Ok, as I am sure you all know, for most of the day today, Anime Fuel was down. We keep growing and growing at a startling rate, and we overshot our bandwidth once again. But we are back in full swing!!! I for one was freaking out when this happened, so let's all say "YAHOO!" and thank Demon Fox for rescuing us again.

Until next time that is...

Yes thank you Fox for once again giving me my anime fix, while I love that we are growing at such an exponential rate, I hope that we won't see a site down again due to that for a while, it saddens me when there isn't any way to get onto the site, I have to go find normal things to do then

Would there be a way to prevent a super surge of people joining? Like putting a temp limitor on how many people can join at a time until we can make the system better?

Corwin
06-01-2008, 05:31 AM
I"m sure something like that could be instituted, but we're not talking about people registering for the site, we're talking about overall traffic, and if we put a limiter, and we are the ones coming to the site after that limit has been reached we'll still be in the same boat, the problem is that the more people come to enjoy what we have the more bandwidth we use and every time we reach that limit, Demon Fox has to upgrade, it's not really a bad thing, we would have been back up a lot sooner but unfortunately the people he pays for server and bandwidth were being lazy and didn't get online sooner, the only thing we can hope is that all parties involved will be able to resolve this much more quickly in the future

What are the costs involved in having the site at a level to support everyone?

Corwin
06-01-2008, 05:48 AM
that I don't know, that kind of thing is Demon Fox's end of the business, b/c yes this is a business, even if none of us pay anything or get payed, I might ask him how much bandwidth we are currently using to what we were using before, but I think it's in bad taste to ask him about the money

But, if the site gets alot bigger then external funds will need to be obtained to support it. Then again, the site can probably go by itself by neccessity to support the people that do come, and downgrades could be possible if there occurs a big dip in the animefuel community.

Corwin

Well right now to the best of my knowledge this site is supported completely by advertising, so once in a while click some of the ads, that helps him get paid and he uses that money to cover costs here, that's why more people tends to mean more money from the advertising due to more clicks which means he can afford more bandwidth, saving us from having to pay out of pocket, or ask for donations

quietchat

I didn't realize they actually got paid for people clicking ads. I haven't really seen alot though, I think only on the home page.

Corwin

they are around the top and sides usually, Demon Fox has done a great job making sure they are unobtrusive, that's part of the reason this site is so great, some sites feel like they have to shove them in your face, and some don't bother w/ ads at all and expect donations from ppl, although I'm always reluctant to do donations, b/c some ppl have made a point of how some sites, both anime and sub group sites, get their sites paid for through the advertising and the donations are really just a way of lining their own pockets to pay for rent, food, or their own hobbies

quietchat

Depends on the frequency that they get clicked though, right? If no one clicked the advertisement then wouldn't the business that owns the ad pull their support?

I thought id just say so everyone has an idea, the site was generally working at 500gigs of bandwidth a month. That was our maximum bandwidth per month that we were allowed last month. The last time the site went down I had to request it be increased to 600gigs. A couple of days ago it reached this 600gig bandwidth which I immediately requested it be increased. The administrator increased it by 50gigs probably assuming that because the month was nearly over there wouldn't be a problem.

However today it reached that limit and the server host wasn't online for most of the day so I had to wait for him to come online before again requesting he increase it. The set bandwidth for this new month is now at 750gig.

I must say I'm happy to see the site growing at a rapid pace and will be looking at increasing the bandwidth to 1 terabyte so this doesn't happen so easily again.

Isn't a terrabyte 1240 gigs?

you mean ads like best anime site ever.....the one that requires votes and/or others?

Corwin
06-01-2008, 08:49 AM
actually quiet, a terabyte would be technically 1000 gigs just like 1000 megs is a gigabyte and so on down the line and up it

and animaniac, those are mostly just to let ppl who check those topsites know who we are I think, but I'm not positive, they could influence the money we get, or provide money themselves, but I'm not sure, but mostly we mean the other ads, they are placed by google, someone pays google to place their ad on different sites, so when someone clicks to that site from an ad on our page we get a tiny percentage of the money that that site payed google to place their ad

Well at least it's not what i thought it was, i figured it it was a denial of service attack (it's been getting more prevalent these days)

and with that threat, you'd be stupid to attack Anime Fuel.

Corwin

that's a nice sentiment arcose, and w/ the amount of anime we have currently, probably a sentiment a number of our viewers would share, but would it be enough? regardless though we can't charge money for use of this site b/c of what it is, right now we are able to skirt the copyright issue b/c we don't actually host any of the videos, but if we start charging you to watch what we find, someone would eventually get the word out to the companies and we'd have the full force of their legal departments coming down on us, but thanks for the sentiment

Koopaking

the site does pay for itself enough to cover all its costs (server, domain, etc) so that we are lucky for, you'll see other sites that not only will they cram ads in your face every link you try to click, they beg you to donate and keep some features off limits to members who don't donate. So that makes Anime Fuel awesome.

Corwin
06-02-2008, 12:11 AM
personally I'm reluctant to trust sites that require you to donate, yes some of them I suspect are being on the level w/ you, but too many of them are using the donated income to support their hobbies or pay their rent, I'm not advocating not donating if you donate to a sub site, but be careful

actually quiet, a terabyte would be technically 1000 gigs just like 1000 megs is a gigabyte and so on down the line and up it

actually, it's hard to say, because technically 1 gig = 1024 megs. However, in the computer industry, they kind of cheat you by considering 1 gig as 1000 megs. that means that for every gig you buy, you're actually missing out on 24 megabytes. so yea a terabyte would be 1024 gigs, but it depends cuz if demon is going to purchase it, they might give him only 1000 gigs. it's a marketing scheme.

Corwin
06-02-2008, 02:57 AM
as I said, technically it's 1000 gigs, the rest is just the slight accumulation of extra byes for each kilobyte growing and growing
