Is valentines day a holiday created by the card companys

Card Companies make alot of revenue by Valentines Day, but I doubt they created the holiday. It would be difficult for an industry to make a special day of the year just to make money. Every holiday we have is at least based on some ritual from the past or some idea that came from another nation.

Valentine's Day really IS a holiday created by commercialization. If you think about it, there really is hardly any meaning behind it whatsoever, barely any historical connotation or tradition. It started out as a holiday created by Hallmark and it's always been that way... Sure places and societies have had holidays celebrating love, but it was the money people that sat down and decided we would make it in February, and there will be chocolates and cards.

Valentine's Day is a holiday and it's not exist because of postcard companies. Honestly who sends post cards? Maybe it's the florists day :P +chocolate company's.

Saint Valentine's day is in the calendars since 496. , it was celebrated by christians.
Valentine was a christian who was in prison ( II. Claudius was the emperor that time) because of his relegion. He gave back the vision of the prisonguard's daughter.
Before he was executed on 270. februar 14. he sent a card to the girl : "Yours Valentine". That's how it became famous. The modern celebration came from England during the XV. century.

well basicaly it was a holiday in celebration of roman gods

first they slaughtered an animal
then used the animals hide to whip young women for fertility(yeh...wow)
but then in the 5th century a pope declared that on the 14th of febuary it would be st valentines day to christianize it
they think it was named after the valentine who was secretely marrying couples after it was banned by an emperor who didnt want love getting in the way of his soldiers performance
when valentine was captured they put him in a cell before he was executed and it was said that he fell in love with his jailers daughter and on febuary 14th when he was supposed to be executed he passed a note to her that said "to my valentine" thats where the tradition starts
and im pretty sure halmark wasnt around back then xD
but im sure they use it to make money just like any huge organation does with holidays
its one of the most celebrated holidays though
and americans on average send out 180 million roses
so i spose flower shops make big bucks too lol

The fun thing about st. valentine is that there's hardly any facts on him, other than he was a priest or bishop, and that he was killed by the aforementioned emperor and laid to rest on feb. 14th. They don't even know for sure if it was just one man. valentines day was started as many others as a day of feasting. A big supper like you'd get at easter, or christmas, or whatever. Then you cue in capitalism and suddenly they've all got price tags attached to them.
Do yourself a favour and don't reserve your love and affections for one day of the year.

just coz ppl make a bunch of money off of it doesnt make it a fake holiday
and capitalism has nothing to do with it people need to make money one way or another and in the sales business that is how you do it
people have to eat and support their families
and its not like theyre selling drugs or illegal weapons to people
most people enjoy the things sold on valentines day
or even if you make them yourself its still just fun
its kinda dumb to say its fake just because its a good money maker
so is christmas
that doesnt make it any less of a holiday
hallmark isnt the only place that makes a ton of money off of valentines sales anyways
