Hey guys...

Inspired By Ayumibee i would like to no about all your languages, slang and swear words in your native tounge! Even english because Slang and swearwords vary from contry to country!

Well my language is maori from the country of new zealand (Hell Yeah!)

N e ways ill start things off...

"Hello" in maori is "Kia Ora" and is Pronounced as (Key - Are - Or - Duh) Now say those words fast and you get your first maori greeting! ::D:

Next is "Good Bye" in maori its "Ka Kite", Pronounced ( Car - Key - Teh)

"Piripiri Mate" which means "Deathnote" in Maori, Pronounced (Pee - Dee - Pee - Dee - Mar - Teh)
Say it fast or it wont sound right!

The reason we pronounce our "R"s With "D"s is because we roll our tounges and "D" is pretty much the closest to a rolling "R" if you haven't done it before!

** I like to use english words to help with pronouncing my language cause its easier that way i guess**

Nice,a rather interesting topic..So here i go.
My language is greek,from..Greece obviously.

"Hello" in greek is "Γεια",But on english it would most likely be 'Gia' as for .. (G - I -A).

"Good bye" in greek is,"Αντιο"as for (A-D-I-O).

Hmm..Deathnote in greek would be..em..aaah..."Το τετραδιο του θανατου" or something like that.you pronouce it "To tetradio tou thanatou" but i guess you wont really understand this one.

Also i'll carry on with the language and add 1 more word.
"Wait" as for "Περιμενε!" is pronounced "P-E-R-I-M-E-N-E".

Greek is a rather weird language just like japanese. So it's pretty hard understanding our language, not to mention one of the hardest, most complicated languages of all time.1 word could be use in a lot more than just one setence.

Thanks Shigami!
Greek is a new one for me very intresting!

Ok heres a few more...

"Run" = "Oma" (Or - Mar)
"Beautiful" = "Ataahua" (ah - tah - who - ah)
"Name" = "Ingoa" (ing - or - ah)
"I Love You" = "Ma Tewai Pare" (Mar - Teh - Why - Par - Deh)

Well, most of y'all know the English language so it would be pretty pointless to say put the English words, hey, bye, hello, etc. up; so I'll go in Français :D

Hello: Bonjour
Good Bye: Au revoir
What the...: Ce que le ...

So yeah, theres a few lines in French :D

As far as how it's pronounced I can't really explain it -_- good luck with it! :D

I guess a fair way to explain the English language, is most everything is pronounced the way it's spelled. For example, "Hello" sounds just like, "Hell-oh". Say those two words together and it makes, "hello" lol. Some of it is just too simple (for me) to explain so yeah. Possibly someone else can explain it better lol

Ok here are some random phrases in French :D
"Bonjour, mon nom est Ryuuzaki. Heureux de vous rencontrer." means, "Hello my name is Ryuuzaki. Pleased to meet you."

Viet:

Hello: Xin Chao (Sin Chow) (x's are pronounced like 's')

Good Bye: same thing

My name is...: Ten toi la... (vietnamese t's are pronounce 'dth', as in 'width' )

thank you: Cam on (cahm uhn) (vietnamese 'c' is pronounced 'ck' as in 'thick')

you're welcome: Khong co chi (kong co chee) (vietnamese 'kh' is pronounced 'kh' as in 'can')

Cantonese:

hello: lei hou / nei hou ( the younger generations replace 'n' with 'l')

goodbye: dzou* gin (my keyboard cant display the correct character, but the 'o' and 'u' are supposed to have two dots above them. to make this sound, make an 'o' with your lips, but say 'ee' instead. sounds kind of like 'dzoi') (note: dz is 'dz' as in 'godzilla')

thank you: do dze

your welcome: m s'ei ('e is a short 'a'. kind of like 'a' in 'what' as opposed to 'ah')

Please= Vui long

Sorry= Xin loi

actually, the 'please' you are talking about is 'happy'. 'Vui long' literally translates to 'happy insides', or just 'happy'. please, as in 'please and thank you' would be 'lam on' (opposite of 'cam on', or thank you)

a2ng0d
05-20-2008, 07:22 PM
oh yea heres more

Viet:

I - toi
tao (casual - use only with peers)
You- there is no polite word for 'you'. the general term for 'you' is 'may', which can only be used towards close friends, neutral peers (they might get offended), and enemies. it can be compared to japanese 'teme'.

To properly address someone, you must call them by their rank in society, rather their rank from your perspective.

Ong - term for older males (lit grandpa)
Ba - for older women (lit grandma)
Bac - for men and women who are older than your parents (lit great aunt/uncle)
Chu - men that are peers to your parents/aunt/uncle (lit uncle)
Co - women that are peers to your parents/aunt/uncle (lit aunt)
Anh - guys that are your peers but are older; also used by girlfriends to address their boyfriends (lit older brother)
Chi - girls that are your peers but are older (lit older sister)
Em - boys and girls that are your peers but younger; also used by boyfriends addressing their girlfriends (lit younger bro/sis)
Be - people that are very young; generally children (lit baby).

Him or her - address the him or her by their rank, or use 'no' (the general for him/her shows no respect, like 'may')

Canto:
I - Ngo (ng as in 'going')
O (slang)

You - Nei
Lei (slang)

Him - Ko*u*

kind of. it depends on what youre used to speaking. somebody who speaks chinese, thai, or cambodian would not have a hard time speaking viet, as opposed to someone who speaks japanese, korean, or english.

I was observing this thread for a while... it is very nice to see how it expands. I wonder how many more languages other members know. I haven't noticed anyone who would know Polish. And I'm not even sure If any of you would be interested in getting to know it. It's a pretty tough language, especially to pronounce. Here, where I live... every other person is like Polish or have Polish roots, even in my high school I had so many friends with Polish last names, but what's sad... none of them could say a word in Polish, not to mention they didn't know how to correctly pronounce their last names! (what a shame!)
Anyway, Polish is somewhat similar in sound to Slovak, Czech and Russian (but the alphabet is completely different). As opposed to Russian, it has a firm and "rustling" sound. Some examples:

Hi - Cześć ... cz= tch like in "ketchup" | e= like in play | ś= like the "soft" s in "sure" | ć= like in peach but a bit softer ^^
(one of the hardest words to say, haha ) - you can say that to your friends or ppl you're close with, even parents but not teachers! etc
if you want to sound even "cooler" and younger you can say:
sie ma - which is a short version of "jak sie masz" (how are you) the easiest word which is the closest in "sie" (itself) sound would be "shit" (sorry guys ^^) but without last "t", just try to say it without "t" and "ma" (has/have) is "mah" like "Miami" or "march"
Jak się masz? - jak (how) - "yack" or "yacht" with "k" instead of "cht" | masz (to have)= "mash" ^^
However, even "cooler" kids use nowadays different word to greet each other, which I personally find weird and w/o any sense
siedem - I think it partly came from "sie ma" although it literally means "seven" (lol) "dem" is like "them"
Another way to greet a friend can be:
elo - which is almost like "umbrella" in Rihanna song, although with an "o" on the end, which is very short. Other VERY popular way to greet is:
pozdro which means "to greet" and its a shorten (slang) version of "pozdrawiam" - po= poh z= zero dro= "draw" with an "o" instead of "aw"

What's goin on? - in present slang would be - O co kaman (but this is so new, that only young ppl would get it)
O - sounds just the same as in Japanese or Spanish, it is very short, like in Spanish "loco"
co - the "c" sounds like in "circumstances" an "o" always remain very short
If you'd like to ask politely. It would be "O co chodzi?" cho= "hotel" | dzi= "je" like "Jesus" or "jingle"

Yeah, those who tried to say any of above words, probably have already gave up, lol. However, if anyone would like to know more, just let me know ^^ I'll be glad to write some more ;)
In my opinion some of the sounds in Polish are as hard and difficult as in Arabian.

Hey AyumiBee, My mother knows Hungarian!! ^^ She had learned it a long time ago, back when she still was a high school or college student. Then during one summer she practiced it while she was visiting Hungary ;) She told me that it is a very unique language that doesn't sound like any other, haha. I made a thread about Rosetta Stone and here is the email http://www.rosettastone.com/personal/languages/japanese. Do you think that this would be a good program to look into to buy. I mean I cant go to school for Jap until next year and I really dont want to wait that long

Hello , I speak native Norwegian and a little German (its very simmilar to Norwegian)
By being one of 5 million Norwegians I also have a great understanding of sweedish and danish cuz of many words wich means the same even though its a whole diffrent language :)

If you have never heard of Norway we are the Vikings raiding UK around 1000AD :P 5millin ppl in a country as big as UK and makers of Age of conan :D

Here we go Norwegian 101 :D

WE have 3 extra letters æ ø å (aeh, ö , öoh)

The month february is old Norwegian(Norse) "februar" and means "feber-du-har" (you got fever, lol)
it was the month given to the vikings when Vikings/romans and the Greek ppl devided the months we got only 1 month so we made it a joke , hehe

Norwegian/english

Bil/car

Hund/dog

NORGE/Norway

Skole/school
