As a slave, she could not do anything about wanting to be free. Men thought that she was good for nothing except for a push -over, a whore, who liked to fool around. That is not true, for more than anything; she did not have a choice. The only way that she could be free is when her master takes off the irons on her wrists and ankles, and then says, “You are free.”

Nakia is envisioned as a young lady at the age of thirteen, who knew very little about the world and its cruelties. After her parents death, she was taken in by her aunt, who later died of a leopard attack. Nakia had no one else to go live with, and at the age thirteen, it is hard to make ends meet. Unless if you think that being a prostitute is considered to be a profession, then go for it. Her aunt’s possessions were taken away so that everything could pay off what she did not owe to the government. Which back then, the government was changing everyday, demanding more of people and their monthly pay. This was in the 1860s, where it was outside of the state boundaries of Washington. This place was called Snoqualmie Pass.
The forests are beautiful and were surrounded with birds and the creatures that inhabited it. The most deadly of all the animals in the forest was the leopard. It can take down a human without so much as a bush moving against the wind. That is how quiet they can be. But even the luckiest of people can get away from an attack like that. If they did, then that person would be considered ˝ demon and immortal.

Chapter I
It was not six months later after she moved in with her aunt that something had happened. While gathering water at the falls just next to the village, Leda, who is her aunt, was attacked by a leopard. At first, the leopard was drinking at the sandbar, minding its own business. Something triggered its attention and jumped on Leda, breaking her neck. Almost immediately, she died. It was not half an hour later that Nakia was wondering where her aunt was, because Leda had not returned from the falls. When she went to go check on Leda, Nakia saw her aunt laying on her side, not moving. The water jug was no where in sight. Calling for help was out of the question because what if the thing that had killed her aunt was still around? Nakia got up and started walking towards the village when the leopard saw her.

Refraining from letting her go, the leopard thought to itself, “If only she was a leopard, she has the graceful walk, the body, the beautiful hair, and the eyes.” Nakia is 5' 6" and is possibly 110 pounds, at most. No fat, skinny, and muscled. Her skin, the color of a Goddess. Her hair is like an iris in the spring, when they bloom into different colors. Nakia’s hair color is between a yellow, an orange, and pink mixed together, to create an ash blonde. All the men stop to watch to her as she passses day by day. It is as if she has a curse that can even make a mere boy look at her as if she ruled the world. No hesitation was needed, for the leopard acted in its own defense to knock her down in Nakia’s tracks.

She tried getting away from the leopard the moment it pushed her to the ground. But Nakia only got 50 yards away ,it just took a second, and the leopard landed right on top of her. A mere cry came out of her mouth, and it hesitated, wondering if it had severely hurt her. That did not matter at that crucial moment, when the leopard took its sharp nails and dug into her skin. Nakia screamed and yelled for help, but it was no use, for she was getting weak, and nothing had came out of her mouth. The loss of blood from her body, made a circle directly around her. Sticky patches of blood began to sink into her clothing and Nakia knew she was going to pass out. The thing that once was on top of Nakia laid at her side. It looked at her with amazement, wonder, and something else. She awoke in a bed, and sitting next to her was her neighbor, Leigha, from where her aunt had lived. “Are you feeling okay Nakia,” said Leigha in a hushed tone. Before Nakia could say anything, her head was throbbing with pain and it was as if there was no sound in the world. Everything fell silent and it seemed like Leigha was just mouthing words of complete and utter nonsense.
