a good storyline, you can forgive some bad aspects of a book, an anime, or a movie, as long as the story is compelling, it's just made better if other aspects are good as well

i have to have some kind of demon hero/heroine (or however thats spelled) ie Tenchi Muyo has Ryoko, Blue Seed has Kusanagi and Inuyasha has (of course) Inuyasha.

why does it have to be a male char? I don't know that just seems like an argument waiting to happen...

i must agree with Corwin ill be the one to start the argument.
in about 78% of games males always choose to use female characters if they can. so you would assume that the females are the better choice. so why is it different for anime? i mean its just as easy to watch some chick kick butt on her own without you having to push buttons, right?

that and considering the predominance of new anime's w/ lead female char's, sure they have a strong male char in those shows as well but if you notice he's usually in the supporting role, as for female char's being played predominantly in games, specifically online games, and most of them mmorpg's, that's b/c some ppl assume that your char gender is ur real gender, and thus are more likely to give away stuff to women than men, I know that's why most of the guys I know play as female char's and from what I've observed, they were absolutely right, so what if it's a 40yr old virgin in his mother's basement thinking he's making some headway by giving you stuff, it's still free loot

I think a good anime should have a good or at least coherent storyline, interesting characters, and fan service. No anime is complete without some form of fan service.

Besides ANIMATION, I like/love animes that have storylines that keep you intrigued during the whole series. I can't stand when an anime starts off great and by the tenth or eleveth episode, you are asking yourself or the person sprawled on the couch next to you..
"Umm..where is this going?"
Example? Samurai 7. All in all, it kept me interested, but I asked my best friend many times what the hell was really going on with this series?
I suppose if the animation is good, it distracts from the confusion. But I personally prefer the best of both worlds. :cute:

I think the storys most important. I often watch anime, which i actually doesn't like, just to see the end (or what happens next).
But next i think i need some action, i like action-animes the most, though sometimes humor can be enough.

A good story line is the key. Also some humor, and or action depending on what kind of series it is. And Characters with personality.

I know what you mean ems87, I kind of felt that way w/ the first .Hack anime, in the beginning it was good, and there were a few eps that really kept you interested, but way too many of the eps I lay there wondering wth? or falling asleep during it b/c all they were doing was standing around talking in more or less monotone voices

I usually need a good lure, like sleek production, or hearing lots of sugary comments about something, but a good story and characters is typically what wins my heart. I've gotten into some shows that I thought would be amazing and they turned out to be pretty lame or died off on me. Sometimes I can enjoy shows for many reasons or a single one, so it'll vary sometimes. That's why I need a lure. plus I get weary of repetition, or extreme slowness.
It has to be fantasy(i dont like the ones that try to show real life),real kiling to be preasent, and OFC an Innocent Love Story!

Give me a good story.
The rest I can live with but if there isn't a good story then what good are the rest?

I'm looking for a good story with deep emotion-moving background,
I like when the anime or manga gives me the shivers and a heartache :P (lol sounds a lil bit sado-masochistic)
Like someone said before a character's development is important. It needs to be beautifully drawn, with neatly finished details.
I like difficult and harsh love stories, sometimes combined with ecchi ^^ plots, hehe... and with some martial arts actions...
A could go on, but ... I'll stop here ;)

I like an identifiable character (be they male or female), and a good sense of humor. Some anime can get old fast if they try to be too serious.
