Chapter Two : Part Two
I walked into the school, rubbing my gloved hands together. It was only the second week of December, the 8th, and it was already dropping into the 50’s.
Removing the Bennie from my head, I combed my now straight hair with my fingers. Mondays… I hate them.
“Stayce!”
My head snapped up at the sound of my name, bright blue eyes locked with my dark brown ones. Adam was walking up to me, followed my two girls that I didn't know.
Adam ran his fingers through his short shaggy hair, smiling as he noticed me staring. “What’s up?”
I shook my head, trying to find my words. “Um… nothing. I… I didn’t know you came here.”
“Oh.” He flashed his dazzling smile. “I just transferred here. I’m liking this Caster High.” He glanced around him, then back at me.
I almost melted at the way he said the school name. “Who are your friends?” I nudged my head at the two girls. With Adams good looks, I wasn’t surprised he already had girls on his heals… before classes even started.
Adams eyes flashed over my expression before he answered. “If I said they were my girl friends… would you be jealous?” He winked at me, his smile growing.
I took a step back. “No. I was just asking.”
The girl with the short bob-cut black hair stepped forward, elbowing Adam in the ribs before smiling at me. “Hi. I’m Sophia Vincente, and this,” she gestured to the girl with waist length blond-brown hair, “is Rose Abram.”
“Nice to meet you. Did you guys just transfer here too?”
Rose stepped up next to Sophia. “I’ve been in your English Three class for weeks.” Her voice was like a cats hiss, cold and cruel.
I just looked back at Sophia with a smile. “Well, sorry if you’ve also been here. It was nice meeting you. Bye Adam.” I whipped the smile off of my face before turning to Rose, and without saying a word to her, I walked off.
A hand grabbed my upper arm and pulled me back. As I turned around, I found myself looking at Adam. “Jacob wants to meet you.”
“Jacob?” Jeremy and Adam were talking about him the other night.
“Yes. He’s kind of our leader.” Adam’s smile wavered.
“Leader if what?”
“We’ll explain it all when you meet him.” The bell rang, allowing Adam to change the subject. “May I walk you to class?”
“Don’t change the subject. Who is Jacob?” Nice try though.
“Look. You’ll find out at the recruitment…”
“There will be no recruitment onto your team. Not with Stayce.” A deep voice with a heavy German accent interrupted Adam, who looked highly embarrassed.
I looked over my shoulder to see a tall German kid with sky blue eyes. He had to be about six foot three. His hair was cut short and combed into a barely visible mohock. Behind him stood another guy. He looked Mexican with black hair and gold-brown eyes. A slight hint of a growing mustache covered his upper lip. He was cute. And beside him stood a girl. She had whitish blond hair, highlighted with black that stopped at her shoulders. A small amount of freckles dotted her pail white skin on her nose and checks. I could tell se was white. I recognized all three of them. They hung out with Jeremy a lot.
The German kid stepped up and gently pulled me away from Adam. “Jeremy wants to speak with you.” He was talking to me, but kept his eyes on Adam.
Adam smiled at me. “I’ll talk to you later, Stayce.” And with that, he and his friends walked off, neither of them looked back.
I pulled my arm out of the German kids hand, making his attention come to me. “Hey Stayce. My name is Alwen Albrecht. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. We were just talking…”
“Jeremy wishes you not speak with Adam.” The girl stepped up. “My name is
Elizabeth Walker.”
“And I’m Miguel Santiago.” The Mexican kid walked up to me, shaking my hand firmly. He was the only one who shook my hand the first time we met instead of grabbing me. I liked him for that.
I smiled at Miguel. “Nice to meet you.” I looked around the hall and say the crowd thinning. “Guys… I wish I could talk, but I have to get to class. Tell Jeremy I’ll talk to him at lunch…”
“Stayce! There you are. I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” Janae’s voice made me jump. She sounded close.
I turned around to find her no more that three feet away from me. Her eyes trailed over my shoulder and at the others standing with me. “Who are they?”
Her eyes locked to one place. I turned around to see what she was looking at to find her and Miguel staring at each other.
A smile creped over my face. “This is Alwen Albrecht, Elizabeth Walker, and this…” I stepped next to Miguel. “This is Miguel Santiago. Miguel, this is Janae Mason.”
He smiled softly. “Nice to meet you.”
“Y-you too.” She looked down at her feet, then back up at him.
“Time to get to class! I held a big smile on my face as I pulled Janae away from Miguel and the other. We half ran down Hall One of our school to our first period Pre Calculus class. Taking our seats in the back, I turned to Janae.
“Love at first sight or what!?”
“Shut up.” She smiled and started going through her backpack. I had a feeling that if she were one shade lighter, she would be blushing.
The bell rang and class started. Every now and then, I’d look over at Janae and found her spaced out, looking at the clock. Janae had never fallen for anyone. I wonder what drew her to Miguel…
“Ms. Raymon!” My teacher’s voice broke my train of thought. I looked up at Ms. Hale, eyes full of confusion.
“I’m sorry, what was the question?” The class laughed.
Ms. Hales face grew with anger. “I said to answer the problem on the board.”
“Miss… what makes you think I can do that if I wasn’t listening?” I already knew what was coming.
“Step outside, Stayce. I’ll get a referral started.” That’s what I get for acting before I think. Bet you didn’t think I was so bad.
I stood up and made my way out into the hall, jumping as I ran into someone standing right in front of the door. My books fell to the floor. I immediately dropped to retrieve my things.
The person I ran into knelt down to help me, but I didn’t look at him in the eye. My mind was set on what I would do to get Janae and Miguel together.
