And I dont wanna hear any domestic vs. import madness

and if you can add a little background to your reason

My favorite car is my ford explorer sports trac
It is a small light pickup truck (about 4000 lbs)
It has a 4 liter v6 engine which produces about 170 hp and 185 torque to the rear wheels
After modding it a little i have got it to be quite responsive in the handling department (lowered slightly, stiffer shocks, beefed up rear sway bar)
I still have much to do in the engine modding department (only basic intake mods, ignition system mods, and a full exhaust system)

Anyway, i like it because it is a 4 door truck with plenty of room both in the cabin and in the bed (a little cramped in the engine bay however)
Fun to drive and has nice torque in the lower rpm range

Well i look forward to hearing about your cars and/or dream cars.

Personally I liked my 1992 Mazda Protegé LX sedan, I took as little care of that car as I possibly could, blew the radiator, broke the exhaust, the new exhaust weld broke, dropped 3rd and reverse, kicked and punched it a few times, lost half the screws for the car battery mount, blew out several sets of speakers, had something growing in my trunk for a while, had it searched by military personnel for weapons, had some paintballs break in the trunk, didn't drain the oil for like 9 months, forgot to change the transmission filter/fluid for 18 months roughly, blew out several tires, bent the rims, tore the side up on a fence, had it spray painted w/o my knowledge, and maybe some stuff I don't remember, despite everything, that car ran faithfully for me for 4 1/2 years before it had to go to the junkyard for $50

Nice marmottin, I like little trucks. For a while I drove a 5-speed '95 isuzu pick-up. Never got to modify it much, but the back end was light enough to make any parking lot a fun time.

Dream car... I have recently been looking at the Mazda RX-8, I am intrigued buy the entire rotary engine concept (been around for a while, but new to me). I have seen several that have been tuned for autocross and are just nice! I like the blue with chrome the best. I know it's not the fastest thing out there but that can be fixed to some extent. On top of that, a little 6-speed manual rear wheel drive with a sport tuned suspension? One little car that's oh so fun to drive :)

Raven, im a fan of the smaller lighter cars also. my friend has a 04 minicooper that is a blast to drive. sport tuned suspension and weighing a little over 2000 lbs. It makes navigating tight turns sooo much fun... (not like i would ever drive like that on the streets :oo: )

the rotary engine is getting a lot of attention now. It produces a decent amount of power for a relatively small engine. Although it isnt efficient as it could be. The gas milage isnt the best. But with the attention that it has been getting, im sure the newer designs will be more efficient and the tuner world will soon be turning its eyes on this killer engine. (and of course the car looks pretty clean in itself)

unfortunately I have no need for a car so I don't own one, but this little vid makes my jaw drop.

Marvel of engineering, and so much money put into it. An amazing car, to say the least, but a little bit out of my price range.

And besides such a high speed, it can slow down from that speed to a complete stop in 10 seconds. That is insane!!!!

I must say, speaking of the Z06, I am definately looking forward to the future in the interest of cars. Imagine such a powerful engine being so efficient. Just goes to show how cars are evolving. I can't wait to see what will be out in 10-20 years. Will the car world be focusing on milking power out of hybrids? unleashing the raw power of diesel? refining gasoline motors to even higher gains? boosting engines to even new heights through turbos and s/c?

What a good time to be a car enthusiest!!!!:dancing:

If you're going with classics, my grandfather has a '72 Charger that I'm just itching to restore! If only I had the resources:crying:

The problem with these new high powered efficient cars is that they are all turbocharged. This means that your 31 miles to the gallon is only if you don't go above 2500 RPM and into the turbo, and they only have 400 horsies once you get up to 5000 RPM and are getting low tens for mileage... and turbo is soooo adictive:dancing:

marmottin
06-05-2008, 07:37 AM
Im more of a supercharger guy myself, (somewhat) steady gains throughout the entire rpm range, you dont have to wait for it to spool, and i absolutely love the supercharger whine:dancing:

But i agree with what you said about the gas milage vs. horsepower.
Its still amazing that a v8 can make such good gas milage.

XD when raven said only 400horses, i believe it was in reference to some of the other sports cars out there, for example, with only a few basic mods and a larger turbo, a toyota supra can make over a thousand horsepower

of course thats not saying 400 is a small number, i mean, i would looooove to have 400 horses at the tap in my truck!

The De Lorean is the greatest car ever made. Nothing beats its stainless steel frame and its unique side doors. Just be sure to drive the speed limit, and please, never accelerate to 88 mph...

Raven
06-05-2008, 07:53 AM
Haha, guys! All I was saying is that a car rated at 400 horse only reaches this threshold when it reaches a certain RPM (e.g. 5000). 400 is a ton of power, the STI has "only" 300hp and it's scary to drive!

marmottin, I agree with you depending on the car. Superchargers are great off the line but aren't a helpful at higher RPMs. Using the STI as an example again, it has all wheel drive and can beat almost anything off the line, where it needs help is in moving acceleration. The STI has two aids in this respect, an adjustable diff so more power can be diverted to the rear wheels, and a turbo that really gives a kick once you get moving.

I second that koopa.

Raven, I apreciate the s/c more because i have a truck. I need that early hp and torque boost to get off the line, and then my larger engine would help me at the upper range of my rpms. And yes, sti are crazy little cars. it doesnt help that they are super light too. God i wish i had one.

For daily drivability, where you dont have to reach 4000+ rpms, the supercharger is a better idea. The turbo can be helpful in that aspect too, but only if it is smaller, as you see many stock cars come with small turbos in them.

Raven
06-05-2008, 08:05 AM
Ahh, see that makes sense! My college roommate has one, got it for $12,000 with 9,000 miles! Yeah, everyone hates him now. lol :)

But a supercharger affects efficiency constantly because it is belt driven. I like turbos because if shift early you still get killer gas mileage. Silly small turbos, you need at least 20psi.

marmottin
06-05-2008, 08:07 AM
Silly big turbos, busting out of the hood and such. Now i would take a twin turbo setup over a s/c any day.

ok. ok...
I'm a japanese-car lover. In my family we used to have german cars (like mercedes or bmw)... we used to have japanese cars... and other....
So, even tho I love the prestige that the bmw offers... still I would be in a huge doubt to buy another one.
Raven knows that.... I wish to buy a nissan GT-R ^^ .... in comparison with other the same class and power cars... it's pretty "cheap" but still... over my budget ^^
Therefore, I think I would buy the newest red altima, or red infiniti G35.....
I'm driving a manual maxima now, so I think that any of the above 2 cars should have enough power for me, anyways.. ;)

It comes with Rudolph, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Donner, Blitzen, Cupid and Comet, so that is nine horse power. It is VERY fast.

marmottin I'll answer you like this -> *smiles*

It's not like I've never drove an american car... the problem is that we used to have several different US cars.... none of them "passed." Ok. But those are just mine preferences, right? It's like with ppl who love german cars.... like Mercedes, Audi or BMW... not to mention VW (which I dislike the most) No matter what, they will always compliment those cars, trying to convince everyone around that those cars are best of all.. blah blah blah.... I just don't buy it. I had 2 or 3 different Mercedes models... same with BMW- 2 different models. Regardles, of how much I liked those cars for their prestige, performance etc - I know how often I had to go to the service because something wouldn't work.. or would need a fixing or change, whatever.... It's not that they are bad... just in comparison with japanese... have too many faults.

Last week a very close person of mine, had a car accident... He could have died in it, but had lots of luck. Therefore, we got now the newest VW jetta.... lol... that car makes me laugh. Though it's only temporary.. until we choose another car. It's kind of awkward, 'cause a couple days ago I didn't even think about buying a car... a now I have to.
I have two models on my mind. I'm repeating myself -_-"
Infiniti g35 and altima ----- which should I choose guys?? any opinions, please!

Yesterday I actually was working on a g35 at work. Beautiful car. I would definitely choose that over the altima.

Also, I share your hatred for VW. Beetles are the most annoying car to work on. No engine space, the older ones don't have radiators. They run sooo hot that doing any work on them is painful at best. (And personally I think they are repulsive.)

Ha, in Houston they put ethanol in the gasoline to help the environment. Not only does it make gas more expensive, but it reduces the mileage by like 10%. Making us buy more gas and not helping anything in the long run.
