I am only 17 and still in high school. But when I think what I am going to do with my life I get worried and thats not like me. I start to wonder if I won't be able to support a family and myself. I have ideas of what I might want to do but I just can't see them happening at all. I don't know what I should ask for advice or just some support. It seems like my future is just going to be filled with black holes and i'm kind of worried.

hmmm ... i'm only 16 who has been 16 for 8 months and don't have her permit yet (lol). I do the same thing ... i worry about my future (grades, college, job, family) too. I have ideas of jobs i want to get after college but i cant c them happening either. But u know what my aunt told me when i told her to give me some advice and support, she told me to "not worry much cuz we are still young. We will figure out during our college year. Highschool is just an experiment. Just study the main things that u think u might take or want to have after college. C if u like it or not ... if not, then try other experiences that u think u might be good at in the future." "Seems like my future is just going to be filled with black holes and i'm kind of worried." <--- don't think like that ... i hope ur future is filled with good things ... lol ...

Well i was suppose to graduate this year and go to college but I was worried and tried to enjoy myself to not think about it and now i have to do half a year of high school again. This might give me some more time to think but you need so much money to go to good colleges. My worries keep building up and my life seems to have stopped in its tracks.

duuh, what did you think ppl graduate from h-s at age of 30?
It is normal age to graduate from high school, some might already turn 18, but it depends on what month you were born. :dead:
OK. Firstly, you need to think ... what is that you want to do in your life?... Or what is that you certainly DON'T want to do.
What is that interests you the most and what is that you are the best in? What are your plus-sides... and what are your weak spots.
If you know you are really good with computers and you really enjoy fixing them.. then maybe you should get interested in IT. I don't know it.
Have you talked about it with your friends, family/parents... advisor at school?

recently, i've been talking to some people back in my old home town and they're having this sort of crisis as well. however, they seem to be taking it a step further (which might even be helpful to yourself) and questioning life in general. i say it may be better for you only if you don't drag yourself into a depressioned stupor.

think about the big picture. what is it that you want in life? sounds like you want a family, right? well, you're not going to have the best of luck finding yourself someone to fall in love with if you're worrying all of the time so my advice to you would be to take a step back, reeelax and enjoy every second of your happily unknown, crazily scary experience. there will be surprises and of course, disappointments, but take them with a grain of salt and a big grin and you can get through anything. don't get hung up on the future, it will come soon enough, so just enjoy the beautiful life that you're living now. :)

Money is another problem. I can't find a good solution than just trying to get some grants, scholarships, sponsors... or just get a loan (aaahh..). Why don't you tell us, what did you already do in order to find your path in the future?

find as many college that has classes that u might like to be in the future and take as many classes in college and u will then find ur career =)

I would rather start off differently. First, think about what kind of college can you go to. I mean if you can afford a great private school - then feel free to choose any MAJOR you're interested in.
When you think about getting a higher education you can't think "small" but you gotta realize major things. You can't concentrate on picking singular classes, because regardless of which you like or dislike you will have to take a bunch of those you are not interested in.
Therefore, knowing what school can you afford or get to is the first step. If you decide you want to get to an expensive school - you need to think of how you will pay.

Ask yourself if you want to study somewhere far, or near the place you live.
Go online and make a research. Find out what are the average incomes of the professions you are interested in.
Then try to find schools that offer programs/majors .... which can provide you with an adequate education.
Picking classes is the last step in this whole process.

of all of the choices... the best would be something dental/orthodontist - they make more money than any interior designers - that's just for sure.
It doesn't take a lot of "philosophy" to educate yourself in that fields, and it is certain you WILL find a job.
When it comes to art.. and this sort of stuff - it gets harder.. because you need to prove your talents as well as your own unique way of thinking. Likewise, there is a much smaller demand for interior designers rather than dentists.

It doesn't really matter if you can make a (really good) living from it. I know something about. Here in the States, or even in Europe... ppl who work in those professions make lots of money. It is a very lucrative and "secure" job.

Its normal to worry about what you will do and what you will become later in life. But dont let it get to your head. Think about the things you're good at and do it for a living.

The worry wears off. Not in the mood to dig back and quote, so instead I'll use...well quotation marks. "YOU'RE STILL YOUNG". Just getting out of high school is possibly the best time you'll get in your life until you retire. Lots of people travel, some take some time to themselves to just rest and let their brain straighten out. Even then, some people (as I believe sp!r!t mentioned, though she refered to highschool) go to college and university until they're in their thirties! There's a wealth of opportunity, and it's not necessarily about the money. you may not make stupid amounts of coin to be an astronaut, but you get to go into space...sorry, I didn't say that right...F**KING SPACE!!!!! that's a m-fn fringe benefit if I've ever heard one. Even better is the potential to do something you truly love, which is worth far more than any amount of salary that comes in. Unless you live in a box and sell toenail clippings, then you should reexamine your life. Point being, I know it's typical to worry about your future, but if you don't pay attention to where you are you'll never get there.

haha, you had actually enough of time and patience to read through this whole thread... including even my posts, ;) How lovely <3
And thanks for this great interpretations of my words! hehe... yeah, that's exactly what I meant, lol :))))

I keep "dreaming" all the time about what I'd like to do in life.... I don't really worry about it... I just enjoy my life as long as I don't have too many responsibilities (like taking care of my own kids etc)..... still..... there are times when I think rationally. You said, money is not important if you do something what you like, something that is giving you joy, right?
Well, yeah... I agree that money can't give you "the happiness" although... can help you out..... to get on the right path.... Money is not everything, thou it's still very important..... and unfortunately our life depends on money.

I love to travel, but it costs. There is no way a regular person like me could travel for free (or cheap), and I am not talkin about those crazy hitch-hikers (lol).
Anyways.... I want to get the education I need, still I am not some Rockefeller's daughter. I don't want to depend on my family... or what's worse -become a "loan slave." That's why I think this country is really f*cked up. Ppl live their lives just to pay off their debts. I don't want to be one of them.
The question is how to avoid it? How can I finish the school without running into debts.

To begin, I want to say no matter what you have planned things change so stressing over anything in the future is actually pretty stupid. That doesn't mean you don't plan for it, just stop stressing yourself out cause you will never know what will happen to you. Take me for example, when I was a pre-teen I wanted to be a teacher. Then during my teen years I wanted to do something with aviation. Now after 3 resturant jobs, 1 warehouse job, I finally ended up doing painting. Not really what I thought was going to happen but hey it keeps me alive and content. If you really want to get down to it kid, your about to join the rat race and it's a long and hard road with nothing in sight to relieve yourself from this hell except death. Or you can try to get filthy rich which there are some ways to achieve.

Small lesson #1. The business world is seperated into 4 parts. First you have people who make money by trading time for money ie. hourly pay, salary. Second you have your small business, your entrepreneurs, ones who want to be the boss not the hourly paid worker. Third you have your investor and finally you have big business. Obviously that last two make the most amount of money. The last three have money working for them with the entrepreneurs carrying the biggest risk of losing lots of income. Big business takes either climbing up a very hard corporate ladder or be a genius and invent something to start up a very big business ie. Bill Gates. Investors carry the smallest risk if they do their homework. No hourly work, no ladder to climb. So you can see which one is actually easier long term.

Small lesson #2. RESIDUAL INCOME. Whats that mean?? That means you spend a little money at first and then you watch money roll in regularly. Example: Lets say you buy 100 parking meters on a very busy main street. You pay for the meters themselves, the cost to place them where they belong and then you sit and watch money come in every time someone parks. Another example is lets say you start up your own cable company and people start to get your cable. You pay for modems and all that jazz once. At the beginning of the month people pay you once, every month. So you spend money once and it makes you money at least once a month. Thats 12 payments per year. Do the logic.

So yes you have plenty to think about what you really want to do and start taking your steps to your ultimate goal, but don't stress about it. Sometimes it falls in your lap, sometimes it runs away. You have to be knowledgeable enough to see the opportunities life throws at you. So basically stop your worrying and get out there. Ho rough around in the real world. Feel it's mighty slap called reality. Fall and fall hard so you know what to avoid. Study, study, study then party. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY and have the ability to make compromises when needed

I think that all of this advice will do some good but people can't change what they think about just in an instent. Im always so laid back i was never use to the stress i felt when i thought about this. Hell im not surprised im going back to school another year, I cheated my way through the whole thing. But i want to go to a nice colanary school but i just can't see that happening.

And what is your parent's opinion on this? Did they give you some advice? Do they support you or did they leave you with a "free will"..?

Well my mom and dad want me to decide for myself. And they think I am a good student and all but really I don't do shit. I even cheated on my graduation project. I most likely will go to some cooking college because it's easy and i like to cook.

i cheated my way through school and find it very boring. in fact the only thing i do in class is sleep. but i love to work on cars. and anything to do with cars and engines gets me excited like a little kid. when i seen my dream car the nissan skyline r34 gtr at hot import nights i literally bursted into tears of joy. and thats why im a mechanic. it pays good and i love it. now if you dont think you could go to every class for something you want to do for the rest of your life then you better rethink everything but dont stress.

Do it man. Cooking is awesome, and if you enjoy it, you should go to culinary school.

food's a good route. I almost went that way, and regardless of whether or not you chose that as your profession, it's probably one of the most useful skills to have I'd say. Even if you start working in a kitchen doing prep work or something to start, it'd be quite invaluable, experience wise.

hehe man you have nothing to worry about, your entire bloody life is ahead of you kick back and enjoy it. As some of you know, and probably fewer of you care, I just got back from Europe, it changed my entire out look on life and everything around me.... or perhaps cemented my beliefs, you dont NEED to have everything planned out in a specific order, it is often times better to just reply to what your impulses tell you to, and its alot funner.

You see in reality at the age of 17 (18 tommorrow) I have come to realize that I know jack shit about the world and everything in it. My head is simply empty in need of filling, I intend to pack it with as much junk as will fit. What excites me most about life is not what I do during it, but only that I have so much time to do it in. I know that as time goes on I will fill in the gray spots, and as long as I pursue what interests me with all of my soul then I will be able to reach true happiness.

I realize this is merely fortune cookie garbage coming from another teenager that pretends to have the answers to the world, but I honestly believe with all my heart, if you pursue what makes you happy instead of what the world expects of you, then you will lead a full and complete life.

My advice to you? Do what you sincerely want to do before entering college... and only go to college if you really like learning. Personally I wish to go to college for the experiance, the people, and most of all the access to any subject that might possibly interest me. "To get a career" Is a terrible reason to do anything.

So finish off Highschool, do it in an epic fashion, and then catipult into the real world. There are so many things you can do without an education, and even more that you can do with one. My friend builds trails for a living, 8 bucks an hour with over a 40 hour week. Every day he goes out and trucks through the forest clearing away a path in the forest, and joking with friends. He is able to support himself comfortably with money to spare at the end of the month. You will never become too poor to not have a place to live, as long as you are willing to work.

Your life is long and filled with new and interesting things, and you got a long time to complete whatever requirements you place upon your life at your own leisure, and if you dont get to them? Screw it as long as you were doing something that you really wanted to do in the mean time. That friend I mentioned? About to start hitch hiking to New York because he loves to travel, personally Im going to school because I love the atmosphere and the people, both of us are doing what we love, and neither of us will go hungry and die in a gutter.

And by god we will have more stories to tell Saint Peter than some middle class family man who went off to get a career in some random subject before raising a family. Stability is the bane of experiance......... damn just realized I have been ranting short and brunt version? Dont worry about it, you got plenty of time to do that shit do whatever interests you.

God, my rants are wasted in the world.

ok, i'm jealous because i'm gonna graduate high school at 19 all because i had to repeat kindergarten....a few times. but anyways, you don't need to worry, because it's the effort that counts in this country, if you try your best there is a 99 percent chance that you will get what you want. compare that to the 1 percent chance you would have in another country even if you did finish high school and go to college. besides, you don't have to go to the most perfect college in the world, one that gets the diploma and lets you have a good time is MORE than enough, and the majority of jobs in this world WILL allow you to support yourself and your family which is MORE than enough, so you don't have to worry about the perfect job for yourself. right now concentrate on something, work for it, and it WILL come tru.
