Forgotten Path

The forest is filled with merry birdsong
and quiet rustles from the underbrush.
Sunlight filters through the trees all along
a forgotten trail, with grass thick and lush.

A deer walks warily upon this trail
but soon startles and vanishes from sight
though nothing had changed in the wooded vale.
And empty the trail remained, until night.

With the night the moon and stars come alight.
Down the path she runs, hidden by her cape.
The grass is untouched by her fearful flight.
For she flees from what she cannot escape.

Morning comes at last and she fades from view
Returning beneath the carved stone at road’s end.
And reading the stone reveals what is true
That this poor lost soul haunts this lonely bend.

We now know why she nightly takes this road.
She seeks escape from fate and flees the stone
that’s proof of her demise. For her time slowed
to a stop one late night when her life had flown.
