What does everyone think is the most famous video game(s). Make sure when u decide, you consider what the games did to change the gaming world.

For me its Super Mario Brothers 2&3 two of the earliest and best side scroll games and Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers best rpg of its time and Starfox for N64, Final Fantasy 7 which is the most pivotal game ever, Diablo Warcraft CS, and finally Halo.
On a sidenote i might add pokemon for gameboy only cause so many people played it me included.

well i love mario and zelda to pieces and warcraft is great to. im not into the whole Halo thing i mean 1 and 2 were great but 3 seemed like a major copy of 2 with little improvements other than a slight boost in graphics... i love the Call of duty series :)

I'm going to have to go w/ Final Fantasy, I know some ppl aren't a big fan of the series but the first one not only changed things in a big way for the company that produced it, but it also changed the way we game in a huge way, before that RPG style games didn't have much influence w/ gamers and now almost everyone has played at least one, they've grown in scope and complexity, and they are one of the driving forces behind console purchases

I would have to say that Everquest was huge for the video game industary. it was one first really big MMOs which really got people into that type of game.

Here's a blast from the past: X-com (UFO Defense for some of you). It was very popular when it came out, and defined an entire genre.

ya know Nejih, if I had to pick one w/ the most sequels I think it would more likely be considered something like Breakout or Tetris, so many clones/sequels of those too, but yeah pong rocked, I remember playing that on my Atari system, that and the old Indiana Jones game, and Snoopy and the Red Baron, that rocked

I'll agree that pong, tetris, and mario had a lot to do with the start of the gaming industry and are still very well known. I also think that Final Fantasy VII played a big part with the transition from 2D graphics to 3D.

Clearly the most famous computergame ever, is either Pacman og ping pong. Pacman even had his own tv-show (and cereals)...
How do you make a tv-show with a cheesewheel as the main character i have no idea. I have never actually seen it.

I personally wouldn't vote it, cuz I didn't play it, but I can always remember how many people I knew went nuts for grand turismo. I guess it was a turning point racing game. though personally mario kart 64 was my turning point racing game. and on the 64 note, golden eye.
aside from that, gotta give pivotal props to pong, space invaders, pac man, tetris, mario bros 3, zelda, doom, nba jam, street fighter, mortal kombat, star fox, ff vii (if I had to pick one), resident evil, tony hawk proskater (sorry, I skateboard, and it was nuts when me and my friends got to play it for the first time on the demo disc), GTA III, halo, and probably some others.
did anybody ever see that movie with fred savage they used to hype mario bros. 3? I remember seeing it and being totally stoked on that game and waiting to get my hands on a copy of it. don't remember what it's called. had some mute kid in it that was super good at video games. bah.

hmm...most interesting...
i'll agree that most of the games mentioned are really good and classic...(not a console gamer myself, so i can't vouch for any of the console ones)
has anyone mentioned StarCraft yet? i personally think that it's perhaps one of THE most popular games of all times....was, anyway LOL. i'll always remember it as the game that launched an entire generation into LAN gaming....

I think that the ultimate strategy game for PC was Civilization. It has been followed by Three excellent sequels and the Civilization 2 remains very much a playable version.
I would put Heroes of Might and Magic 3 quite close. I'm not sure that the 4th version lived up to the hype, but some gamers I've talked to say that Heroes 5 has returned to the excellence of Heroes 3.
for action/role playing games I would go for another oldie: Diablo II Lord of Destruction. That's one of the few games upgraded by Apple to work on OS X. That alone implies a real longevity factor.
Would Sims count as a game? It is after all a simulation! If one counts it it is surely as famous as any of those mentioned above!
When it comes to handhelds, i think that Nintendo Gameboy and DS titles are the ones which dominate. I suppose Mario or Zelda have to be the most famous. It's hard to know which though. My own favourite--but probably not in the league of those two would be the Advance Wars series.

I would have to say Chrono Cross. I never really played it but I've seen my cousin play it and well he let me play but it was busted and could only play the first dungen and then it would freeze. It was also one of very few games that got a perfect 10/10 rating. That means everyone that ever rated it gave a 10/10.

The Castlevania series. That series is just pure magic and putting aside the terrible graphics the gameplay systems were unlike anything seen before or will ever be seen again, they actually give you a reason to kill hordes of enemy monsters and the real thing that I like about it the most is that the gameplay systems change dramatically for the next game title.

But I think you can't beat the classics like Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong... they've been around for years so would be up there in term of being the most famous.

InFaMY
11-21-2008, 06:45 PM
I Agree cant beat the classics Pac Man Pong Super Mario Bros Donkey Kong Dig Dug Galaga all those sweet Atari and Coin-Op games but with the new gen as much as i hate to say it the new icon that every one can look at and know exaccly who it is now adays is Master Cheif so Halo is winning the New wave now adays When halo came out for Orginal X-Box it took the gameing industruy by storm no one ever seen a game like that before it was very innovative and its become a juggernuat series now Final Fantasy is a good one but thats been around for awhile and personally i think its lost abit of its flavor but then again i never really was big into FF the only one i really love in FF8 and most people hate that one Kingdom Hearts was a Huge score for Square and Disney becuase Disney never really had a profitable game nor did they have a appeal to a 14 to 19 audiance when your that age you have no intrest in disney thats why disneys smartest move was for the rights of their chars to be made for kingdom hearts and that is one of Squares Best selling Franchises and highly anticapted how many people cant wait for KH3 (witch screen shots are out there people its being made for Ps3 sadly) This brings me up to Talking about corpoations doing good movies Square Micorsoft picking up the halo rights to talking about Bad choices Nintendo used to be the most dominating company in the gameing industry now they are struggleing my opinion game cube witch failed and the wii i personally hate the wii and i know alot of people who dont care for the wii as well i know several people who bought a wii and traded it in the wii was a great system idea in paper but the reality is its a terriable idea nobody wants to play FPS games moveing around and everything and that one game they came out with a banjo kazoie game maybe they advertised it that it was the first game you could play with your but cuase they head this slead like thing nobody wants that i know i wouldnt want to use my controler again if i had to use my arse to play it i much rather sit on my comppy chair and shoot locust or chainsaw them in a nice friendly game of horde So i know i just went on a little spree of rant there sorry but my point is games comes with fame in every genre and every time a new system or a new game engine comes out your gonna get a juggernuat game that will inspire a unfrogetable character so you cant put fame on games to many people know to many characters its in the eye of the beholder persay

Final Fantasy was one of the first games I ever played. It got me wanting to play RPGs more.

On a bad note, I'd say E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600. It was subsequently the downfall of all video games. And honestly, I don't know of anyone who even played later E.T. games.

Maybe there isn't a most popular ONE, but there are the most popular ONES, which i believe would be Mario games, GTA games. MGS games, and as from recently, LBP!

When it comes to fame, are we just talking about in the gaming world? Because I'm kind of assuming that it's just all around, and if so, Mario series by a very long shot.

Keep in mind that there's a difference in most popular and known by most, sure everyone knows Mario, but since Nintendo decided to Over use him 'till they can't get any more money from it, its been losing a lot of fans, and its popularty's been dropping a lot.

I certainly haven't seen that. Especially not with the core games. And it's stil the most famous.

Let me put it to you this way so you understand my point.
What happened on the latest Mario game? everyone was like oh, an other Mario game, some might be like "Oh cool, this is probably good" others "bleh, yet ANOTHE Mario game", And as you can see, Mario games don't make any fuss anymore because people don't care about them as much anymore.
In the other hand, look at how much attention LBP is getting world wide, all the fuss and racketing, even a parade (i think), everyone making fan madde products, and all the stuff happening realted to it. Bet you won't see any upcoming Mario games get that much attention anymore, yes, he's known world wide, but he's also been over-used.
Do you get my point?

Oddly enough im taken a class on Game Design and we are talking about all these games. I was browsing and I happen to notice, sorry if i did not see you, that Metal Gear Solid was not on here. Personally while not really well known amoungst all people but definetly amoungst gamers would have to be Tekken and Street Fighter. Halo while very popular I found Call Duty more fun only because i could get into the story and not feel like this could never happen. Well i'll stop now soi don't bore i could go on and on and...

Those two games initiated series of 3D video games.

I would have to say Miyamoto was more crucial, pretty much every game has something from Miyamoto.

Pac Man Series (Pac-Man MS. Pac-Man, JR Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Pac-Attack, Pac-Man World), hell it's been on every computer platform, counsole, handheld, cell phone in one form or another from the atari 2600 to the XBox 360, probably has taken more ppl's quarters than any other arcade and has it's own cartoon series. If that's not fame than I don't know what is...

Multiplayer right...? I think an incredibly distinguishable difference between PC games and consoles games is that console games are played on consoles, and PC games are played on PCs. Arcades in the late 70s, games like Pong had multiplayer capabilities years before Steve and Steve tinkered out their Apples which were among the first PCs to even be able to have an easily understandable interface, and limited games.

The first 3d game was a game called Maze-Wars, and the first multi-player game was also a 3d FPS that came out in 1974 or 1975 and was called Spasim. [Maze War was also Multi-player]

Well known and famous... Not Street Fighter, not compared to Mario.

Also Space Invaders and Pong. If you're talking about fame in video games, it will often be what has been spoofed the most, and they're pretty high up there.

I think that I've said this before but I think that the best game is OoT.

Miyamoto set the bar for all modern games. There isn't anything that doesn't use his principles (outside of games that use Tetris' principles). He was the first guy to make it so that you had to find out yourself what you were supposed to do, and was largely criticised for it at the time.

And Ocarina set quite a huge bar that no games really ever met (I don't think that Twilight Princess made it).

I will certainly admit that I overly argue everything. But I am in now way in denial, it is clear that you don't understand what I say.

I let people have their opinions, and it seems that you are being a little hypocritical, you are claiming that I am wrong, and saying that I am one-sided, when you are showing those exact same characteristics.

Now, if you want to argue my opinions, rather than simply saying that I am wrong, maybe show some points. Which post-Mario/Zelda (original) games that aren't puzzle games don't use Miyamoto's concepts?

Well we are actually talking about fame, so I went off topic when I talked about what game I thought was best, although I did that replying to someone else. I have said that my opinion is that OoT is still the best game ever, because I have gotten the most enjoyment out of it. That is my opinion, and it is largely based around the way that time was done. I do not believe that any recent games have matched OoT.

And i am not hypocritical at all, as i have not taken any sides. I never said you were wrong, just saying its not for sure you're right, yet you insist that you are. If you can't see the difference between thos two things then its no use speaking to you on this.

Hmm... Really.

Jeez, i know you're in denial for the fact that Nintendo and most of their games have fallen behind

That looks like an opinion. It seems that that is the opposite of my opinion, insisting that I am wrong, with no evidence, hence the hypocritical aspect.

It seems that you do not understand my original points:

- The conversation went off topic and talked about favourite video games.
- I mentioned that my favourite was OoT.
- When Dark Thorn said mentioned his favourite game set the bar for FF, I mentioned that Miyamoto set the bar for all games that were made after them.

It truly isn't. Something so subjective can't be a fact. I think that modern video games from other companies are just getting worse as they try to use violence and realistic graphics to make up for gameplay. And I believe that Nintendo is holding it's good standard, although they aren't showing as many amazingly new things because they have exhausted many of them. No one is coming up with really original ideas any more.

But I think that Nintendo's success can be shown by it's three most famous games:

Mario: Galaxy was awesome, New Super Mario Bros. was a much needed blast from the past.
Zelda: TP was very good, and was the game that the fans wanted as it was the most like OoT (I am certainly not alone in saying that it is the best game). Phantom Hourglass was very fun I will admit that it could have been harder, which brings me to Spirit Tracks, which I am sure will be harder. Spirit Tracks looks like the direct sequel to PH, the add was released recently.
Pokemon: It's great, you can't really have an opinion about the incredibly complex world of Pokemon competitive battle without knowing something about it. I'd suggest smogon.com .

EDIT: Yay! Post 100.

OK, see it from my point of view. It looked as though you were making a completely serious statement, saying a fact about something completely subjective.

And if you've seen me around the forum, you may notice that I like arguing in general, this is no different. You should see me on topics that matter.

And I don't need to convince myself, the Wii is the best console that I have ever gotten, I'm not saying this objectively, I am saying this because I have gotten the most enjoyment out of it. This can come from backwards compatability alone.

And don't think that I am only seeing this from one side, I have many friends with other consoles and I have played them both. I don't have as much fun playing other consoles.

You're always going to get an amusing response out of me, I went ballistic on Pokemon vs. Digimon because everyone kept refering to the Pokemon show as though it was the real Pokemon.

And I am good with my console also (and as a spiteful comment, the Wii is actually a large number of consoles), we agree on something.
