooning the eggs onto a plate and setting them on the table in front of Autumn. Along with a knife and a fork, Autumn picked up her fork and stabbed the eggs, giving it a small twist and lifting up a small amount of the egg, she took a delicate bite and stabbed the egg again to repeat the process. Jesse was watching her intently. She looked up and caught his eyes for a second before looking back down. He gave a small smirk and looked up as Red entered the room, wearing an ankle length trench coat.
He gave Jesse a stern look before leaning down to give Autumn a swift kiss on the cheek. He straightened up and went to Emelae, pulling her against him and kissing her lips. She slipped her hands into the trench coat and pulled out two large vials of crimson liquid from one of the many pockets. She pulled away running her hand across his chest and pouring the vials into wine glasses. He hovered over her shoulder and gently kissed her neck. She cocked her head slightly, exposing more of her throat for him to nip and kiss. Jesse took a wine glass from Emelae’s hand as Red span her around and pinned her against the counter.
He sat opposite Autumn and sipped the red liquid from his glass, he winced slightly as the sharp taste of deer blood hit his tongue. It quenched his first slightly, but not as much as human blood would have. He sighed and looked at Autumn over his glass, “Do you really think I’m scruffy?”
Autumn gave a small laugh and set her fork on the side of her empty plate, she laced her fingers and leant closer to Jesse as a small groan came from the direction of Red and Emelae. “Yes.”
“Why?”
“You are wearing ripped trousers and your hair is a mess.”
“I don’t usually dress like this.” He frowned.
“First impressions are important.” She smirked,
“Did I not give you a good first impression?” Jesse took another gulp of blood and fixed Autumn with a soft gaze.
“No.” she threw an intense look back at him and pursed her lips. He knew what she was trying to convey, he hadn’t been around for twelve hours and he had already ended up in her bedroom and ogled at her the tiniest bit, to her he was just like any other guy.
Jesse dropped his gaze, unable to think of a come back, at least not one he could say with Red in the room. He drained his glass and got up to set it on the side, then pretended to be busy washing it. His thirst still wasn’t satisfied, and his throat was aching. A thin hand set a plate in the sink and her sweet scent brushed his nose sending a wave of venom into his mouth. He gritted his teeth and slowly turned, Autumn was standing centimetres in front of him, her light aroma drifting off of her damp hair.
He had left the kitchen in under two seconds, and got to his room in less than that time he sat in his rocking chair, breathing heavily. His thoughts were whirring as he remembered imagining running his lips along her glorious neck and… shit, he got to his feet and pulled on his coat.
He left his room and ran down the stairs, where Red shouted after him, and out onto the street where he jumped onto his motorbike and sped away. It had taken him under a minute to get out.
He had been kidding himself, thinking he could stay in a house with a human and drink animal blood. How did Red manage to stay sane when constantly surrounded by the thirst and her. Maybe the fact that he had raised her helped but how could he only drink animal blood, usually a glass of human blood would satisfy Jesse for half a day, but the animal blood made him want more and left a sour taste in his mouth. For 17 years he had lived with his own kind, and it had turned him into a monster.
Just 10 minutes later he had to stop, he was shaking too much; he was in an empty run down street where everyone was asleep at five am. He fell to his knees and rested his head in his hands, he couldn’t return home after that. He slowly stood up having realised what he had to do and pulled his mobile out of his pocket, he was about to dial Rexene when a light breeze brushed his hair he looked around to find a thin, teenage boy stumbling down the road, he’d apparently just had an extremely good night out.
The sandy haired boy came to a stop a few feet from Jesse “Hay, dude, you know where…” Jesse was suddenly standing in front of the boy, his hand around the back of the boy’s neck, shit, he lowered his head. “Dude what are you doing?” he breathed in the boys scent and a trail of venom trickled out of the corner of his mouth. He pressed his lips to the smooth skin of the boy’s throat.....

Something hard hit the side of Jesse’s head sending him flying across the pavement and crashing into a set of stairs. He sat up to find Red holding the head of the sandy haired boy, he was checking the boys neck. “Go straight home.” Red told him. Then let the boy go. Red turned and approached Jesse, his eyes were black his jaw clenched. He took the front of Jesse’s shirt and punched his stomach.
“What were you thinking boy?” Red growled, letting Jesse fall to the ground, clutching his stomach. That was the problem with vampire’s they hit really hard. Jesse stumbled to his feet and squared his shoulders. Red pulled back his arm and punched the side of Jesse’s head, he stumbled slightly but stayed standing.
“Red.” Jesse held up his hand as Red threw another punch but Jesse caught his fist, it was then that Red realised that tears were streaming Jesse’s face. Jesse let go of Red’s fist and sank to the floor. “I’m sorry”
“What were you thinking?”
“I’m a monster.” Jesse shook his head.
“Jesse.” Red’s voice softened, he crouched next to Jesse and put his arm around him. The young vampire shrank away.
“I can’t control it.” Jesse murmured.
“Bullshit.”
“I’m an animal Red, humans are my prey and I feed on them. It’s all I know.”
“That’s how you’ve spent 17 years of your life. But not anymore Jess, I’m here now.”
“But I hate them. I hate them and now you’re protecting them from me. You’re the good guy here Red, you’ve always been the hero and I’ve always looked up to you. And after that I’ll understand if you don’t want me back in your home.”
“I want you to come home Jesse,”
“I can’t live on animal blood.”
“I’m not letting you run off. The first time was a mistake that I said I would never make again.” Jesse looked up at Red.
“Why did you let me go?” he asked.
“You needed to grow up. When you stood there arguing with me on that day I could see the child in your eyes, I babied you too much.”
“And now I’m better off I suppose? A grown up irresponsible vampire.” Jesse spat.
“You can learn to live with it. If you want it enough.” Red cut off the conversation and pulled Jesse to his feet then walked him to his motorbike. “Get on the bike, and go for a drive. I’ll see you later Jesse.”
Jesse wiped his eyes and mounted the bike. “I’ll be home soon Red.”
He kicked his bike to life and sped off, heading for the edge of the town, leaving everything behind him. It wasn’t long before he was on the motorway, doing more than 180, it didn’t matter what Red said he couldn’t do it, not that he had even tried just like him to give it up, he veered off of the motorway down a small road, his knee scraping along the floor, when he straightened the bike again his knee was bleeding but it soon healed.
The road was thin and full of sharp curves, there was a deep cavern to his right and a hill to his left the right of the road was protected by a thin wooden barrier, so at 180 miles an hour he had to concentrate hard to get around the bends, it felt good to have the wind ripping at his hair and pulling at his scruffy clothes. It felt like he was running away again, it felt safe, he was too used to running. A thought occurred to him, he could run, Red didn’t have his number and he was moving too fast for his scent to settle, he could…
Jesse suddenly lost control of the bike; it veered dangerously to the right and shot through the barrier. For a moment it felt like he was flying, but his bike was hurtling towards the rocky ground, when it hit the tires burst and the bike fell to it’s side and Jesse was thrown off, he tried to grab onto something to stop his descent but the rocks came loose and the plants had little strength. He was rolling over and over and the ground was slashing at his skin. He ended up in a bloody heap at the bottom of the cavern, he was thirsty, the sun was beating down and the air was a lot hotter than it had been when he had drove out. His whole body hurt.
He got shakily to his feet and looked around for his bike, of course it was broken, he didn’t bother to pick it up, he didn’t have much strength as it was. He looked up at the steep incline in front of him and his throat sent a spasm of pain through his body. He’d only had a glass of animal blood he needed something else. He sat in the shade of a small tree, and pulled out his mobile. He dialled a number and put it to his ear.
“Jesse!”
“Rexene.” Jesse sighed, and leant back against the tree.
“What’s wrong?”
“I need blood.”
“Isn’t there enough where you are?” she laughed.
“Rexene I’m currently at the bottom of a cavern, just outside Darlington, the sun is hot, I am cut and bleeding, so no there isn’t enough blood.” Even when he was in pain he could put sarcasm into his voice.
“Shit, jeez Jess I let you out of my sight for less than a day and you get yourself in trouble. You were on your bike weren’t you?”
“Just bring me enough blood to last me the rest of this month,”
“So you are still going home?”
“Yes. Look Rex, I’m about an hour outside of Darlington, you should smell my blood if you come along the motorway”
“I’ll be there within the hour Jess” Rexene disconnected.
Jesse hugged his stomach as another spasm of pain hit him, he gritted his teeth and clenched his fists against his sides, the next hour would be the longest one in his life.
∞
Rexene Freeze was used to being gawked at, and she liked the feel of it. She wore clothes to emphasize her curves, for example, today she wore a tight red corset and tight black trousers. Her hair was clipped up and curled strands fell from either side of her head. She had stopped her white, topless Porsche at a set of lights and she could feel the guys in the truck next to her ogling at her.
She didn’t feel like flirting, she was just outside Darlington and she could smell Jesse’s blood on the wind, when the lights changed she hit the accelerator and spun the car down a small, narrow road. The car was too wide for her to be able to drive too fast, another wash of his scent rushed over her and she stopped the car. She felt as if she needed to be faster, it had taken her 45 minutes to collect enough blood and get this far and she knew Jesse had been suffering the whole time.
She cared about the kid like he was her younger brother, there had never been anything intimate between them, and they had always been best mates. She jumped out of the car taking a duffel bag off of the passenger seat and ran down the road; she reached a brake in the barrier in seconds and looked down the steep incline. She could see Jesse at the bottom; he was curled into a ball under a small tree.
She began to run down the slope, slipping and sliding on the treacherous path. She landed at the bottom and broke into a run. She slid to a stop in front of Jesse and ran her cool hand over his hot face, “Shit Jess,” she whispered. Jesse opened his eyes and slowly pushed himself into a seated position he leant heavily against the tree.
“Bring back any memories?” he asked in a husky voice. He was evidently trying to cover up how bad he actually was. But Rexene could see his hunger in his eyes. The real torture, it was an indescribable feeling, the hunger a vampire had to go through.
Rexene thought for a moment “This is how we met.” She pulled a blood bag out of the duffel bag and pushed it towards Jesse, he picked it up and bit into it, greedily pouring the sweet blood down his throat. He closed his eyes as the relief flooded him and his deeper wounds healed.
When he had finished the bag he threw the empty casing aside and got to his feet, he pulled Rexene into a hug, lifting her off of the ground. “What would I do without you?” he asked her.
“You’d be dead.” She pulled away and held the boy at arms length “Are you coming back with me?”
Jesse shook his head “I have to go home,”

“Autumn” Emelae shouted up the stairs “Someone here for you.”
Autumn appeared at the top of the stairs, she was wearing a short cornflower blue skirt and a black vest top. She was bare foot and her hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail. She wasn’t wearing any makeup but it wasn’t exactly like she needed to. The usual silver cross hung loosely around her neck.
“So much for the postman” she smiled as she padded down the stairs. Dustin was standing beside Emelae, he had previously been preoccupied by looking at her elaborate green Victorian style dress but when Autumn appeared he had been drawn to her, now he was watching her every step as she came towards him.
Autumn was finding it equally hard to look away from Dustin, he was wearing tight black jeans with a loose silver belt and a tight fitting red top under a white open shirt with its sleeves rolled up. His hair was messy and wind swept, the look suited him.
“Postman aye?” he smirked, running his hand through his hair. Then shoving it into his pocket.
“He says nice things.” Autumn shrugged then asked “What are you doing here?”
“Just felt like it, I have nothing better to do.”
Autumn started walking towards the stairs and Dustin fell into step beside her. “So I’m your last resort am I?”
“I didn’t say I’d tried anything different before I came here.” He shrugged and put his hand at the base of her spine as if guiding her. She turned into her room and sat on her bed, folding her legs beneath her.
“Make yourself comfortable.”
Dustin moved to the bed and sat next to her, turning his body so he was mostly facing her, he was leaning so close that she could smell him. He smelt like lynx Africa mixed with something else, something masculine, alluring. Autumn leant forward slightly, and let out a long slow breath.
“Still have nothing better to do?”
Dustin put his hand on her arm, holding her still as he leant closer, pressing his nose to hers “I think I found something to be here for.” He whispered, letting his gentle breath brush her lips. She put her hands on the mattress and pushed herself up so her lips pressed against his, he opened his mouth and slid his tongue between her lips.
She pulled away, giving his lower lip a playful nip, a smile played around her lips. She sat back, propping herself up on her elbows, Dustin leant over her, putting his hands either side of her neck. She arched her neck as if to kiss him then quickly moved back again, she winked and sat up, pushing Dustin back.
“Tease.” He snapped.
“You love it.”
He shook his head “I’d love it more if you’d just kiss me again.”
Autumn smirked, she loved this, playful flirting with a gorgeous guy, it wasn’t going anywhere, it was just a bit of fun. At least she thought so; maybe it could turn into something serious, but she doubted it, Dustin wasn’t the type of guy you had a serious relationship with.
“Am I not allowed to just sit and enjoy the view?” Autumn put her hands in her lap and leant forward, she turned her head so she was looking out of the window.
Dustin followed her gaze “Oh you meant that view.”
“Why what did you think I meant?” Autumn asked innocently.
“Cheeky cow.”
“Gullible pig.”
“Foul mouthed *****”
“You love it.” Autumn pouted.
“I’m getting fed up with hearing you say that.”
“Bite me.”
Dustin grabbed Autumn around the waist and lifted her off of the bed, he dumped her onto the bean bags then fell on top of her. He held her wrists together in one hand, and then put his lips against her throat.
“You mean like this?”
“Figure of speech!” Autumn cried just as her door creaked open. They both looked up.
“Please don’t let me interrupt.” Jesse chuckled.
“What the hell happened to you?” Autumn asked, squirming out from underneath Dustin and jumping to her feet, she straightened out her skirt with a few self-conscious tugs and ran a delicate hand through her hair.
“I fell down a rocky hill.” Jesse shrugged, Autumn was close to believing it, his clothes were covered in small tears and spots of blood, his eyes looked slightly sunken and his hair was all over the place. Autumn couldn’t stop herself from moving forward and pulling him into a tight hug.
Jesse was shocked at first, so much so that he couldn’t move; Autumn had wrapped one arm around his waist and the other around his neck and was holding him against her, after a few moments he put his arms around her, hugging her back. She smelt like peaches, and her skin was incredibly soft, his stomach clenched.
She finally let go and took a step back, for one of the first times in her life she had nothing to say. Neither did Jesse, he was staring at her blankly, evidently waiting for an explanation, not that Autumn was going to give one, it would sound stupid if she said ‘I just felt like doing it’
Jesse looked over Autumn’s shoulder at the good looking boy standing behind her, he caught Jesse’s eye “You look like shit” he commented.
Jesse inhaled, “You smell like shit.”
Dustin frowned and put a possessive hand on Autumn’s shoulder, “Shouldn’t you be going off to get changed?” he asked.
“No, I like to look this shabby.” Jesse said sarcastically.
“Shabby, so you agree?” Autumn looked up at him from beneath her long lashes, and have a small wink.
Jesse bit his lower lip, not able to think of anything to say, Autumn seemed to have that effect on him. “I better go and get changed” Jesse said stupidly, he caught Dustin grinning over Autumn’s shoulder as he backed out of the room and headed down the corridor.
Why had he even bothered to go in there? Oh yeah, he’d heard Autumn say ‘bite me’ then scuffling, was it his fault that he had the curiosity of a cat?

Just found this yesterday and read the whole thing and I have just one question:
[QUOTE=Waste;65374
Black sofas were spread around the room, curved to fit neatly against the wall, there was a glass table that curved around the stairs, only broken where the stairs started, various items were strewn over the table, books and pens, sheets of paper, DVDs, CDs and a black Raven that watched him with narrowed black eyes.[/QUOTE]
What happened to the Raven?
lol, just kidding^^ Great story I like it very much so far, can't wait for more!

At three pm Dustin finally left, and Autumn waved him out of the door with a quick kiss. She turned around intending to return to her room when her breath caught in her throat, Jesse was standing at the top of the stairs. He was wearing a pair of black, loose fitting jeans and a loose white shirt. He had a towel around his neck that he was rubbing against his damp hair.
He grinned when he caught her looking and she quickly slipped her eyes away from him, usually she would have winked, or given a flirty wave but there was something about the way he had smiled that had caused her to become embarrassed. She could feel the sprinkle of a flush on her cheeks.
Jesse let the towel fall either side of his neck and descended the stairs, abducting his arms; he flashed another smile “Do I still look shabby?” he asked, coming to a stop a few feet in front of Autumn.
“You look clean.” Autumn acknowledged.
Jesse pouted “Thanks, I think.”
“Autumn.” Red’s voice came from the direction of the living room; she looked around to see him coming towards her slipping a small mobile into his pocket. “Go to your room.” His tone of voice implied that it wasn’t a suggestion.
“Why?” Autumn squared her shoulders.
“Hanson’s friend is…”
The front door swung open and a tall well built man with thick black hair stepped lightly into the room, his eyes were large with red iris’s, Autumn recognised the man as Don, the stranger Hanson had brought with him on his last visit. She had only met him briefly that time, as it was never entirely safe for her to hang around with Red’s ‘customers’. Even though his business sold animal blood to vampires some of his visitors weren’t entirely in control of themselves.
“Good afternoon Red. Autumn.” He nodded to both of them, ignoring Jesse.
“Well, it was” Autumn quipped, placing a hand on her hip. Jesse mentally winced, even when confronted by an apparent threat she still couldn’t keep her mouth shut.
“I think you should go to your room Autumn, give me and our friend some privacy.” Red’s voice was slightly strained; Don must have noticed it as he gave a small smile. Autumn felt a cold hand on her arm, and followed Jesse’s pull, he let go of her at the bottom of the stairs and split off towards the kitchen, Autumn didn’t need to glance over her shoulder to know that Don was still watching her.
She turned into her room and picked her phone off the side, she had two texts waiting for her, one from Monica inviting her out at the weekend and one from Dustin inviting her out the next night, which was a Friday.
She threw her phone back onto the side and spread herself out across her bed; she could smell Dustin on the sheets and found it slightly disconcerting. As if he was still in the room. She got off of the bed and looked around the room then blushed when she gave a sigh of relief at finding nothing hiding in the dark corners. No ghouls, no bogymen, no vampires.
“That colour suits your cheeks.” A gravely voice came from beside her, she looked around, no there were no vampire’s in the corners of her room, just one, standing at her door.
Don took a few steps forward, his huge frame blocked out the light from the hall, throwing a shadow across her room. She involuntarily took a small step back.
“A lot of things suit me.” Autumn gave a smile.
Don began to walk around he room “Flirtatious, even when you are afraid.”
“Who say’s I’m afraid?” she was slowly turning, keeping her eyes locked on Don and making sure that the bean bags separated them, it was obvious what he planned to do for she had been in this situation at least five times before. Red normally came to ward off any attacker…
“Red has gone out,” Don grinned.
Crap “That’s nice for him.” Autumn smiled again.
“That smile, it’s stunning.”
“I know.”
Don was suddenly standing in front of her, having leapt over the bean bags and taken the final few steps towards her in seconds; he put his thumb and forefinger along her collar bone and pushed her back against the wall.
“So vain.”
“I have good reason to be.” Autumn said, unable to keep her voice from shaking.
He slowly shook his head “Unbelievable” he put the thumb of his other hand under her chin and tilted her head up slightly. “Your staring death in the face, yet you still have the nerve to keep that attitude” He ran the thumb of his free hand along her jaw line and tilted her head up slightly, exposing her neck some more.
“You love it.” She murmured.
“I love your smell.” He bowed his head, putting his lips close to her neck.
“Red will kill you.”
Don pulled back “Finally, some fear!” he exclaimed.
“Autumn!” someone yelled, then Don was gone, Jesse had sent him flying across the room and straight through the door, he was on his feet in seconds, a snarl splitting his face. He ran at Jesse, and Autumn found it unbelievable that Jesse had been able to lift him, the guy was huge.
Jesse threw himself at the vampire wrapping his arms around Don’s waist and bundling him to the floor; he got to his feet and danced away before Don could get up. He crouched in front of Autumn, between her and Don.
“I’ve been around forty years longer than you Don, think about what you do before you do it.” Jesse growled. Don drew himself up to his full height, apparently trying to look intimidating. “Empty muscles” Jesse shook his head. Don glowered at Jesse before exiting the room, muttering something about whores being tasteless.
Jesse turned to Autumn, she was leaning heavily against the wall, her face masked with fear and worry, Jesse locked his eyes with hers, it took her mere seconds to compose herself, before looking up at Jesse, who stumbled forward and pulled her into a tight hug.
“I’m fine. I don’t need a hug.” She said, trying to push him away.
“Yeah but I do.” He whispered, pulling her tighter.
“Were you worried?” Autumn asked.
“I almost ripped him into pieces, you almost died”
“Happens everyday” Jesse pulled away and looked down at her his face slightly baffled “I live with vampires.” Autumn explained.
“Red wouldn’t hurt you.” She looked up at him, a shine in her blue eyes, questioning him. He hugged her again and his stomach clenched when she hugged him back “I wouldn’t hurt you.” He whispered. “That’s a promise,” he was pretty sure that he was over the worst of it, now that he had a stock of human blood. He loved the feel of her soft body against him and even though her smell lured him in it was in a way that made him want to keep her alive, just so he could share moments like this with her.
He phone vibrated on the side, Jesse glanced at it “Dustin is calling you.”
Autumn pulled away and picked up the phone, swift, elegant. No one would guess she had just had a near death experience. She answered the phone with a smooth hello and sat on her bed, pulling her legs underneath her.
“Dinner? You paying?” Jesse caught her eye and raised a thin brow; Autumn pulled a face, “Are you picking me up?” Jesse widened his eyes as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “I’ll see you tomorrow then.” Autumn disconnected and set the phone aside, she looked up at Jesse. “What?” she asked.
“You like to be in control don’t you?” Jesse asked.
“I like people to know where they stand.” Autumn smirked,
“So the answer to my question is yes then?” he came forward and crouched in front of her, resting his chin on the mattress.
“I’m not that controlling.”
“Lies.”
“Prove it.”
“He called you to arrange a date and you ended up arranging everything, he’s paying and picking you up!” Autumn put her hand against his cheek and pushed his head to the side.
“I think I deserve it.” She winked. Jesse kept his head to the side, leaning his cheek against the bed, Autumn absentmindedly brushed her fingers through his thick, soot coloured hair.
“Yes, you do.” Jesse whispered, closing his eyes.
Autumn drew her hand away “Why do you say that?”
He looked up at her, kind eyes resting on her gaze “You nearly died, you deserve a night out.” He winked.
“Then it is not bad of me to be controlling.” Autumn smirked and got off of the bed, she went to her wardrobe and flung the doors wide. “He is taking me to Ferns Restaurant tomorrow night, what should I wear?” she mused.

“Don’t ask me, that’s the gay friends job.” Jesse’s voice came from behind her, Autumn felt her breath catch in her throat, she hadn’t realised that he was so close.
She turned to face him “Can’t you be gay? Just for tonight?” she asked.
“Why me? You have girlfriends don’t you?”
“They aren’t here now are they?”
“So if I leave, I won’t have to…”
“Jesse! Your starting to make me feel so unwanted.” Autumn complained. “I was nearly killed and you don’t even care enough to help me pick out an outfit for my date.”
“Don’t go pulling that out on me! You seem to be pretty over your near death.” Jesse pointed at her. “Besides, helping with outfits is the best friends job. Call your best friend.”
“I think you deserve to have best friend status seeing as you saved me.” Autumn pouted.
“My simply saving you does not make me a best friend.” But maybe becoming her best friend is the closest I will get to her. He clenched his fist.
”Forgive me for wanting to spend time with you.”
Jesse looked up, only to find himself held in her eyes “Now why would you want to do that?”
“You don’t?”
“I do, but Red won’t approve.”
“Screw Red, I need a guy best friend.” Autumn winked.
“Still, don’t you think it is a bit early to be trying on outfits?”
Autumn blushed “No.”
“You are excited aren’t you?” he smirked.
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me, you can’t wait for this date,” Jesse prodded her shoulder, the action was not meant to be harmful, just annoying.
“I can.” Autumn pouted, turning her back on him to hide her flushed face.
“Then why do you want to start preparing for it now?”
“I…” Autumn bit her lip, was it wrong to say that she just wanted a reason to keep Jesse with her? Yes. “Do I need a reason?”
“Yes.” Jesse said it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Fine, you can help me pick an outfit tomorrow then.” Autumn said, turning sharply and heading out of the wardrobe, she closed the doors behind her, leaving Jesse inside. She sat on her bean bags, facing away from her wardrobe, waiting for Jesse to come out.
“Autumn?” a strained voice came from the doorway, she looked up, Red was standing there, a drawn expression on his pale face. He rushed into the room and pulled her into a tight hug before she could respond. When he pulled away he ran his hands over her neck then looked down at her, worry twisting his face.
“Why don’t you just ask if I am ok?” Autumn sighed.
“Are you ok?” Red gave her a meaningful look.
“Tip top, thanks for asking.” she frowned.
He inhaled “Where’s Jesse?”
“Here.” The wardrobe doors creaked open and Jesse slid neatly into the room.
Red gave Autumn a puzzled look “I’m not even going to ask.”
“Red if I were you I’d be extremely worried,” Jesse pointed at Autumn, “That girl has too many clothes.”
Red frowned “Of course you would be the expert?” He straightened up, but there was more than humour in his eyes as he studied Jesse. Jesse must have seen it, as he did not respond. Red’s gaze returned to Autumn, who was still sitting elegantly on the beanbags. “Well are you going to tell me why I can smell both Don and Jesse all over you?”
“You know why you can smell Don.” Autumn said quietly, but of course Red was only worried about the part where Jesse was concerned “Jesse saved me”
“That doesn’t fully explain it.” Red pressed,
“I gave her a hug to make her feel better.” Jesse said, coming forward and standing beside Red. “The girl was about to have a mental break down.”
“No need for the jokes Jesse.” Autumn frowned.
“Who said I was joking?”
“’The girl was about to have a mental breakdown’”
“You weren’t?”
Autumn’s eyes narrowed, why did she suddenly feel like a little kid? Oh yeah, she’d just asked a 90 year old vampire to help her pick out an outfit for her date. She felt a faint blush rise to her cheeks again, why did she blush so often when Jesse was around?
“I’ll see you at dinner.” Red said before walking out of the room, apparently satisfied that she wasn’t going to start running around massacring the town for a few drops of blood.
“Sorry.” Jesse muttered.
“What for?” Autumn brushed the apology aside; she’d never really been any good at accepting them.
“Red?” Emelae crept into the kitchen; Red was standing opposite the fridge leaning casually against the side. He was wearing a tattered pair of washed out blue jeans and a tight long sleeved black top, neatly shaped around his sculpted arms. Emelae moved to stand in front of him, the hem of her pale pink dress rippling around her feet. She reached out and touched his shoulder, but he shrugged her off of him and turned away.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, slipping her slim arms around his waist and hugging herself against his firm back. She rested her head between his shoulder blades, “It’s Jesse isn’t it?”
“Partly.” Red whispered.
Emelae sighed and forced him to turn around; he traced his fingertips lightly over the sides of her thin waist, hugged by the corset part of her dress. He slipped his thumbs under the ribbon at the back of it, like he had so many times before when she wore such dresses. “Autumn? You’re concerned about her as well?” Emelae asked.
“I’m more worried about Autumn, vampires aren’t the humans best friend” he pulled her against him.
“What about us? Aren’t we her friends?”
“We love her.”
“Jesse could love her.” Emelae whispered.
“That’s what I’m afraid of.” He growled, his hands tightening slightly against her waist.
“I meant as a friend.” Emelae snapped, pulling away sharply.
“You must be blind.”
“Have you seen Dustin?” She asked smoothly, “There is something there I think” Emelae fixed Red with her amber eyes, behind the fierceness he could see her doubt.
“Have you seen Jesse?” Red shot back, Emelae slid her eyes away from him “So you have noticed.”
“Of course I noticed, I noticed the moment I met him, he was even covered in blood and I could tell what he had grown into and would continue to become...”
“You think he looks better now?” Red frowned.
“… Just like I knew from the moment I saw Autumn what she would become. Yes Regal he looks much better now!” she continued, an irritated edge rising into her voice. “I worry about her too, but Jesse is mature enough to watch his movements around her, when, not if, when they become close friends she will remain safe.”
“Do you think it is inevitable?”
“As inevitable as you and I.” She whispered, pulling herself back into his arms, he rested his chin against the top of her head and gently stroked the back of her neck with his hand. “I promise you Regal, it isn’t anything to worry about.”
“I hope you’re right,” he curved his finger under her chin and lifted her head so he could press his lips briefly against hers.

Midnight. The point when the vampire was supposedly most alive. Jesse was sitting in his room, gazing out of his window, nothing lively about him. His body was aching for the speed that only a motorbike could give him, shame his was still bashed up at the bottom of a valley somewhere. He drew in a heavy breath, without his bike he had nothing to keep his mind off of things, things like blood and Autumn, Autumn’s blo… he stopped himself.
Jesse slowly got to his feet, his throat was starting to give a dull ache; he went to the door of his room and pulled it open, as he walked down the corridor Autumn came out of her room almost walking straight into him. He reached out and took her shoulders to stop himself from colliding with her. She looked up at him from under her long blonde lashes, and he quickly jumped back as her sweet scent tickled his noise and a slick of venom slipped over his tongue.
“I’m sorry, am I really that menacing?” Autumn snapped her teeth at him, and turned away with a smile curving her lips. Jesse waited until she had descended the stairs before he allowed himself to breath again. After a few long breaths he headed to the kitchen, Red was standing by the cupboard in the corner, Jesse knew that beyond door was a small room with a secret door at the back that opened into a freezer room, where the blood was kept.
Jesse went to the cupboard door, ignoring Red; he opened it and stepped inside. He pulled open the door at the back, just as Red spoke “What do you think Autumn will do when she finds out that you drink human blood?”
“She won’t” Jesse murmured, crouching to take a bag of blood from the duffel bag, he had thrown into the freezer room earlier.
“Think you can keep it a secret?”
“Animal blood isn’t enough for me, this blood is taken from a morgue, it’s this or I kill live humans.” Jesse straightened up and closed the door then walked out of the cupboard, Red was holding a pint glass out to him. He bit a small hole in the top of the bag and poured its contents into the glass.
“Just be careful, if you insist on drinking that, I don’t want you hurting Autumn.”
“You worry too much old man.” Jesse took a gulp of blood and settled into one of the kitchen chairs.
“Old man?” Red scoffed, sliding into the chair across the table from Jesse. “I’d watch what you say.”
“Are you going to kill me?” Jesse raised an eyebrow.
“Are you doubting my ability to?”
“No, you could kill me quite easily, it’s your ability to catch me that I doubt.” He drained his glass, the feeling of the fresh blood running through his veins was indescribable, because a vampire is dead they need other peoples blood to function, they have no blood of their own so if they do not drink blood their muscles and healing capabilities eventually stop working, but the vampire won’t die. It will live in a paralysed state.
“You lost your motorbike didn’t you?” Red asked as Jesse brushed past him to wash out his glass.
“Yes and I would rather not talk about it.”
“I brought you that bike.” Red mused, tapping his fingers rhythmically on the table.
“I know.”
“And you’ve broken it, shows how much you love me”
“Red I’ve had it for over seventeen years” Jesse frowned, “It’s a miracle that it didn’t brake before.”
“I suppose” Red sighed, he looked up at Jesse. “You know for a moment there you sounded like your old self.”
“What? Childish and completely irresponsible?” he snorted.
“I miss the days when you were like that.”
“I thought I still was.” Jesse chuckled, and then gave a small wave as he turned out of the room.
Red sighed, when he had first changed Jesse childish and irresponsible was the only way he could have been described, but as the years grew Jesse was put through a number of indescribable things and the childishness slowly went from his eyes. Red had hoped that bringing Autumn to live with them would help Jesse forget his past, but it had just sent him away, and now when Red looked into the boys eyes all of his former self was gone, his personality had been rounded and hardened by the years he had spent with a real coven.
It wasn’t long before morning came, to a vampire the change from morning to night and back took an extremely short time, even one year was short. When a vampire could live for thousands of year’s time wasn’t something that was worried about.
Jesse was lying on his bed tapping his fingers against the mattress; he had his eyes closed and was imagining that he was riding, he could almost feel a cold wind ripping over his skin as he surged forward on a beautiful monster of a motorbike. If his motorbike weren’t lying in an unfixable heap he would have gone out on it, but his imagination suited just fine. In his mind he felt two thin arms wrap around his waist, when he glanced behind him Autumn was sitting on the back of the bike, her head resting between his shoulder blades…
Jesse sat up, cutting off the fantasy before it went to far. The clock on his dresser said it was 11 am; he must have been in his fantasy world for at least an hour. He got to his feet and pulled on some fresh clothes, a baggy white shirt that had a silhouette of a child holding a balloon on it and a pair of tight black jeans, he pulled on a pair of white boots.
Jesse walked out of the room and down the hall, pausing outside Autumn’s room, he listened for a moment and could hear her ruffling about inside. He didn’t go in, he was hungry. Jesse went to the stairs and descended slowly, he entered the kitchen where Emelae was slicing something on the chopping board.
“What are you making now?” Jesse asked as he went to the cupboard.
“Chicken pie for Autumn’s lunch.” She sounded proud of herself, Jesse came out of the cupboard clutching a bag of blood, he poured it into a pint glass and took a large gulp, Emelae gave him a reproachful look when the smell touched her nose.
“Does Red know?”
“Red knows everything.” Emelae nodded, taking this as a good enough answer, and went back to chopping carrots.
Jesse didn’t hang about; he downed the blood and went into the hall. He was heading to the front door when Autumn called his name he stopped and turned smoothly, she was at the top of the stairs, wearing a pair of baggy tracksuit bottoms and a blue t-shirt that was a bit too small for her and revealed a thin slice of her pale stomach.
“Where are you going?” She asked.
“See if I can find a place to buy a new bike.”
“Want a lift?”
“You aren’t old enough to drive” Jesse frowned.
“I have a chauffeur who drives a limo, and I bet he knows a bike place.” Autumn smirked.
Jesse looked up when Red came out of the living room, “You actually spoil this girl” he shook his head.
“She deserves it. Now did I hear you talking about getting a new bike?” Red asked.
“Yes…”
Red dipped his hand into the pocket of his black jeans and pulled out a wad of £50 notes, he held them out to Jesse. “That should cover the cost of a new one.”
Jesse took the notes “Seriously? Red there’s over 10 000 pounds here.”
“I’m not aloud to spoil you as well?”
“No, this is fine. Spoiling is defiantly something I could get used to.” Jesse smiled and tucked the wad into his pocket. “Right let’s go then.” Jesse said, looking up at Autumn.
“Give me two seconds to put some jeans on.” She ran to her room.
“Is it ok for me to go out with her?” Jesse asked Red.
“Why not? You did just feed right?” Red gave a small shrug “Just be careful” He locked eyes with Jesse, that one look conveyed everything he meant by ‘be careful’ including the fact that if anything happened to her he would personally break Jesse’s legs, before Red gave a small smile before walking back towards the living room. Jesse looked up at the sound of footsteps descending the stairs, in about five minutes Autumn had changed into a tight pair of blue hipsters, a tight white shirt, put on some mascara and tied her hair back. Jesse’s stomach clenched.

“Right I called Jason, he’s bringing a car round.” Autumn said smugly.
“What no limo?” Jesse pretended to be upset.
“I thought it would be better to get a car, seeing as you are used to smaller things.” Autumn smirked.
“Gee thanks.”
Autumn brushed past him and Jesse noticed a sweet, soapy scent curling off of her skin, he turned and followed her out of the front door, a sleek black Mercedes was waiting for them. Autumn waited by the door of the car, watching Jesse expectantly. He approached her and raised an eyebrow “You’re kidding right?” In reply Autumn held out her hand for Jesse to take. He shook his head but still opened the door for her, “You are too used to being pampered” he muttered as he took her hand and helped her into the car. He then closed the door and went around the other side, he slipped in and leant back against the cool leather, Autumn told Jason to drive to the best motorbike shop he knew and then, as the car pulled away from the curb, she turned to Jesse.
“Actually I was just taking advantage of you.” She smirked.
“Do you do that to all your friends?”
“No, only my gay ones.”
Jesse scowled “I’m not gay.”
“Touchy.” Autumn formed her lips into a small O and winked, Jesse took in a long, slow breath, it was getting quite stuffy in the back of the Mercedes. He looked out of the window at the buildings that were whizzing past, they were mostly shops so he hoped they were getting close. He felt a warm hand on his arm and looked back to Autumn “Sorry” she mouthed.
“For what?” Jesse mouthed back.
“Being so annoying.” She shrugged her thin shoulders.
“You aren’t annoying, you are just very good at stunning me into silence” Jesse flashed a smile as the car slowed and finally stopped, sparing Autumn from having to answer.
“Here.” Jason’s low voice came from the front of the car.
“Thank you Jason” Autumn said politely.
“Yeah cheers.” Jesse slipped out of the car, he found himself standing in front of a large garage like building with it’s front shutter up and a small room attached to one side. There were at least twenty bikes outside the garage and even more inside, Jesse felt the corners of his mouth pull into a smile, his hands shook at the idea of riding away on one of those bikes, running.
Twenty minutes later Jesse was sitting on a sleek black Honda, a grin stretching across his face, he’d found it. He loved it. Autumn stood beside him, studying the bike with the eyes of a sceptic. She circled it twice before voicing her opinion “It’s ugly.”
Jesse frowned “You wont be saying it once you have had a ride.”
“You offering?”
“As long as you aren’t one of those girls who squeal a lot then yes.”
“Do I look like a girl who squeals a lot?” she pouted, Jesse looked her up and down, the truthful answer was yes. She had the blonde hair, the skinny body and the gorgeous blue eyes, in many ways she was one of those spoilt rotten girls that got everything she wanted, including guys. If he was thinking from a stereotypical viewpoint then she was defiantly a girl that would squeal, but of course he knew better than that, she wasn’t like that, her soft blue eyes held a certain fierceness, the way she spoke and held herself said ‘Come get me if you are brave enough’ well, thought Jesse, I’m defiantly brave enough.
“No.” Jesse replied after a second’s thought, Autumn noticed that all humour was gone, he wasn’t teasing her any more. “Get on then.” It wasn’t a suggestion.
Autumn turned and waved at Jason, indicating that he could go, she then approached the bike and swung one leg over it, she had to hold onto Jesse’s waist to keep from sliding right back off again, Geez it was uncomfortable. She wriggled slightly trying to find a more comfortable position and failing.
“You ready?” Jesse asked, there was no mistaking the smile in his voice.
“I think so.” Autumn squeaked, she was beginning to reconsider the whole ‘I don’t squeal’ thing. Jesse started the bike, kicked it into gear, shouted a quick ‘thank you’ to the guy he had paid out the money to and then Autumn was thrown backwards as the motorbike sped away. She tightened her grip around Jesse’s hard chest and just about managed to stay on the bike. She nearly shrieked but kept her lips pressed firmly together, not wanting to give Jesse the satisfaction. She felt the hair band rip out of her hair as Jesse accelerated. Fear and adrenaline was coursing through her veins, hadn’t Jesse gone off a cliff the last time he’d been on a motorbike? That thought made her hold on tighter and burrow her head into his back.
Jesse’s reactions were completely opposite to Autumns, he felt so alive. He could feel Autumn’s head against his back, her now free hair was stirring the air, sending her scent flowing over him, accompanied by unwelcome venom flowing into his mouth, her scent didn’t do that to Red and Emelae, it made him angry to think that he was still capable of killing her. He took one hand away, steering with one was easy for him, and pressed it against the back of Autumns clasped hands. She held him tighter, and he got the feeling that it wasn’t because she was going to fall off, it was because she wanted to hug him, but he slowed the bike just in case.
Autumn was going to scream, she’d been on the bike for at least 15 minutes, what was Jesse doing? Taking the long route home or something? She didn’t want to open her eyes to find out. She could feel Jesse’s cold hand on hers, it was supposed to be comforting, but it just made her feel worse, his hand over hers meant that he was only driving with one hand. Her legs ached from pressing against the bike too hard and she was sure that the blood flow in her arms was being cut off because she was holding onto his stone chest way too tightly, if he’d been human she was pretty sure that his rib cage would have been crushed, but because he was a vampire with super strength he probably didn’t realise that her hold on him was due to fear. Arrogant ice hard vampire!
“Jesse!” She shouted over the roar of the bike, pulling her head away from his back.
“Yeah?” He looked back at her over his shoulder, his eyes scanning her sickly white face, he was surprised to find that there was fear in her eyes.
“EYES ON THE ROAD!” Autumn screamed. Jesse’s head whipped around and he swerved around a small red car. Autumn took a few deep breaths before loosening her grip slightly. “Jesse?”
“Yes?” This time he didn’t turn, he kept his eyes ahead of him so as not to scare Autumn, it wasn’t like there was any danger of them crashing, they were going at 80 mph, which was extremely slow for him.
“Please tell me we are nearly home.” She sounded like she was going to be sick, worry ran through Jesse’s mind, had he made her ill? He quickly turned towards the house, they’d be home in just five minutes, he pushed the bike faster, make that three minutes.
When he finally stopped outside the house he heard Autumn let out a long rush of air, but she didn’t let go of his chest, he looked down and realised with a flash of guilt that her hands were pure white, he slowly eased her hands off of him and then dismounted, he put a hand on Autumn’s arm to steady her as she got off, she was shaking all over and pure white.
“Didn’t think you were a squealer.” Jesse teased. Autumn looked up at him, it seemed that all fear had ebbed out of her eyes, she was still shaking but maybe that was with anger.
“I didn’t scream did I?” Autumn asked acidly, pushing Jesse’s hand away. “But I had too many good reasons to.”
“I’m sorry.” Jesse murmured, his eyes scanning over her, her hair was windswept; which suited her amazingly well, and her skin was a pasty white but other than that she seemed fine, she was even well enough to be angry at him.
“Sorry doesn’t even cut it.” Autumn turned away and walked swiftly towards the house, leaving a dazzled Jesse standing by the motorbike, it amazed him, how quickly she had recovered. He slipped the motorbikes key into his pocket and then walked towards the house, Autumn had slammed the door so he had to take his keys out to get in. He slipped into the main hall to find that Autumn was back to her old self, standing with a copper haired boy at the base of the stairs.
“I’m so sorry Luke were you waiting long?” Her voice was smooth, her hand brushing through her hair. All hints of her previous anger gone, the girl could act, really well, either that or she wasn’t as pissed off as she had appeared to be. Jesse highly doubted the latter.
He put his door keys onto the side then pushed his hands into his pockets, he strolled across the room as if nothing had happened, “It’s ok, Emelae was showing me around while I waited, you have an amazing house.” Luke was saying as Jesse passed, Autumn narrowed her eyes fractionally in such a way that only a vampire could tell she was giving a dirty look. Great she was still angry with him.
Autumn watched Jesse go up the stairs then snapped her attention back to Luke as he opened his mouth to continue the conversation “I was wondering if you wanted to catch a movie tonight?”
“Ah” She dropped her shoulders slightly and bit her lip, Autumn knew how to play the ‘I wish I could’ card extremely well “I can’t I promised Dustin I’d go out with him tonight” she tried to force a hint of sadness into her voice.
“That’s cool, another time?” Luke shrugged it off.
“Sure.”
“I better go then.” Luke said before turning and walking towards the door.
“Call me?” Autumn asked as he touched the handle, he pushed open the door then winked at her as he turned to close it behind him.
Autumn let out a long sigh then turned and ascended the stairs, she walked a short distance down the pink corridor and then almost fell through the door of her room, she closed the door behind her and leant against it her eyes closed tightly as she tried to calm herself down, it was unusual that she found herself so unable to be composed, the bike ride had shaken her.
“You look…stressed.”
Her eyes snapped open, Jesse was sitting on her bed, his hands resting on his knees, and he gave her a small uncertain smile as he got to his feet.
“I am stressed, no thanks to you.” Autumn shot, composing herself as best she could.
Jesse frowned “Do you want a gay friend or not?” he winked and then held his hand up and flicked it forward; Autumn gave a small laugh that warmed Jesse’s stomach.
“I knew you were, you fancy Dustin don’t you?” she accused, her eyes narrow and shimmering with her smile.
“I prefer longer hair, and prettier bodies”
Autumn went to her wardrobe doors and pulled them open “Dustin will be here in about two hours.” She told Jesse as she selected a short jean skirt and a black off the shoulder long sleeved shirt, she closed the wardrobe doors so she could change.
Jesse sat back on the bed and ran a hand through his hair, he kept his eyes on the wardrobe doors as he waited for Autumn to re appear. Maybe he was being foolish; he couldn’t deny that he was getting involved with her. He was drawn to her, as if it were inevitable.

“Well?” Autumn asked as she emerged from the cupboard for the fourth time, Jesse looked up and once again his breath caught, every time she’d come out looking better, but this time she looked near on perfect. What she wore was plain, a long black and grey striped jumper that fell off of one shoulder and ended a few inches above her knee, but she had added a white gold bangle that matched the cross around her neck.
“You look…” he was speechless for a moment “Wonderful, I just hope Dustin wears something up to that standard.”
“What would someone up to this standard look like?” Autumn asked as she slipped her feet into a pair of silver heels.
Jesse smiled “I’ll show you” he said, getting to his feet and going to the door of the room “Give me a few minutes.” He disappeared from view.
Autumn frowned, what was he up to? she didn’t have time to fathom it out before he was back, he stood in her doorway dressed in a pair of black trousers and a grey shirt, he had a black bandana around his neck and he had styled his hair so that not a piece of it was in place, Autumn’s heart skipped a beat as he came forward.
“Is this worthy of you?” he asked.
Autumn bit her lip and sucked in a long breath “You look nice.” She finally said.
“Just nice? I’m insulted!” Jesse dropped his head, pretending to be upset, Autumn crossed the room and stopped a few feet in front of him.
“Fine, you look handsome,”
Jesse looked up a smile lighting his face “That’s better.” He stepped forward as an idea came to him, “Autumn, would you…Dance with me?” he asked.
Autumn laughed “There isn’t any music.” But she moved forward and put her arms around his neck anyway, Jesse felt himself tense as her scent hit him, he put his hands on her waist and let out a long breath before turning on the spot pulling her around with him, she hummed a sweet melody that just brought Jesse down harder, was this really happening? He wasn’t so sure. They turned slowly, and as they turned they moved fluidly around the room, there was no need for music because they flowed with their own beat that came to them easily as if they had listened to such a tune before.
Autumn was giddy and light headed she was going to be with Dustin in just half an hour but somehow this meant more to her, this moment. Jesse also seemed to be going through what she was, his eyes sparkled and he was high on her scent, which was the only reason he could think of for the next thing that happened, he fell. Autumn came with him and he landed on his back, Autumn’s hands either side of his head, her legs straddling his waist. He heard her take in a sharp breath, then his eyes met hers and he bit into his lower lip. He reached up and rested his cold hand on her cheek, moving the tips of his fingers into her hair. She moved her head down and he traced the fingers of his other hand up her neck, his thumb moved over her jaw line.
“Jesse.” She was slightly breathless, something was stirring in her stomach he had a feather light touch for such cold, rock hard skin that made her never want to forget it. She moved closer, resting her lower arms on the floor either side of his head, her nose skimmed his and she heard him gasp. She opened her mouth as if to say something when her bedroom door was pulled open, she quickly rolled to the side as he sat up. Autumn jumped to her feet, swaying slightly as she regained her senses.
“Dustin is here for you.” Red said, trying hard to keep the growl from his voice, his features were slightly strained as he tried to refrain from pulling his lips apart and bearing his teeth in a typical, possessive animal fashion.
“Oh, right.” Autumn said quickly, finger combing her hair and brushing the creases from her jumper/dress. She picked a silver bag off of the side and hurried out of the room, lingering in the doorway to give Jesse a long, almost regretful look. She went down the stairs and smiled at Dustin who was standing in the centre of the foyer, waiting. He was wearing tight black jeans, white boots, a white shirt, open to reveal tight black t-shirt, he looked amazing, just not as good as Jesse, she couldn’t help but think. He opened his arms to her and she stepped into them, he kissed her cheek but she didn’t return it, she could hear someone coming down the stairs.
Jesse let out a long breath as he watched Autumn leave with Dustin, he didn’t like the boy, but it wasn’t the same vile hate that he felt towards most humans, the emotion wasn’t something he completely understood it made him feel sick to his stomach, it wasn’t until he found himself wishing that he could brake Dustin’s neck that he recognised the emotion as jealousy.
He wasn’t surprised when he felt Red touch his shoulder, and even less surprised when he found himself in a heap at the bottom of the stairs, Red having pushed him, Jesse rolled over and glared up at his adopted father.
“I’m sorry Jesse.” Red whispered as he dropped to a seated position on the stairs, his head in his hands. “That was out of line.”
“It was, but I let something worse happen.” Jesse got to his feet and climbed the stairs.
Red looked up at him “What did you do?”
“It’s what she did.” Jesse chuckled then lowered himself to sit next to Red. “She is remarkable.”
“She is more than that, she’s like a daughter to me, if I lost her before it’s her time, I don’t know what I’d do.” Red admitted, “I’m sorry for having to say this Jesse, but you can’t have her.”
Jesse closed his eyes, he’d been waiting for that, Red’s words had hit him hard and fast, he rose to his feet “I need to go out.” He murmured before heading to the kitchen, he drank a pint of blood and then left the house. A sense of déjà vu overwhelmed him as he straddled his bike and drove off into the night.
∞
Autumn almost fell through the front door when she returned home, a giggle escaped her lips as she pulled Dustin in, he pressed his back against the door to close it, Autumn moved forward and kissed him then took his hands and pulled him towards the stairs, she was giggling and it was evident that she was tipsy, it was 1 am and Autumn had already noted that Jesse wasn’t in seeing as his bike wasn’t in the driveway, in a way this had disappointed her but then Dustin had reminded her of his presence.
They burst into her room and she fell back onto her beanbags, laughing and pulling off Dustin’s clothes, he took off her dress and pressed his lips to her collarbone, biting lightly. His hands were all over her but she found herself disappointed, he didn’t touch her like Jesse.
She fell asleep with him, curled up on the beanbags; they were both in their underwear, just their skin warming each other. Until another warmth touched Autumn’s face, a searing heat that brought with it the smell of smoke and a deep feeling of fear. Autumn sat up suddenly, Dustin was already awake, his fearful eyes fixed on the door.
“This can’t be real” he hissed. As orange flames licked the doorframe, sending a billow of smoke into the room, Autumn was choking, she could hear someone, somewhere calling for her, it sounded like Emelae.
“Dustin.” Autumn whimpered slightly as heated fear embraced her heart. “Dustin I can’t move.”
Dustin was already on his feet, he moved towards the flames then recoiled, giving a sharp intake of breath, he turned to look to Autumn, his eyes black. “I need to get out of here.” He didn’t choke as smoke ran over him, enveloping Autumn, causing her eyes to sting and her throat to sear. She began to choke, and rolled off of the beanbags, she pressed her body against the floor but the smoke was so thick that it even possessed the lowest part of the room.
“Dustin.” She rasped. She felt his surprisingly cold hands touch her arm, he pulled her up as she felt her eyes close. Dustin was struggling to pick her up, the heat had taken his energy, he could feel the flames at his back, burning his skin. The overwhelming heat was going to kill him, so he did the unforgivable; he left her, he ran to the window over the bed and broke through it.
When Dustin landed on the cool grass he was overwhelmed with relief, he heard a footfall come from just by his head and rolled onto his back. A man was standing over him, the light from the fire bringing out the copper in his dark hair “What happened? Where’s Autumn?” the man yelled.
“I couldn’t, I couldn’t save her.” Dustin was shaking his head.
“Red!” a voice came from further off, then running footsteps, Jesse reached them in seconds “Red why is the house burning? Where is Autumn?”
“She’s inside?” Emelae choked out.
“What? Why aren’t you in there!” Jesse began to run towards the house but Red took his wrist.
“You can’t go in there, the fire will kill you.”
“I don’t care Red! I didn’t care 90 years ago and I don’t care now!” Jesse cried.

“I don’t care Red! I didn’t care 90 years ago and I don’t care now!” Jesse cried, pulling away and running towards the burning house, flames were dancing behind most of the windows and were beginning to fringe the curtains of Autumn’s bedroom.
Jesse scaled the wall easily and swung himself into Autumn’s room, the fire cutting his arms like a knife. The walls of the room were burning and the smoke was thick, he cut off the airflow to his lungs to save breathing in smoke, he found Autumn curled up by the beanbags. Unconscious. The swells of heat were hitting his body like a battering ram but he ignored the pain, he went to Autumn and lifted her into his arms, her body seemed to weigh considerably more when he was under the influence of the deadly fire.
He was aware that his clothes were on fire in places but it wasn’t like he cared, he crossed the room with three quick strides, “Red!” he shouted out the window, Red appeared below him so he dropped Autumn out, Red caught her easily and set her on the ground. Jesse jumped onto the sill as something exploded behind him, the air pressure pushed him out, and he fell to the ground, possibly breaking a rib due to weakness. He rolled over and gasped in the cool air, he needed blood to heal his aching body.
He crawled to Autumn’s side and placed a cold hand on her cheek, “She’s ok isn’t she?” he asked. Sirens exploded to life a few miles away.
“I honestly don’t know, but we have to get away from here.” Red said quickly. “The authorities will want to treat us, and we can’t afford that.”
“Where are we going to go?” Dustin asked.
“You aren’t coming.” Jesse growled. “You can stay here you need treatment.”
“I can’t let a doctor look at me either.”
Red’s head snapped up, “What?”
“Red there isn’t the time.” Emelae said quickly, she scooped Autumn into her arms “We will have to go to the safe house.”
“There’s a safe house?” Jesse frowned, pulling himself to his feet and taking off his shirt to cover Autumn.
“Red built it when we first moved here, it isn’t far.”
“Why would we need a safe house?”
“Encase something like this happened, can you not smell it Jesse?” Red asked.
“Smell what?”
“The slayer’s sent.” Dustin hissed, they all looked at him.
“Vampire.” Red whispered, disbelief colouring his tone.
Jesse was shaking his head “That isn’t possible.” His mind was being pulled in too many directions, slayers? Dustin a vampire? Autumn’s life?
“I’m half vampire.” Dustin admitted “But as Emelae has already said there really isn’t time to discuss this now.”
Jesse glared at Dustin but still followed him and Red out of the grounds, they all ran through the night, cutting through the wind that blew the scent of the burning house onto them. Emelae was carrying Autumn, and it reminded her of the first time she had held her, her daughter was still a precious bundle whose life she was destined to always protect.
They stopped, after running for just 20 minutes, outside a small bungalow. Red unlocked the door and led them inside, the three men sat around a wooden table and Emelae disappeared down the corridor, she reappeared a few seconds later having put Autumn into one of the beds. She then went back to Autumn’s room carrying a glass of water, when she came back into the main room of the house the men were still sitting in silence. Each angry in their own right.
“Is she ok?” Jesse and Dustin asked together, and then glared at each other across the table.
“She’ll be fine. She’s sleeping fitfully as we speak, she woke long enough to drain the glass of water.” Emelae explained quickly.
“Dustin I would…” Red began, his voice turning into a growl.
“Red that can wait, there are more pressing issues don’t you think?” Emelae said, walking past the table and towards the kitchen “I only have animal blood I am afraid.”
“That’s fine.” Dustin was the only one to reply.
Red was busy taking deep breaths trying to calm himself, Emelae was right, there were more important things, like trying to find out who burned down their house. Before he could speak Jesse had cut in.
“That persons scent, I’ve smelt it before.”
Emelae nodded as she came back into the room and set a tray on the table carrying four pints of blood “As have I. But I didn’t realise then that it was a slayers son that I was smelling.”
“Who?” Red demanded.
“Luke” Emelae and Jesse whispered together.
“Autumn’s friend?” Red asked.
“No way.” Dustin hissed.
Red sighed deeply “We need someone to find where the slayers are, and then we can attack.”
“I can go,” Jesse offered “I am the fastest out of all of us.”
Autumn stirred, it felt as if the fire was burning in her throat, she slowly sat up as a glass of water was pushed into her hand; she looked up at Jesse, who sat at the end of her bed, as she drained the glass. She set it on the side then crawled to the end of the bed and pulled herself onto his lap, he put his arms around her and she leant her head against his shoulder, she could feel his cold skin through the grey shirt that she now wore “I wish you’d stop having near death experiences” he whispered.
“I’m just lucky that Dustin was there.” Her voice was rough and nowhere near the sweet musical tinkle that it had been hours before.
“Dustin?”
“He got me out.”
Jesse bit his lip “Yes he did.” He gently kissed her forehead, causing her body to tense “I just came in here to say goodbye, I’m leaving for about a day, day.”
“Where are you going?” Autumn asked.
“Slayers burnt down our house, we need to track them and seeing as I am the fastest…” he trailed off. Letting his words sink in.
“Slayers.” Autumn rolled the word over in her mouth. “Aren’t they just people?”
Jesse shook his head “No, they are trained to have sharper senses, they carry special weapons, they know how to kill us, and apparently there is a group of them in this town, the fire was just a warning Autumn. We have to find them and destroy them before they can attack again.”
“And is that where you come in?”
“Yes.”
Dread swelled in Autumn’s heart, she was aching all over but that couldn’t compare to the sudden pain in her chest “Jesse you can’t” she whispered, looking up into his eyes, trying to get the intensity of what she was feeling across. He moved his face closer to hers, so close that she could feel his breath brushing against her lips, his lips parted slightly as if to say something.
But his reply was cut short by the appearance of Dustin, who walked across the room and pulled Autumn off of Jesse’s lap and into a hug “I’m sorry.” He whispered.
“For what? You’re amazing.” She replied wrapping her arms around his neck, he lifted her up and cradled her against him, he gave Jesse a confused look. Jesse just shrugged.
“I’m going to get ready.” He said, as he walked past Dustin he let his fingers linger on Autumns back before whispering too quiet for Autumn to hear “I didn’t tell her.” Jesse walked down the dusty corridor and then into the light of the main room, Red and Emelae were sitting at the table talking in low voices “She’s awake, you don’t have to whisper.”
“Are you going now?” Red asked, taking in Jesse’s appearance, he was dressed completely in black leather other than the tight black shirt that he wore under his leather jacket; two hours had passed since they had arrived at the safe house.
“No better time than the present.”
“Be careful.” Emelae instructed. Jesse hugged her.
“I always am.”

(Sorry i'm so close to the end and i just wanna get this out now, tell me if im posting too often. Also please don't hate me after reading this section.xxx)
“Silver burns them and if it enters their blood stream it will block the veins and even a small amount of silver will eventually paralyse a vampire, but not kill them, to kill them with silver it has to penetrate the heart, if not by silver a vampire will never be dead if their body is still whole, remove their head from their body and they will cease to exist, and even then, just to make sure, a vampire’s body needs to be burned. Do you understand?” Alexandra asked Luke.
“I know mum.” He whispered, weighing the silver gun in his hands. “And if you want a vampire to suffer…”
“Like we do.” Luke’s older brother, William, added in.
“Like we do.” Luke nodded then continued “…you have to keep it in a dark room with no source of light that it’s eyes can use, to stop it from escaping either tie it up with silver inlaid bonds or reinforce the walls and doors of the room with silver. Then starve it, when it can no longer move burn it alive.”
“And what does silver do?” Alexandra asked.
“Burns like a bitch, and paralyses.” William said proudly.
“And when the vampire comes here?”
“We kill it.” Luke growled.
Alexandra whacked the back of Luke’s head “No.”
“We capture it, torture it…”
“Then kill it!” Luke finished William’s sentence.
“It will suffer for what its kin did to your father.” Alexandra growled.
A light flashed at the top of the street and Alexandra pressed a finger to her lips “It’s here.”
Luke felt a flutter of excitement in his stomach, the fire had flushed the vampires out and made them aware of the slayer’s presence, now all they needed was one of the vampires, then the rest would die. He watched with greedy eyes as the young man turned into the alley, don’t you look hard he thought, the man was dressed in leather, his pale face and white fringe being the only thing that really gave him away, he walked in a cat like crouch as he edged up the street, he was obviously aware that he was close to a slayer’s house.
Luke was on the roof of his two storey house, his mother and older brother either side of him, the plan had been set and was now in action, William tapped Luke’s leg twice then dropped down and landed at a crouch in front of the vampire, William's his red hair and pale skin the only thing visible, he was wearing a tank top and black leather trousers, the vampire jumped back, his lower lip pulled up and he let out a low growl.
“You shouldn’t have come alone leech,” William said.
“I didn’t come to fight, yet.” The bloodsucker spat. William produced his silver gun, Luke hoped that the vampire didn’t notice the oversized barrel, and aimed it at the vampire’s heart. To Luke’s surprise the vampire actually laughed, “You think that is any good?”
“You can dodge a bullet yes?”
The vampire snorted, “I can dodge net’s too.” Luke cursed, he’d noticed, he heard his mum shift position, she tapped his leg once, a sign that said ‘stay here’ she jumped off of the roof and landed neatly behind the vampire, she took out her wide barrelled gun and aimed it at him. He laughed again “Two nets? Intimidating.” How did he know? He hadn’t even turned around. Sonofabitch.
“Get out of this one vampire.” Alexandra hissed,
That was Luke’s signal, he shifted silently and took out his net gun, he aimed it down, if Alexandra was right the vampire would jump up to avoid the nets, that’s where Luke came in. There was also another marks man waiting with a silver bullet, somewhere. This bloodsucker wouldn’t escape them.
William let the barrel of his gun dip slightly, another signal, Luke got ready, Alexandra was ready, her finger on the trigger. She took in a long, audible breath, signal, and they fired. The vampire jumped up, “NOW” Alexandra screamed. The leech looked up and Luke just caught a fleeting moment of realisation crossing his face before firing. The net spun towards the vampire the centre of it hit his head, he cried out in pain as the silver embedded in it touched his skin, the rest of it carried on spinning until it had wrapped itself around his body, he fell to the ground, the net cocooning him. Luke jumped from the roof. Smiling, it had gone perfectly, the guns that his brother and mum had held had been unloaded, and only his gun had contained the shot that had taken the vampire down.
They approached the vampire, his arms were pinned to his sides, the net had twisted around his legs holding them together, and his whole body was twitching in pain as the silver burnt his skin. He was breathing heavily his eyes closed as he tried to control it. Alexandra kicked his side and he gasped, he was weak in his current state, every blow would feel like…death.
“You can get out of this easily enough.” Alexandra told the leech as she crouched by his side, she held a sliver blade against his throat, “Tell me where the rest of you are and I’ll end your pain” she pressed the blade against his skin and he sucked air in through his teeth.
“What vampire’s?” He asked.
William kicked his side. “Your family, you idiot.”
“I don’t have one.” the leech gasped.
Alexandra straightened up, “Take him inside.” She growled.
Luke laced his fingers through the net by the vampire’s head, making sure he had hold of a few hairs, he began to drag the leech towards their house. After a moment William joined in, the leech didn’t make a sound, suffering in silence.
They dragged Jesse up the stairs, each step making him feel as if someone had shot a burning cannonball through his body, he was just wishing that he could die when they opened a door to a black room and pulled him in, the light that spilled through the doorway was the only light source, it allowed Jesse to look around, the walls were painted black and there wasn’t a window, that was all he could really tell, he swallowed, feeling his throat sear, he was already weak. Luke cut the net off of Jesse’s head, but any attempt to move his body still caused too much pain so he couldn’t do anything to stop the slayer’s from slipping a leather strap, shaped to fit snugly over his jaw, around his mouth, stopping him from talking or biting. They then took a piece of black cloth and tied it over his eyes, Jesse’s world went suddenly, and disturbingly black, no light leaked through the blindfold and he felt himself beginning to panic, without his sight he was useless, it had never been so dark for him before.
He felt the net leave his body, but before the pain fully subsided he had been flipped over, his hands pulled behind his back handcuffed together, the cuff’s seared and cut into his skin, more silver, these slayer’s were rich. He was then pulled into a seated position and his back slammed against a hard wall, he was in the corner of a room as when he leant his head to one side the wall was there for him to lean against, one sentence was spoken by a rough male voice “A few days in here should help you remember those vampires” and then the door slammed, Jesse wasn’t sure what was more disconcerting, the fact that the blindfold prevented him from seeing, or the fact that even without the blindfold he was dead certain that the room would still be completely black.
After a while Jesse lost all sense of time, as far as he was concerned he had already died and gone to hell, this torture was not only hurting him physically, but bringing back his own memories that he had tried to lock away, this was not the first time that something like this had happened to him. The last time he had been a weak newborn and slayers hadn’t even been the ones to wound him, he tried hard to push the memory away but it kept coming back, overwhelming him, back then they hadn’t used a blindfold, just a gag to muffle his screams as they burnt him with the silver again and again. His body tensed and his wrists automatically pulled apart, causing them to press painfully against the handcuffs, the gag muffled his cry of pain and terror.

Autumn was pacing again, she couldn’t help it, Jesse had been gone for four days. As always Red, who pulled her into a hug and told her that it would be ok, cut her pacing short. She wriggled out of his strong arms and was instantly taken into Dustin’s who stroked her hair.
“He’ll be back soon.” He whispered.
“What if they caught him?” Autumn asked for the fifth time in two hours.
“They wouldn’t have.” Emelae cooed, it was amazing how her voice never sounded bored.
“They could have.” Autumn insisted.
“I know he’s your friend Autumn…” Red started.
“He isn’t just a friend,” Autumn said, a whimper creeping into her voice, he was so much more than a friend, so much better.
“Why don’t you lie down,” Dustin suggested “He’ll be back when you wake up.” Autumn was about to refuse when she caught Red’s reassuring eyes. She took in a deep breath “If he isn’t back by midnight will you look for him?” She asked.
“I’ll look for him” Dustin said, placing a hand on Autumn’s shoulder.
“Thank you.” She forced a smile and headed for her room.
Dustin slumped into a chair across the table from Red, Emelae sat to his right and handed him a pint of animal blood. They sat in silence for a while then “Can you eat human food?”
“I prefer blood.” Dustin said, he always kept his answers short.
“So you can?” Emelae pressed.
Dustin sighed, “Yes.”
“Why did you get involved with Autumn?” Red hissed. He’d been in a bad mood since the night of the fire.
“She lived in a house of vampires, I was curious.” Dustin shrugged.
“You could have stuck to being her friend!” Red’s voice rose slightly.
“I don’t think it is possibly for a guy to just be friends with that girl.”
Red’s laugh was humourless “Good answer”
In honesty Red was not paying much attention to anything, he was talking with Dustin for the sake of it, he was as worried as Autumn about the young vampire that was like a son to him. He stared out of the window at the full moon and his mind drifted.
He was Regal Ebony Dark, the vampire who was not yet known as Red, he watched as a young boy with tanned skin and sooty black hair ran from his father through a small town, he’d obviously done something to anger his dad. Regal found himself admiring the boy’s speed. The boy veered into a narrow alley, just below where Regal sat, poised on the roof. He dropped silently into the alley as the boy turned.
“Get back here boy!”
“Catch me first old man!” The young Jesse laughed and then turned and slammed into Regal’s chest. He bounced back onto the floor and looked up at Regal, Regal in turn studied the boy with an empty expression. The father came up behind his son and his hand struck the back of the boy’s head. The boy jumped to his feet, fists clenched, Regal found it amusing that this kid thought himself able to fight with his beefy father. The man ignored Regal and lashed out, slamming his sons head into the wall of the narrow alley, Jesse slid down the wall and wiped blood from his lip where his teeth had sunk through it. The man drew back his hand, ready to strike his son again, but Regal caught his wrist.
“Stop there, before your discipline turns to a severe case of abuse.” Regal felt himself growl.
“How dare you tell me how to discipline my son!” The man tried to pull his arm free but Regal kept his firm hold. He heard the boy gasp, as if standing up to his father was something people just didn’t do, Regal scanned the man’s appearance and found that he was in fact wearing quite decent clothes, meaning he was of some importance in this small town.
“You treat your son terribly sir.”
“Do you know who I am?”
“I couldn’t care less.” Regal cocked his head to the side ever so slightly.
“Who dares to speak to me in such a way?” The man pulled back and this time Regal let him go, the man was busy trying to regain his balance when Regal reached out and tapped his shoulder, he fell back, landing heavily on the uneven ground.
Regal stood over him “My name is Dark, Regal Ebony Dark.” He stepped over the pig of a man and walked towards the other end of the alley, he heard the young boy get to his feet and come after him.
“Wait!” he cried, Regal stopped, but did not turn.
“Go home kid.”
“Where are you going?”
“Anywhere.”
“I want to come with you Sir.” Regal turned and looked into the boys determined eyes. “I have nothing to go home to.”
“Jesse! Come here!” his father shouted.
“You have family, you have everything to go back for.” Regal whispered.
“I have him.” Jesse snapped.
Regal reached down to the boy and wiped a smear of blood from his face “I like you, your spirit is strong.”
Jesse looked away “I wouldn’t say that Sir, “
“When you no longer have anything to live for, then, and only then, can you join me.”
“When it comes to that, you will no longer be around. The old man has years left.”
“I’ll find you, and when I do, my companionship will be offered to you again. If you still want it, the choice will always be your own Jesse.”
“I’ll want it.” Something in Jesse’s eyes assured Regal of this truth. He turned and walked out of the alley without a backward glance.
“Red?” Emelae’s voice broke through to him.
He looked up “Yes?”
“Dustin just left, I thought you should know.”
Red was suddenly extremely alert “Thank you. Is Autumn awake?”
“No,”
Red got to his feet and pulled on his long black coat, the hem of it had been burnt by the fire “I’m going out, to hunt.” He said slowly.
Emelae pulled him into a tight embrace “Jesse is ok.” She promised him.
Dustin ran to his house and jumped into his jeep, it took him a moment to pull himself together before he slammed his foot onto the accelerator and sped off down the road with the windows rolled down, waiting for Jesse’s scent to cross his path. It was bizarre, how quickly he had become involved with Autumn’s family, he wasn’t so sure that he liked it, it just gave him something else to care about, and eventually lose.
He had been driving for just fifteen minutes when Jesse’s scent blew onto him and he took a sharp left into the next road, and then another, he followed the scent trail until it broke off, he eased the jeep to a standstill outside the house, it was two storey’s and the scent defiantly stopped outside, and he could defiantly smell Luke in the area. Dustin let out a low growl as he backed the jeep up and drove back towards the safe house, Autumn had been right. They had Jesse.
He stopped outside the house and threw himself out of the car, he took him seconds to reach the door, it felt good to be able to be his complete self around Autumn and her family, he went into the main room where Red was sitting in the corner, Emelae sitting on his lap her body curled against his chest. They both looked up, their eyes alert, waiting for what Dustin had to say.
“They have him.”
Emelae gave a small cry and Red was on his feet in seconds, holding his wife against his chest, Emelae pulled herself closer to him and he could feel her tears against his neck. “My Jesse, gone.” She whimpered.
“I don’t think they would have killed him.” Red murmured to her “They need our location,”
Emelae shook her head “Jesse would never…”
“Exactly, that is why we need to get him out.” Dustin put his fist into his hand. Red set Emelae down and then went to walk towards the door but she took the back of his shirt.
“No, it’s too dangerous, they can sense vampires. They’ll kill you before you get close.”
“They didn’t find Dustin.”
“I’m half human” Dustin reminded him.
“They have Jesse.” Red growled and went to pull away but a voice stopped him.
“Then let me go.” Autumn was standing in the doorway, wearing a fitted dark blue shirt and black jeans.

“No way.” Both Red and Emelae said together,
“If they can detect vampires then it’s the logical decision.” Autumn raised her chin slightly, her eyes scanning over Red’s expression, pleading with him.
“No Autumn.”
Autumn gave a small cry of frustration “Why did he have to go?”
Emelae shook her head and let out another whimper, unable to say anything, she was in her own personal hell, imagining all the things that they could do to him, and would do. She wished that he would just give in and tell them where his family hid, but of course he would never do that, he wasn’t just protecting her and Red now, but Autumn as well.
There were tears in Autumn’s eyes “Why would they do that to him, why torture him? Can’t he just do something that will make them kill him?”
“He won’t want to die that badly” Red whispered
“Why? I have heard many vampires tell me that they would be happy to die, why don’t they?”
“None of them have the will power, vampires do not die Autumn, our existence is too simple and minor for nature to have fashioned such a pleasure for us, we just…cease to exist, and we are too selfish to bring such a fate upon ourselves.” He moved to stand in front of Autumn and then reached up to touch her cheek “Jesse would never choose that, especially not after he has finally found somebody to be alive for.”
“Me?” the word came out so quietly that even Red barely heard it.
“He cares about you a lot.”
Tears spilled out of Autumn’s eyes as she moved into Red’s cold embrace “You have to let me go.”
“I can’t”
“It’s the only way, Red you know it’s the only way.”
Red blew out a long breath, his eyes rested on Emelae’s and after a long moment she nodded. He looked down at Autumn, “Go, take Dustin with you, bring Jesse back,” he ran a hand through her hair “And you, please, come back.”
“I will,” Autumn promised, she hugged herself closer to Red and stayed like that for a minute then pulled away and walked to Dustin’s side. He put a comforting arm around her. “We don’t have the time to waste.” Autumn hissed urgently, wanting to leave the house before Red changed his mind. Dustin didn’t reply, he just walked forward, pulling her alongside him.
Red and Emelae watched them go “Emelae.”
“Red.”
“I fear that we are sending her to her death.” His words were only heard by Emelae as Autumn and Dustin were just getting into the car.
“Dustin will protect her. Besides, if we went we would do no good.”
“If she dies…” Red started, but Emelae cut him off when a threat began to appear within his words.
“You will do nothing.” She turned to him and traced the shape of his shoulders with her delicate hands. “There are fates worse than death”
“Would you rather see her dead than be one of us?”
“To become one of us is to condemn her to a life of pain, so no, I would never want her to be like that.”
“I don’t want to lose her Emelae.”
“We won’t.” she promised.
Dustin pulled up outside the house, he looked to Autumn who was staring straight ahead of her, her teeth sinking into her lower lip. She’d been silent for the whole journey, and he knew what she must have been thinking, “Is he dead?” He reached over and covered her clenched hands with one of his.
“I have to go in alone.” She whispered.
“I know.”
“What if…”
“He wouldn’t have died, not when he has you.”
“Could he really care for me that much?” She looked at him, her eyes wide, tears glistening over the surface. Dustin swallowed.
“Autumn.” Her eyes quizzed him “Vampire’s don’t like fire.”
“Yes…”
“I’m half vampire.”
“Right.” Her tone of voice said ‘get to the point’
“I didn’t save you from that fire.”
Her mouth fell open slightly, her eyes wide with shock, then realisation “Jesse.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Doesn’t matter Dustin, not now.” She whispered, but her heart was pounding, Jesse, since he had come into her life everything had been Jesse. She opened the door, and slipped out onto the dark street, she went silently through the knee-high grass that covered the front garden and finally to the door of the house. Her plan? Improvisation.
She turned the handle, locked, surprise surprise. She glanced over her shoulder and nearly cried out when she found Dustin standing just a metre away. “Sorry” he hissed, moving forward and sliding a funny shaped piece of metal into the keyhole, the lock clicked. “I can’t come inside, there’s probably silver everywhere.” He said regretfully as he watched Autumn open the door and slide into the house. She closed the door behind her and found herself in a short, dark corridor. She let her eyes adjust to the light then went to the first door she could find and pushed it open, it was 3 am so the fact that no one was in the living room didn’t surprise her.
What did surprise her was the living room itself, it was dark but from what she could make out there were two sofas pressed against opposite walls, a wide window, a television a few coffee tables and a cabinet. These things sound usual, until you look closer, all of the surfaces were covered in small silver ornaments, glinting in the little light that came through the open window. The floor in the living room was tiled like in the hall, but every other tile was silver. Dustin was right not to have entered this house.
Autumn backed into the hall and went carefully to the stairs, she crept up them and sighed in relief when she reached the landing without stepping on a creaky floorboard. She looked around the landing, there was a lot more light due to a sky light in the ceiling, she was standing in a long corridor, a door at one end a large window at the other; six more doors were dotted along the corridor, how many led to bedrooms? Which one might lead to Jesse?
She noticed that the door at the very end of the corridor was painted black, the rest were white, and decided to try that one first, she put her hand on the handle and was reminded of a game of Russian roulette, opening this door could end everything, including her life. She pushed it open.
The room seemed to instantly absorb any light that the skylight gave the hall, once she had seen the room she knew that Jesse was in it, even before her eyes had rested on his frail body, leaning against the back wall. She couldn’t see his face properly there were two strips of black over it, it made her feel physically sick when she realised that one was a blindfold, the other a muzzle. Like a dog.
She ran forward, not caring how much noise her feet made on the floor. She fell to her knees in front of Jesse and reached out to him, but when she touched his cheek he shrank back, hitting his head on the wall, a small whimper came from behind the gag. She tried to reach around to untie the blindfold but he moved away again.
“It’s me.” She whispered.
He shook his head violently, bringing his knees against his chest, his whole body shook as he brought his hands up and wrapped them around his knees, horrible burns ringed his wrists.
“Jesse please, it’s me.” Autumn hated to have to use force but it was the only way to keep him still, she held his chin in one hand as she reached behind him and untied the gag and the blindfold. When she pulled away Jesse instantly put his hands to his eyes.
“Jesse, look at me.”
“No, anything but this, I wont look at you with her voice, any torture but this” his voice was pathetic, a low rasp that was barely audible. Autumn took his wrists, just below the burn marks, and pulled his hands away from his eyes.
“It’s me Jesse, it’s me.” She whispered, tears sliding down her cheeks when she looked upon his tortured face, black eyes sunken into his skull; deep shadows beneath them, fragile skin, cracked lips. He didn’t speak, but a low sob came from the back of his throat, Autumn pulled him forward putting his thin arms around her neck then wrapping her own around him, holding him close.
“I’m here now, they won’t hurt you.” She promised him, gently rocking her body, he was crying against her. Low pitiful sobs which eventually subsided to nothing after that he suddenly pulled away from her, his head slamming against the wall again.
“No. Go away” he hissed.
“Never.”
“I can’t” he swallowed a few times “get out…of here.”
She took a long look at him, it was true he was in no fit state to be moved, her stomach clenched, but she couldn’t leave him. She scanned his body again he needed blood, and then the answer came to her, the only way that they would both get out. She pulled her collar away from her neck.

Jesse was quick to realise what she was doing “No…I won’t”
He would, Autumn knew that in his state he probably had little self control, she leant closer, letting her breath brush over his face, he inhaled and she watched as a slick of venom rolled from the corner of his mouth.
“I won’t” he paused to take a shaky breath “turn you.”
“Jesse I’m not letting you go now, you either do it or die here and the second will never be an option”
“I can’t”
She pressed her neck against his lips “You saved me” she breathed in his ear “now let me save you.” When he still didn’t bite her Autumn eased herself away, until the tips of their noses touched, she scanned his face and then caught his eye before pressing her lips to his mouth, she parted his lips and slid her tongue between them moving her lips against his, she heard him groan and felt his cold fingers lace into her hair, she pulled away and he instantly pulled her closer, holding her still whilst he ran his lips down her throat, searching out the feel of a fresh pulse. “I love you.” The whisper escaped his lips before his teeth pierced the skin.
Autumn’s blood, the highest taboo, just like Autumn herself.
And now he had them both. Her blood sliding down his throat, her body in his arms, if he carried on drinking he would kill her but the blood was too sweet and brought too much relief to his tortured body. Her life depended on him, she had trusted her life to a monster. “IT’S GOING TO ESCAPE!”
Jesse blinked, It? Monster?
Jesse wasn’t a monster, this girl, hadn’t he just told her seconds before that he loved her? He pulled his head back, feeling her blood trickle from the corner of his mouth; he quickly checked for a pulse, it was there. He allowed himself to breath as he stood holding Autumn in his arms. He could hear people now, running down the corridor, he ran from the room, cradling Autumn in his arms.
Alexandra was running towards him, gun in hand, a real one this time, a real gun that shot silver bullets coated in silver shards, which would infiltrate his blood stream and paralyse him. Not that he cared. He ran forward, knocking Alexandra aside before she could shoot. He dodged a bullet shot by Luke, then another shot by William, then another shot by…like he cared. He was free. Now his only duty was to get Autumn out safely.
He ran towards the window at the end of the hall, he was a few mere feet away when a pain, like fire, exploded in the back of his right leg, he went down on one knee but gritted his teeth and rose again, his foot already going numb, he threw himself at the window, turning at the last second so none of the glass shards hit Autumn, his back hit the grass, then Dustin was at his side. It was all happening so fast that he barely had the time to comprehend it.
“Autumn?” he cried.
“Take her!” Jesse yelled. Dustin stooped and lifted Autumn into his arms, then Jesse was on his feet, more bullets were fired, Dustin cried out as one hit his arm but he carried on running towards the car, but a van pulled up, closer to him, he was about to push it over when the window was rolled down and a familiar white face looked out at him.
“Get in then!” Rexene shouted as the door at the back slid open, without asking questions Dustin and Jesse jumped into the back of the van, they were gone before the slayers had a chance to get out of the house.

(So newly written that this part doesnt yet have a name)
Red had lost count of the amount of times he had walked the length of the room, and he was about to do it again when the door burst open and Jesse’s friend Rexene came in, Red had phoned her a few moments after Autumn had left and her appearance meant that they had Jesse, Red felt himself smile but it soon faltered when he realized that she was carrying a small woman, Autumn. As Rexene walked swiftly past and headed to Autumn’s room Autumn’s head fell back revealing her bloodied neck and the crescent mark of a vampire bite. Emelae gasped, and Red cried out in rage. His face contorting into a mask of hatred, directed at the next person to walk through the door.
“JESSE DARK!” Red roared. The thin boy leant heavily against the doorframe, a bullet hole in his leg seeping blood, Autumn’s blood. He looked up at Red with watery eyes and took another unsteady step, his body was already close to complete paralysis, the silver in his veins preventing the blood from flowing; his willpower the only thing keeping him going. Red crossed the room in three strides and took the collar of Jesse’s shirt. “HOW DARE YOU!” Red threw him across the room, sending him through the table and into the wall. Jesse lay at the foot of the wall, his body refusing to move, Red began to walk towards him but someone took his arm.
“He has suffered enough” Emelae growled, Red span.
“CAN YOU NOT SEE…” Emelae slapped him, a neat flick of her wrist, knocking his head violently, he staggered slightly, unable to quite believe her strength, or that she had hit him for that matter.
“You listen to me Regal Ebony Dark! That boy” she pointed at Jesse “Has been through enough! I have seen the way you have been treating him and if it wasn’t for him I dare say Autumn would have died long before tonight,” her face was stone cold and she was standing still in a way that only a vampire could, her voice low and menacing as she held Red’s gaze “Do you not remember the first time you met that boy? I recall a time when you told me of how disgusted you were at the sight of that man striking his son, well you are the father now Regal and you disgust me!” she spat, then turned and stalked towards Jesse, crouching beside his still body and pulling him into her arms, she knew he could hear her “Your safe, I have you, we’ll have you moving soon enough” she didn’t look back at Red as she left the room and walked down the corridor.
Red dropped his head into his hands as Dustin limped into the room, supported by a young female with deep red hair and a thin face, she helped him sit and then nodded to Red before leaving again, Dustin couldn’t feel his arm, although he was half human the silver still had some effect on his body. He felt someone brush past him and looked up when a blonde male entered the room.
“Regal.” The man said, he had a strong jaw line and bright green eyes, his hair was chin length and parted at the side, usually most of it would be in his eyes but in this case a bright pink bunny clip held it back. He wore a white shirt and a pair of tattered black jeans with a black tutu and bright pink fingerless gloves.
Red looked up “Toulouse” he forced a small smile.
“Problems with the wife?” Toulouse asked, he pulled a chair around so the back was facing Red and then straddled it, his arms resting at the top of the chairs wooden backrest.
“Indeed.” Red quickly changed the subject “What are you doing here?”
“I was visiting Rexene’s coven when you called, and decided to come along for the ride, I’m guessing you’ll be wanting these slayers sorted out and I’m not one to miss out on the action.”
“You can’t hunt around here.” Dustin spoke quietly.
“I’m aware of that, but there are many other towns to hunt in” Toulouse shrugged.
“So how many have come?” Red asked, he seemed relaxed but Dustin could make out the tension in the line of his shoulders.
“There’s Rexene, Marie, Roland, I picked up Hanson on the way, and me.”
“Do you think nine of us will be enough? Provided that Dustin helps of course.” Both Red and Toulouse shifted their positions to look to Dustin.
“It would be ten, you missed out Autumn.” Dustin said,
Red growled “Autumn wont be a part of it.”
“Who says? You or her?” Dustin gave a light chuckle but wiped the smile away when he noticed the fierce look on Red’s face.
“Autumn? So you still have that girl then?” Toulouse mused.
“Yes and you wont be going near her.”
Dustin refrained from mentioning that the last thing Autumn would ever have to worry about again was how sweet a vampire found her blood.
Autumn slowly opened her eyes, the light was blinding and her body ached, it felt as if there was some sort of fire raging in the back of her throat. She gasped as her last memory came to her, she sat up suddenly, she was alone in her small room. She got out of bed, the silk nightdress that someone had dressed her in rippling over her body and falling into place as she shifted, a full length mirror stood by the door. She approached it cautiously and examined herself, she hadn’t changed much except that her body seemed so much clearer, and then she noticed, her cheeks were pale, they no longer held the blush that had once made her human.
She looked up when a thud came from beside her, then laughed lightly to herself when she realised that it hadn’t came from there at all, she took a few steps then stopped, and took a few steps back, startled by the speed she did it again. Forwards back, forwards. A sharp pain sliced the back of her throat and she gave a small cry, then recoiled at the thought of what she needed, blood. Not human blood, she amended, animal blood. She took a few steps forward and then backwards and then forwards again, she smiled to herself and left the room, the whole event having lasted just a few minutes. She paused in the corridor listening to voices, as clear and as loud as if coming from beside her, coming from the main room.
“So that’s the plan?” said an unfamiliar voice, sceptically, obviously male but with a feminine flick,
“Keep him safe, keep her safe, that’s the main idea isn’t it?” Dustin asked, sounding bored
“Dustin” Red’s voice, “this would be easier if you weren’t constantly undermining my words.”
“Encase you hadn’t noticed the words ‘kill the slayers’ crept in once or twice” another unfamiliar female voice.
“Right before ‘keep her safe’” Dustin seemed to point out, were they talking about her? Curiosity struck her.
Yet she was not attracted to them and the pull of the blood that she could get by going there but by a strong, sweet smell that came from a room further down the hall, she recognised it as if it had always been there, the name of it’s owner came to her easily as if she had smelled him before, yet, she supposed that she had. She had smelt it when he had held her…she smiled and walked towards the room, following Jesse’s scent.

10-13-2008, 07:36 PM
She edged into the room, a woman already present, sitting by the bed that Jesse’s body lay across, for the first time Autumn noticed the colours, the colours so much deeper and full than before that seemed to shout at her from every corner of the room. Including the woman’s lush green tank top. She turned when Autumn came closer, her eyes scanning over Jesse’s body.
“Is he ok?” she asked quietly, unable to look to the woman, she was too busy taking in the complete perfection of Jesse, she had never before noticed the way that each strand of his soot hair was a different shade of grey, the planes of his bare sculpted chest, his perfectly flawless skin only broken by the small crescent scar on his arm that she had never really noticed before.
“He has been paralysed by the silver, he’s been out a day so it shouldn’t be long now before he is moving again.” The woman’s voice was smart and sophisticated, “You are Autumn yes?”
Autumn nodded slowly her eyes still on Jesse.
“If he moves, it will be for you.” The woman said simply, putting a hand on Autumn’s shoulder, Autumn spun suddenly when she found that the hand was warm, she scanned the woman’s face, she was defiantly a vampire. She had a pale angled face with black curly hair and perfectly balanced features.
“Rexene Freeze.” She smiled.
“Autumn Jesse Dark.” Autumn replied.
“It is nice to finally meet you," Rexene took a long look at Jesse, “He can hear you.” She said before leaving the room. Autumn went to Jesse’s side and sat by him on the bed. Her hand tracing light patterns up his arm.
“Jesse.” She whispered. Then sighed, feeling stupid, she moved closer. “I…” she stopped, butterflies crowding her stomach, she didn’t like the feeling, she’d never been so nervous around a guy before, she didn’t know what to say, she could make a joke out of it, but that just didn’t seem right. “I suppose talking to you now would be like talking to someone in a coma.” She says, then is unsure of why she said it, she takes his hand, “I don’t know if you can feel me.” His hand tightened around hers “I guess that’s a yes.” She sighed, with her other hand she traced his jaw line. “Can you feel that?” no response.
Someone knocked on the door and Autumn looked round, Dustin walked into the room and pulled her to him, hugging her tighter than he would have dared if she were human “Is it possible that you could have become more beautiful?”
“No, I was perfect before” she feels Jesse’s hand relax slightly.
“I’m glad you haven’t lost that.” Dustin smiled.
“What?”
“Your ego.” He ruffled her hair “looks nice.” He teased.
“Bite me.”
“I would but it appears that someone else got there first.” Jesse’s hand tightened into a vice like hold, causing Autumn to wince slightly.
“Ah of course, your throat must be killing you.” Dustin gave her an apologetic look “It wasn’t the first thing I thought of when Rexene said you were awake.” He took her hand and pulled her to her feet, Jesse’s hand stopped her from going much further.
“Jesse.” Autumn hissed. He didn’t yield his hold. Dustin frowned.
“You have to share.” Dustin told him but he still held on, in fact his grip became fractionally tighter, Autumn realised that he wasn’t just holding on as a joke, he probably didn’t want her to go, and in fact she didn’t want to leave him. She sat back down on the bed and ran her hand through his hair.
“I’m here.” she whispered. Then gave Dustin an apologetic look “Could you bring…”
“Sure.” He sounded annoyed, his shoulders rising into a firm line as he left the room.
“You just had to piss him off didn’t you?” Autumn said, the corner of Jesse’s mouth twitched slightly. She moved her fingers over his lips “Can you feel that?” his hold on her hand loosened, and then he squeezed it once. Autumn took her hand away as Dustin came back in, he held out a pint of blood, Autumn took it and stared down at the red liquid, a knot forming in her stomach.
“You need it.” Dustin insisted. “Build your strength up for when we destroy the slayers.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“What time is it now?”
“Four pm.”
“What about Jesse?”
“With or without Jesse, Red thinks we have waited long enough, and we can not let them surprise us.”
Autumn nodded and then turned her attention back to the glass, she put her lips to the rim and let the blood touch them, the hunger grew and she couldn’t stop herself from taking a gulp of the blood then another, and another she drained the glass in seconds the feel of the cool liquid almost causing her to moan with pleasure. She looked up at Dustin, wide eyed, he laughed and wiped the corner of her mouth with his thumb. “It still aches” she complained.
“It always will. You just get used to it after a while.” Dustin sighed.
“Dustin!” a smooth female voice, not Rexene’s, called him and he excused himself, once he was out of the door Autumn turned back to Jesse.
“Did you hear that?” She asked “They are going to kill the slayer’s tonight, yet you stay like this.”
Jesse mentally sighed and cursed himself for getting into such a state. He couldn’t feel anything, it was as if he was just a mind, floating about with nothing to tie him down, except Autumn’s hand, he could feel, he could feel her touching him and hear her voice clearer than any other. It annoyed him that the others would fight without him, but that could not be helped. He was constantly working, trying to hunt down his body parts and move them. He felt Autumn’s fingers touch him again and it took him a moment to work out that she was running her fingers over his face and then tracing the outline of his lips. His body went cold, as it always did when she traced her hand over his skin.
When Dustin re entered the main room of the house he found Marie standing by the door, holding an envelope in her hand, Red stood close by holding Emelae gently, Toulouse was straddling a chair his eyes on Marie.
“What happened?” Dustin asked.
“I was just returning from the hunt, and this was under the wind screen wiper of Rexene’s van.” Marie explained, holding up the envelope, “It’s from the slayers, as you are in this with us we figured you would want to hear this as well.”
“How do you know it is from them?”
“It’s hardly a parking ticket.” Toulouse snorted.
Marie rolled her eyes at Toulouse “Don’t mind him.”
Dustin smiled “He can be a prat if he likes.”
Toulouse growled and went to stand but Rexene held his shoulder, keeping him in his seat. “It is addressed ‘dear bloodsuckers’” Marie explained after a brief glance in Toulouse’s direction.
“I suppose that makes sense.” Dustin nodded.
“Be cautious when you open it.” Red warned as Marie slid her finger along the top of the envelope and broke the seal, she pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it and then read aloud.
“Blood suckers,
We know where you are, and we know you want us dead. Revenge has always been strong in the still heart of the vampire, yet our hearts also hold a level of revenge that we have worked hard to bring to justice. You may want to know why we have targeted your family, well that is simple. One of you killed one of us, 17 years ago. His name was Luke. Do you remember him?
So you see why this fight must take place? We will see you soon, leeches.”

Red moved away from Emelae and snatched the letter from Marie, he read through it five times before ripping it into pieces smaller than confetti, he rubbed his temples as the pieces fell to the floor. “It’s my fault.”
“Yours?” Dustin frowned.
“I killed Luke.”
Dustin bit his lip “Ah.”
Emelae went to Red and wrapped her arms around his waist, “You didn’t know.” She put a hand against his hair and stroked it comfortingly. “We couldn’t keep her safe forever.”
“We…”
“Don’t you dare argue with me Regal.” Emelae snapped, pulling his head down so she could press her lips to his.
Red pulled away gently “I don’t think I ever will, you have a temper I never knew about.” He touched his nose to hers and then kissed her again.
“That is all very well but what do we do about it?” Toulouse spoke up as he rose to his feet “They could attack at any time.”
“Tonight, probably tonight.” Marie said.
“Then we are prepared?” Dustin asked.
“They cannot take us by surprise” Hanson shook his head from the corner of the room “We would hear them, smell them.”
Red dropped his head to Emelae’s shoulder and gently kissed her neck, he felt her fingers dig into his back as he ran his lips up her throat and then whispered in her ear “I give up.”
Emelae smiled as she realised the meaning behind his words “No hunting.”
“I want you more.” He kissed her cheek and then pulled away, he took her hand and began to lead her towards the hall.
“Where are you going? We have plans to make!” Someone called after them but Red wasn’t listening enough to think who, he answered with a simple wave over his shoulder as he pulled Emelae down the hall, towards a spare room, before he reached it he stopped outside Jesse’s room, and pulled Emelae against his side, they stood in the doorway and looked in on Autumn and Jesse, Jesse lying as still as marble on his bed, Autumn sitting by his side, one hand holding his whilst the other brushed through his hair.
“How is he?” Red asked.
Autumn looked up at Red, her piercing eyes searching his sharp features, she took in his copper hair and fully appreciated, for the first time, the hints of red that rippled through it. She didn’t smile; just dropped her gaze back to Jesse, there was no use in pretending in front of Red. “I heard Marie read the letter.”
“Autumn.” Emelae said quietly, eyes soft as she wriggled out of Red’s arms and went to Autumn, hugging her tightly. “There is nothing for you to fear.”
“There is everything for me to fear. This time tomorrow you could all be dead.” Autumn snapped, looking back to Jesse.
“We won’t leave you.” Red promised. “Who’s going to look after you if I’m not here?” he smiled.
“I am of course.” Autumn shot back, Jesse’s hand tightened and she felt grateful for the contact, like a connection between them.
“You will never stand alone” Red promised.
Autumn sighed “Go back to cloud nine.” She forced a smile “You two deserve that.”
She felt Emelae squeeze her shoulder “So do you,” she said quietly, her eyes flicking to Jesse before she left the room with Red. Once they had gone Autumn pulled her legs onto the bed, put her head onto Jesse’s chest and then curled up beside him. “Hurry back to me.” She whispered.
I’m trying Jesse thought frantically as he felt a cascade of light, tickling touches over his chest, he could only guess that she’d laid her head on him, he wanted so badly to reach her, and hold her there. Although he could now produce the smallest twitches of movement he still had about 3 or 4 more hours before he could even hope to pass as anything near fully functional. He could hear various plans being made in the main room, and as before the issue of keeping others safe came up often, not so much Autumn now but himself. They wanted someone to stay in his room and protect him, he hoped it would be Autumn, he needed her close.
Red laid with Emelae on the bed, tangled within her arms, he could feel her hands gently massaging his head, they’d spent hours together, hours of precious planning time. Yet he was glad he had spent it with her. He felt her hand trace gentle patterns up his chest and resisted the urge to take her waist and pull her on top of him again, he could spend eternity loving her but his duties prevented him from doing it physically. He sat up, and she rose with him, her arms still laced around him, he felt her cool cheek press against his throat as she murmured a sweet song.
He closed his eyes and allowed himself to drift on her words as he stroked his hand down her bare back. He felt her nails dig into his back as she finished her gently singing and whispered “Let this never end.”
“It has to.” Red replied. “We have our duties.”
“To Autumn.”
Red nodded “Yes and…” He was cut short by the shock of a loud explosion coming from the main room of the safe house. He jumped off of the bed and pulled on his pants and black tattered jeans, Emelae got up behind him and hastily clothed herself in a pair of black jeans and one of Red’s shirts, they exchanged a worried glance before leaving the room.
They reached the end of the hall in mere seconds to find Hanson, Marie, Dustin, Toulouse and Rexene lined against the wall, facing a large hole in the opposite one where at least nine people stood. There were three women, all tall and lean with muscled arms and dark hair held in high buns, and six men. The youngest were boys with red hair and green eyes, Red guessed that one was Luke, the other his brother. The slayers glowered at the vampires, keen eyes scanning the pale faces and bared teeth.
No one spoke, no one moved.
They stood like that for over five minutes before Red stepped forward, he scanned each human face in turn before he spoke “Leave us now and we will not harm you.”
A woman stepped forward from the slayers side, her eyes almost manic as she barked a laugh “Did you give that choice to my husband?”
“I don’t give choice’s to murderers.” Red snarled.
The woman drew a silver gun from her belt and weighed it in her hand before holding it out in front of her, her finger poised on the trigger. “Then a choice you do not have.” She growled as she pulled the trigger, Red dodged the bullet as the slayers charged, drawing their silver weapons.

(Thankyou for your comments, here's a part that i'm quite proud of)
Autumn rolled off of the bed and landed lightly on her feet, the shouts from the main room suggested a fight and she was itching to join it and avenge Jesse’s torture. She turned to Jesse and brushed her finger tips across his forehead, she watched as a spasm rolled down his arms in his attempt to move, three hours had passed since she had lain on his chest and gently sang to him, now her patience had worn thin.
“Jesse. I have to go.” she whispered. “No one will pass into the room, I promise you” she bent and kissed his forehead. “I can’t wait any longer.” Autumn turned to leave then felt a snag at the bottom of her dress, her breath came faster as she turned to find that Jesse’s hand clung to her, his arm having moved out towards her. “Move.” She hissed “Move again” a groan escaped his pale lips and Autumn felt a curl of joy in the pit of her stomach. She jumped onto the bed, straddling his waist she put her hands either side of his head “Jesse.”
Red took a slayers head and threw him across the room as another lunged at him, he dodged the blade that the slayer brandished and then whirled around. The man that stood before him threw out his arm sweeping the short sword through the air, Red moved to one side but wasn’t able to dodge a second blow from the blade in the mans other hand, it nicked his shoulder and sent a spasm of pain down his arm. Red growled and sent his fist crashing into the side of the mans head, throwing him to the floor and breaking his nose. He was soon back on his feet, his blonde hair spattered with blood. Red glanced around the room to check on Emelae before returning to face the slayer.
Emelae was fighting in such a way that it could almost be called dancing, her opponent appeared to be the oldest woman there, the one who had shot at Red, and she was also the most agile. Her moves flowed with Emelae’s instead of against them so that whenever Emelae tried to dodge out of the way the woman was there, already waiting, her gun ready to fire a shot that could prove fatal, as she fought to stay out of the way of the guns barrel Emelae tried to force herself to stay focused, she could hear the shouts and cries from both slayer and vampire and wasn’t sure that she was ready to face the consequences of the screams.
A sweep of the room would show the various fights that were playing out, Toulouse battling Luke, Hanson and William, Dustin defending Marie against two males. It would seem that both sides were equally matched but by the end of the first 30 minutes the slayers were slowing, they had underestimated the speed and skills of the vampires and it was showing, due to the quantity of sweat and blood that covered their bodies.
Jesse reached up and took the back of Autumn’s neck, rubbing gently with his thumb. He pulled her closer and took in a long slow breath through his nose, inhaling her scent. He stretched out his other arm and cupped the back of her shoulder “Autumn.” The word was barely audible, as if it rode on his breath. She brushed his hair from his face and touched her lips to his, she felt his lips part but pulled back before the kiss could deepen. He held onto her as his eyes flicked open, Autumn was left breathless as she gazed into the perfect, crystal lined beauty of his eyes. She felt his warm fingers press against her cheek.
“Look at what I have done to you.” His face softened.
“You have done nothing but make me feel beautiful.” Autumn whispered.
“You were beautiful before.”
Autumn shook her head as she got off of Jesse and stood, he sat up “That isn’t what I meant, before I met you I was not beautiful, I was a cheap imitation of what a beautiful girl should be,”
Jesse nodded as a smile flicked up the corner of his mouth “You had too much sex.”
Autumn laughed “I had too much sex.” She agreed, then her smile faded “But when I met you, I had no desire for that, no desire to flirt and flaunt, I wanted you.”
Jesse opened his mouth to reply when the sound of a body hitting the wall of the main room echoed through to them, he looked up “I almost forgot.” He rose to his feet and swayed slightly before falling back down, he pressed his palms against the mattress “I need blood.”
Autumn studied him for a moment, his defined muscles were empty of strength, hard to believe, she realised that with her pathetic amount of experience and his weakened state that they were merely sitting ducks. She went to walk to the door but he caught her wrist.
“Where do you think you are going?”
“You need blood or you can not fight, and Red needs you else he will fail, how else can we solve this problem?” she pulled from his grasp, proving how fragile he actually was.
“You can’t.”
“I have to.” she walked to the door and cautiously opened it, hearing Jesse trying to rise again but failing. She swept down the corridor and came to its end in seconds, she surveyed the almost unrecognisable wall, her keen eyes flicking over the various battles between slayer and vampire, as far as she could tell there were more slayers standing, how could slayers be winning against them? The worst sight was the blood, the crimson liquid splattered up walls and pooling on the floor, causing her throat to ache more than the smell of animal blood ever could. This was what froze her in place.
Her eyes flicked up to look directly opposite her, she gasped, taking in a lungful of the sweet and all too alluring scent, she had to lean on the wall to keep herself from falling to her knees with the need for it. Luke, the cause of her shock, stood opposite her. His silver gun raised, it’s barrel aimed at her chest, she shook her head as she took in the inevitability of it. How could she move when a step forward would have her on her knees and a step backwards would pin her in further?
“Luke, you were my friend.” She choked as she watched his finger touch the trigger.
Jesse rose to his feet again, gritting his teeth to try and draw energy, but again he fell. He growled and dug his hands into the mattress, tearing chunks from either side, it was then that he heard Autumn speak “Luke, you were my friend” her distress gave him his determination, he had no doubt that she was in trouble. He rose again, clenching his fists until his knuckles turned whiter than they already were. He stayed upright, wavering for milliseconds before he mustered his energy and leapt forward, sliding into the hall and whirling to find a scene of unmatched horror. Autumn staring down the barrel of a fatally aimed gun. “No.” Jesse cried as he ran forward.
Red looked up at the sound of Jesse’s voice and felt the pain of a silver dagger slashing at his side, he let his fist fire like a cannon at the slayer, propelling him across the room before focusing his eyes on the corridor. He hunched slightly as pain ricocheted down his left leg but no pain could pull him from what he saw. Jesse running towards Autumn as she stood opposite Luke, he had seconds to react, and it took less than a second for Jesse to push Autumn aside and face the barrel as Luke pulled the trigger, it could take Red a moment to dodge a speeding bullet, but how long would it take him to stop it?
End of part six.

Jesse, standing before him as the boy he once was, a man, hanging by the neck from a tree behind him. His body swaying with the gentle breeze, “So you are ready?” Regal asked.
“My own father couldn’t bare to look after me. What is there to show that you will?” The hopeful eyes of a boy, shrouded in doubt.
“There are not many of my kind around, and if you come to me then I shall never leave you. I promise you that Jesse.” I promise…
This is the scene that passed behind Red’s eyes as the bullet hit his chest and the pain exploded within him as his heart closed around the pure silver shell. He felt his body hit Jesse’s chest as it was thrown back with the force of the blow. He fell to the floor with Jesse and rolled onto his back as his body convulsed, surely he should be in pain now? The absence of pain reinforced what he already knew.
His vision blurred and he lost the feeling throughout his body but that didn’t stop him from hearing Autumn’s cry.
Jesse scrambled to his feet and pulled Autumn into his arms as she sobbed and tried to lunge at Red as he lay still on the floor, his eyes almost empty of emotion, Emelae was across the room but she reached them in seconds as everything around them began to lose it’s meaning. Emelae dropped to her knees and leant over Red, stroking his hair frantically.
“Red.” Emelae whispered “Red, Regal Ebony Dark if you don’t speak to me this instant I’ll…” she trailed off as her words gave over to sobs, Red’s eyes focused slightly as his lips parted.
“You scare me sometimes.” He murmured.
“You can’t leave me, you just can’t.”
“I have to Emelae.” Red’s eyes closed but he carried on taking in sharp, pointless breaths. Emelae rested her forehead against his, allowing her tears to join his on his cheeks.
“You don’t you can stay,” she said quickly “Why are you leaving me?”
“I had to save my son, for Autumn.”
Jesse felt his throat clench as he choked feebly into Autumn’s hair, he felt her burrow her face into his neck as she cried. When he looked up he found that the room had fallen still, all of them watching.
“I love you.” Red whispered, Emelae leant closer and they shared their last kiss.
Jesse let go of Autumn and lowered her carefully to the floor where she sat with her arms wrapped around her knees as she bowed her head and cried. He looked away from her and his eyes fixed on Luke. He growled as he took a few steps into the room and then stooped to trail his hands through the blood that stained the floor, he licked the blood from his hands and then straightened to face Luke as the room did not dare to breath. Lightning flicked from his eyes to Luke’s and in that second they both knew what had to happen.

I present to you the last part of their story.
“If you fall…” Jesse started, but Luke finished his sentence.
“My men will leave.” Luke promised.
No one moved, no one spoke. Who would dare to go against what the two men said? From the view of the onlookers there was nothing that gave off more energy and hate than Luke and Jesse.
Luke threw aside his gun and readied his fists in front of his face “As your race killed my father, I have killed yours” he grinned.
“And as you have burnt my mothers heart with sorrow I shall do the same to yours. May her grief never end.” Jesse also readied himself, crouching slightly and bringing his fists up. They watched each other for just a minute before Luke lunged forward.
It took Jesse longer than it usually would to see the punch and then move to the side and dodge it, his reactions had become clouded by the lack of blood in his system, but he still managed to pivot on his left leg and swing his body around, throwing a punch that Luke easily deflected. “It seems, leech, that we are matched.”
“In your nightmares” Jesse growled. Bringing his arm up to deflect another attack. Luke’s eyes narrowed as he jumped back and then ran at Jesse, catching his chin with the force of a battering ram. Jesse slid back a few feet, struggling to stay balanced as Luke came at him again, sinking his fist into Jesse’s gut and leaving him on the floor, where Jesse executed a perfect role and then sprang to his feet with the agility of a cat.
Jesse phased to the side and pretended to throw a punch with his left hand, as Luke reached up to deflect it he brought his right fist around and rammed it against the side of his opponents head, the force caused Luke’s surroundings to blur slightly, he regained his senses a second too late and was unable to block a second punch, and then a third. He fell back and found his head spinning too much for him to be able to pull himself up. He felt Jesse’s hand at his throat “A fitting end, like father like son.” Jesse growled, as he tightened his grip.
Luke reached out and his hand closed around the hilt of a small silver dagger, discarded by a fallen slayer, just as the pressure on his neck began to choke him he brought the blade up and punctured Jesse’s chest, Luke twisted the hilt viciously snapping it from the blade so that the silver remained inside his chest.
Jesse gave a single cry of pain before collapsing onto Luke, Luke pushed the body off of him and rose to his feet, panting heavily has he observed the waiting crowd, now the slayers outnumbered the vampires, and all would fall. Luke smiled as he heard the distress in Autumn’s torn voice.
“You coward! You bastard you..” she began to sob as Emelae closed her arms around her and hugged her tightly, they had finally accepted their demise.
“I did what was required of me.” Luke snapped, he tuned to his mother and bowed his head “The lead is yours.”
The vampires stood along the far wall, as they had done at the beginning of the battle. The five remaining slayers stepped forward, leaving Jesse’s body behind them, curled in the blood of his enemies. Autumn refused to die on her knees and rose slowly, still clutching Emelae, Dustin came to stand beside them and the three of them held their heads high, facing the barrels of the slayers silver guns.
Out of the corner of her eye Autumn detected a flicker of movement, Jesse, pushing himself onto his hands and knees, he dug his fingers into the hole in his chest and pulled out the silver blade. It burnt the skin of his hand but he ignored the pain, he staggered to his feet, making little noise as he crept forward, his eyes tinged with tears and determination.
“Thus ends the rain of the Dark vampires.” Luke smiled, aiming his gun at Autumn’s chest. It was then that he felt a hand, slick with blood, pull at his neck.
“Are you kidding? We are too hot to be extinct.” Jesse growled, raising his other hand and pressing the silver blade to Luke’s neck. “I win,” he slit the blade across his captives throat and winced at Alexandra’s cry of pain as her son fell.
“But you were gone!” she shrieked.
“Your son has terrible aim.”
“Get them!” she shouted to the other slayers, but they were already backing towards the door, Autumn didn’t blame them, Jesse’s expression was manic, his face splattered with a layer of blood, his hands covered in gore. He pushed his hair from his eyes with a red hand, dying his white fringe.
“Leave now and we shan’t harm you, continue to fight and I will be forced to defend my family.” Jesse spoke with the dignity and refined words of Regal Ebony Dark, sounding so much like his adopted father that it scared Autumn slightly, even his eyes examined each slayer with such profound indifference that for a moment she was convinced that Red had been reborn inside of her lover.
The slayers left, running, tripping over each other until they were just padding footsteps in the distance, only one remained. The foul woman who had started it all, she stood in the middle of the room, between the corpses of her sons as sirens sounded and drew closer. Jesse went to Autumn and scooped her into his arms, holding her close as Emelae did the same with Red’s body and Dustin collected the paralysed bodies of Maria and Rexene. Toulouse got to his feet, Hanson’s arm slung over his shoulders and together the wounded vampires left the safe house, leaving Alexandra to stand in the centre of her self-made misery.
Epilogue: The beginning of everything.
Jesse stood atop the worn stone steps, ancient and so much older than himself. Ravaged by time, but not crumbling. Holding the memories of a once great man who had stood in the same place, examining the same small town. Behind Jesse a black scar stained the starry sky, The Tower, rising above everything like a memory long forgotten. In his mind he saw Red, ascending the steps, carrying a blood covered baby in his arms, so many years had passed since that day, over thirty now, but his memory still lived on within them all. He felt his lovers’ soft hair; blown onto him by a cooling breeze, and reached down to take her hand as together they watched what Red once had.
“Deer tonight.” Jesse decided as together they descended the steps into the town below, it’s buildings towering above them, making them feel so insignificant to the world, which they were, but to each other no person had ever been more important.
“You aren’t allowed to hunt.” Autumn reminded him, leaning her head against his shoulder.
“I didn’t lose that bet.” He protested, turning his head to kiss her forehead.
“Yet.” Autumn smiled and stopped walking until he was a step below her. He looked up into the beauty of her bright blue eyes and traced his own over her features, although he had every one recorded to perfection in his memories. She wore the most delicate deep blue Victorian style dress that hugged her curves and contrasted beautifully with her pale, moonlight lit skin. He sighed as her soft hands traced the shape of his shoulders and pulled him closer, with the difference in their height him being a step below brought Autumn perfectly level with his face. She kissed him gently, moving her lips against his as he clutched her waist and pulled her into a tight embrace, a groan came from deep within him as she pulled away, biting his lower lip.
“Deer tomorrow night.” Jesse conceded. Sweeping Autumn into his arms and carrying her back up the steps. “And I think you will be hunting them.”
Autumn wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his throat, as they entered The Tower she bit his neck and he sighed deeply, letting her fall onto one of the curved sofas, he straddled her. “I wish you wouldn’t insist on wearing these dresses.” He growled as he struggled with the fastenings.
“But Emelae was so generous with them.” Autumn smiled, letting her fingers twist into his hair as she pulled him down and kissed him again. Pouring her adoration and love for him into that one kiss.
Jesse pulled away, gasping for air, it had been so many years yet she still left him breathless “I liked your mini skirt phase best.” He whispered, he lowered his lips to her throat then paused as a light song drifted to him through The Towers wall’s, with it came the voice that he hadn’t heard in over 10 years.
“What once was lost
has now been found
and true loves sweet embrace
I’ll miss you yet although you left
Sweet lovers in your memory”
Autumn wriggled from Jesse’s arms and ran to the door, pulling it open to reveal Emelae, walking towards The Tower, her pink dress shimmering around her feet as she came, her hair hanging around her shoulders. Autumn ran to her and hugged her tightly for after Red’s death Emelae had left them for what seemed like forever, and now she had returned they could once again be a family. Emelae held Autumn close and then opened her arms for Jesse, breathing in their sweet scents and wishing she had never left. She looked up to the shape of the tower, to the window of her old room and in her minds eye she saw Regal Ebony Dark sitting on that window sill, waving to her and beckoning her into the home that held too many memories.
And so ends the story of Regal Ebony Dark.
