Yes, in shippuden sasuke eventually kills Itatchi. Eventually though, he regrets it because itatchi wasn't actually even bad. Apparently killing his clan was an assigned top secret mission.

or so they say. remember, tobi or first leader of the uchiha clan (don't remember his name) or what ever his name is told him that. which it might not necessary be true since he is a bad guy after all and bad guys do tend to lie sometimes. but yes. itachi did die in order to protect sasuke from the first leader of the uchiha clan. but you never know.
