So, I had a thought. I'm considering getting a piercing, or a tattoo. Or both. Any helpful hints, suggestions, or comments from the peanut gallery? Though not exclusively, ladies' opinions are especially valid here. ^_^

As someone who has two tattoos i can only tell you to make sure whatever you decide to get is what you want. its always helpful to plan out where and what you want to get so you have an idea of what it will look like. other then that TATTOOS ARE ADDICTING lol. and hope you can tolerate some pain and bleeding : )

good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I figured planning should be involved. What tats do you have, and when did you start?

For me the pain was surprisingly little...or maybe I just have a high pain tolerance? I dunno. Either way I thought it was going to hurt more than it actually did.

That really depends on you. If you want to get pierced then get one or a few. Same with tatt's. Just know that tatt's are forever and piercings can go away. You can get both if you want, why not its your body, do as you wish.

Haha yeah, it tickled me too, because my tattoo is on my inner left thigh.

Well, I am sure a lot of people must have said that to you but think about it well first. Make sure it is what you like and not something stupid or something you are temporarily fond of but might find it boring in the future.
Personally, I don't like big tattoos. I prefer some small and a bit simple (certainly no color)! But, well I am a guy so you might want to hear some girls out first on that matter!
That's all I got to say for now! If I think of anything else I will let you know!!!
Good luck! ::D:

WHAT? Salty?? You and tattoos? No way! What happened to that good, innocent boy??
Hell, I am just teasing ;)
Anyway, If I were you I would ask myself "Why do I want to get a tattoo" and "Do I REALLY REALLY want it THAT much?" : P

For some reason I like abstract looking things or symbols.. but by symbols I don't mean the picture of Mary and Jesus and the cross (that's cheesy) but something way more mystique that would have more than one meaning.

Where do you want to get it? (what part of your body)

Which part of his body??? Somewhere that only a few special people can see it... Can you guess? lol

I am not sure you reply to my posts since I asked Salty not you :P
But whatever.
Well, depending on the part of the body - he might choose a different tattoo.
First of all, I wouldn't get a tattoo on a part of body that looks "bad." Say, I have beautiful back and shoulders - then I would get a tattoo on my shoulder blade. Not everyone likes to hide their tattoos somewhere, that no one is going to see, unless they strip off naked. *giggles* Who knows? Maybe Salty wants to expose his tattoo?
If he has a nice neck - he could get one on either back of his neck or one side of it - something small, maybe a favorite quote? Who knows.
I am tired of seeing the same looking tattoos over and over again. Likewise people tend to tattoo their writs, arms, forearms all the time.

Salty needs to choose something that he identifies with. Something that will symbolize his person, character, beliefs ... a symbol.

Look up some Chinese and/or Hindu art - you might find interesting signs and symbols.

Think Before You Ink!!!!

If you get a tattoo, take it into account that in 40-50 years you'll have wrinkly saggy skin and that dragon art that was hot when you were young now looks like a deformed chicken. Assuming you live to be that old of course.

I say you get one hell of a long one. Like a dragon: It's head on your chest with the mouth open above your heart, the wings and spine spread on your back and arms, the hind legs ending mid thigh, and the tail wrapped around one leg all the way down the top of your foot.

Or you could just get your initials tattooed across your back. In funky letters, no less. :)

Interesting discussion. Thanks for all the pointers. As yet, I haven't considered what kind of tattoo, or where to put it. At this point I'm just intrigued at the idea itself. But assuming I were to get one, it'd probably be fairly small and put somewhere I could show it off, yet where it could be easily concealed if required, say for work or other professional setting. I'm all about flexibility, creativity, and convenience. :)

I liked your suggestion of symbolism, Spirit. And I also find more eastern-influenced art compelling and interesting. And Spirit ... if nothing else, you shouldn't be too surprised, considering the kind of music you know that I listen to. ^_^ *throws in some As I Lay Dying*

What do you all think about lip piercings? I'm thinking of either getting one on the corner of my bottom lip, or on an ear somewhere.

The piercing I could do without but the tattoo I want. I plan on getting a tattoo on my wrist, something related to music too...

So you've got my go ahead with the tattoos but the piercing is your wish

Lip piercing... yeah not something I'd recommend. I mean, you get a hole in your lip, think of the inconveniences of having to take it off to eat, dribbling your drink, getting it caught in your food if you forget to take it off, and then if it gets infected you've got a big puffy lip. But hey, some people like them and that's fine. As for ear piercings, they seem to be the easiest ones to maintain and have.

Yeah... lip piercing I don't like. Specially in guys but in girls too. It just doesn't suit my tastes... I like ear piercings, and maybe a small one in the nose or in the navel (girls only!) but that's it! Piercings in the mouth, tongue or eyebrow I dislike... So I say stick with your tattoo idea and maybe have a piercing on an ear!

Lip piercings are for girls. That's not to be discriminatory, but I find they only ever look good on girls. That said, vertical labrets! yum.
As for the tatt, planning is the only important thing to consider. Not just what you want, but who's going to do it (a trusted and skilled artist is rather important), where, colouring, and blahblahblah. It just makes sense to think something through to the very last detail when it's going to be permanent. Personally I like Tattoos, but I'm very fickle when it comes to artwork so I've steered clear from them. I know full well that I'd get sick of anything I'd have etched into my body.

Koopa, I really don't imagine any of the scenarios you provided would actually be a problem realistically. Unless, of course, you got a HUGE piercing. But I don't plan on doing that. Something small and stylish, if at all. I've got a friend who has a lip piercing, and he says it never gets in the way of anything; the hole, he says, also closes up pretty quickly once you take out the object (he swims a lot, has to remove it). As for infections, yes, that would be something to watch out for. I was told that for the first several weeks, constant care and cleaning must be applied to the lip piercing; once that period has ended, things are pretty much smooth sailing. But I'm still liking the ear-piercing idea, too. Decisions ... ^_^

Spirit ... If I got a tatt on my wrist or forearm, but it was something original and personally resonant, would I have your approval? It's important to me, you see. ;)
