Well a lot of animes involve things like incest, yuri, yaoi, etc. Incest and girl crushes, while still majorly frowned upon, are taken a bit more lightly in Japan than they are in America, I don't know how they are considered in other countries though. Yuri, the lesbian animes, are mostly made for the sake of fan service. The animes involving sibling/relative romances can actually present the incest as a plot device as a dilemma for the main character(s) who have feelings for their sibling, but are confused etc. etc. Take Koi Kaze for instance, which has some big things in it not considered acceptable. This guy and a girl meet, although she is 15 and he is 27, they end up falling in love. Then they find out they are brother and sister. So the anime is about Koshiro's love for Nanoka, his conflicting drive to obey societal norms, and Nanoka's growth into womanhood and her growing feelings for her brother. This is one of the only animes involving things like this to be licensed for other countries. In the end, though, a good anime has a good story, and seeing new and different things is something anime/manga writers consider when making them. An anime with a controversial or taboo subject matter by no means makes it a bad anime at all.

Yeah Halo I've never really understood it either. I guess the main reason is because it makes good T.V or something, though to me it's just stupid. Surprisingly, I watched/read all of .hack//Dusk (.hack//legend of the twilight is the manga) and really enjoyed it, but I did see it first thing. Example (for those who haven't seen it) in the first chapter in the manga, after the main characters Rena and Shugo go into the game and meet up with each other, Shugo starts not only looking at her, but look at her breasts and waist (lower waist), blushes, and says he doesn't know where to look. That implies that it's a major turn on (not arguing there by the way) but it's his sister he's "looking at". Also Rena getting jealous and stuff whenever he gets kissed on the cheek, and saying stuff like, "Oh so you care more about this NPC then me?!" stuff like that. It's subtle but it's there.
I agree whith any love..(except the direct blood relatives-that not right).Love has no age limit..for axample the age dif. betwen my mom and dad was 17 years...and they had a nice love story and a nice kid--?that's me ;)

well yes the age difference really isn't that big of a deal with a couple once they get to a certain age. I mean, no one would think otherwise if there was an old couple that was 17 years apart, at like ages 75 and 58, and to a lesser extent if they were like 40 and 23, but it would considered just plain creepy if they were together and they were 25 and 8.

Well 25-8 its not a possible relantionship...i refer the ones that both members involved in relation r constient and can take full responsabilty for their action..
*Giggles at this topic* Well thank you for your response Koopa and and everyone else but Koopa's goes into a good depth of explination. Also Ryuu, so glad I am not the only one who saw it between Shugo and Rena in .hack//DUSK.
Now I never said I hated the animes because of the incest, I was just curious if there was some cultural difference that my American mind wasn't taking note of that Japan tends to follow when it comes to incestious relationships.

by adding it they supply a plot twist, like how Revolver ocelot got his arm cut off and had liquid's attached in metal gear solid.

Also Ryuu, so glad I am not the only one who saw it between Shugo and Rena in .hack//DUSK. HA! Of course I saw it, I'm always on the look out for stuff like that XD Thats what me and my friends do, you watch an anime, find something interesting about it, then talk about it. We talked about that one for days :D very fun.

When it comes to the incest thing, I am totally against it, but I understand that if a writer wants to put that in their story then go ahead. I even saw an anime where a brother and sister were killed because of it (Fushigi Yugi OAV). In other words I don't like it but that is the artist's choice, but don't expect me to agree with it. I mean If some of you have read my profile, I have watched allof Sailor Moon, and 2 characters are lesbians (in the manga most of them are bisexual). I don't agree with lesbianism/gayness, but if that is what the artist wants then I can't stop that, because that is their creative freedom. Most of the time as long as nothing is being shown (making out, sex, touching), then I am fine, but once those things occur I stop watching it.

I agree with Koopa. The main reason I watch anime is to witness these scenes, record them, show them to everybody, then save it in some endless file, never to be seen again. And Ryuu I dont think its just the sugar or caffeine. They got to have lsd in their water or something

Like I said before I am against lesbianism/gayness, but if that is what people like then fine. Just don't force me to accept it/ be a part of it. I just don't enjoy seeing two people of the same gender/bloodline kissing/making out/having sex. It is against what I believe in but if others like it go for it I can't stop you. I still have plenty of anime's to enjoy and mangas to boot.

The real fact is, the Japanese have a natural feel for themselves. What I mean by that is, they take pride in the perversities of nature as well as the origins of it. Every person to this day is an ancestor of incest from +10,000, scary thought that it might be, but it's true. Japanese take things like this to heart as it's just part of your own humanity.. why should you go against it?
Now us Americans have been taught to downplay that ALOT by being sheltered from so much stuff, but that kinda stuff dates way back to religious pressures, which I'm not gonna get into really, but that's how it happened. I have no problem with any of this subject matter. As far as I'm concerned, it's all natural, despite what the American culture thinks.
Hehe I find the subject matter interesting, and I love a scene of two hot girls fondling each other and whatever else comes to ones imagination. Perhaps that is because I am bi in real life. Probably. It was just something I never really noticed till recently. I completely missed it the first time I watched Elfen Lied, and so my first time seeing it was when I was watching .hack//DUSK so yah. It came as a shock to me to see it in two animes back to back.

In some circumstances it's been a little uncomfortable, like angel sanctuary( way better example shiv), but overall it doesn't end up being anything that I get freaky about. and the elfen lied bit was with his cousin, right? can't recall, it had far greater perversions at play than incest.

Americans are naturally prude due to their own heritage. I mean for centeries they never had sex until they were married and anyone who did it before was branded evil and corrupt. That all ended when LSD and the hippies hit the scene in the late 60's. But they are still so prude about everything!!! Oh a little blood!!! RUN!! OMG there's two guys holding hands, KILL THEM!! WOW there's to much cleavage showing, "Excuse me miss but could go go home and cover those things?? Your exposing my kids to things that are natrual and I don't like that." America really needs to get over it and learn to accept the norms. As for incest, I personally don't like it but, hey, whatever floats your boat man!

25 and 8? that's a pedofile my friend. it really bothers me if any girl under 16 goes out with a guy more than 5 years older than her. heck i know a girl who is more like a sister than a friend to me and yet she likes 17+ guys even though she's 14. <-------that worries me. now on the incest issue, i don't mind as long as it at least 1 or 2 degrees separation in the family. like cousin to the 1st degree. (or was it order?)

What a subject... and the answer is probably just as others have suggested, its common and the Japanese talk about sexual human behavior without much inhibition.
From what I have read about history, not just Japan, many class systems retained their power of blood heritage by keeping the titles of power in the family.
Incest is pretty common all throughout history and if you study genetic diseases you will find that many scientists argue that those diseases of the genes like sickle cell could be a direct result of generations of close interrelations centuries ago.
From what I have read on genetics, the genes are compounded when you have children created from incest. Most are normal and you would never know there was anything different about them at all. Some will inherit recessive genes from both parents that can then trigger whatever genetic disease the child's sibling parents have a recessive gene for. some will also have good traits compounded and could be gifted in various ways with great talent or mental ability.
It doesn't seem to be anything that is any great risk physically unless there are recessive genetic diseases present, the tragedy is that many are unwilling participants and something like that could scar a child for a good portion of their life.
Wikipedea: Prevalence is difficult to generalize, but research has estimated 10-15% of the general population as having at least one incest experience, with less than 2% involving intercourse or attempted intercourse. According to a study by Floyd Martinson, 10–15% of college students reported childhood sexual experiences with a brother or sister, mostly fondling of genitals rather than sexual intercourse.

Technically and biologicaly speaking you're not "blood-related" with you're cousin,so it's not incest, and in case you didn't know you can marry you're cousin in Japan. Also i think incest is a turn-on factor for some, since many hentai are based on that subject.

It doesn't really bother me, I think it actually makes the anime a little more enjoyable because of the dilemmas and problems the sibling/relative romance creates. And my view on the subject is, is that if the couple matches, I don't think it really matters.

I could not agree with you more my Koopaness...you're points were accurate and concise...and besides INCEST (believe it or not non-believers) is WAY MORE prevalent in the States than people think!
