Hey there, this is Quietchat bringing you the details on the Ubisoft Press Conference from E3 2009. This is the third press conference of the day, with two more to come tommorow before E3 opens its doors, June 2nd. I'll be sure to bring you the info from the other companies
Ubisoft is well known for developing games under the tag name of writer Tom Clancey, and games based on the books he has written. They are the developers of Splinter Cell (already mentioned during the Microsoft press conference with Conspiracy), Rayman and it's spin off Raving Rabbits (The new entry expected to be seen tonight), a personal favorite Assassin's Creed (With the second installment being shown tonight), new IP Red Steel (the second installment coming to the Wii), recently games based on the new Ninja Turtles movie/cartoon, the anime Naruto, and Ghost Recon (The 4th installment showing tonight). Ubisoft currently has developement studios on every continant(sp?) except for Antartica. They are one of the few third party developers to have found good success on the Wii and they are expected to do well with their continually improving games. Again, this is being written as the conferences are being shown live, and the current time is 18 minutes until the conference begins.
Alright, this is the now, and the conference is about to start. A trailer has started running, with clips and shots of characters from the games I listed up above. Someone takes the stage, Joel Mchale, host of "The Soup". Eve Guillemot, president of Ubisoft games is called up to the stage. It's a bit hard to understand him with that french accent. He starts talking about a few of the games, but he's not very in depth with them, so there's not much to say about anything yet. Next onto the stage is Yannis Mallat, president of Ubisoft's Montreal studio. He gets started on the videogame for the movie Avatar, the collaboration with the movie studio...... Hurry up and talk about the games! Why do you think Microsoft skipped this kind of talk!?! alright, still talk about movies, they announce there will be a short movie based on the second Assassin's Creed 2 movie. The president of Ubisoft is back on stage with Yannis, more talk, more talk about movies.
They invite James Cameron (Star I think from the movie Avatar.... or scriptwriter??) to talk about the videogame. He talks.... talking.... is he talking about the game or the movie when he describes the planet used for the setting? The Avatars are apparently bio-engineered creations in order to allow humans to travel on the planet Pandora, and the main character is torn between the humans and the sentient species on Pandora..... JESUS SHOW US THE GAME ALREADY!!! How long does the show go on for again? Let's see..... at this point there's an hour and a half left and they've spent a whole half hour on just talk and a short movie. Talking..... talking..... talking..... talking.... okay, he's finished.
Joel Mchale comes back on stage, talks about being afraid of the people back stage because there's alot of people are french. He starts talking about Red Steel 2, working with the Wii Motion Plus, and FINALLY we have an actual game trailer. It features the same commercial style for other wii games, with a person with a wiimote controlling a gunman clad in crimson read, fending off a bunch of people with his sword before moving to a 1 on 1 sword fight, and also showing how every single movement he performs with his hand is registered in game, switching off to a gun and shooting the person as he's knocked to the ground.
Next is Jason VendenBerghe (I think that's how it was spelled) to show more of the game. He says that everything playing is running in real time. It starts with the hero on his back, tied by the hands and being dragged by motercycle through a town. He gets a hand free and shoots the rider, allowing him to get free. So far the game looks really nice. The graphic style looks to be an enhanced version of the cell shading used for Killer 7 mixed with the semi-real graphic style of Red Steel 1. It's shown that the controls are fully customizable, and there are special attacks that can be used. The game runs at 60 frames per second. This game will be bundled with the Wii-Motion Plus at launch.
Joel comes back once again. Next is a trailer for Shawn White Snowboarding: World Stage for the Wii which uses the wii balance board. What's to say though? It's snowboarding, so if you want to snowboard on your wii, this is the game to get. He also announces a new soccer game, Acadamy of Champions, and brings out the famous football (Soccer) player Pale, to show the game. There was a trailer but apparently there were some issues in getting it running. Now Pele speaks in his native tongue, which his assistant translates..... Oh god it's more talk talk.... Okay, there's the trailer. It seems to take place in an almost Harry Potter esque castle, and of course it's good versus bad when you play football (soccer). Wii exclusive, released some time in 2009.
Alex Parizeau and Max Beland are brought on stage for a showing of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction. The trailer for the game from Microsoft's conference comes back. They tell you to remember that Sam Fischer, hero of Splinter Cell, is on a personal agenda this time, and that it will play at a much faster pace. That part before in the microsoft area, where I mentioned that Sam was in a bathroom interrogating someone, they mention that it was part of the interrogation feature of the game, and everything is interactive as to how you interrogate him. After that, it goes on pretty much like how it did at the microsoft conference. The giant floating messages I mentioned are actually projected on purpose to keep you more immersed. They mention that the area becomes almost black and white as a filter in order to let you know when you're hidden. The enemies now have flashlights, and when you are noticed and you break line of sight, the foes will be examining annd looking for you where they last saw you. Exclusive to PC and 360, slated for a fall release.
Joel again is back (yay) and the trailer starts out for R.U.S.E. Two people are sitting at a table with a flat board/map, with blips dots and objects just barely showing, and they are all being controlled with their fingertips and hand gestures, showing a beach assault. How are they going to play this game though? It looks great, but sadly they didn't spend much more time with it.
Next they call out Tony Key, Marketing division of Ubisoft USA, to discuss the casual games market, as they are the top casual games creator out of all of the other third party publishers. I don't think you'll really care about Petz or any of the Imagine games, so SKIP!!!!
He calls out Felecia Williams, lead developer of Ubisoft Montreal to talk about a fitness game titled Your Shape, that will use a camera, and it will watch you to make sure you are doing the excercises right. Again, jab at Nintendo, saying that you should be doing your fitness without a wiimote or balance board, should be hands free. A fat jab at Tony Key, they announce the game will be coming to the wii at the end of the year. They then show a trailer which demonstrates the game.
Joel returns to introduce Adrian Fernandez-Lacey (While pushing a rabbids in a shopping cart) to talk about Rabbids Go home, and show a very short trailer, showing the plan to get to the moon.... a giant trash pile, and they'll be using a shopping cart to collect junk to work on the pile (Explains the entrance). And now, an actual big trailer. It starts by showing actual humans living a normal life, andn then the rabbids invade and grab everything they can, including clothes, panties, dogs, cows, cars, and a large pile that reaches towards the moon. Obama makes an appearance (His clothes being stolen on stage.... IN THE TRAILER, NOT IN REAL LIFE. APPEARANCE TOO!), and a quick reference to E.T. jumping the moon. Then they demonstrate a bit of the game, where they are beating up a rabbid in a trailer by shaking it all over. They stick a vide on his head, use an air tank to make his eyes super large, put a hello hat on him, then throw him into a room with other rabbids. And then they show that the rabbid can be put into the cartoonish cinematics (think Alien Hominid), and then they finally show true gameplay, the rabbits looking like they did in the original game collecting stuff in the game on rooftops. You have to avoid the dogs that the humans will send after you... but then you can put them in your cart for the junk pile away. Then they show the exterminators, which you need to avoid the belly flop, otherwise they will cause uncomfortable chafing (This is all what Adrian is saying, not me). They show another section of the game, where they rabbids jump on a large jet pack looking thing, which they then show the rabbids pushing humans out of a moving (Not flying) plane, then smashing off one of the jet engines to ride around in an airport.
Joel returns (probably should have mentioned, he keeps making jokes about Ryan Seacrest). Next he welcomes the president of Ubisoft USA, Laurent Detoc (Another french name?) to talk about the 25th anniversity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (from here on being abbreviated as TMNT) and the game TMNT: Smash Up. It was shown earlier this year in Nintendo Power and looked alot like Super Smash Brothers Brawl in it's gameplay style. A trailer starts up for the game, showing Splinter, Leonardo, Shredder, Michie, so on, talking about why they fight. They show off some of the fighting (It really does look like it plays like brawl), but the envirements (SP) are going to be very interactive.
Laruent announces the sequel to No More Heroes, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle. Then he talks about a new project, that he starts with hints by naming Rez, Space Channel 5, Luminous, he doesn't give the title though. Next he hints at Assassin's Creed 2 and talking a bit about the game. The game releases November 17th, and hen follows it up with a trailer. It starts off with a date, 1486 in Venice Italy. There's a fireworks display, a celebration, a few armed people. Those people start to join in, and once starts to get trippy witht the music. With a flash, he's stabbed in the neck before anyone realizes what has happened. Our new anti hero shows up behind him, and fights with the soldiers, taking one person's spear and stabbing him with it. He flees over a river onto a roof, leaping and easily escaping. They reach a cooradoor and have a stand off, the character dropping from the roof to the ground. The anti hero lifts his arm up and fires his wrist blade at the person taunting him (Holy crap!).
With that the conference is over and done. Ubisoft will be showing off much more starting tommorrow when E3's doors are officially opened. Don't forget to catch the conference threads for Sony and Nintendo tommorrow, have a good night.
