Tennessee was as beautiful as ever with the trees changing into the autumn colors which consisted of orange, red, brown, and yellow. The sky was painted with a light purple, and a light orange dimmed into the distant woods. No sun appeared, and it seemed as if it had already diminished for another day. It has taken us a day and a half to get to Cleveland, Tennessee, where Uncle Jared lives. He lives on fifteen acres, and most of it is woods, and then at the end of the woods, there is an opening, where you can see the Tennessee River. Uncle Jared’s wife, Nicola, loves to go down there in her spare time to write in her stories. The river inspires her writing, and I find that amazing. A road comes up to our right and Aunt Kay turns on it, which is the driveway to their house. It is long, for it goes back into the woods a ways, and before you know it, you see a two level brick and Victorian style house. To me, it is the most beautiful house in America, with all the beauty in the world surrounding it.
James and Jeremy run out of the house, as if something was wrong and the boogeyman of the underworld was chasing them. Of course, they were just excited to see me, since they have a huge crush on me. “Rose, Rose,” they scream on the top of their voice. A smile appeared on my face, and my eyes gleamed with beauty, as they hugged me around the legs. James and Jeremy were only seven years old; however, their love for me has not changed. “Wow, you have grown since I last saw you,” I commented to the twins. “I am the tallest,” said Jeremy with a big smirk on his face. “Yes you are,” I replied as I held back a giggle. James crawled on my back, and said, “piggy-back ride.” I took him to the front step of the house and put him down as Aunt Kay took our bags to the front door. Just then, Nicola opened the door to the house and gave me a big hug, as if she has never seen me before. “You are getting more beautiful every time I see you,” she told me as she gave me another hug.
“Kay,” she said, questionably. As they talked, I went and got the remaining bags out of the car and locked up. Just then, out from no where, Uncle Jared puts an arm around my shoulder and asks me, “How’s my little girl doing?” A big smile shows on my face, and I replied, “I am doing quite well, Uncle Jared, as you know; I have a job now and trying to save money for an apartment.” “That is my girl, always looking out for her own well being,” he added, grabbing some of the bags in my hands. “Thanks Uncle Jared, the bags were getting a bit heavy,” I said. He replied, “No problem, kid.” We went inside and they showed us where we were going to be staying in the house. I was bunking with Kay in the guest room, where a king size bed was placed. A closet was on the right side of the room as we walked in, a bed side table with a phone was next to the bed on the left, and a small dresser was all that was in the room.
That evening, we went outside for a barbeque where there was an overlook of the river. It was a wonderful evening, and the food was just as good as I remembered. My cousin’s faces had barbeque sauce all over their faces, and all I did was laugh the entire time. However, they did not like it when Nicola took them inside for a bath. They just complained over and over like whining kittens. Aunt Kay and I talked to Uncle Jared for quite a while on the family issue, which was the division of the land my parents owned. “So Rose, you thinking about moving in the house,” asked Uncle Jared. “I am not sure yet, Uncle Jared, because I am still trying to get some money saved up. I think I have two thousand dollars or something,” I commented. “They left the house to you, I hope you know,” said Aunt Kay. We continued talking about if I was going to be moving in this coming year or so, and if not, they were going to put it on the market. The chiggers came out within several minutes, so we retired for the night.
I went into the kitchen and made some nice hot chi tea, which my mother showed me how before she died. Everyone says that she made the best chi tea within the family, and it is not ironic that I inherited it from her. “Excellent tea as always Rose,” commented Nicola. “Thank you,” I replied happily. We drank the tea in silence until the boys started crying for daddy to scare away the boogeyman. That ended the evening to a close as I washed the cups and Nicola dried them. As I crawled into bed, I said to Aunt Kay, “Aunt Kay, I am glad that we came to Tennessee, so thank you for bringing me. I needed to get away for a while.” She smiled and said with her closed, “Well I am glad you came too, hun.” She gave me a big hug and crawled under the sheets.
Lying under the sheets, I begin to worry that the dream would come to haunt me again, and I would awake yet to another nightmare. Apparently Kay could sense what was wrong and asked what was bothering me. “It is just, I have been having a nightmare for quite a while and it seems what ever I do, it will not go away,” I say shyly. Aunt Kay pulls me to her and holds me under her arms, and says over my head, “if those dreams want to come back, let them, however,” she paused looking at me, “they can just diminish for all I care.” Then she fell asleep, holding me. I feel comforted and safe from the world that I thought was going to hurt me and those that I loved. I love my aunt Kay, Uncle Jared and his family; those are the people I love.
The dream awoke me from my slumber. At first, I dreamt about nothing, and I was relieved. Like a tidal wave, he came in, and disturbed the long silence I was practically enjoying. “Come to me,” he kept repeating. Startled, I awoke. I could not sleep anymore, and this dream was making me go insane. Why was I thinking about him in the first place? This man, this thing that was stalking me in my dreams I could not handle. “Go away,” I scream in the empty room. Thank god that Aunt Kay was a heavy sleeper, for I did not want to trouble her anymore than was necessary. I walked downstairs on the spiral staircase and went to the kitchen for some nice chi tea to make me feel better. After my first sip of tea, Nicola came from the spiral staircase. I started making more when she saw me in the kitchen. “What are you doing up Rose,” she asked.
“Couldn’t sleep,” I replied. I handed her a cup of chi tea and sat down beside Nicola. We talked about the news and how I have been for the last year. After a nice conversation, Nicola and I washed and dried the dishes and went back to bed. “Hope you do not have any more nightmares,” she said as she descended down the hallway.
It seemed like morning came rather quickly after going back to bed and waking up to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Regardless, the sunrise was very beautiful with sparrows singing one of the hymns of Mary Poppins. That takes me back to memory lane when mom could not get me to stop watching that movie over and over. “Good morning Rose,” said Nicola and Kay in the kitchen. I said good morning back, however, in Japanese. I guess three years of Japanese in High School stays with you. “Sorry, guess I still speak Japanese. What I said was good morning,” I commented. Everyone seemed to be up and very cheerful. However, I did not see Uncle Jared anywhere. “Where is Jared,” I asked. “He will be right back, he just went to the river to check the lines for fish,” said Nicola. We were having fried fish, scrambled eggs, and toast for breakfast. It seems like the good old days when I used to come here in the kitchen and help my aunt with the cooking. Every summer until two years ago, I used to come and spend the summers with them and help with the boys since they were always busy with work. So I just did it for fun and told Nicola and Jared not to not pay me, but they insisted.
