View Full Version : stick or automatic?

Those who are the active drivers, what do you drive: a manual or an automatic car? Or regardless of what you drive, which type of car you think it's "better" to drive?
I bet that most of you who are outside the States drive manuals, however there might be some exceptions ^^

Even though I chose to drive automatic it would be best to get a manuel because of the high gas milage they get not to mention the car tends to last longer then an automatic

Strike, you're right.. although even in Europe, where mostly ppl drive manuals, still the gas cost is way more horrible than here in States.
1 L of fuel = over $1
1 L = +- 1/4 of gallon... so it's like FOUR TIMES more expensive! Can you imagine?! That's INSANE!

I'm a manual driver for a couple of reasons:
Everyone in my family drives a manual, I was originally taught how to drive it when I was in 7-th grade. I've always admired my brother's driving skills, therefore it was always my childchood dream to become as good driver as he is. And the last reason, driving a manual.. is a completely different story than automatic car. I love to be in a control over the powerful engine ^^
It's kinda lame that ppl in USA are too lazy to learn how to drive a manual ;/

I dont like to drive that much... but for those two I think I will pick manual or go with a scooter b/c gas is cheaper with it Xp

don't drive anymore. well technically don't. but though it takes actual learning it's more worthwhile to go manual. gas mileage, transmission takes less abuse, pretty much more efficient all around. auto is just easy as pie.

honestly i just drive whatever is the cheapest. if an auto is $500 and a manual is $400 i go with the manual. if the auto were cheaper id go with that. i dont have the money to be picky and since i can/have drive/driven both i dont have to be picky

Yes yes yes everyone that knows how to drive stick likes it better then auto. I just so happen to be very lazy and auto is more convenient. No need to use both legs and an arm to accelerate though I do like the control of stick.

Raven, you're a guy I assume?
I'm a manual driver all the way!! I would never buy an automatic car unless it was for a handicapped person or a grandma ^^
Recently, I drive a maxima, although my dream car is nissan GT-R (based on japanese skyline).
It's not about the speed all the time, it's about the dynamics!

xantok, the fastest I've gotten was also 135/140 mph ^^ that's pretty fast - over 220km/h... and I'm a girl ^^

leerock was right on this one, that everyone that knows how to drive stick likes it better then auto. It's true. Auto isn't that big of a deal to "learn" to drive. It's a toy ^^. You sit and press either accelerator pedal or brake pedal... *yawn*... and a person can't really develop any driving skills.. except "perceiving the dimensions of the vehicle". Go to Europe... you will hardly find ppl and youth driving automatics.

Yes Sp!r!t. Who doesn't want a GT-R :) But they're all automatics :(
Nicest car I've driven would be my friend's Subaru STI... in the snow!
I have to agree; acceleration and speed can be enjoyable, but the fun comes in maneuvering... that and shifting (to bring things back to the real topic).

Raven
05-31-2008, 02:21 AM
As I understand it, it is like having two clutch assemblies. 1 for 1st, 3rd, and 6th gears and 1 for 2nd, 4th, and 6th gears. What it does is eliminates shift time altogether. When shifting (e.g. 1st to 2nd) 1st gear doesn't disengage until 2nd gear lifts the load. So during the time spent engaging 2nd gear the car is still accelerating in 1st.
Did that help?

Yeah, I think that's the biggest problem that all of the newbies have ^^
That's also a reason why some ppl hate manuals, because simply they can't drive them!
Most of all, its not about the money, economics, or gas price... it's about if someone owns the skill or not.
But on the other hand... Dark Zeik... you got nothing to worry about... Most of newbies have problems with "gently" starting off from the 1st gear... It takes a lot of practice until you finally "catch the tip" and your moves become smooth and natural ;) That's why is best to start practicing when you're young... ;))
I encourage you to practice ^^

Well, it actually depends on the car's transmission. Some cars tend to change gears faster and smoother but other don't. If we are talking about the "physical ability" to change gears - yeah... automatic transmission does it faster than my leg and arm can do (lol ;P) However, it's not enough to say that automatic cars are "better."
More than than.. what matters, is the control of the power. When you drive an auto it is not you who decides about the gears and the power.
Plus, you can always reduce the power by changing the gear...

It doesn't take any "philosophy" to drive an automatic... it's a toy... you jump in and drive..... pretty easy... lame...
To drive a real car... it takes time, practice.. and skills.
Those, who "drive" automatics... are not rally drivers.

to me is faster than auto because and auto changes gear at a certain rpm . a stick u can take it to the red zone if u want. meaning the more control over ur car. an auto it controls u.

thats why i called it automatic crap.

What? Of course stick makes your car faster! Haha, but really, if you look at specs for (most) cars that are produced with both manual and automatic transmitions, the manuals have more horsepower. The auto saps power for all the belts any hydraulics it uses. Manuals are more mechanical and give a better transfer of power.

they just make the cars with manuals faster because they are the sport edition. besides the automatic can shift whenever you want it to. its called throttle control. besides if you get a shifter for an automatic its the same thing. besides with a clutch theres more of a chance for driver error. ive been working on cars my whole life and really you can make an automatic just as fast as a manual. its all gears.
