Chapter 9
“Hello,” Danny said. Laury looked up at him apparently she hadn’t noticed him walk up.
“I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.” She said.
“Oh that won’t do… I know! My name’s Danny and you are?” Danny said.
“Laury,” Laury said.
“There we’re not strangers anymore.” Danny told Laury cheerfully.
“I’m glad to see you two are getting on so swimmingly.” A familiar voice from the hall opposite Said.
“I know that voice,” they both said. Then as Danny spun around Laury sprang to her feet and they pointed said simultaneously exclaimed, “you!”
“You know her?” Danny asked.
“Well kinda,” Laury told him. “I’ve never actually talked to her, but she’s talked to me.”
“And let me guess, she shows up and things go from slightly odd to full on weird?” Danny asked.
“Yes you too huh?” Laury said. “How are you anyway?” Laury asked the woman.
“I am your messenger.” The woman said. “My name’s Dian.”
“Well Dian, if you’re a messenger lets here a message.” Danny said critically.
“All will be explained when we arrive.” Dian told them.
“Arive? Where are we going?” Laury asked.
“You will know when we get there.” Dian told them.
“Wait! If we’re going somewhere I should go return this money” Danny said.
“Don’t worry, the man and woman living upstairs will wake up tomorrow with no recollection of you, and three dollars on there bedside table.” Dian told him calmly.
“In that case,” Danny said. “Laury would you like a soda?”
“I’d like a cola.” Laury said sullenly.
Danny looked down at the girl and smiled. “Alright a cola, and what about you miss Dian?” He asked.
“I’ll take a root bear.” Dian told him.
“Okay, two colas and a root bear,” Danny said. Then there drinks in hand the trio left. Danny looked up at the sky and saw that it was almost dawn. A little later on after the sun had risen Danny glanced down at Laury and saw that she was exhausted. Her slight frame was drooping, and her head was down so that her long dirty blond hair obscured her face. “Laury,” Danny said. She looked up at him her blue-gray eyes tired.
“What,” she said her voice ragged.
“Come here,” Danny ordered bending at the knees so that he was level with Laury. “Jump on,” he told her as she reached him.
“Why?” She asked no making the connection.
“Because you’re tired,” Danny said softly. “Get on, and I’ll carry you while you sleep.
“Okay,” Laury said top tired to argue. Laury threw her arms around Danny’s neck and he grabbed her legs so that she wouldn’t fall. Then Danny broke into a trot to catch up wit Dian who was waiting at the end of the street.
“Very kind of you,” Dian told him, as they started to walk.
“Not really,” Danny corrected. “I’ve always wanted a younger sister.”
“I see,” Dian said with a smile. “Take care of her she’s all you have left.”
“What do you mean by that?” Danny asked for about the millionth time that morning, and received the expected.
“All will be reviled when we arrive,” From Dian.
Several hours later as the sun was beginning to set, Laury (who had since woken up) Looked up at Danny and smiled. She had decided that she liked Danny; he was nice and funny, plus whenever she had started feeling down, he had cheered her up!
Dian stopped abruptly and said, “This should be far enough.”
“You mean were here?” Laury asked excitedly looking around excitedly. Then she drooped a bit, “There’s nothing here.” She said.
“No Laury, There’s a large field and some woods here.” Danny corrected her then he turned to Dian. “So what’s all this stuff you were going to tell us when we ‘arrive’?” Danny asked her.
“We have not yet arrived.” Dian told him.
“Then why have we stopped?” Laury demanded.
“There is one last thing that must be done before you may enter.” Dian told them, and then she held out her hands. Resting on her palms were two stone which were almost identical to the one’s both Laury and Danny had found.
“Last time I found one of those I almost forgot how to breathe.” Danny told Dian.
“This time’s different,” she told them reassuringly. “Take it.”
“Well ladies first,” Danny said looking at Laury.
“Baby,” Laury said under her breath, and then she reached out and took one of the stones. Laury flinched expecting to be assailed by the same pain as before, but it never came. “Alright, Danny now you,” she said.
“Okay,” Danny said cheerfully.
“Oh, so now you’re fine doing it, now that you’ve had a girl test it for you!” Laury accused.
“Yup!” Danny said grinning, Laury scowled.
“You tow will do well together,” Dian said suppressing a chuckle.
“What do you mean by that?” Laury asked.
“All will be reviled-” Dian started but Laury and Danny cut her off.
“When we arrive, we know!” they said simultaneously. Then Danny took the second stone, as soon as he did a tall door appeared in front of them.
“Um, where did that door come from?” Laury asked, looking bemused.
“It has always been there,” Dian told them. “Follow if you want to learn what’s happening.” Then Dian proceeded through the door.
