I want to know what do you people rather watch subed or dubed. This may not be a hard choice for all of you but for others like me it might tear me apart choosing. But In some ways both have there advantages like when listening to a subed anime i just feel like that is how it shoud be. But on a dubed anime i dont know, i think it depends what anime you watch like bleach is better dubed. But both have disadvantages like for subed you have to read and try to watch, which may be hard for some people and for dubed you dont always get the full experience of the anime. Either way it depends what type of person you are. But the thing i dont like is when an anime dosent release a dubed or english voice over for what ever reason. Sure i still will watch it but tekkaman blade was alot of reading and i missed alot so i had to watch it through twice just to catch everything. When animes dont get released with an uncut kindive makes me mad because i want to see what was there in the original version. So what are your guys thoughts on this topic.

I watch both, no brainer, heck most of the time I buy the unedited dvd's, then watch it w/ the eng dub and eng sub on, that way I can get the benefit of two different sets of dialog b/c the english dub in most cases does have some editing in the dialog even if the scenes are unedited to cover certain things that would be considering adult material, or for that matter just to make things more easily understood as japanese anime has a lot of references that don't make sense to english speakers w/o a lot of background on japanese culture and history, but by reading the subs I can see which way it has changed, now yes, I will agree that sometimes the english dub voices aren't as good as I might like, but I can say the same thing about the japanese dub voices. In fact it's my opinion that most ppl's obsession w/ sub rather than dub stems more from the fact that a sub might be available a week or two after something airs in Japan, but if they have to wait for an english dub they might be waiting for months or years, it's more a matter of impatience than which one is truly better than the other.

Actually whether you prefer the sub or dub of an anime, I think comes from which one you are most used to. I think if you watched a subbed version of an anime first, you will prefer the sub, as you are used to the voices and whatnot. Whereas, if you see the dub first and then go back and watch the original Japanese version, it may seem weird and out of place. For the majority of animes, as I tend to watch the subbed versions before the dub, I prefer subs. Some I do prefer dub though. Also I think lazy people prefer dubs as well, they don't want to have to go through the trouble of reading subtitles.

Well i am happy they are going back and releasing some animes uncut like one piece (witch i think they did the whole series over at time to make it for kids) in a case like that i was watching the subed version, but know that it is out im going to have to move on to that. I understand how they change alot of stuff so we can understand it but truthaly i think they overboard sometimes by taking out ciggerits just so the television site approves of it. They do know that there are anime tv sites out there dont care what they play because they know what fans want hell they are fans. Then in some animes they feel like they change it to make it more interesting like when evangelion took the words out of the final scene in the series with shinjis dad thou that wasnt that close to the end. IM just trying to say they go to far in the editing sometimes.
Corwin
06-12-2008, 06:24 AM
yeah they do go too far in editing on occasion, but what I don't really get is the ppl who complain about dubbed anime dvds and say they can only watch anime online since they can watch it subbed that way, that always bothered me b/c the dvd's have the option to switch to japanese dub/english sub, and if you were smart enough to buy the uncut dvd version chances are you're getting a much better viewing experience than you would w/ a fansub, you might even end up w/ a few extra scenes that weren't shown in the tv airing that the fansubs get their eps from since even japan has standards in broadcasting

What I don't get, is that networks like Cartoon Network and 4Kids keep bringing over these animes on their channels, knowing that unedited they may not be suitable for the demographic they intend to see it, and then go overboard with the editing. Wouldn't it be less work to just get a series you wouldn't need to heavily edit? One major example of way too much editing is the licensed version of Cardcaptor Sakura, they cut out nearly half of the episodes and even cut out plot points and story details so as to make the main character of the anime a male instead of a female. Why go through such lengths just to show an anime to a bunch of little kids?
Corwin

Who knows, I think they base their decisions off the popularity the anime has already received in Japanese markets and then base it on some market testing in the US by showing some kids an unedited Japanese dub version of the anime and see what they think of the overall look, so essentially considering the demographic they are aiming for, as long as it's got pretty colors and sounds, they can make a couple bucks off it

You bring up a good point about over editing. Most of the networks have just started to play what they want like on the funimation channel plays the episodes with voice overs but they play it uncut. They know what we want to see and we dont even have to order that channel unless you have a different service provider. Like in one piece they changed so much to make it for kids they are now forced to rerelease it for fans of the real show. Which make it alot of pointless money and time spent on something you should have done from the beginning. Most of the time i will watch subed so i dont have to deal with missing anything amazing.

I honestly hate most, if not all, of the dubbed anime!! I can only watch regular subbed movies, but can't stand the anime! Just the timbre of the voice and English doesn't fit.. don't go along with the character's movements and expressions... Sometimes, it sounds even hilarious... I protest! lol
On the other hand, I love subbed anime. The translation on the bottom...doesn't bother me at all.... it only helps me learn some Japanese... (though some of the fonts and styles ppl use for the subs are catastrophic, lol)

Yeah, indeed most of anime series are really bad-dubbed therefore making subbed version more famous. But that's depends on the anime character's.Just for an example..Girl's bravo and FMA are way better off with dub

You three have good point on why subed is better but the anime beck mongolian chop squad the whole thing was based around music. Now do you sit there and listen to that in japanese or wait for the dubed. Now that is kind of an exception because the voice overs were amazing and they hired voice actors that play instruments and sing. Now that anime wasnt edited at all but wasnt played on tv because they didnt want to tear it apart which was a great idea. If we want to get any where they need to find some way to make the station happy with leting them edit them a little less.

yes some dubs are done poorly, but that doesn't make all dubs bad, some subs are horrible, and as for using subs to learn japanese, that just seems a bad road to go down, b/c some sub groups have horrible translation and you also don't learn the grammar, just b/c our sentence says "John plays with the ball." that may not be how the sentence comes out in Japanese, so you can't really use the subs as a baseline to learn from, sure, some words, it's a little easier too, but their is also the problem that so many of their words are the same but mean many different things, you might end up trying to speak the language and end up horribly insulting someone

I also like the Japanese music and it kind of bugs me when for the dubs (They hardly do this ever anymore except with kid shows) they decide to make their own op/ed song for the dubbed anime. And a lot of subs are done quite poorly (speed subbers I'm looking at you). But a lot of subs are done really well and it's evident the time they put into making the karaoke for the op/ed, sometimes they will have different fonts for when the different characters speak, and also the little info boxes that tell you about Japanese culture or relate puns, etc. There are good and bad dubs, and there are also good and bad subs.

What Koopa is talking about is exactly why I've said some ongoing series may be late in posting episodes, but that is because we are trying for quality, not quantity, yes some groups manage to sub their episodes very quickly, Dattebayo for instance, and still maintain a high lvl of quality, but most of the ones that speed sub as Koopa put it do a horrible job, even when the translation manages to be somewhat grammatically correct and understandable, then the video quality or the audio/video sync is so poor that it's painful to watch

I prefer subbed...
Dubs IMO tend to cut alot at times and if a dub is cutting alot points where its violently graphic..it removes some of the drama...which is ok once or 2x...
But if the show gets too butchered by the editors it can loose its feel ..
If anything Id watch the sub first then the dub because that way Ive got all the parts theyve edited out that donate to the plot in my head...
Also subs are much faster for an ongoing series...

I preferred subbed because I don't really like dubbed voices. The original Japanese voices sounds a lot nicer :) Plus I don't really need subtitles most of the time, I can understand basic Japanese (thank God :D).
I haven't seen much dubbed anime but I want to say that some of the voice actors doesn't put enough emotions in their voices during serious scenes and it ruins the mood D:

I personaly love the voice of garra in naruto. And sometimes they might not match but it is hard to find a voice that is just right for the characters look and style. But in subbed most of the voice actors work because we as not able to understand what they are saying mostly agree with the original because they just sound right but may not be to them.

I know many people watch both and I do to, but , if i had to choose i would rather wach a sub than a dub since, lets admit it, some dubs suck, besides with subs you get the original emphasis of phrasesand some expressions.
Even so, subs show literal translations which can be a llittle annoying sense there are jokes that are only funny in the original lenguage ( dubs will normally replace or work around the joke )still i guess it all comes down to which one you enjoy more.

If I could get dubbed anime that wouldn't cut all the good stuff out I would say dubbed. Most of the time I get a deeper meaning from the anime from subbed though.
I want to know the dirty words being said. I want to know what was intended. Just give it to me like it was supposed to be heard and I would be happy but when I compare dubbes to subbes the dubbes always seem to be missing a lot of things I would consider important to the story and context.

Most of the time i prefer the subbed, because the sound of the japanese voice actors, i think, tend to match the look and personality of the characters much better then the english voice actors (no offense). And also because I get annoyed listening to Americans trying to incorrectly pronounce japanese names, when thier pronounciation is obviously and painfully wrong lol. The only exception I can think of (off the top of my head) is Rurouni Kenshin. The english actors voice (for Kenshin) sounds so much better to me than the japanese voice actors does.
But most of the time i'm all for subs. ( ;

See there are some flaws to the subed versions with people stopping in the middle of a series because of licensing issues. Then there is somethimes the issue of a long conversation and you may not get a chance to read it all and if you do you miss the action that was going because you were busy reading. Sometimes the subs go to fast and you dont get the chance to read it all. These are all reasons of watch more dubed uncut animes on dvd rather watching ahead in a series. But i do watch ahead sometimes like in naruto shippuuden. TRue dubed may have some voice acting sometims but latley it has been getting better withsome of the animes i have seen.

Well most of it is because we now learned from some of the mistakes from animes in the past and we just have better technology to make better dubs. And as you said since a lot of the companies are now doing the voices they choose better voice actors for the part and spend more time trying to make it a better quality. Now that this is happening i think that dubed has finally caught up with subed animes. Yeah, having well known companies doing dubs is a good idea. Taking your example of One Piece, for example. Funimation took a bunch of the voice actors that are known for other works they've done, such as FMP (?), FMA, and DBZ. And I think they did perfectly on choosing those voices, in my opinion. ::D:

I think both have advatages...
With subed, you have to read the text, which takes the audience's eye off the animation. You miss gestures that the characters make or important things that go on while you're reading. However, I think that hearing the original voice matches better with the character.
With dubbed, you can watch the animation without missing anything. However, when the storyline is translated, some of the meaning or emotion gets lost.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages... I just say that in the end, all anime is good anime!

I think that a lot of animes are now working that out after seeing what happened to some animes. One i can think of that kept a lot of the same in america and in the original was Evangelion. They had to change some things around but they worked it so it means the same thing but to us it is right and to them it would be confusing. But in the end it told the same story correctly in both versions. But that was a little older, newer animes have been trying to work the problem out with spending time making both sides of the anime happy.

I agree with Party, I don't know if a person is being sarcastic, bored or anything like that. But in the dub I can.

Most of the time the dub voices don't go well with the characters at all. And emotion in language is universal. I can understand what kind of emotion someone is conveying no matter what language they are speaking.

I can't understand all emotions with sub. Only anger...happyness...

What how can you understand all of what is going on in subbed, sure it is easy to understand when they are happy, sad, and angry but thats about it. Sometimes i don't get how they feel sometimes so it takes alittle bit out of the anime. That is why sometimes i find an anime i really like i wait for the dubbed.
I really haven't seen that many voices that match the character's image but a lot of the time i noticed was it went with his or her attitude in dubbed.
I both like subbed and dubbed. But mostly i like dubbed because sometimes i get tired of reading the subtitles.

I like subed because it is the original version and the voices just sound better when it is in japanese. When the anime is dubed it just doesnt sound rite. I will say that I don't mind watching bleach, naruto, and code geass in english.

The subbed versions are way more genuine. The voices suit the characters better, but sometimes, in my opinion, it could be the other way around. But i still do like subbed better! ; ]

Subbed. Of course, if they managed to do a good dub, then i would want to watch that instead. But thats just speculation, as i haven't seen/heard a good dub ever.
mursku

partyprobe - you want us to argue? hehhee, okay ::D:
well, subs have their good and bad points. Like they take up valuable screen space (there can sometimes be like 5 lines of text on the screen at the same time!). Also it can get pretty confusing when 2 or more persons are speaking at the same time. But most of the time none of that is a problem and you can hear the audio like the creators intended.
Dubs on the other hand, never sound right. Due to necessity the dialogue is modified to fit the timing of the flapping mouths. And even if by some miracle they manage to get the translated dialogue to sound natural, they then screw it up by casting wrong sounding voices. Like they record a Bronx accent for a yakuza in Tokyo, or stuff like that. Also the US dubbers don't know how to scream, be it angry scream, scream of pain or whatever. They all sound fake, like they were too embarrassed to scream in the recording studio.
So yes subs can be a bother to read sometimes. Like when i'm too tired to read subtitles, I'll watch american cartoons or TV shows instead. But at least with subs I'll be able to immerse myself with the story much better. Even in the best of dubs theres always some horrible voice actor or the voice just doesn't fit a character(s)

Well in dubbed animes now they are now just getting the correct people for parts alot of the time. Like in Beck Mongolian Chop Squad they chose amazing voices for the characters because it went with the look and personality of the character. And with mistakes in the past they now have those screams that just sound real like in Beck. I have been noticing that dubbed animes are starting to sound better and better. A part of that could be fans watching subbed because of the mistakes with the voices or how it dosen't go with that characters mouth and the companies now notice they need to spend more time on the animes. In subbed animes the problems with just to many words in one scene get old and a lot of the time the words just fly by and i cant read them. I think that soon dubbed will be on the level or even better than subbed.
Watch Beck Mongolian Chop Squad in dubbed form if you haven't seen it yet. It is a must buy.

Which is better?
Subbed, or dubbed?
I'm going to say subbed. However, I'm biased by default. Reason being is I have less than perfect hearing. I'm not deaf, but I rely on lipreading quite a bit for clarification purposes. In order to watch dubbed anime at a comfortable level where I can hear >90%, it has to be 'quite loud', i.e., my wife can hear it from upstairs (naturally, I use earphones a lot, or put on my hearing aids. I'd probably be arrested for breach of the peace otherwise).
Naturally, this has put a hinder to my Japanese learning. :dizzy:
If I want to listen to the Japanese, I can put the audio up high, or my earphones on, or if I want to just enjoy it without, I can with subs.
Even before my hearing was 'less than perfect' (yes, it is a recent thing. I won't go into it unless people really are that interested, which I doubt), I always preferred Japanese because the dubbed voices don't tend to match the appearance, or just generally, suck gluteus maximus.
So, that's my reason. Sub = understand 100%. ::D: Dub: Understand anywhere from about 35% to 75% upon 'normal' level, and it requires a great deal of concentration (ever seen someone frown watching something they're enjoying?). The slightest noise and I miss it. ::D:
So, there you have it!
Your thoughts?

Hmm interesting.. I suppose it depends on the anime.. some are just subbed while others are dubbed. I personally like to watched the ones that are dubbed only because you can understand them (that is if you understand english and all xD) When they are subbed I seem to miss a lot of the action because you have to read what they are saying. But just my preference xD

I prefer Sub simply because from my experience of viewing different series, the dub version seems to be a bit below par in comparison to sub. When I say this, I mean the quality of the voice acting. It just rarely seems to move me.
And as was mentioned earlier, learning a bit of a new language from watching so much is always a positive.
Looking on both sides of the coin, though, sub has its problems apart from whats been mentioned. Obviously, sentence structure works differently than in English. So with that in mind, it's sometimes difficult to catch onto a true point of something being said.
Simply put, the "stressed" portion of something that's being said. But other then that, I'll generally prefer sub.

Hm, I really dunno....I love mostly every japanese voice but I also like the Hungarian dub. The Hungarian dub is rules they translate it better. Once I watched Inuyasha on dvd with hun dub and sub. Seriously the dub was way better, a laughed more!

I gotta say, i like the Dubbed version better. I can watch the subbed, but i cant watch to much cause it gives me a headache, plus i wont be able to eat dinner while watching subbed, or ill make a mess. With the dubbed, i can watch all the anime i want, and eat dinner without making a mess, its perfect.
I just don't like dubbed females though. The voices can be extremely annoying. Some that is, not all.

I have to say that I prefer subbed. But sometimes I can't find the beging of an anime subbed so i have to watch that series dubbed. I hate it when your in the middle of a anime and have to switch from subbed to dubbed or vise versa. Anime started out japanese so it should stay japanese with subtitles.

Dubbed is like a bootleg of the original
plus usualy when its dubbed things are cut out
but subbed you get the whole thing nothing less
and plus cheesy voices dont ruin the characters appearence

I watch both, but sometimes i can't stand dubed. After watching three hundred odd episodes of Naruto subed i could not stand the old lady that plays Naruto's voice in the dubed version.
If i had a choice between watching the subed or dubed....
I'd read the manga.

True, I do hate it when the dubbed cuts things out :/
Watching dubbed on adult swim is usually all right though (Bleach, Death Note)
Cartoon Network kills it (DBZ, Naruto)
And 4kids tourtures it (One Piece)

Subbed, hands down.
I'm like this with everything, though.
It probably stemmed from me staying up late and finding Chinese martial arts movies on television, horribly dubbed to the point where I found myself cringing every time their lips moved several seconds before and after the actual dialogue.
Even if I have the uncut version of an anime that has been professionally dubbed, I always turn on the Japanese dub and English subs. I like reading subtitles, even in movies that are English, because I want to make sure that I don't miss anything. I read rather fast, so I rarely am unable to read the subtitles and see what is happening in the scene at the same time.
The one exception, however, is the anime that feels the need to explain every little thing (such as Kyou Kara Maou, or at least the first few episodes--I'm not very far in the anime) and so I have to rewind to read the explanation as well as the sentence.
Dubbed anime on Adult Swim isn't horrible but I began to hate Naruto right after it came on Cartoon Network--I cringe every time I hear a "Believe it!" and the voices are all wrong.
However, I watched InuYasha in English before I saw it in Japanese and I have absolutely no problem with the Japanese dubs, so I don't think that it's really what you've seen first. I think it's simply that I like everything the way that it was made, any alterations make it seem almost inferior.
Perhaps I'm just weird? haha.

IMO subs are alot better than dubs mainly because dubs usually take out the best parts and the voice overs are often terrible. When Death Note premiered on Adult Swim i thought "sweet!! finally in english!!" but after hearing how gay they sounded i said "**** this..." and they took out so many unforgettable scenes. Luckly i was fortunate enough to have seen the original episodes.
The only thing i don't like about subs is that i can't eat while trying to read what's going on in the show. It's an art i am trying to perfect.
